The 1970s was the decade that saw the arrival of Alice Cooper as a major force in the rock firmament. Published annually since 2008 "The Complete & Independent Guide to the Eurovision Song Contest" contains every statistic imaginable. This new edition for 2024 has over 330 pages of historical records and analysis of voting, divided into four parts: Section 1: Qualification for Eurovision for the current year. We look at each country's qualification process, whether by internal selection or by nation competition. Where a national broadcaster has held a competition to select their artist and song, we give details of how the competition was organised, the points or voting percentages given to the top 3 and a brief profile of the winning performer. We also give QR code links to the official videos. Section 2: In this section we focus on this year's Contest in Malmo. We full details of the writers and composers of each song, followed by full voting tables for each semi-final and the final, split into public and jury voting. Then there is a round-by-round record of the scoreboard to show how each country moved up and down the leaderboard as the points are announced both for the jury points and the always exciting public televote points. Section 3: Here's where the data really gets crunched. Starting with a full year by year record of each country's entries, the section moves on to records such as most successful & least successful countries, whether internally selected artists do better than those who qualify through national competitions, winning margins, how well (and more commonly, how badly) the Big 5 perform, languages songs have been performed in and which type of act generally does best, we do a deep dive into complex statistical analysis & include data on average points received for each position in the running order since 1975, the closest & most one-sided voting relationships, how points awarded by juries differ from those given by the public, geographical and bloc voting and finally every country's voting record in every Contest - If you're curious about whether some countries always favour others, this is the section for you! Down River
In 1972, David Ackles's third album, American Gothic, was released to a flurry of press plaudits declaring it to be 'the Sgt Pepper of folk' and one of the greatest records ever made. Yet the album, like its two predecessors, failed to sell, and after one more record, its creator simply vanished. He found work, raised a family, and died a couple of decades later, having never made another record.Today, Ackles's music is largely consigned to the streaming netherworld. It is yet to be properly repackaged and reappraised, and he remains largely unknown. But there is no middle ground. You either love him or you've never heard of him. 1973 was a landmark year for The Beatles. It was 10 years since they scored their first UK gold disc ('She Loves You') - ten years since the birth of Beatlemainia. A decade is a long time in pop music. Fashions come and go in the blink of an eye. Most pop stars are lucky to last eighteen months at the top. Yet in 1973 The Beatles collected 13 gold discs between them (seven gold albums and six gold singles). Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr released milestone albums in the form of Band On The Run and Ringo. George Harrison released the follow-up album to All Things Must Pass and John Lennon his follow-up to Imagine. Their contract with Alien Klein ended in litigation from both parties. Lennon and McCartney were being sued by ATV/Northern Songs. A publishing company they once thought they owned. Lennon was fighting deportation from the USA and a failing marriage. Despite the endless court cases, relationship breakdowns, financial and political pressures, and management problems, Lennon, McCartney, Harrison, and Starr managed to write and record some of the best solo albums of their careers and continued to rack up gold discs. The European music world at the turn of the 19th to the 20th century was characterised by national ideas and nationalistic ideologies. But the reality of the music itself seems quite different: inspiration did not stop at national borders, and composers sought out poetic material and artistic goals outside the traditions of their homeland. It was often music critics and later music historians who put the works and their creators in a strict national context. In Eastern Europe, traditions of national music writing have been particularly well preserved, with effects that continue to this day. The texts in this volume attempt to suggest alternative readings, to reveal nationalistic stereotypes, and to place the music back in the transnational complexity and richness of its origins.

In 1963, a rock group named the Kingsmen recorded the song "Louie, Louie." The popularity of the song and difficulty in discerning the lyrics led some people to suspect the song was obscene. The FBI was asked to investigate whether or not those involved with the song violated laws against the interstate transportation of obscene material. The limited investigation lasted from February to May 1964 and discovered no evidence of obscenity.
