Rediscovered Classics of Japanese Animation
Rediscovered Classics of Japanese Animationis the first academic work to examine World Masterpiece Theater(Sekai Meisaku Gekij繫, 1969-2009), which popularized the practice of adapting foreign children's books into long-running animated series and laid the groundwork for powerhouses like Studio Ghibli.World Masterpiece Theater (Sekai Meisaku Gekij繫, 1969-2009) is a TV staple created by the Japanese studio Nippon Animation, which popularized the practice of adapting foreign children's books into long-running animated series. Once generally dismissed by critics, the series is now frequently investigated as a key early work of legendary animators Isao Takahata and Hayao Miyazaki. In the first book-length examination of the series, Maria Chiara Oltolini analyzes cultural significance of World Masterpiece Theater, and the ways in which the series pioneered the importance of children's fiction for Japanese animation studios and laid the groundwork for powerhouses like Studio Ghibli.Adapting a novel for animation also means decoding (and re-coding) socio-cultural patterns embedded in a narrative. World Masterpiece Theater stands as a unique example of this linguistic, medial, and cultural hybridisation. Popular children's classics such as Little Women, Peter Pan, and Anne of Green Gables became the starting point of a full-fledged negotiation process in which Japanese animators retold a whole range of narratives that have one basic formula in common: archetypal stories with an educational purpose. In particular, the series played a role in shaping the pop culture image of a young girl (sh繫jo).Examining the series through the lens of animation studies as well as adaptation studies, Oltolini sheds new light on this long-neglected staple of Japanese animation history.
Supply Chain Cinema
Why are big budget films typically made across an array of seemingly dissociated sites? Supply Chain Cinema shows how the production journeys of such films exemplify the principles of the supply chain, whose core imperative is to nimbly and opportunistically manufacturing wherever is most amenable and efficient. Through extensive on-site investigations and in-depth interviews with film professionals, Kay Dickinson delivers nuanced insight into working practices in the UK and the UAE. Among the sites she examines is Warner Bros' permanent base at Leavesden Studios near London. From tax breaks designed to attract foreign projects to infrastructures, logistical support and expertise offered, she considers why Hollywood giants elect to make more of their films in Britain than in the USA. Dickinson goes on to show how the UK's ambitions to enlarge its creative economies has opened up a host of competitive advantages with British higher education increasingly fashioned to conform to the needs of border-hopping enterprise, thus generating a workforce keenly adapted to the demands of blockbuster moviemaking.

Microbiology and Horror Cinema
This book redefines the landscape of horror cinema by exploring the intersection of microbiology and film. Microbiology and Horror Cinema delves into the chilling world of pathogens--funguses, bacteria, parasites, and viruses--and their influence on the narrative and visual conventions of both classic and contemporary horror films. By examining movies like The Exorcist, Annabelle, The Wicker Man, The Skeleton Key, and Crawl, this monograph offers a fresh perspective on how these microscopic threats shape our understanding of fear and embodiment. The chapters investigate such critical themes as the representation of disease, the impact of infection on human and non-human bodies, and the cultural significance of these narratives in the context of global health crises. Readers will encounter thought-provoking analyses that challenge traditional interpretations of horror, inviting them to consider the invisible yet pervasive anxieties that these films evoke. This book is a must-read for anyone interested in the evolving discourse on horror cinema and infectious disease, as it provides a unique epidemiological lens through which to view these unsettling stories. Scholars, students, and enthusiasts of film studies, cultural studies, medical humanities, and microbiology will find Microbiology and Horror Cinema an invaluable resource. It offers a compelling exploration of how horror films reflect and amplify our deepest fears about disease and contagion.

Two-Wheeled Cinema
From the thundering escape of Steve McQueen to the neon-lit streets of Neo-Tokyo, motorcycles have played an outsized role in the magic and mythology of cinema. Two-Wheeled Cinema is a sweeping, fact-based journey through the screen history of motorcycles-charting their evolution from silent film curiosities to global icons of freedom, rebellion, and adventure. This richly detailed narrative explores not only legendary stunts and beloved movie bikes, but also the cultural dialogue between real riders and cinematic fantasy, the artistry of builders and stunt performers, and the enduring impact of motorcycles on audiences and popular culture around the world.Tracing unforgettable moments from The Wild One and Easy Rider through science fiction spectacle and modern digital effects, the book examines how motorcycles became more than props: they are characters, catalysts, and emblems of individuality. Through meticulous research and engaging storytelling, Two-Wheeled Cinema celebrates the people, machines, and creative visionaries who have shaped a century of two-wheeled stories-on screen and beyond.
Cinecepts, Deleuze, and Godard-Mi矇ville
As the spread of knowledge and even theory becomes an increasingly audiovisual affair, how can philosophy adapt in ways that develop - rather than dilute - philosophical rigor and specificity? How can philosophy harness the potential of audiovisual media - being more formally multidimensional than text-only - to conceptualize with greater precision and depth? This book presents a theory of formal development of philosophy in this regard: a theory of cinecepts. While spanning film, media, art, and critical theories as well as philosophy, this study proceeds mainly through a close reimagination of the work of Gilles Deleuze, which allows for a merging of what he kept separated: filmic thinking and philosophical conceptualization. Jean-Luc Godard & Anne-Marie Mi矇ville's underexplored 1970s Sonimage works are also the subject of extensive examination, along with critical considerations of a contemporary era of academic video essays and phenomena like philosophy channels on YouTube.
The Intensive-Image in Deleuze's Film-Philosophy
This book argues that the intensive-image constitutes an important cinematic category that prompts a rethinking of Deleuze's taxonomy of images in his Cinema 1: The Movement-Image and Cinema 2: The Time-Image. Escobar explores the proposition that the notion of intensity has the potential to change the way in which we think about Deleuze's classification of films as signifying two separate periods, the classical period of the movement-image and the modern period of the time-image, thereby bringing them together and overcoming the separation that the philosopher creates. This book also explores the ways in which the intensive-image varies and differentiates itself from other images and the role it plays in contemporary cinema.
Refocus: The Films of Yim Soon-Rye
Korean cinema, though currently established as one of the most successful international film industries, has never been a fair ground for women filmmakers. Amidst the heavily male dominated Korean cinema and the film industry, Yim has consistently produced critically and commercially influential films and has been recognized at numerous film festivals/awards both in and outside of Korea. Yim has produced/directed over a dozen films including shorts - the highest number that any female director has ever achieved in Korea. Also, Yim is the only female director with a blockbuster (Gyoseop, 2023) under her belt, which was always considered to be the arena for male directors.ReFocus: The Films of Yim Soon-rye will be the very first English-language book that showcases critical readings of Yim's work and simultaneously, this volume will address and position Yim in the larger historical context of Korean cinema and women filmmakers in the world.

From Victimhood to Empowerment
From Victimhood to Empowerment: Representing Women in 1920s Soviet Georgian Cinemabrings the cinematographic works of Georgia's State Film Industry from the margins of the Soviet film studies to the centre. The book focuses on women's representations and explores how the gender roles were modified throughout the decade according to the new social and political ideals employing the discourse analysis, postcolonial perspectives and psychoanalytical feminist film theories.Bringing together Soviet Georgia's most important films of the period, the book inspects the female body's symbolic function in the aspects of class dichotomy and ethnic hierarchies. It analyzes the construction of the 'Oriental other' by the Russian colonial imagination and its subsequent dismantling in the context of the Caucasus's de-Orientalization. It also examines the characteristics embodied by the 'heroine' and 'villain' of the new social order-the New Soviet Woman and the NEPwoman-and explores women's transformation within the revolutionary setting during the decade. In the light of Bolsheviks' preoccupation and endeavour to improve 'woman question', the book surveys to what extent women's screen images were emancipated and whatthe functional meaning of this emancipation was in the given context; how the new ideals of the New Soviet woman were inscribed in the period's films and how these ideals were combined with Georgian nationality.
War Film
This thesis studies the depiction of military life and actions in war movies. The public's perception of the military is shaped through a variety of means, one of which is the feature film showing at the local theater. The increase in population and the decrease in the size of the military have greatly enlarged the percent of the population that are not associated with a serviceperson or a veteran of one of the services. Their only means of obtaining information on the status and professionalism of the military is through what they are fed via the media. The movies produced by filmmakers within the United States affect the recruiting and public perception of the military through their portrayal of events, missions, and personnel. It is important for the Department of Defense and those serving to understand the significance that these films can have on the audience. Films are studied for historical accuracy, the making of the film to include Department of Defense assistance and input, and the portrayal of the soldiers, both officers and enlisted. This thesis concludes that war movies follow historical accuracy as closely as possible within resource constraints as long as the historical content is a good story. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it. Cinema, Culture, Scotland
This book anthologises selected key works from the oeuvre of Colin McArthur, a pioneering figure within Anglophone Film and Scottish cultural studies since the 1960s.Collecting together thirty-seven essays written between 1966 and 2022, twenty-one of which were hitherto out-of-print, the book identifies and illustrates the central strands of scholarly interest that have defined one of British Film Studies and Scottish Cultural Studies' most influential careers: critical investigation and legitimisation of mid-twentieth-century Hollywood cinema and popular American film genres; the cinematic representation of Scotland and the gradual development of a Scottish film production sector; and Scotland's status as a distinctive visual and material cultural signifier within a diverse range of international popular cultures from the eighteenth century to the present.
Filming Modernity and Islam in Colonial Egypt
This book studies the rise of cinema in colonial Egypt as a supplemental secular public sphere that is not anti-religion. To this end, it investigates the reception of film by three centres of power: the colonial authorities, the Muslim clergy, and the Cairene bourgeoisie. It inquires about the representations of modernity in films produced during the time and the place filmmakers assigned to Islam in these representations. The result is a story of survival and coexistence told through the lens of cinema as modern art and popular culture negotiating its overt and covert censorship in the public sphere, despite colonization and war.
Holocaust Representations in Animated Documentaries
Animated documentaries dealing with the Holocaust, Holocaust survivors, and their descendants constitute a new phenomenon and inaugurate a new field of Holocaust commemoration. This book is the first comprehensive analysis of animated Holocaust documentaries. It explores movies produced in the USA, Canada, Australia, Europe, and Israel. Based on theories developed in the fields of animated documentary, Holocaust studies, cinema studies, trauma studies, and memory studies, this volume discusses the ways in which animated Holocaust documentaries create a new layer of Holocaust microhistory, their advantages, and their disadvantages. It shows how these movies visualize subject matter that previously eluded live-action documentaries such as the unfilmed past and people's inner worlds. The book shows that Holocaust animated documentaries also have specific shortcomings and have generated a new set of problems relating to Holocaust memory and representation. For example, the vast majority marginalize the horrors and instead focus on bravery, resilience, and hope.
Refocus: The Films of Joachim Trier
This is the first book-length academic study of Norwegian auteur Joachim Trier's films. The book, written by an author who has followed his work closely for ten years, offers an introduction to all five feature films, from his debut Reprise (2006) to his recent success The Worst Person in the Word (2021). The book investigates the style and themes of Trier's films through a prologue, nine chapters, and an epilogue. The main section of the book looks closely at selected tropes across Trier's films, such as memory, time, and identity, as well as his style and his innovative use of montage, voice-over and settings. The prologue place Trier in contemporary Norwegian cinema and discuss his different inspirations and collaborations. An interview with Joachim Trier makes up the epilogue of the book.
Transgressive Art Films
Transgressive Art Films offers a holistic approach to the way we consider controversial and extreme cinema - not just as individual or grouped texts for analysis - but as artefacts that ought to be considered within a complex network of social factors. This book provides a rigorous framework for understanding some of the most controversial films of the past twenty-five years. The term 'transgressive art film' designates the phenomenon of a small number of controversial films recuperated each year by the cinema art world as part of an expansion of the definition of film art. Rather than seeing controversial films as aberrations, this book suggests that transgressive art films should be understood as a socio-cultural phenomenon and a central plank of cinema's need for newness, innovation, and renewal. By paying attention to all scales of cinema, from close analysis of individual frames, through the discourse constructed around them, up to global distribution and film-festival networks, Transgressive Art Films details how certain kinds of cinematic transgression gain wide-ranging institutional support rather than being ignored or forgotten.
Refocus: The Films of Annemarie Jacir
This book offers a transnational, internationalist-feminist approach to the oeuvre of award-winning director, writer, and curator, Annemarie Jacir.Palestinian film culture is unique due to its geopolitical circumstances, including continued colonialism and occupation, and the refugeeship of its citizens. The scholarship on the politics of film and its role in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict - including activist work, international solidarity films, and work on Palestinian documentaries - is usually defined by historical overviews of geopolitical events and developments. In contrast, this book offers an auteur-focused study of a global artist influenced by but not limited to the political discourse surrounding the Occupied Palestinian Territories.Jacir is a Palestinian woman whose work is recognised globally as innovative, politically challenging, and genre-crossing. The book offers an in-depth study of her films and other works by locating it in a geospatial, sociocultural, and critical theoretical framework. It critically analyses Annemarie Jacir's development as an artist, filmmaker, and curator of film.
The Extreme Cinema of Eastern Europe
The Extreme Cinema of Eastern Europe examines extreme, transgressive cinema which developed following a post-2000 wave in filmmaking that aestheticised violence on audio-visual, narrative and thematic levels.Batori investigates the ways in which contemporary national trends from within Eastern Europe correspond to the global stream of transgressive filmmaking and shock aesthetics that have become the dominant markers of world cinema. Do these art productions intend to reveal and criticise aggressions in domestic landscapes or are they part of a contemporary global visual discourse? With a specific focus on gender, this book highlights both nation-specific features of these films and their relationship to global extreme art films.
The Late and Post-Dictatorship Cinephilia Boom and Art Houses in South Korea
This monograph examines an unexplored area of South Korean cinema history- the 1985-1997 growth of art film exhibition, consumption, and cinephilia. This moment of heightened interest in art film altered how many Koreans conceptualised cinema and helped pave the way for the critical success of South Korean film. This historical study analyses the cultural, political, social, and economic developments of the post-1985 period that increased interest in European art film. It looks at the interactions of art house exhibitors with cinephile audiences, the media and the state-level administrators responsible for governing the industry. The aim of young cinephiles was nothing less than a bottom-up cultural transformation of a society emerging from three decades of dictatorship. The analysis is based on the previously unheard voices of audiences who participated in the cinephilia. This study is both a history of an era in Korean cinema and an argument about the impact of this period of cultural renewal on the industry.
Refocus: The Films of Susan Seidelman
This first collection devoted to Susan Seidelman -- director, producer and visionary of feminist American cinema and television - includes never-before-published archival material and an interview with insights into her process and thoughts on #timesup and the future of the industry. Her debut feature, Smithereens, was the first American independent film to compete for the Palme d'Or at Cannes. Her knack for casting saw her insist on Madonna for Desperately Seeking Susan before Madonna was famous. Seidelman directed Meryl Streep and John Malkovich in their first comedy features, Roseanne Barr in her first feature film and Laverne Cox in one of her earliest features. Seidelman also directed the Sex and the City pilot, kickstarting a global phenomenon. Seidelman's career is one of firsts, yet little is written about her. This collection begins filling that gap while opening the door for additional scholarship, making this a valuable text for years to come.
Refocus: The Films of Steve McQueen
Working across a range of formats, from video art and gallery installations to independent cinema to Hollywood to the BBC, Steve McQueen's prodigious output has been marked by formal ambition and political urgency. This vital collection interrogates his body of work, its political, aesthetic and institutional dimensions, and the interfaces between them. It offers critical insights into McQueen's engagements with race, gender, the body, love and pain, and his abiding self-reflexive interest in the potential of multiple audio-visual forms. The first director to win both the Turner Prize and an Oscar for best picture, McQueen is probably the most important working British film maker. This book explores the controversies as well as the achievements in his stellar career so far.
Liminal Noir in Classical World Cinema
While few can deny its incalculable influence on popular filmmaking during and after World War II, film noir has been and remains one of the most contentious categories of cinema, involving more debates than consensus about what constitutes a noir. This collection explores the amorphous parameters of this dark cinematic phenomenon by utilising an expanded, nuanced definition of film noir, which reaches beyond traditional conceptions of genre, style, and cycle to examine its complex international origins and emphasis on issues of liminality. Through illuminating case studies of single films from nations including Argentina, the former Czechoslovakia, France, Great Britain, Poland, Spain, and the US, authors consider elements of genre hybridity, border crossing, boundary breaching, and other signifiers of liminality to reassess classical-era films that defy conventional generic and stylistic categorisation.
Women in East Asian Cinema
Women in East Asian Cinema brings together new and emerging work to highlight and explore the understudied contributions of women to the films and creative industries of East Asia. It is a book which foregrounds the importance of re-historicising women's creative labour in film, not just as actors on screen, but as voices who have steered the production, circulation and consumption of these films across global contexts.Over three sections, the book provides perspectives on gender representation in East and South-East Asian cinema; new explorations of women's labour contributions as directors, screenwriters, and editors; and considerations of the contemporary circulation processes through which such work reaches global audiences.By recentring women's film histories within the broader history of cinema and interrogating the geo-political boundaries of what might constitute 'East Asia' in the process, this volume makes a robust intervention into studies of East Asian cinema and women in film.

Steven Spielberg's Children
Why has Steven Spielberg's work been so often identified with childhood and children? How does the director elicit such complex performances from his young actors? Steven Spielberg's Children is the first book to investigate children, childhood, and Spielberg's employment of child actors together and in depth. Through a series of lively readings of both the celebrated performances he elicits from his young stars in films such as E.T.: The Extra Terrestrial, A.I.: Artificial Intelligence, and Empire of the Sun, as well as less discussed roles in films such as War of the Worlds, The BFG, and Jurassic Park, this book shows children to be key players in the director's articulation of childhood since the 1970s. Steven Spielberg's Children presents children and childhood in some surprising ways, not only analyzing boyhood and girlhood according to Spielberg, but considering children as alien, adult-children who refuse to grow up, and children who aren't even human. It discusses the way in which children have served to cast Spielberg as a sentimentalist, but also how they are more frequently framed as complex, cruel, and canny. The child might be dangled as bait in an exploitation horror scenario (Jaws), might become the image of universal higher beings (Close Encounters of the Third Kind), or might be a young cultural creator like the director was himself (The Fabelmans), "born with a camera glued to [his] eye." The child, on both sides of the camera, is a resonant image, signifying all that adult culture wants it to be, yet resisting this through authorship of their own stories. The book also looks at Spielberg's young actors in the long history of child stars in theater and cinema, and how Spielberg's children have fared as performers and celebrities.
Adventures in Animation
Richard Williams' riveting look back on his life and career as the Oscar-winning creator of the animation for Who Framed Roger Rabbit.Triple-Oscar-winning, world-renowned animator - and author of the seminal book The Animator's Survival Kit - Richard Williams' legendary career in the world of animation is brought to the page here for the first time. Written with his wife and collaborator, Imogen Sutton, Adventures in Animation follows the life and career of this pivotal figure in animated features, from the influential moment when, aged five, Williams saw Snow White, right through his career of more than sixty years. Over those decades, Williams created full-length features, short films, title sequences for films and hundreds of commercials - all of which were graced by his characteristically elegant, sinuous lines and magnificent imagination. Williams' place in animation history is assured: he directed the Academy Award-winning 1971 adaptation of A Christmas Carol and perhaps most famously worked as Director of Animation on Who Framed Roger Rabbit, for which he won two Academy Awards. Serving as the linkman between the original creators of the world of Disney (Snow White, Dumbo, The Jungle Book) and the current generation of digital animators (Toy Story, The Incredibles and Ice Age), it is fair to say that his like will not be seen again. Williams' first book, The Animator's Survival Kit, and the masterclasses he ran, saw him pass on his hard-won craft to future generations of animators. In Adventures in Animation, the story of the man behind the images will inspire them all over again, bringing more animators and fans of animation to the life and work of this master of the artform.
Eternal Current Events
The first English translation of Chris Marker's early writings on film, religion, philosophy, politics, and art. Before making his first films in the 1950s, Chris Marker was a regular contributor to the Paris-based magazine Esprit from 1946 to 1952. Unbound by genre or form, Marker's pieces range from short stories, essays, poems, and reviews to fabricated reportage and invented news affairs, all gemmed with the hallmarks of his style: a blurring of reality and imagination, a wry sense of humor, a sustained political engagement, and, of course, a limitless curiosity for animal life. Eternal Current Events marks the first time these exemplary works are available in English, published in an adapted facsimile of the original periodical. In these short selections, what one encounters is less a past life before his turn toward cinema than a preamble to his celebrated body of work. Moving images did not replace Marker's production as a writer but were incorporated into it. Before the "imaginary films" there were "imaginary current events"; before the travels through time in La Jet矇e there was a bulletin rethinking the psychogeography of the around-the-world trip; and before the musings on a Japanese temple consecrated to cats in Sans Soleil, there was a summary report on the theological implications of the 1952 Parisian Cat Fair. Marker did not just begin his career as a writer, he remained one throughout his life.
John Ford璽(TM)s Cavalry Trilogy
The study analyzes John Ford's films Fort Apache (1948), She Wore a Yellow Ribbon (1949), and Rio Grande (1950) for their historical portrayal of the frontier cavalry. Ford is acknowledged as one of America's foremost chroniclers and mythmakers. His films comprise a significant body of film and cultural history, reflect his values and attitudes, and offer conflicts between historical accuracy and cinematic considerations. The analysis begins by examining the personal and business influences shaping Ford's work. The study then examines each film for historical accuracy in the areas of people, places, and events: uniforms, equipment, and accouterments; the profession and garrison life; and finally, the American Indian and military operations. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it. Steve McQueen
Steve McQueen: Interviews is the first collection of conversations with the acclaimed filmmaker, and one that spans his career to date. Included are McQueen's discussions with such artists, critics, curators, and public intellectuals as Donna De Salvo, Paul Gilroy, David Olusoga, Tricky, and Cornel West. In these conversations, McQueen (b. 1969) discusses some of his preoccupations and recurring themes throughout his oeuvre including nationalism, martyrdom, and violence; obsession and desire; and the intertwined histories of racism, surveillance, and carceral politics. Most interestingly, he also talks about his love for his fellow artists, past and present, including Miles Davis, Jean-Luc Godard, Prince, Yvonne Rainer, Paul Robeson, Jean Vigo, and Andy Warhol. McQueen is one of the most celebrated British filmmakers of his generation, an artist as committed to avant-garde film and lyric forms of documentary as he is to producing landmark historical dramas. A deeply humane artist with a clear ethical drive, McQueen nevertheless explores the sublime sense of scale that cinema affords its viewers in his films. While he remains best known for his feature film 12 Years a Slave--winner of three Academy Awards including Best Picture--McQueen has been a fixture of major contemporary museum and gallery exhibitions for decades, beginning with the short experimental works that garnered him the prestigious Turner Prize in 1999. His acclaimed installations include the diptychs Caribs' Leap/Western Deep and Gravesend/Unexploded, works that interrogate film form as they challenge documentary norms, not unlike his recent four-and-a-half-hour epic Occupied City that investigates the Nazi occupation of Amsterdam.
