Love Dances: Loss and Mourning in Intercultural Collaboration explores global relationality within the realm ofintercultural collaboration in contemporary dance. Author SanSan Kwan looks specifically at duets, focusing on "East" "West" pairings, and how dance artists from different cultural and movement backgrounds -Asia, the Asian diaspora, Europe, and the United States; trained in contemporary dance, hip hop, flamenco, Thai classical dance, kabuki, and butoh - find ways to collaborate. Kwan acknowledges the forces of dissension, prejudice, and violence present in any contact zone, but ultimately asserts that choreographic invention across difference can be an act of love in the face of loss and serve as a model for difficult, imaginative, compassionate global affiliation. Love Dances contends that the practice and performance of dance serves as a revelatory site for working across culture. Body-to-body interaction on the stage carries the potential to model everyday encounters across difference in the world.

For two decades, Tommy Tune was the maestro presiding over a string of glittering Broadway musicals that took the tradition of complete musical stagingby a director-choreographer into a new era defined by spectacle and technology. He was last in a grand lineage led by Jerome Robbins, Gower Champion, Bob Fosse, and Michael Bennett, but also provided a link to a new generation of choreographers-turned-directors like Susan Stroman, Jerry Mitchell, and Casey Nicholaw. Unlike his fellow director-choreographers, Tune also maintained a successful performing career. His nine Tony Awards (plus a tenth, for Lifetime Achievement) were earned across four categories, not only for choreography and direction, but also as both featured and lead actor in a musical, for Seesawand My One and Only--a distinction no one else can claim. Tune took the musical forward by looking backward, bringing satiric energy and contemporary style to a trove of show business antecedents--from clog dancing to showgirl formations, from precision kick lines to Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers-style ballroom glides. He did the same with his concert andcabaret performances, drawing on classics from the Gershwins, Irving Berlin, and Cole Porter and performing them not as nostalgia but as vital, immediate statements of personal philosophy. Everything is Choreography: The Musical Theater of Tommy Tune is the first full scale book about the career of this prodigious artist. Dances of Mexico
Mexico's heritage of folk dance is rich in music and costume. Centuries ago the people were encouraged by the friars to dramatise religious teaching by dancing to the beat of drums and the rattle of gourds. Today their folk music has developed from primitive percussion to a blend of Spanish and native cultures. It may be strummed on an instrument made from the shell of an armadillo or played on the more orthodox guitar, but whatever the instrument it is the rhythms that more than all else characterise the people's dancing. They are like no others in the world.Born near Pachuca, a mountain town in the high Mexican plateau, Guillermina Dickins passed her childhood in the half-feudal world of the great haciendas. Later she journeyed to the remotest corners of her country, studying the infinite variety of its dance, its music and its tradition.She gives here three of the most colourful and famous dances of all. Complete with music and step notations and four colour plates, by the Mexican artist Mireya Iturbe, the book is a fascinating introduction to this land of grace and gaiety.
