Waves of Belonging
Showcases surfing as a site of social belonging and power formationThe surf zone--the place between ocean and shore--offers a powerful space to reflect on the dynamic contemporary politics of our worlds. Surfing always occurs on Indigenous lands, and centering Indigeneity in surfing studies both recognizes this fundamental fact and creates a different starting point for connecting surfing, storytelling, power, and relationships. In Waves of Belonging, Lydia Heberling, David Kamper, and Jess Ponting gather essays by scholars and practitioners that grapple with power, identity, and belonging while remaining grounded in a sense of hope and futurity.Contributors explore how Black, Indigenous, Latinx, queer and trans, and female-identifying communities transform surfing culture into possibilities for new imagined relations. The essays also interrogate the implications of the COVID-19 pandemic and twenty-first century racial protest movements as they manifest in surfing communities, geographies, and cultures across the world. Throughout the volume, surfing emerges as a method for decolonizing, righting historical wrongs, and restoring relationship with lands and waters and as a praxis for language learning.Original and timely, Waves of Belonging challenges the histories of exclusivity associated with surfing and demonstrates how Black, Indigenous, and LGBTQ+ people have drawn on surfing's counterculture reputation to construct new spaces of hope and community.
Blockchain in Sports
This is the first book to examine the impact of blockchain technology on the business of sport. It introduces the fundamentals of blockchain, and explores its current and prospective applications in sport, as well the implications - both positive and negative - of blockchain for the future of the global sport industry. The book opens by explaining how blockchain works, assuming no prior knowledge on the part of the reader, and introduces the most important aspects of blockchain in practice, such as Non Fungible Tokens (NFTs) and Decentralised Autonomous Organisations (NAOs), as well as new ways of gathering data, such as The Internet of Things, that interact with blockchain infrastructure. The book then examines blockchain in relation to functional areas of sport business, including marketing and fan engagement, athlete contracting and doping records, sport betting markets, fantasy leagues and esports. This is essential reading for anybody with an interest in sport business and management, e-commerce, or the impact of new technologies on the economy and wider society.
Interrogating Integration
Interrogating Integration explores how international sporting spectacles, media campaigns, and public debates construct racialized national identity in an era of rising right-wing nationalism. Across Europe, "integration" has emerged as a guiding concept to regulate cultural differences, particularly in Germany, where integration became a watchword after the introduction of birthright citizenship in 2000. The legal expansion of German citizenship threatened the homogeneous definition of the nation and spurred increased scrutiny of immigrants and Germans of color, primarily Muslim and Black Germans. This opened a new chapter in the long struggle over German identity. The celebrations, scandals, and debates analyzed here reveal how the admission of new citizens inspired an optimistic cosmopolitanism that claimed to differentiate the new Germany from its fascist past while simultaneously reinscribing racialized hierarchies and providing fuel for rising far-right politics. Using touchstones of public memory, including events surrounding men's World Cup soccer and the record-breaking success of a book blaming Muslims for Germany's decline, Zambon examines persistent problems in European conceptions of race, where racializing projects take place under an "ideology of racelessness" and the atrocities of historical and transnational racisms are used to deny current local forms of racism.

Skateboarding and Philosophy
The histories of skateboarding and philosophy are not entirely dissimilar. Skateboarding got its start in the middle of the 20th century and quickly garnered a reputation as an activity that both attracted and encouraged a sort of lawless rebellion. In a similar vein, not long after its inception, philosophy was most commonly known for its out-of-the-box questioning of authority. However, both skating and philosophy eventually crept into the mainstream of society and have since earned their place as permanent fixtures in the culture. With all they have in common, it's only appropriate that the two should intersect in this book. This collection of 19 new essays (written by philosophers who are also skaters and skating enthusiasts) covers a wide variety of topics important to skating such as its culture, politics, history, art, and status as a sport. If you're a skater (or someone who simply appreciates skating), and you're interested in thinking a bit more carefully--a bit more deeply--about skateboarding, this book was put together to help you do just that.

SIL LUM KUNG FU The Chinese Art of Self-Defense Revised Edition
Goodbye, Oakland
A fascinating tour of Oakland sports history and a look toward the future of professional sports in the East Bay. Oakland is a sports city like no other. It is the only city in America to be abandoned by the same team twice, with the Raiders most recently leaving for Las Vegas. The Golden State Warriors, who crossed the bay in 1971 in search of better digs, have now returned to San Francisco with trophies in tow. After a long-fought battle against fans and the city itself, the Oakland Athletics completed the inglorious hat trick of departures. And yet, Oakland has produced more than its share of success in the form of 10 league championships across the NFL, NBA, and MLB. The city is gritty, gutsy, and self-preserving, with a blue-collar mentality and a gold standard under that collar. Bolstered by the Silicon Valley tech boom, Oakland has become one of the most desirable places to live in the entire country, all while its sports fans are increasingly made to feel that, in the famous words of Gertrude Stein, "There is no there there." What is it about Oakland that inspires such wanderlust in its professional teams? Featuring numerous conversations with luminaries across sports, politics, and economics, this new book explores Oakland's fascinating and paradoxical identity as a sports town while illuminating a cast of characters as diverse as the city itself: rogues, superstars, movers and shakers operating on and off the field, and the ill-treated fans. Through the insight of venerated Oakland Tribune scribe Dave Newhouse and sports business leader Andy Dolich, readers will come to appreciate the many quirks and challenges that define "The Town."
Medal Count--the Fate of Nations at the Olympics
This book explores complex factors that determine Olympic success, exploring why certain nations consistently dominate the medal tables while others struggle to secure even a single medal. Dr. Theuer, a physician and epidemiologist, applies statistical analyses to uncover the national characteristics that drive Olympic achievement, focusing on measurable factors such as national wealth and democratic governance. But the book also examines less quantifiable influences-genetics, the impact of immigration, and sports accessibility-providing a multifaceted view of athletic empowerment. In a sense, the book explores human empowerment viewed through the lens of Olympic success.Drawing inspiration from works like Freakonomics by Steven Levitt and Stephen Dubner, Outliers by Malcolm Gladwell, and Factfulness by Hans Rosling, Medal Count-The Fate of Nations at the Olympics uses mathematics and socioeconomics to answer the question: What accounts for Olympic success? While national wealth is the most significant contributor, the book reveals that there are deeper, more nuanced factors that nations can leverage to empower their athletes. Through detailed case studies, Dr. Theuer illustrates how Norway far outperforms expectations through maximal athletic empowerment, winning Olympic medals at rates 48 times higher than would be expected based on its population size. In contrast, countries with extreme poverty or rigid caste systems, such as most sub-Saharan African nations or India and Pakistan, face challenges in achieving Olympic success. Genetic diversity, spurred by immigration into wealthy countries, plays a role in boosting athletic performance, though it is a less tangible factor. The book also examines nations that excel in less capital-intensive sports, such as Jamaica's and Kenya's dominance in track and field, Fiji's success in rugby, and Kyrgyzstan's success in wrestling despite lacking vast wealth or large populations. Dr. Theuer proposes a model of athletic empowerment, showing that nations can apply lessons from Olympic success to foster not only greater sports achievement but broader societal progress. Ultimately, Medal Count-The Fate of Nations at the Olympics argues that athletic empowerment is a key form of human empowerment, with positive effects that ripple out into many aspects of society, leading to success beyond the sports arena.REVIEWS and WORDS OF PRAISE Dr. Theuer has made a stellar contribution that will remain in my heart, soul, and mind for a while. Unintentionally, he told my story without even knowing it. From the time I was 4 years old I wanted to become a professional world boxing champion and started my quest as an amateur boxer at the age of 8. I learned the words donation, per diem, subsistence, and stipend, as they represented access to essential resources that empowered my march to become Captain of the U.S. National Boxing Team, and set the stage for a professional career that culminated as IBF Junior Middleweight Champion of the world. Yes, as Dr. Theuer notes, talent is a terrible thing to waste. But it's also a heartbreaking reality that, more often than we recognize, talent reaches a stop sign because of insufficient support. Medal Count offers a framework for fostering global athletic empowerment, sure to resonate with everyone who values the triumphs of human achievement. ---Paul "The Ultimate" Vaden United States National Boxing Team Captain (1989 and 1990), Retired International Boxing Federation World Junior Middleweight Champion
