The Fast Track
"No one cares about women's sports" is a familiar refrain from vocal skeptics, but as The Fact Track shows, a series of watershed moments reflect the increasing popularity of and support for women's sports from both investors and fans. Veteran sports journalist and academic Jane McManus examines both this upward trend and the forces that have held women's sports back since the early 1970s when Title IX became law (and Billie Jean King soundly defeated Bobby Riggs). As the fervor for Caitlin Clark during the 2024 NCAA Women's Basketball championship illustrates, there is big money to be made from broadcasting, merchandising, and investing in women's sports. The Fast Track chronicles how pioneering sponsorships, broadcast opportunities, and surges in ratings contradict the myths about disinterest. Interviews counter the resistance toward women's leagues, reveal how women are covered in the media, and consider the possibilities for further investment. McManus also addresses racial inclusivity, transgender athletes, women's health issues, and equal pay. An essential road map to capitalize on untapped potential, The Fast Track provides a snapshot of where women's sports as an industry and investment stand at this moment in time.
Heavyweight Title Fights of the 1980s
Bookended by two all-time greats in Larry Holmes and Mike Tyson, the much-maligned 1980s were significant in heavyweight boxing. Holmes dominated the first half of the decade, but the "Easton Assassin" struggled to escape the shadow of Muhammad Ali. Holmes did establish a legacy of greatness despite stumbling in his attempt to surpass Rocky Marciano's unbeaten record of 49-0. The second half of the decade saw the meteoric rise of Mike Tyson, who cleaned out and unified a fractured heavyweight division through the HBO unification tournament. The '80s was also the decade of fighters collectively known as the "lost generation" of heavyweights. That included the likes of Greg Page, Tony Tubbs, Tim Witherspoon, and Michael Dokes, who, for various reasons, couldn't sustain a period at the top of the game. However, they still deserve to be remembered for more than their failings. This book presents a thorough history of a stunning decade in heavyweight boxing, covering all 46 world title fights in detail.

New Black Cyclones
'Cycling as never told before' - Nicholas Dlamini, South African cycling champion'Revolutionary' - Bradley Wiggins, British Tour de France champion This is a call for a revolution by the global Black cycling community to reform the sport and for changing the way cycling is seen. Despite the rise of anti-racism in light of the Black Lives Matter movement, professional cycling is still predominately a white and European-centred sport. Former international racing cyclist Marlon Lee Moncrieffe and author of the award-winning Desire, Discrimination, Determination - Black Champions in Cycling examines how the industry is tackling racism within the sport today. Sharing his experiences and learnings from his journeys across the UK, the USA and the African continent, Moncrieffe brings together the voices of Black cycling cultures. He speaks to Black elite and professional riders, members of national cycling bodies, commentators, grassroots riders, community leaders, teachers and activists, discovering how they are disrupting the sport's white-led norms of power. In response to his commentary and evidence, Moncrieffe invites us to critically consider the past, present and future of the sport. What transformations, if any, towards equality in Black representation and empowerment are happening in the world of cycling - and particularly in the highest realms of the sport? What could be the potential force of Black cycling movements across the world converging as 'New Black Cyclones' in reforming how the sport is seen and known?
Social Justice Through Sport and Exercise Psychology
Social Justice Through Sport and Exercise Psychology: Intergenerational Voices and An Embodied Approach provides a narration of the history of social justice work in sport and exercise psychology as advanced through the voices of those leaders who have dared to imagine a more just and equitable sporting world. By situating their history through critical genealogy, within an analysis of the larger social relationships of power in both the competitive sporting context and the field of sport and exercise psychology (including patriarchy, sexism, racism, classism, ableism, and homonegativity), an effort is made to illuminate their political lineages and how these individuals utilized social justice theories and critical reflexivity in their work. The fourfold purpose of this brand new and cutting-edge volume is to (1) frame the critical genealogy and political lineages of leaders in the field of sport and exercise psychology, who have promoted social justice in their work; (2) provide an autobiographical sketch for each of the authors that chronicles the ways their life experiences and trajectories have influenced their respective philosophies of social justice; (3) flesh out how those philosophies are evidenced, both implicitly and explicitly, in their work; and (4) illustrate how a social justice framework has informed their respective consulting philosophies.Social Justice Through Sport and Exercise Psychology: Intergenerational Voices and An Embodied Approach is key reading not only for scholars, students, and practitioners in the field of sport and exercise psychology but also for those in the subdisciplines of sport sociology, athletic training, and strength and conditioning, as well as licensed professional counsellors, licensed clinical social workers, and certified athletic trainers.

More Than Just a Game
In More Than Just a Game, the authors present compelling first-person stories, original research, and much-needed perspective about the billion-dollar youth-sports industry. This book will explore parental attitudes and struggles and show parents how to navigate the profit-driven system of youth sports that frequently ignores the needs of kids. Dr. Bjork and Dr. Hoynes examine the most pressing issues in the world of youth sports, including: How taxing athletics can be developmentally for children. The financial impact the ever-popular travel teams have on families. Excessive time commitments and expectations. The conundrums and challenging decisions the families of young athletes' face. Inherent disadvantages of being an underprivileged young athlete. They connect the patterns in the behavior of the adults they observed to broader trends in our society. They also provide parents with the information they need to understand the contemporary youth-sports industry--to see the bigger picture--and help them make conscious and more informed decisions for their children that are consistent with their core values. Concrete suggestions are highlighted, such as how to identify the appropriate team for a child, how to select activities that will help young athletes develop emotional and physical resilience, and ways that parents can create balance in their children's lives. Ultimately, the authors' eye-opening research gives youth-sports parents a grounded perspective that will help their kids find success on and off the field.
Black Sporting Resistance
In recent years, there has been increased attention towards activism in sporting spaces. A vast majority of these contributions have focused on intra-nation tensions and impact. Yet, there is a dearth of scholarship that has engaged in a theoretically grounded analysis of how Black sportspersons have exhibited resistance in and through sport across national borders across time, space, and context. In this text, Joseph N. Cooper introduces the Black Sporting Resistance Framework (BSRF) as an analytic lens to examine how resistance actions in and through sport have contributed to the advancement of local and global racial justice efforts. Key concepts such as African (Black) diaspora, transnationalism, internationalism, sporting resistance typology, and sport activism typology are incorporated throughout the book. Black sporting resistance is also analyzed alongside broader social movements such as the Black Liberation Struggle, Black Nationalism, Pan-Africanism, and Black Radicalism. Insights on the ways in which sport can be used to advance social justice in the future are presented.

Through interviews with players, designers, and fans, alongside a rich collection of photographs and illustrations, "Fabric of the Game" reveals the untold stories behind these essential yet often overlooked pieces of sporting attire. This book is not just for rugby league enthusiasts but for anyone interested in the intersection of sports, fashion, and culture. It's a celebration of how a simple piece of fabric can hold the history and heart of a game.
Democratic Values and Sportsmanship in School Recreation
A Voice for the Horse
More than three decades of serious study, research and teaching are brought to light in this book. The work I show here is the direct result of those experiences and my love of the horse. I have been very fortunate in having some excellent tuition and coaching from many world-class teachers in many different disciplines. Throughout all I will often refer to my time with Tom Dorrance, who despite never having taken a lesson from a human in his life about horses, still accomplished more than any man I know with regard to understanding how a horse thinks and behaves. Tom once said "A lot of people ask me to teach them how to do something. I say, I can't teach you anything. I might be able to help you learn to do something, if you want to learn it, but it has to come from you." I hope this book will shine a light in the right direction. JSR
