Equine Behaviour in Practice
Combining an in-depth exploration of equine behaviour with clinical practice from a new progressive perspective, Equine Behaviour in Practice: Understanding Horses and Treating Behaviour Problems focuses not just on the horse's behaviour but also on the behaviour of the human interacting with the horse. Acclaimed Clinical Equine Behaviourist Debbie Busby delivers evidence-based knowledge that will equip readers with the understanding and skills to become effective equine behaviour consultants. Supported by considered discussion of how and why horses sometimes struggle to cope, the book comprehensively explains how to consult on and treat a range of equine behaviour problems. Rather than providing a formulaic "here's the problem; here's how to fix it", Busby encourages readers to develop a critical biopsychosocial evaluation based on an understanding of how horses evolved, their ethological and physiological adaptations, how they learn, and how their welfare and wellbeing can be assessed. KEY FEATURES: Part 1 explains theories of equine evolution and the thin veneer of domestication Part 2 describes psychological and physiological theories of how horses learn, and how this can be applied in training and behaviour modification Part 3 illustrates this with reference to relevant legislation and widely used animal welfare models, as well as assessments of abnormal and stereotypic behaviour and practical aspects of measuring welfare Part 4 turns to the theory and practice of behaviour consulting, in three chapters divided into elements of behavioural assessment and treatment planning Part 5 examines the use of psychopharmaceuticals in behaviour therapy, discussing the roles of the behaviour consultant and the referring veterinary surgeon Bridging the gap between science and practice, this book is a must-read for equine behaviour and veterinary students, equine behaviour consultants and practitioners, horse trainers, interested leisure riders and competition riders. It will empower equine professionals to combine behavioural and welfare knowledge with counselling and coaching skills to support horse owners in a mutual flourishing, enriching the lives of both species.
Jack Dillon
In the weight sensitive sport of boxing, Jack Dillon, "The Giant Killer," was considered an anomaly. Size was irrelevant; besides, it was only a factor if he accepted as such. He refused. Sturdy, compact and indestructible, yet capable of turning on a dime, Dillon not only defeated his opponents, he humiliated them. This dynamic defined his prolific and unparalleled career (1908-1925). His accepted record of 94-7-14, with 129 no decisions and one no contest (64 victories by way of knockout), put him in elite company with other members of the International Boxing Hall of Fame. While he claimed the middleweight championship for over two years, the unrivaled Hoosier pugilist was often recognized as the world light heavyweight champion. Moving up a division, he disposed of heavyweight contenders like tissues during flu season. On June 29, 1916, Dillon defeated Frank Moran and was clearly the top contender for giant Jess Willard's heavyweight crown. Yet, Willard, who outweighed Dillon by 60 pounds, and was about a foot taller, refused. This first biography of the celebrated pugilist is based on contemporaneous newspaper accounts of the time and includes several appendices with career statistics and a selected boxing record.

Special Olympics
This book brings together academic work on Special Olympics and specifically on the social inclusion of people with intellectual disabilities in various sport contexts and other areas of life, by ways of both empirical research and theoretically informed papers.Inclusion in sport is a topic that is mostly explored in connection with the participation of people with disabilities in general. In public debates on inclusion and sport in the global society, participation is predominantly discussed in a normative way, e.g., in connection with the campaign The Revolution is Inclusion by Special Olympics, describing it as an "all-out effort to end discrimination against people with intellectual disabilities". With this international collection, the authors seek to contribute to an interdisciplinary understanding of Special Olympics in Context of Inclusion Debates and establish a foundation for future scholarship. The chapters in this book can contribute to a new research agenda on Special Olympics, particularly participatory approaches. The chapters in this book were originally published in Sport in Society.

Home Is Everything: The Latino Baseball Story
Roberto Clemente, Minnie Minoso, Orlando Cepeda, Miguel Tejada and JosA(c) Santana. These men are the immortals, the pioneers, the famous, the soon-to-be famous and the forgotten ones. They know that home is everything-home is the barrio where they improvised baseball on unpaved streets and sandlots; home is home plate where the batter stands waiting for the next pitch, where runs are scored and games are won; and home is the magical ballparks of major league baseball where they dream to play. Villegas' wonderful full-color photographs, with Breton's companion bilingual text, reveal the essence of the Latino ballplayers' journey: the struggles, dis-appointments and the sometimes enormous successes. The book features the journey of Miguel Tejada, All-Star shortstop for the Oakland Athletics, from his barrio in the Dominican Republic through his 2002 breakout year. The photographs let us witness the barrios where the dreaming begins, the young dreamers who will never leave their home, the major league facilities where young players learn English and gringo baseball, the forgotten players playing semi-pro in the Bronx and keeping their dreams alive, Latinos struggling through the foreign world of the minor leagues, the major leaguers and the immortals.Preface by Orlando the Baby Bull Cepeda from Ponce, Puerto Rico. Lifetime .297 batting average, 379 homeruns, MVP 1967 with the Cardinals, Hall of Fame 1999. Arum and King
A fascinating, behind-the-scenes look at the two most iconic boxing promoters in the last 100 years. When it comes to boxing promoters, there are no two figures more successful than Bob Arum and Don King. Both ruled the sport at the highest level for several decades, promoting such superstars as Mike Tyson, Larry Holmes, Muhammad Ali, Oscar De La Hoya, Floyd Mayweather, and Manny Pacquiao. In Arum and King: Six Decades of Boxing Gold, television producer and director Marty Corwin provides a unique perspective into the lives and careers of these two legends. As the only person to have been a department head for both promoters, Corwin offers fresh insight into what happens before, during, and after the fights--the dealings, the prep work, the negotiations, the mind games--and shares it all in this book for the first time. In addition, Corwin takes readers inside the complex world of broadcasting for some of boxing's most iconic moments. There will never be another Bob Arum or Don King. Boxing promotion has changed dramatically since both men began their careers. Today, hundreds of internet channels, streaming services, social networks, and broadcast outlets muddy the promotional waters. The inside stories featured in Arum and King therefore reveal not only the difficult, risky, and exhausting lives of boxing promoters, but also deliver a glimpse into the end of an era.
Cheerleaders VS Umpires
We live in a time when the lines between truth and error, right and wrong, are increasingly blurred. In today's culture, which often drifts further from the Word of God, we must ask ourselves a fundamental question: Are we cheerleaders or umpires? We are merely using a comparison to point out the necessity of ascertaining a biblical worldview. The cheerleaders' primary role is to support their team, regardless of its performance or how unearned their victory may seem. While cheerleaders can bring energy and enthusiasm, they cannot advocate for what is right when it conflicts with their team's interests. Consequently, even a questionable call by an umpire can be seen as beneficial if it aids their team. Conversely, a favorable call may be viewed unfavorably if it disadvantages their team. This principle applies not only in sports but also in politics, race, business, and beyond. On the other hand, umpires are expected to maintain an objective judicial demeanor and officiate a fair game, which means ensuring accuracy and authority in their decisions, regardless of the scoreboard or the approval of fans and teams. So, are you a cheerleader or an umpire? Will you carry out your role, leaning toward a desired outcome, or will you stand firmly on the Word of God? The choice is yours, but only one path leads to a life that glorifies Christ and makes a difference in the world for His kingdom.

Gender Defenders of the Sport Binary
Sex and gender are interconnected, conflated, different, and complex. Arguably, there is no cultural arena more affected by the complexity of sex/gender than sport, where the presumed need for a male/female binary is personalized, medicalized, and politicized. Gender Defenders of the Sport Binary considers how medical, policy, and media discourses shape understanding of nonbinary athletes, and more broadly cultural understandings of gender as chosen and sex as biologically measurable. Tracing discourse across more than 100 years of media coverage, decades of medical debate, and overlapping sport regulatory policies, this book considers how the force of cisgender ideology creates a singular narrative centered on fairness that dominates transgender and intersex women and erases them from elite sport. This book traces the influence of powerful contexts such as language and masculinity in constructing boundaries around who can and cannot fit in women's sport. "In Gender Defenders of the Sport Binary, Bell and Osborne offer a compelling and incisive critique of how sport, medicine, and the media converge to police gender under the guise of fairness. In a time of global debates on gender and athleticism, this thought-provoking book unpacks the exclusionary frameworks that elite sport uses to marginalize transgender and intersex athletes, revealing the deep entanglements between gender ideology and power. Using meticulous research and sharp analysis, the authors challenge us to reconsider the boundaries of inclusion, presenting a vital call to reimagine sport as a space where diversity is not disciplined, but celebrated." -Anna Baeth, Ph.D., Director of Research, Athlete Ally

Positive Sport Organizational Insights
This book is a concise and accessible introduction to positive organizational behavior in sport, a new and dynamic approach to sport management. Clearly explaining core concepts, including the central concept of psychological capital, the book shows how 'positive sport organizations' (PSO) can deliver improved performance and enhance employee well-being. Standing at the intersection of positive psychology and theories of organizational behavior, the PSO approach focuses on the development of the person within the organization - their human strengths and psychological capacities - in contrast to traditional approaches that have a more limited emphasis on human capital or social capital. The book takes a close look at attributes including passion, grit, and a capacity for innovation, that characterize the effective employee in the modern, fast-paced sport business environment and that can be developed through PSO, and it explains how employee flourishing and corporate social responsibility programmes can be mutually reinforcing. With examples and cases from contemporary sport business in every chapter, this is illuminating reading for any student, researcher, policy-maker or practitioner with an interest in sport business and management, organizational behavior, corporate social responsibility, human resource management, or human flourishing.

The Fast Track
"No one cares about women's sports" is a familiar refrain from vocal skeptics, but as The Fact Track shows, a series of watershed moments reflect the increasing popularity of and support for women's sports from both investors and fans. Veteran sports journalist and academic Jane McManus examines both this upward trend and the forces that have held women's sports back since the early 1970s when Title IX became law (and Billie Jean King soundly defeated Bobby Riggs). As the fervor for Caitlin Clark during the 2024 NCAA Women's Basketball championship illustrates, there is big money to be made from broadcasting, merchandising, and investing in women's sports. The Fast Track chronicles how pioneering sponsorships, broadcast opportunities, and surges in ratings contradict the myths about disinterest. Interviews counter the resistance toward women's leagues, reveal how women are covered in the media, and consider the possibilities for further investment. McManus also addresses racial inclusivity, transgender athletes, women's health issues, and equal pay. An essential road map to capitalize on untapped potential, The Fast Track provides a snapshot of where women's sports as an industry and investment stand at this moment in time.
The Moscow Playbook
An eye-opening account of how Russia's leaders have used sports as a political tool to solidify their global power "Victories in sport do more to cement the nation than a hundred political slogans." This was the pep talk Russian athletes heard in 2000 from their new president, Vladimir Putin. And so, for more than two decades, Putin has used sports like his Soviet predecessors to stoke nationalism at home, boost prestige abroad, and cement his position as leader. The Moscow Playbook: How Russia Used, Abused, and Transformed Sports in the Hunt for Gold is the first book to fully examine the intersection of Russian sports and geopolitical power, from the dominant Soviet teams of past Olympics to recent doping scandals and international sanctions. With new research from Olympic archives, records of the Soviet bloc and current Russian media, historian Bruce Berglund shows how Moscow's leaders have defied the rules of the game for decades as the world's governing bodies turned a blind eye. Featuring oligarchs, sportocrats, and famous athletes from Olga Korbut to Alex Ovechkin, this is a timely investigation into the gears of power, nationalism, and money that drive the Russian sports machine.
