That's because they've won each year--since 2004. And as the streak builds, there's more pressure each year on the public school's team to continue that tradition. No year was more tense than the year that they were hoping to take home their 20th straight title.	A Fraction of a Point follows the Bees throughout the intense 2022-2023 season as the team works toward the state meet. During one of their most competitive seasons in recent years, sports journalist Nina Mandell explores the gymnasts' backstories and traces the legacy of the Ganim family, the team's longtime coaches. But this isn't just a story about one historic season. At its heart, it's also about the teenagers balancing athletics with high school life, the larger community that supported the team, what it means to compete for the joy of the sport, and the athletes' and coaches' dedication even while facing immense pressure.	Ultimately, the state title comes down to the final event. As the Bees line up to compete, the gym falls silent. Hundreds of gymnasts and their supporters from around the state watch and wonder: Will the Bees maintain their streak? Or will this be the year it all ends?

Marine Corps Marathon Honor And Pride
This book is a continuation of a collection of runner's stories and how they connect to the MCM. The MCM is not like other marathons as it has multiple layers with a common purpose to live up to the name, "The People's Marathon." It is a feeling that is generated through the actions of the staff, volunteers, and supporting Marines. In 1977, Kitty Consolo recalls after the race she could barely walk, and a Marine carried her to an aid station. Over the 18 years the planning process followed a set pattern, but each year different challenges were faced. The greatest impact on the sport was in the years 2020 and 2021 with COVID-19. The race was charged with the responsibility of the education of the runners and the new running environment. The education involved the volunteers and vendors. The core aspect of the MCM has remained throughout all the years which includes open male and female competition, master male and female competition, the Challenge Cup (The competition between the Royal Navy / Royal Marines vs U.S, Marine Corps), Armed Forces Marathon Championship and the wheelchair (Both push-rim and various handcycles). The other elements include the Hall of Fame where those who have made contributions to the MCM are given recognition. Each year every runner has a "WHY" they are on the starting line. In the following pages you will understand the reasons. If you are a prior finisher or spectator, you will understand.

Leveling the Ice
A deep dive into the institutional racism and prejudice in the sport of hockey that persists across all levels - and how it will impact the future of the sport While professional sports leagues claim to promote diversity and inclusivity, institutional racism remains apparent in all sports, but especially hockey. In Leveling the Ice, sportswriter Steven Sandor challenges the perception that hockey is open to everyone and the idea that the hockey establishment wants more inclusion and diversity. Featuring interviews with NHL players of color like Darnell Nurse, Matt Dumba, Nazeem Kadri, Zach Whitecloud, Ethan Bear, Jason Robertson, Sandor reveals their stories of exclusion to highlight the deeply ingrained racism in the sport. The players share insights into the racism they faced while they built their careers as well as the racism, they still face today from the hockey establishment From hockey's racist past to the ongoing reluctance of the hockey establishment to embrace grassroots diversity initiatives, Sandor delves into how members of communities of color (who only make up 5% of the NHL) are being driven away from the sport to more inclusive ones like soccer and basketball, despite the NHL's expansion to new markets and demographics with billion-dollar TV deals. Comprehensive and timely, Leveling the Ice grapples with how the institutional racism in hockey will directly affect the future of the sport.
A New System Of Horsemanship
A new system of horsemanship is a treatise that outlines systematic approaches to equestrian practices, aiming to refine techniques in horse riding and training. The work highlights the balance between utility and elegance, stressing the importance of posture, handling, and the relationship between horse and rider. The text opens by introducing the basic principles of horsemanship, with a focus on the correct positioning of the rider, particularly the concept of "the Horseman's Seat." It contrasts various cultural riding styles and offers a unified methodology grounded in effective principles. Bourgelat emphasizes maintaining a natural and relaxed posture to achieve both control and grace. Early chapters also discuss the significance of understanding the horse's anatomy and behavior, laying the foundation for more in-depth guidance on horse training and management. Throughout, the treatise aims to provide both theoretical and practical advice, making it a comprehensive work for those seeking a deeper understanding of the art of horsemanship.
Old Man Curry Race Track Stories
Old man curry: Race track stories explores the peculiar dynamics of a racetrack world driven by ambition, cunning, and an odd code of honor. Central to this lively environment is a figure known for his piety, quirks, and deep connection to horses, particularly those named after Biblical characters. The opening narrative, seen through the perceptive lens of a streetwise observer, contrasts the calculated instincts of gamblers with the peculiar philosophy and tactics of a seasoned owner. The racetrack becomes a microcosm where moral nuance surfaces through competitive banter and shifting allegiances. The stories highlight both the absurdities and profound human moments of racing culture, where loyalty and wit are sometimes more valuable than speed. Through humor and sharp dialogue, the text hints at the paradoxical virtues of a setting fueled by luck and ethics in equal measure. The protagonist s unorthodox strategies clash with the deceitful routines of others in the field, suggesting that success may depend less on money or power and more on belief and persistence. The beginning immerses readers in a landscape shaped by calculated risks, eccentric traditions, and the pursuit of something beyond just winning.
How to Win the Premier League
Here for the first time, Graham reveals the fascinating data that informed some of the club's most pivotal moments of the past decade, from the appointment of Jurgen Klopp as manager in 2015 to the signing of Mohamed Salah in 2017. Along the way, he shares groundbreaking insight into the modern game, including how a season largely played behind closed doors transformed our understanding of a home-side advantage, or why the GOAT (greatest of all time) might not be who you think. And, in a game that is increasingly dominated by an elite few oil-backed teams, Graham charts a path for the future where a data-savvy underdog will always find their competitive edge.
Greyhound
For fans of Elizabeth Letts's The Eighty-Dollar Champion comes a compelling and illuminating true story about the greatest racehorse history forgot. Unbeatable like Man O' War, record-breaking speed like Secretariat, and loved by the fans and everyone who knew him like Seabiscuit. While any fan of harness racing will know and talk of Greyhound with deep reverence, outside the world of harness racing, he is almost completely unknown. An ugly, awkward underdog in his early years, Greyhound blossomed into a champion under the care of a millionaire entrepreneur owner, the guidance of a veteran trainer/driver, and the love of a young caretaker who acted as bodyguard, public relations guru, and valet for the horse. Greyhound developed into the fastest trotter in history--his mile record stood for over thirty years--and retired with sixteen of twenty-five world records still unbroken. Greyhound was a celebrity in his day--a horse with such an enigmatic personality some swore he was part human. Brought to life in these pages with painstaking detail and meticulous research, Greyhound's story is both colorful and entertaining. With nearly two hundred historical photographs and racing artifacts, many shared with the public for the first time, and a compendium of race results from the heyday of harness racing, this is more than a feel-good success story--it's the historical record racing enthusiasts have been waiting for. Greyhound is a book for anyone who has known the love of a great horse and everyone who finds inspiration in a Cinderella story.

Young Indo-Fijian Women Breaking Barriers in Fijian Sporting Spaces
This book explores the gendered and racial lived everyday and sporting experiences of Brown migrant young women and girls in Fiji. The author empirically employs a novel visual and arts-based research methodology (ABRM) and arts-based method (ABM) to collect and present the data. Carefully woven non-fiction creative pieces sourced from semi-structured interviews and reflexive ethnographic observations from fieldwork bring to the forefront the voices of Indo-Fijian women and girls. Using an intersectional approach from Gayatri Spivak to Nirmal Puwar, Raewyn Connell and Judith Butler, the author illuminates the triple layer of the marginalities Indo-Fijian women and girls experience in the sporting arena within a settler-colonial context. The book shows the agency of young athletic Indo-Fijian women and how they collectively challenge hegemonic masculinities in sports. This highly timely and original book therefore contributes qualitative intersectional research to the growing body on literature of sporty women of colour in the Global South. Get Up and Fight
"Rusty had that special quality that made you feel like you could fly... that you could do anything, because she was right there with you." - BILLIE JEAN KING, TENNIS CHAMPION & ACTIVISTIn 1959 Rusty's well-earned first place medal was ripped away from her because she was a woman. She fought in a judo championship against a man and won, but when the judges discovered her gender, they stripped her of her title. Women were not allowed. From that point on, Rusty had a new goal: to ensure that no woman would ever suffer such an indignity ever again! This vow sparked a fifty-year career fighting for equality-a tireless battle she would take all the way to the Olympics. In her uniquely raw, unfiltered, humorous voice, Rusty recounts the tales of her remarkable life and journey from the rough streets of Coney Island, Brooklyn, to the offices of the political, powerful and persuasive, where she established herself as a major force in the world of women's rights and the sport of judo, securing women's inclusion on the international stage. Rusty's memoir is a love story filled with passion and righteousness-for her sport, her family, and her way of life as a judoka. Often called a pioneer, Rusty was an unsung hero in the fight to give women voice and agency, in life and in sports. She did not see human limitations, only possibilities. The establishment told her "no," but "no" was not a part of her vocabulary. Instead, Rusty fought like hell, and won.In her own words, Rusty decided to "be the hammer," not the nail.

Enter the Dangal
'When I'm on the mat, I am so filled with this awareness that the slightest touch feels like electricity to my body, and my body reacts to that the same way it would have reacted if I touched a livewire.' Wrestling, kushti, rules the farmlands, as it has for centuries. It had pride of place in the courts of Chalukya kings and Mughal emperors. It was embraced by Hinduism and its epics, and has led its own untroubled revolution against the caste system. The British loved it when they first came to India, then rejected it during the freedom struggle. No, wrestling has never been marginal -- even if it is largely ignored in modern-day narratives of sport and culture. From the Great Gama to Sushil Kumar -- whose two Olympic medals yanked the kushti out of rural obscurity and on to TV screens -- and the many, many pehalwans in between, Enter the Dangal goes behind the scenes to the akharas that quietly defy urbanization. It travels to villages and small towns to meet the intrepid women who fight their way into this 'manly' sport. Beyond the indifferent wrestling associations and an impervious media is an old, old sport.Enter the dangal, and you may never leave.
Bhiwani Junction
'Havana. Harlem. Haryana. There is a thread that runs through these centres of excellence in boxing... They are places where young boys can choose a career in crime if they want to, and they often do. Or, turn to boxing.' Vijender Singh's one bronze medal in Beijing has changed the fortunes of an entire sport in India. At the very least, it dramatically transformed one town: Bhiwani. Or did Bhiwani transform Indian boxing? The nation now knows Bhiwani as being synonymous with the handsome Olympian heartthrob and then some. Boxing is the new sexy, Vijender is the face of it, and Bhiwani is its home. But inspiring as that tale is and considerable though India's successes in the sport have been since his bronze, the story - as is true of everything in India - is more complex. The sport has a long and meandering history, a Raj connection and a nationalist one, and decades of Indian rule and misrule. There have been many boxing centres in the country, beginning with Calcutta and Mumbai. The state of Manipur has had a long, conflicted history with the sport, as has the Indian Army. Blood, sweat, tears and a healthy dose of conspiracy: the story of Indian boxing is dramatic, simultaneously dispiriting and inspiring.

A Games Changer
From the emergence of the COVID pandemic in early 2020 through the delayed staging of the Tokyo Olympic games in summer 2021, A Games Changer takes the reader behind the scenes to explore the myriad challenges the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and Japanese officials faced during the months of uncertainty leading up not only to the postponement of the Games but also to their delayed. Drawing on a thorough review of contemporary newspaper and magazine coverage as well as personal interviews with current and former IOC officials, Stephen R. Wenn and Robert K. Barney examine Japan's rising excitement in 2019 as preparations for the Games accelerated; whispers of a mysterious disease spreading first in China, then worldwide; organizers' initial resolve to press forward with the Games; the tumultuous discussions that ultimately resulted in the joint March 2020 decision by Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and IOC President Thomas Bach to postpone the Games; and the numerous negotiations with venues, media, and sponsors required to extend contracts and protect all parties' health. Wenn and Barney reveal how human relationships-among planners, politicians, competitors, and vaccine researchers-were vital to presenting an Olympics where, in July and August 2021, world records were set, deferred dreams were achieved, and fears of a superspreader event went unrealized. While tracing the struggles of multiple athletes who had to pause their Olympic hopes and training as COVID-19 closed the world, Wenn and Barney focus on the journey of Canadian decathlete Damian Warner and his coach, Gar Leyshon. Denied his usual training venues, he prepared for the rescheduled Games with ingenuity, determination, and adaptability, reflective of the resilience demonstrated by Tokyo's Olympians around the globe. The authors' close account of Warner's two days in Tokyo recaptures the excitement and drama of sport that home viewers sorely needed amid pandemic lockdowns and incalculable personal loss.

When Matajuro finally draws his katana he learns the final lesson of true mastery. On Sports
What are sports, really? What do we love about them? And what, in our digital age, have they become? As a child, David Macfarlane was an avid sports fan--and yet he almost never saw an athletic competition live. Despite the dusty collection of sports equipment in the basement, his parents had little interest in playing or watching sports, televised games were subject to local blackouts, and poor analog reception made hockey pucks disappear in electric snow. Instead, Macfarlane pored daily over the sports pages and brought box scores to school for Current Events, traded the rumours and predictions of sportswriters with his friends, collected trading cards and played sandlot versions of baseball, football and street hockey. Each of these endeavours took place primarily on the boundless fields of the imagination, the thing professional sport, Macfarlane argues, today sorely lacks--so much so that now he'll as soon profess to loathe sports as to love them. In On Sports, the latest in the Field Notes series, journalist David Macfarlane considers the origins of his love of sport against his discomfort with their commodification. From the pirates, gangsters, and extortionist hooligans of the International Olympic Committee, to the National Hockey League's capitulation to online gambling, to the ballooning of salaries and dumbed-down spectacle that characterize professional competition, to his enduring affection for athletic competition and the athletes who continue to dazzle in spite of it all, Macfarlane asks what sports really are, what it is that we love about them, and what, exactly, they have become.
