Unprotected the Final Round
After being involved in the fight game for over fifty years, it was the perfect time to write a book number two, aimed at educating young athletes about the dos and don'ts of any sport, whether it's boxing or baseball, particularly when entering the professional ranks. I've witnessed too many professional athletes earn millions of dollars, only to end up completely broke, often before their careers have even come to a close. In today's world of sports and business, it's crucial to be informed about many details that you won't learn in traditional higher education. The industry is filled with individuals seeking to exploit young athletes, particularly in terms of finances and career management; this has been a persistent reality in boxing since the sport's inception. "Unprotected" will provide you with the insights and knowledge needed to navigate your career in a way that safeguards your future and educates you, preventing you from becoming just another athlete who makes headlines for going broke. I wish you all the best as you read this book, and I hope you find success and fulfillment in whatever path you choose in life. -- Alan Santana

Iaido Sword
A comprehensive guide to the Japanese sword art of iaidoThrough the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries, Eastern martial arts-from karate to taekwondo to aikido-have grown dramatically in popularity in the West. Perhaps no other school has the solemn intensity of iaido, the powerful Japanese sword art. Iaido trains disciples above all to attain the state of being present. In his now re-released, fully illustrated Iaido Sword, author Richard Babin, M.D. provides an in-depth, practical guide to the legendary art-in particular, its Muso Shinden Ryu school-for novices and experienced martial artists alike. Babin begins with an exploration of iaido's history and lineage, from its founding in feudal Japan by Hayashizaki Jinsuke Shigenobu (1546-1621) and its origins in the sword arts of kenjutsu and iaijutsu to its more recent innovations following the Meiji Restoration. He proceeds to a detailed description of the practice, covering its etiquette and uniforms, materials, techniques and positions, safety concerns, and much else of the art's kata, or form. While the physical practice of martial arts is generally best learned through hands-on practice and the aid of an experienced instructor, Babin's manual provides an essential reference work for practitioners to consult as they develop their practice. As Babin makes clear, iaido's aims are not merely skill with a katana; within the martial art is a philosophy of discipline, self-defense, and courage that renders its training a means to a focused life. This book is also available from Echo Point Books as a hardcover (ISBN 1648374506).

Forging the Triple Crown
Horse racing's Triple Crown, much like the World Series, Indianapolis 500, and the Super Bowl, stands as one of the pinnacle achievements of American sports. Its iconic status emerged from the interweaving of three distinct races held across different states--a feat that reflects decades of human effort and equine prowess. While track operators, racing writers, owners, and trainers all contributed to this evolutionary process, it is the Thoroughbred horses that are the central figures of the event. This book traces the history of the Triple Crown, following the Thoroughbreds from their early days as juveniles and through their three-year-old season, culminating with their later accomplishments as older horses. By examining the challenges faced by each generation of foals, it reveals how the races captured the public's attention and over time morphed into massive events. The intertwined narratives of human contributions and equine accomplishments between 1918 and 1948 illuminate the remarkable evolution of horse racing.

Does the Intramural Sports Program at the United States Air Force Academy Build Character?
The use of sports to develop young men and women both physically and mentally has been a tradition in the United States for over one hundred years. It is seen as an excellent tool for developing self-confidence, building social skills, and developing character in its participants.1 But to a large extent, verifying these expectations, specifically the assumption that sports build character has been overlooked. If asked, a majority of people would most likely say that it is a fact-"sports build character."2 But is participation in sports really an effective mechanism for character development? Lately many researchers, to include Jennifer Beller, Sharon Stoll, Patricia Giebink, and Thomas McKenzie among others, have conducted a number of studies to determine if participation in sports, and specifically team sports, actually does develop character-and they see it differently. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it.
