Musings began May 11th, 2016 on my personal Facebook page. Intended as simple writing exercises, they fast became popular open windows and doors to what came and went in my day. You might call this a diary, but that wouldn't define musings properly. You might consider this a "note to self" as well. But that too, would fall short of what started in May of 2016.Musings are a still frame to the truth of my daily life. The truth is our shared truth. We are so much more alike than we are different. The truth is my days aren't more important or impressive than any other's day becomes. We all have our preferred building blocks to create our lifestyle. The truth is our days are magical and full of sparks of light and laughter. Our lives are our personal sparkler and we should run through time with it firing off sparks of inspiration to everyone who takes the time to look. We are all a light that was meant to be shared.Putting together Volume 2 reminded me just how much things change, but stay the same. I forgot a few things from 2017 and had to laugh at how all that had worked out in 2018. Which is a good thing to remember these days. As seniors we often get bogged down dealing with endless medical appointments (that often get cancelled), technology and...being ignored!I had my sixty-ninth birthday in the middle of the pandemic. To celebrate (the birthday, not the pandemic), I put together sixty-nine stories. These stories grew out of my ability to laugh at the annoying "senior" things in my life. I realize that I can't go back to the period before computers were $*?&!! invented, but I use my many years as a stand up comedian to laugh through it all.Excerpt from I'm Fine: A Bathroom Book for Seniors by Susan Carter: I asked the "get out" guy who was hanging out with the other workers that were smoking and eating snacks if this was the anti-terrorism plan. They laughed and joked "pretty much!" This year, the city of Edmonton reported that they had spent two point two million dollars on a terrorism plan. Unfortunately, the Bus Depot didn't get a photo copy of the plan. Perhaps some of the two point two million could have been spent on a bull horn to order passengers around, pay someone to check on the comfort of the passengers, or provide a couple of folding chairs for said passengers. Money could be spent to arrange with the Pub for shelter, or at least buy a tarp to protect us from the weather. When I finally got on the bus, the girl selling (she could have given them for our inconvenience) headphones for the movie was surprised to think that I might want a free drink. The really funny part was the movie - Clear and Present Danger! To end on a positive note; the bus driver that afternoon did apologize to us for the delay.
From Where I Sit
From Where I Sit is a collection of the inane thoughts (those are the polite words) rumbling around in the tequila-soaked brain cells of Bob Rockwell, an old curmudgeon fighting a losing battle with the absurdity and the ridiculousness of everyday life. He rants about the stuff that pisses him off (and that's a lot of stuff), he teases society's morons especially what he calls pretentious assholes (his word, not mine), he maligns those that annoy him, but he is quick to pay tribute to his heroes. He says he writes to consume space on his hard drive but his clever wit is sure to make you chuckle (maybe even giggle) and experience a number of profound ah-ha moments.
Alone In The Dark
Alone in the Dark was how I wrote all of these stories. I won't tell you that I was in my pajamas and drinking beer in the early hours of the morning, because you'd think even less of me. The hardest part of writing is that I become so engrossed in the story I'm trying to tell that I let my beer get warm and go flat. I can't even begin to count all of the beer I've wasted. I've got to develop a type - type - type - swig - type - type - type - swig writing technique. In the meantime here's what I've warmed my beer over during the past five years.
