Barry Scrapyard in the Late 1970s and Early 1980s
Growing up in north-west London in the 1950s and living alongside a busy freight line, the seed for steam fascination was firmly planted in a young Geoff's head. Later in life he was able to visit Barry Scrapyard and recorded the locos seen over a seven-year period from 1977 to 1983. He then went back in the early 1990s to photograph every last remaining locomotive. Those holiday stop-offs at that famous scrapyard created a photographic record of a unique place, now long-gone.

Michigan Railway Company: The Northern and Southern Divisions, the first comprehensive history of the Michigan United Railway Company, traces the rise and fall of Michigan's most significant electric railway. This volume covers the company's founding in local rail-based public transportation systems in Lansing, Jackson, Battle Creek, Kalamazoo, and Owosso-Corunna and ends with its eventual demise, abandoned prior to the stock market crash of 1929. Norman L. Krentel follows the fragments of lines in lower Michigan, which came together to form the MUR. He examines the interurban lines, which were broken down into five divisions, each with a separate superintendent. These divisions were Northern and Southern, which had formerly been Michigan United Railways; Northwestern, which had been Grand Rapids, Holland, and Chicago Railway; Western; and Northeastern. This also explores how electric railway history is intertwined with the state of Michigan. The interurban electric rail system supported automobile manufacturing, allowing for the shipment of parts supplies, and finished automobiles through Michigan, Indiana, Ohio, and Kentucky. Major auto plants like REO and Oldsmobile had rail sidetracks served by Michigan Railway's interurban freight trains. Electric railway history is thus an essential, previously overlooked factor in Michigan's industrial development.

Despite lasting just short of fourteen years, WC packed a lot of changes and development into that time and repeatedly shook up the industry.We look at this colorful operation in all seasons and across the territory it served. WC employed a wide variety of second-hand locomotives, and they are depicted working a range of tasks around the system. The classy maroon and gold livery of WC is fondly remembered. London's Underground Since 1985
JIM BLAKE's second volume of his photographs featuring the London Underground cover the period from 1985, shortly after the Thatcher regime's destruction of London Transport and its re-birth as London Underground Ltd., to 2021 when the Northern Line gained its new branch from Kennington to Battersea Power Station.This was a turbulent time in the system's history, encompassing the withdrawal of the last pre-war passenger rolling stock (in 1988) and then the abolition of two-person operated trains at the beginning of 2000.With the exception of the Waterloo & City Line, which was transferred from British Rail to London Underground in the 1990s, all Underground lines are covered together with the rolling stock operating them.Jim's photographs concentrate on the older types. What is very striking in them is how the system seemed to be going downhill rapidly during the Thatcher years when this survey begins - plagued by the curse of graffiti and liberally littered thanks to cuts in staff who once dealt with such problems. Fortunately, since Transport for London's takeover of the Underground from 2000 onwards, things in that respect have markedly improved, trains and stations are much cleaner and therefore welcoming to passengers.The contrast between the late 1980s/early 1990s and today's Underground is very clear in Jim's photographs featured here, most previously unpublished. It is unfortunate that further improvements, not to mention long-planned extensions to the system, continue to be frustrated by government spending restrictions at the time of writing.

Scania 112 & 142: At Work
In the eight years from 1980 when Scania introduced the 2-series trucks covered in Patrick Dyer's new book, they produced no less than 135,311 units. For much of that time the 142 held the title of the most powerful production truck in Europe. Why was this range so successful? One reason was that the Scania's advanced modular manufacturing system allowed it to cover weight categories from 16 to 174 tons without any special types.
