Gastrointestinal Parasites

Ingram 出版
2024/10/31 出版

A prospective epidemiological survey of intestinal parasitism was carried out in the Pediatrics and Children's Surgery departments of the El Idrissi Regional Hospital in K矇nitra (Gharb) among 300 hospitalized children. The survey identified 11 intestinal parasites: Entamoeba coli, Entamoeba histolytica/dispar, Endolimax nana, Giardia intestinalis, Iodamoeba butchilii, Blastocystis hominis, Ascaris lumbricoides, Trichuris trichuira, Enterobius vermicularis, Taenia saginata and Hymenolepis nana. Of the 300 children, 157 had at least one intestinal parasite (52.7%), with 91 cases of polyparasitism (30.3%). Among the intestinal parasites identified, oxyurosis is the first dominant intestinal parasitosis. The survey revealed that the age group most exposed to intestinal parasites is between one and nine years of age. Deteriorating hygienic and environmental conditions have increased rates of intestinal parasites in children living in rural areas. Most of the parasites identified are the result of poor hygiene, which means that those who carry them are at risk.

Understanding the Nature‒nurture Debate

Ingram 出版
2024/10/31 出版

There are arguably few areas of science more fiercely contested than the question of what makes us who we are. Are we products of our environments or our genes? Is nature the governing force behind our behaviour or is it nurture? While it is now widely agreed that it is a mixture of both, discussions continue as to which is the dominant influence. This unique volume presents a clear explanation of heritability, the ongoing nature versus nurture debate and the evidence that is currently available. Starting at the beginning of the modern nature-nurture debate, with Darwin and Galton, this book describes how evolution posed a challenge to humanity by demonstrating that humans are animals, and how modern social science was necessitated when humans became an object of natural science. It clearly sets out the most common misconceptions such as the idea that heritability means that a trait is 'genetic' or that it is a justification for eugenics.

Artificial Intelligence and Biotechnology

Faezeh,Kaedi  著
Ingram 出版
2024/10/30 出版

Artificial Intelligence, which is also known as AI today, is a new way to make smart tools by modeling human intelligence. A tool that thinks like a human and makes decisions for him. This technology is the same machine programmed by human hands, which is designed with the aim of making everyday tasks easier. Many people think of artificial intelligence as a robot that can be seen physically. In most cases, this concept is presented in the form of a response to human behavior and derived from his interests and tendencies. Artificial intelligence (AI) is a broad branch of computer science and is considered one of the interdisciplinary sciences. This concept means a machine that thinks like a human and has the ability to imitate human behavior. Such a machine can perform tasks that require human intelligence. Biotech companies are now using AI/ML solutions to develop autonomous robots that perform critical agricultural tasks such as harvesting crops at a much faster rate than humans. Computer Vision and DL algorithms are used to process and analyze data captured by UAVs.

Aroma Compound Evolution during Fermentation

Ingram 出版
2024/10/30 出版

The bacteria, yeast and fungi involved in the fermentation of foods play a significant role in shaping the aroma profile of the final product. Starting materials consist of many precursor molecules that can be transformed into aroma-active compounds through microbial activity, thereby contributing towards a more desired product. By monitoring the timing, mechanisms, and reasons for the release of these compounds, we can work towards achieving a more consistent aroma profile within fermentations, which still remains one of the biggest challenges for producers. This Special Issue contains studies in this field of aroma compound evolution, further advancing our understanding of this topic.

Teaching Plant and Animal Anatomy

Faezeh,Kaedi  著
Ingram 出版
2024/10/30 出版

Humans have long been interested in discovering the surrounding nature and its creatures, and human curiosity in knowing life led to the birth of the science of biology. Biology refers to the knowledge and study of all living organisms. This dynamic science deals with the origin of living things, their growth and development, and the interaction of living things with other living things and their surroundings. Throughout history, many scientists have dedicated their lives to better understanding the functioning of living organisms and how they relate to each other and the environment. Biology is the study of all living things, including this insect and the plant it sits on. As the name of biology suggests, biology deals with the study of living organisms or organisms that were once alive. The word biology is derived from two Greek words "bios" (meaning life) and "logos" (meaning study). In general, biologists study the structure, function, growth, origin, evolution, and distribution of living organisms.

Interaction between Sugarcane and Environmental Stressors

San-Ji,Gao  著
Ingram 出版
2024/10/30 出版

Increased crop vulnerability to a wide range of abiotic and biotic stresses can have a marked influence on the productivity of major crops, especially sugarcane (Saccharum spp.), thereby counteracting the potential to achieve the goal of "ZERO HUNGER" proposed by the FAO-UN. To cope with various stresses, plants have evolved complex rapid responses, but crop efficiency is still severely hampered. The prevailing alarming climate change scenario and future changing weather provide challenges for researchers to better understand plant responses, such as the activation of different signal cascades, followed by signal transduction, and triggering the respective gene expression in response to single or combined biotic or abiotic stresses, thus ultimately balancing the trade-off between plant growth and defense.Over the past decade, significant progress has been made in crops, including sugarcane, in deciphering the roles of biomarker genes and signaling pathways that are involved in biotic and abiotic stress responses at physiological, biochemical, and molecular levels. Therefore, this reprint will highlight the recent advances made in the utilization of different conventional and modern biotechnological strategies to better understand stress adaptation and tolerance mechanisms in sugarcanes.

The Role of Toll-Like Receptors (TLRs) in Infection and Inflammation 2.0

Ingram 出版
2024/10/30 出版

This Special Issue 2.0 continues the conceptional line started in the previous Special Issue, focusing on the involvement of Toll-like receptors (TLRs) and their related signaling pathways in viral infection and inflammation, and emphasizing the therapeutic potential of TLR system modulation for the treatment of acute viral infections and their long-term sequelae and to provide potential targets for treating chronic viral and inflammatory diseases. This Special Issue provides an excellent collection of contemporary reviews and research articles covering a broad variety of topics, ranging from the protective activity of TLRs in viral infections to detrimental disturbances of the host immune system. The most intriguing theme discussed in this second Special Issue is the intercorrelation between acute viral infections and triggered delayed effects, including neuroinflammatory and neurodegenerative long-term sequelae. Notably, new data increasingly show that neurological pathways, such as neurogenesis, neuroinflammation, and cognitive and behavioural aspects, may be influenced by innate, TLR-mediated pathways. In this context, the connection between infection-triggered acute disbalance in TLR activation and resulting neurological sequelae following bacterial (sepsis) or viral infections, including long COVID-associated neurological sequelae, may provide new targets for future treatment options.

Plant Biostimulants in Sustainable Horticulture and Agriculture

Ingram 出版
2024/10/30 出版

There is a growing need for food production through sustainable cultivation practices, without reducing crop yield and producer income, due to increased environmental pollution and the gradual degradation of cultivated soils. Various compounds with bioactive properties can be utilized as biostimulants to boost plant growth and development under normal and stressful conditions. So far, six distinct categories of biostimulants have been recognized, including the following: microbial inoculants; humic substances, such as humic and fulvic acids; protein hydrolysates and amino acids; biopolymers; inorganic compounds; and seaweed extracts. All of the above are commercially available and have wide agricultural applications. The most important biostimulant effects on crops are the acceleration of crop establishment, improvements in nutrient uptake, nutrient use efficiency, seed germination, root development, crop performance, and visual quality of the final products, the induction of tolerance to biotic and abiotic stressors, the increase in perishable products' shelf life, nutrient leaching reduction, the removal of heavy metals from contaminated soils, the stimulation of the plant immune system, and the induction of plant defensive biomolecules' biosynthesis. Different classification approaches have been suggested so far, based on either the origin of each biostimulant, such as biological vs. non-biological and microbial vs. non-microbial, or the mode of action, dividing biostimulants into phytohormonal and non-phytohormonal ones.

Molecular Targets of Oxidative Stress

Marcel,Bonay  著
Ingram 出版
2024/10/30 出版

Oxidative stress, known to increase the risk of multiple metabolic and chronic disorders or cancer development, is defined as an imbalance between the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and the capacity of antioxidants to counteract the deleterious effects of oxidants. To regulate the oxidation/reduction (redox) balance, numerous antioxidant enzymes and nonenzymatic antioxidants exist. Free radicals activate transcription factors to promote antioxidant production and mitochondrial biogenesis. One of these transcription factors, nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2), is a master regulator of antioxidant and anti-inflammatory responses. Indeed, Nrf2 contributes to redox balance by initiating the transcription of hundreds of genes involved in antioxidant and cytoprotective responses. A better understanding of the molecular targets of oxidative stress and their interaction with the Nrf2 signaling pathway would strengthen the relevance of their preventive or therapeutic use in health and diseases. Most of the studies presented in this Special Issue were dedicated to multiple metabolic and chronic disorders or cancer development. They contribute to improving our understanding of the molecular targets of oxidative stress and their interaction with the Nrf2 signaling pathway in some oxidative-stress-related diseases.

Exosomes in Cancers Therapy

Farrukh,Aqil  著
Ingram 出版
2024/10/30 出版

In recent years, small extracellular vesicles (EVs), particularly exosomes, have emerged as new delivery vehicles in cancer treatment. These 30-150 nm vesicles play a critical role in cellular communication and also offer a new approach to drug delivery. Exosomes carry proteins, lipids, and nucleic acids, and their unique ability to naturally facilitate intercellular communication is opening up new possibilities for targeted drug delivery and immunotherapy in cancer treatment. While cancer-derived exosomes can contribute to tumor growth and metastasis, this same mechanism can be repurposed as a powerful therapeutic tool. Researchers are exploring their use as biomarkers for diagnosis and prognosis, as well as nano-carriers for delivering small molecules and biologics. Their ability to stabilize drugs, cross biological barriers such as the blood-brain barrier, and low toxicity make them especially attractive for therapeutic applications. This collection of articles focuses on the evolving role of exosomes in cancer therapy, highlighting their benefits and the problems with bringing them into clinical practice. Given the challenges in scaling up cell-derived exosomes for common use, bovine milk and colostrum have emerged as promising and abundant sources for exosome-based drug delivery systems. With their high exosome yield and established safety, milk-derived exosomes could become vital to the future of cancer treatment. The Special Issue also contains articles with preclinical and clinical studies, examining the potential of exosome-based platforms for the oral delivery of cancer drugs and biologics.

Efficacy of essential oils in controlling Rhizopus stolonifer on grapes

Ingram 出版
2024/10/28 出版

The Isabel grape is one of the main varieties of Vitis labrusca, which has an accelerated reduction in post-harvest quality, due to weight loss due to softening of the tissues, darkening of the skin and the occurrence of off-flavors resulting from the senescence process, as well as sensitivity to dehydration and fungal infection during handling and processing, limiting commercialization. The control of post-harvest fungal diseases is carried out using synthetic fungicides. These chemical compounds have been withdrawn from the market due to possible toxicological risks. Due to the negative impact of these fungicides, the search for effective alternative methods in the control and development of phytopathogens has stimulated research into the use of essential oils for application to food. In this context, the present study evaluated the efficacy of applying the essential oils of Origanum vulgare L. (OV) and Rosmarinus officinalis L. (RO) alone and in combination, as inhibitors on the post-harvest fungus Rizhopus stolonifer "in vitro", the influence on the autochthonous microbiota of Isabel grapes (Vitis labrusca L.), and the physical and physicochemical characteristics of the fruit.

Hif-1 as a Potential Drug Target for Solid Tumors

Ingram 出版
2024/10/23 出版

Hypoxia is a typical microenvironmental characteristic of many solid tumors. HIF-1 is the key regulator of growing tumor's response to hypoxia. HIF-1α subunit levels rise in hypoxic environments, when oncogenes are activated, and/or when tumor suppressor genes are inactivated, this is necessary for HIF-1 function in tumors. HIF-1 turns on genes that enable cells of a solid tumor to flourish in the noxious hypoxic tumor environment via attainment of numerous cancer hallmarks. This book elaborates the regulation and role of HIF-1 in oncogenic signalling. Further, its potential as a drug target for solid tumors is also discussed. The book will be useful as a reference book for students of graduate and post-graduate level courses in Life Science, Biomedical Science as well as to those who have a special interest in Cancer Biology.

Bioremediation of cadmium under laboratory conditions

Kezia,Balena  著
Ingram 出版
2024/10/22 出版

Unlike organic pollutants, heavy metals cannot be chemically degraded. Therefore, chemical and physical remediation processes are used to remove them before they are discharged into water bodies. Most of these processes are effective, but they can be economically unviable or make the problem worse, as large quantities of chemical reagents may be needed. The addition of chemical reagents can remove the metal, but creates a new problem with the disposal of the chemicals. Bioremediation, using microorganisms as biosorbent material, has been successfully applied in several cases. Yeast cells can accumulate metal ions on the cell surface through the process of adsorption, which is a passive process, or actively absorb the metal, which is accumulated inside the cell. In this work, various biological, physiological and chemical parameters were studied, which are important for selecting yeasts that can be used to capture cadmium from aqueous media.
