The institutionalization of modern malaria control

Ingram 出版
2024/07/04 出版

This book seeks to capture the dynamics of the institutionalization of modern malaria control in the Centre-Cameroon region. In other words, it aims to give an account of the process by which modern malaria control was progressively and gradually established from the arrival of the French colonizer in 1919. To achieve this objective, the book uses a methodological approach based on neo-institutionalism in its three variants: historical, sociological and rational choice. It also draws on data collection and processing techniques. The result is that the modern fight against malaria in the Centre-Cameroon region is being institutionalized through sequences of actions which, however, are subject to numerous tribulations that make their effects on the social field ambivalent. In the end, it shows that, despite these multiple tribulations, modern malaria control can be improved in the geographical area of the Centre.

Ethanol fermentation

Ingram 出版
2024/07/04 出版

In recent years, the importance attached to biofuels has increased dramatically around the world, due to the advance of global warming and the rise in oil prices. The production of conventional biofuels, however, faces obstacles in reaching the desired levels, which is a strong incentive to adopt new technologies. The Brazilian sugar-alcohol sector has aroused the interest of several countries due to the high yield and low cost of sugar and alcohol production, with sugar cane being the raw material used in this sector. Ethanol is an estimated source of clean, renewable energy and is the most widely used biofuel in the world, both in pure form and as an additive to gasoline. During the industrial production of ethanol, one of the limiting factors in the process is the stress caused to yeasts, mainly by the high concentrations of sugar and ethanol present in the must. In this study, using different approaches, we sought to increase the tolerance of the industrial yeast CAT-1 to withstand the stress factors encountered in the Brazilian industrial process.

Xerophytic enhancement

Ingram 出版
2024/07/04 出版

Xerophyte species are currently coveted for their wealth of secondary metabolites with interesting biological activities. The aim of this work was to explore the phenolic compound contents and investigate some biological activities (antioxidant and antimicrobial) of two xerophytes Asphodelus tenuifolius and Ononis natrix. The main results showed a significant difference in phenolic compound content and biological activity depending on the polarity of the solvents used and the species in question. Indeed, the apolar fraction of Ononis natrix is characterized by its richness in phenolic compounds (total polyphenols and flavonoids) concomitant with high antioxidant activity. What's more, the apolar fractions of both species have the best antimicrobial capacities. These results demonstrate the importance of species and extraction solvent in determining biological potential. This study also highlights the value of xerophytes as a source of bioactive molecules.

Changes in vegetation cover and habitat deterioration

Ingram 出版
2024/07/03 出版

The White-throated Babbler (Kupeornis gilberti) is classified as one of the world's least studied "endangered" avian species. It is endemic to the Bakossi National Park (PNB), where it faces threats such as agriculture and habitat degradation. The lack of information on this species drew our attention to the rate of change of its habitat as well as the factors influencing its probability of occurrence due to these threats. The growth of plantations and deforestation are causing the conversion of forest cover to agriculture and the loss of wildlife habitat. To mitigate the threats responsible for the loss of White-throated Babbler habitat, we propose: delimitation of the GNP, intensification of patrols and encouragement of perennial agriculture.

The Nutritional and Medicinal Value of Breeding Black Rice

Ingram 出版
2024/06/30 出版

Black rice is one of several colored rice varieties, including purple, red, pink, blue, brown, and yellow, often referred to as miracle rice due to its high nutritional value compared to white rice. The bran of black rice is particularly rich in protein, lipids, fiber, vitamins, and minerals. Major vitamins found in black rice bran include vitamin E and B-vitamins, while its mineral composition primarily consists of phosphorus, potassium, magnesium, calcium, iron, zinc, and manganese. The dark color of black rice is attributed to its high anthocyanin content, which serves as antioxidants, helping to combat free radicals. In our research, we focus on breeding new rice varieties with enhanced nutrition by developing double haploid lines derived from black rice using anther culture technique. Additionally, we study the inheritance of agronomic and yield traits and utilize DNA markers to produce lines with high nutritional value, serving as a source of natural antioxidants and anticarcinogens. Our goal is to enhance both the nutritional and medicinal value of rice-based diets.

Differences in the Blood Cell Composition between two Ecotypes of Astyanax Mexicanus (Characid)

Ingram 出版
2024/06/27 出版

Bachelor Thesis from the year 2024 in the subject Biology - Evolution, grade: 1,7, University of M羹nster (Institute for Evolution & Biodiversity), language: English, abstract: The characid Astyanax mexicanus is a coveted model organism for evolutionary ecology development and medical research. Perpetual darkness, low nutrition availability and low-oxygenized waters characterize the cave environment. That puts selective pressure on the cave-dwelling form towards extensive morphological and physiological adaptations, while still being able to generate fertile offsprings with the surface form. Under low parasite abundance, wild forms of Astyanax mexicanus cavefish shifted their immune systems strategy towards a more sensitive adapted immune response compared to the surface form. In this thesis, the blood cell composition between the cave-dwelling and the surface-dwelling form is analyzed. On top, the erythrocyte size between these ecotypes is compared. Blood smears from lab-raised individuals of the Pach籀n-cave ecotype (N=9) and the surface ecotype (N=9) were stained following the Pappenheim method. Light microscopy was used for generating images, which were analyzed with a trained deep-learning AI-model by Biodock.

The Role of FFR and Signal-to-Noise Ratio in Pitch Perception Research

Sita  著
Ingram 出版
2024/06/26 出版

Pitch perception, the ability to distinguish between different musical tones, is a fundamental aspect of human hearing. Researchers are increasingly utilizing the Frequency Following Response (FFR) to gain insights into this complex process. The FFR is a brainwave that reflects the brain's synchronization with the frequency of an auditory stimulus. By measuring the FFR, scientists can assess how faithfully the brain represents pitch information. However, a critical factor influencing FFR measurements is the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). SNR refers to the strength of the desired signal (the sound of interest) relative to the background noise. Low SNR, where noise dominates the signal, can significantly distort the FFR, making it difficult to interpret pitch processing accurately. Therefore, researchers employ various techniques to enhance SNR during FFR experiments. These techniques may involve filtering out background noise, using specialized recording equipment, or presenting stimuli in controlled environments. By optimizing SNR, scientists can obtain clearer FFR measurements, leading to a more precise understanding of pitch perception. This knowledge can have significant implications for various fields, including music cognition, audiology, and the development of hearing aids.

Oxidative and nitrosative stress

Ingram 出版
2024/06/26 出版

Oxidative/nitrosative stress plays a major role in the pathogenesis of certain diseases. Understanding its effects enables us to envisage preventive and curative treatments. The biological effects of oxidative/nitrosative stress were assessed on the Tetrahymena thermophila cell model. The results highlighted certain aspects of disturbance to cell growth, morphology and physiology. In addition, purification and characterization of T. thermophila glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase elucidated metabolic perturbations in vivo and in vitro. In addition, the protective potential of certain essential oils was evaluated on the growth of T. thermophila under stress. The results showed that most of the oils tested had an anti-stress effect. These oils act differently depending on the type of stress and the plant from which they are extracted. Furthermore, the synergistic interaction of the essential oils does not appear to be selective with regard to the type of stress; it significantly and indifferently reduces the effects of oxidative and nitrosative stress, particularly during the exponential growth phase.

On the Origin of Being

Luke,Comer  著
Ingram 出版
2024/06/24 出版

For greater well-being, we must adapt our modern lifestyle and live more in harmony with our natural and evolutionary selves. While giving many benefits, aspects of modern society can also be harmful to our physical, mental, and cultural health. We can overcome many of these detriments if we better understand and express our primal self, which is largely encoded into our DNA.On the Origin of Being outlines the misalignments between our genetic design and modern lifestyle that reduce our well-being and even cause disease. Jenny Powers, PhD in immunology, and Luke Comer, author and producer, pay homage to Charles Darwin by investigating the evolution of many human behaviors. They identify the origins of these behaviors in the single-cell organisms of billions of years ago and then trace them through primates, hominoids, and up the evolutionary chain to modern humans. They then demonstrate how to realign our behaviors to enjoy more vital, loving, and robust lives here and now.Book one of this three-part series addresses four behaviors that are most significant to our health: sleep, nutrition, work and rest, and our relationship with nature.

Enhancing the Production of Isoflavones from Transformed Cultures

Ingram 出版
2024/06/24 出版

Medicinal plants constitute an important natural wealth of a country.Herbs are very important components of medicine. India is also the richest sources of medicinal plants because of its rich geographical diversity, varied climatic and ecological features and is appropriately called the botanical garden of the world. Medicinal plants are valued for their secondary metabolites such as alkaloids, steroids, flavanoids, terpenes, glycosides etc. Medicinal plants are the most exclusive source of life saving drugs for the majority of the world's population. Hairy root cultures are easy to maintain and are characterised by high growth rate, fast doubling time and are able to synthesise root derived secondary metabolites.Hairy roots are unique in their genetic and biosynthetic stability and they are able to synthesise a large group of chemical compounds. These roots can also synthesize more than a single metabolite and therefore prove economical for commercial production purposes. The greatest advantage of hairy root cultures is that they often exhibit about the same or greater biosynthetic capacity for secondary metabolite production compared to their mother plants.

In vitro experiments have revealed that CDH17 forms homophilic trans- and cis- complexes in a calcium-dependent manner44,72,87-89. A CDH17 inhibitory peptide, designed based on expected structural similarities to classical cadherins, interfered with homophilic trans adhesion in CACO2 cells forming epithelial layers and resulted in interstitial cleft widening72. Experiments also revealed that CDH17 is capable of forming heterophilic trans interactions with the classical cadherin CDH1, which is expressed in the same cell types as CDH1744. However, a structural basis for how CDH16 and CDH17 interact in cis and trans to mediate homophilic and heterophilic adhesion is not known.

Computer Model of Speckle Interference Patterns of Bioobjects

Ingram 出版
2024/06/21 出版

In the current phase of advancement in light scattering optics, it can be asserted that the overarching theory of scattering is presently in a satisfactory, though incomplete, condition. However, specific experimental techniques, particularly the requisite measuring apparatus, remain underdeveloped. This circumstance underscores pertinent scientific foundational objectives, notably the meticulous examination of scattering phenomena in tangible entities through mathematical models or direct measurement of matter's optical parameters based on established principles. Nevertheless, these patterns were disregarded in conventional measurement techniques. Consequently, addressing this issue could substantially enhance measurement precision and the reliability of biological object control and diagnostic outcomes. The dissertation scrutinizes existing approximate techniques for computer-simulated scattering, which are rapid and straightforward, yet lack clearly defined applicability boundaries, alongside experimental investigations and the analysis of experimental data from a laboratory setup to assess biological micro-object parameters.Key words: Laser radiation, blood, speckle fields.

Beyond the Basics

Williams  著
Ingram 出版
2024/06/15 出版

This title expands on the idea of protein-protein interactions (PPIs) being more than just a static concept. Here's a breakdown: - "Beyond the Blueprint" This suggests that understanding protein structure (the blueprint) is not enough, and protein interactions are key to cellular function. - "Unveiling the Dynamic Dance of Protein Interactions" This creates a vivid image of PPIs being a constantly changing and crucial process within the cell. We can delve deeper by highlighting the dynamic nature of PPIs: - Specificity in Motion: Proteins have specific "binding sites" that determine their interaction partners. These interactions are constantly forming and breaking, allowing for precise cellular responses. - Orchestrating Complexity: PPIs create a complex network within the cell, turning processes on and off based on changing signals. This dynamic dance allows for adaptation and regulation within a living organism. - Beyond Static Images: Studying PPIs in action goes beyond static protein structures. It allows scientists to understand how proteins work together in real-time, leading to new discoveries. This title effectively positions the exploration of PPIs as a journey beyond the basic building blocks of life. It emphasizes the dynamic nature of these interactions and their crucial role in orchestrating cellular functions.

Unraveling the Mechanics of Cavitation

Nimra  著
Ingram 出版
2024/06/14 出版

In this book, we present numerical and data-driven methods for the modeling of multiphase physics involving cavitating bubble dynamics in and near elastic and viscoelastic materials. In the first part, we make use of data assimilation with bubbles cavitating in a viscoelastic hydrogel to estimate its mechanical properties. This method to characterize soft materials can aid in the modeling of biomaterials in settings where high strain rates occur. In the second part, we implement a numerical framework for the direct numerical simulation of acoustic wave-bubble- stone interactions. This is used to simulate burst-wave lithotripsy, a treatment to break kidney stones through exposure to repeated bursts of focused ultrasound. In particular, this framework enables a better understanding of the impact and dynamics of bubbles that can form near the stone during treatment.

Reconciling the Debate

Nina  著
Ingram 出版

plasma membrane as a protective mechanism.29 In the heart, a high density of caveolae have been shown at the plasma membrane, increasing the surface area up to 2-fold.22,30,31,32 Indeed, disruption of caveolar biogenesis in cardiac muscles can lead to cell damage and compensatory hypertrophy.33 Caveolae exist as single pits with a characteristic omega-shaped structure at the cell surface,22 while association of multiple caveolae was proposed to contribute to T-tubules biogenesis in postnatal muscle cells5, or to multi-lobed caveolar structures called rosettes34. CAV3 knock-out in mice resulted in a complete loss of caveolae and decreased T-tubule density.35 It was proposed, that the actin cytoskeleton regulates the organization of caveolae such that actin polymerization increases caveolae abundance.36 Furthermore, the actin cytoskeleton was proposed to be involved in caveolae endocytosis and recycling.37,38 The association of caveolae with actin filaments was documented by electron microscopy in fibroblasts39, epithelial cells40 and muscle cells29.
