Insects and forensic detection

Ingram 出版
2024/06/21 出版

Forensic science continues to rely on important clues from the world of invertebrates. Below, you can find information on the types of insects used in forensic investigations and the reasons behind their use. Forensic scientists rely on a variety of insects for their detection work, with an emphasis on flies (Diptera) and beetles (Coleoptera). Flies lay larvae that consume cadaver organs and tissues. As the corpse dries out, beetles take over the decomposition process.Other invertebrates, including those in the soil; also colonize the area around the cadaver. Flies are crucial in forensic investigations, with Diptera species such as Calliphoridae (blow flies) being commonly involved. Blow flies are known for feeding on corpses and can arrive at the scene within minutes to hours of death. Examples of species include Chrysomya megacephala, Chrysomya rufifacies, Gaiijbhoria vicrna, and Lucilia sericata. Understanding the behavior and ecology of blow flies can aid in forensic detection. For instance, Lucilia illustris is typically found in bright, open habitats, while Phormia regina prefers shaded areas.

Saving Orchids

University 出版
2024/06/15 出版

A gorgeously illustrated ode to the beauty and significance of orchids--and to those fighting to save these unique plants across the globe. Until recently, a myriad of lifeforms enriched our lives. In some places, listening to a nighttime chorus of frogs in the neighborhood marsh was an archetypal touchstone of childhood. Children would search for tadpoles, just steps away from native Lady's Tresses orchids. Year by year, the chorus became quieter. Today, only a few frogs and orchids remain. Is this the world we want our children to inherit? Do we want orchids to slip through our fingers and, eventually, to vanish? For biologists Philip Seaton and Lawrence W. Zettler, and the intrepid orchid defenders they introduce in this book, the answer is no. Seaton and Zettler have traveled the world over the past three decades, studying orchids--flagship species for plant conservation. Stunningly illustrated, this book is a culmination of stories about the people--young and old alike--dedicated to protecting these remarkable plants from extinction. In the 19th century, collectors removed, shipped, and sold vast numbers of orchids from the wild. Today, scientists strive to reverse this harm--to protect and rebuild remnants of orchids' original habitats against human disruption, including climate change. Seaton and Zettler reveal these plants' bizarre pollination partners, risky liaisons with fungi, and adaptation to human domestication to show that learning orchids' scientific secrets--and finding human helpers--is key to these plants' survival.

Description and Management of Ornamental Trees for Use in Urban Areas

Ingram 出版
2024/06/13 出版

Ornamental plants for use in urban areas are considered essential for the implementation of parks, gardens and their use in sidewalks and backyards, however, it is important to consider their growth habit, appearance, shading capacity and visual appeal, as well as, in the case of their management, their resistance to drought and tolerance to high and low temperatures, their adaptation to certain types of soil. Care must be taken from its selection to its management for its use in landscaping, as well as its planting in squares, gardens and forests, that is to consider from the color of its leaves and its flowering capacity with the purpose of being attractive to passers-by. Nowadays, in big cities, care is taken from damage to drainage, wiring and collateral damage to pavements, so that this document is a guide to know in more detail the species considered and make good decisions when designing green areas in urban areas.

Honey bees and melon pollination

Ingram 出版
2024/06/13 出版

This book shares knowledge with farmers and beekeepers that will lead them to achieve maximum quality and yield of the melon crop. It explores factors whose control affects bee pollination, such as crop management, edaphic and nutritional considerations, and the control of weeds, pests and diseases that damage it; it also addresses issues on the pattern and quantity of pollen capture, the temporal and spatial distribution of bees during their collection visits, the number of hives per hectare for optimum pollination, and the grazing of wild plants that are alien to the melon plant. This scientific exercise also seeks to increase appreciation and respect for these hard-working insects by examining topics such as the hive disappearance syndrome, their community life, their internal communication, their food capture behavior in times of scarcity and the phenomenon of Africanization, factors that affect survival, availability and pollination efficiency.

Water and nitrogen levels in cocoa cultivation in semi-arid Bahia

Ingram 出版
2024/06/11 出版

The appearance of the witches' broom in 1989 in the municipality of Uru癟uca, right in the center of the cocoa region, in the south of Bahia, caused damage and discouragement among producers and caused production to fall from 400,000 tons in 1990 to 174,000 tons in 2003. Research into irrigated cocoa in the semi-arid region is beginning to develop, but it is still small in number and its results still need more detailed scientific evidence, especially with regard to the crop's field parameters, such as the most efficient water level and the most satisfactory nutrient dose, which will directly influence the cocoa tree's productivity, as well as other technical aspects that need to be diagnosed.

Agro-forestry systems for the recovery of degraded areas

Ingram 出版
2024/06/07 出版

The main objective of this work was to make a diagnosis of the agro-environmental situation in the villages of Calue, Cambongue, Lungongo and Cacaca, belonging to the municipality of Ca獺la, and to analyze the possibility of these farmers adopting and adapting Agro-Forestry Systems (SAF) as a way of recovering degraded areas. Agricultural practices were analyzed in the different types of ploughlands, i.e.: onaka (low ploughlands); ombanda (ploughlands located on the edges of the onaka); ongongos (high ploughlands) and in the otchumbo (backyard) and the impact of these practices on natural resources. The methodology used was surveys and semi-structured conversations. A total of 131 surveys were carried out (72 women and 59 men). The villages of Calue and Cambongue were our main object of study because they presented the worst picture in terms of deforestation, poor soil cover, the presence of ravines, and were in urgent need of a recovery plan. Most of the farmers surveyed in these villages, despite having different types of plough, choose to cultivate in the otchumbos, on the one hand because they are closer and make cultivation easier, and on the other hand because they benefit from the more fertile areas.

Ingram 出版
2024/06/07 出版

Until then, knowledge of the diversity of the Scenedesmaceae family in the state of S瓊o Paulo, Brazil, was relatively limited, including its geographical distribution. The current floristic survey of representatives of the family in the state of S瓊o Paulo is based on the study of 153 sampling units deposited in the State Scientific Herbarium of the Botanical Institute. Materials from 122 municipalities were examined and specimens of Scenedesmaceae were documented in 91 of them. A total of 73 Scenedesmaceae taxa were identified, distributed in 66 species (including 3 possible species new to science), 12 varieties that are not typical of their respective species and two new combinations. Of the 73 taxa identified, nine were cited for the first time for the state of S瓊o Paulo. At the same time, 22 taxa in the specialized literature were evaluated, which were not found in the samples studied, but presented a description, measurements and illustration of the material studied, i.e. sufficient conditions for their re-identification. Finally, 46 other taxa that had been wrongly identified and appear under different names in the literature were maintained.

Variability and Inheritance of Fruit Quality in Highbush Blueberries

Oana,Hera  著
Ingram 出版
2024/06/06 出版

In Romania, the genetic breeding of blueberries to obtain new, productive cultivars with large, aromatic fruits and plants resistant to winter frost remains a primary objective in research programs. The quality of fruits is determined by quality elements fixed in the genetic basis of each cultivar and how these are influenced by environmental conditions, applied cultivation technology, harvesting, transport, storage in temperature-controlled facilities, fruit packaging, and more. Apart from the commercial aspect, which is crucial for fruits intended for fresh consumption, important roles are played by taste and other characteristic features of the fruit (such as an average berry weight over 2.5 g, firm fruits, ripening in grouped bunches, color, aroma, consistency, etc.) and plants (including resistance/tolerance to specific diseases and suitability for mechanical harvesting).

Dark Botany

Ingram 出版
2024/06/05 出版

Dark Botany activates the material and sensorial wonder of plants-their energy, their mysterious allure, their capacities and skills, their independent might. In this Wunderkammer of critical plant studies essays and plant+artworks, the Herbarium emerges as a site of multiple materialities and reflexive forms of counter-narrative. Herbaria specimens come alive as assemblages, telling truths about their dark histories and darker contemporary currents, while reflecting on the complexity of texture, movement, memory, compound structure, chemical emissions and rapid evolution of plants and languages. What one discovers is that herbaria are not static: they are as vital, energetic and enigmatic as the plants in their collections-and as diverse. With contributions by Giovanni Aloi, Matthew Beach, Tamryn Bennett, Edward Colless, Prudence Gibson, Ryan Gordon, Lisa Gorton, Sigi J繹ttkandt, Nick Koenig, Verena Kuni, Anna M. IRAT 200 maize cultivation

Ingram 出版
2024/06/05 出版

With its diverse range of uses, maize is one of Madagascar's most important crops. However, maize yields among farmers are still low. Fertilization plays a key role in increasing plant yields. To this end, AGRIVET carried out an experiment on maize fertilization in the Vakinankaratra region, a maize-growing area. The aim of the study was to determine the effects of different fertilizers on maize. Different combinations and doses of fertilizers with covers were tested on IRAT 200 maize, a variety already adopted by farmers. Two types of phosphate fertilizer were used: TSP and calcite. For nitrogen (N), three different doses were applied: 0Kg/Ha N, 60Kg/Ha N and 120Kg/Ha N. Three cover doses were used: 0%, 30% and 60%.

Characterization of invasive marsh plants

Ingram 出版
2024/06/02 出版

Biological invasions are the second biggest source of ecosystem destruction. But knowledge of invasive taxa is still lacking in Burundi. To support invasive plant managers, a study was carried out in the marshes of the Ruvubu River, Burundi's largest river. The aim was to: Carry out a floristic inventory; highlight the diversity of invasive plants and determine a floristic gradient. The phytosociological method was used to establish floristic richness. The determination of invasive plants required a combination of the average cover rate and the biological characteristics of the invasive specific plasticity of the dominant species. The results showed 161 species in 125 genera and 54 families. 13 proven invasive species and seven other potential invasive plant species were retained, spread across six botanical families, two of which (Poaceae and Asteraceae) are the most represented. The floristic gradient of invasive plants increases from upstream to downstream.

Seeds and Tales

Ingram 出版
2024/05/31 出版

Seeds and Tales is a fine-art print photography initiative by Riccardo Riccio in collaboration with the Brazilian agro-ecological company Trov瓊o Tropical and the multilingual press Plataforma9. Over two years of expeditions throughout Brazil, the Seeds project collected over 300 species of unique seeds. Alongside seed guardians, it documented oral traditions regarding cultivation and management, spiritual and medicinal properties, and incredible stories associated with each seed. This research is compiled in the Seeds and Tales book-catalog, published by Plataforma9 in 2024.As opposed to translated, the Seeds and Tales book was written bilingually. The content was crafted with both English and Brazilian Portuguese in mind, not only to communicate to both audiences, but to bridge these two distinct literary cultures. On the one hand, we have the stylistic legacy of western biology texts; concise, observationally apt, and rigidly structured. On the other, we have the stylistic legacy of pre-colonial oral lore; ancestral tales, wisdom, and poetic symbolism.

Dive into the fascinating world of plant hormones with "The Master Molecule: Abscisic Acid and Plant Resilience in Water Stress." This book explores the critical role of abscisic acid (ABA), a signaling molecule plants produce in response to drought. Nicknamed the "stress hormone," ABA acts as a plant's internal defense system during water scarcity. You'll learn how ABA helps plants conserve water by regulating processes like stomatal closure, which minimizes water loss through leaves. "The Master Molecule" goes beyond just survival. It reveals how ABA strengthens plant resilience, allowing them to adapt and even thrive in dry conditions. The book explores the complex pathways ABA triggers within plants, promoting root growth and the production of protective compounds. This knowledge is especially valuable in our changing climate. By understanding ABA, scientists can develop strategies to breed crops more resistant to drought. "The Master Molecule" sheds light on this vital hormone, offering a glimpse into the remarkable world of plant adaptation.

Botany of Empire

University o 出版
2024/05/21 出版

An accessible foray into botany's origins and how we can transform its futureColonial ambitions spawned imperial attitudes, theories, and practices that remain entrenched within botany and across the life sciences. Banu Subramaniam draws on fields as disparate as queer studies, Indigenous studies, and the biological sciences to explore the labyrinthine history of how colonialism transformed rich and complex plant worlds into biological knowledge. Botany of Empire demonstrates how botany's foundational theories and practices were shaped and fortified in the aid of colonial rule and its extractive ambitions. We see how colonizers obliterated plant time's deep history to create a reductionist system that imposed a Latin-based naming system, drew on the imagined sex lives of European elites to explain plant sexuality, and discussed foreign plants like foreign humans. Subramanian then pivots to imagining a more inclusive and capacious field of botany untethered and decentered from its origins in histories of racism, slavery, and colonialism. This vision harnesses the power of feminist and scientific thought to chart a course for more socially just practices of experimental biology.A reckoning and a manifesto, Botany of Empire provides experts and general readers alike with a roadmap for transforming the colonial foundations of plant science.

Genetic Variability and Correlation Studies in Rabi Onion

Nagnath,Mane  著
Ingram 出版
2024/04/15 出版

Onion (Allium cepa L.) 2n=16. It is a highly cross-pollinated, biennial for seed production and annual for bulb production, belonging to family Alliaceae. Onion is one of the most important vegetables and grown worldwide under outdoor condition. It has become an important commercial crop because of its area, production and consumption. During the past few decades tremendous developments have contributed to the knowledge and understanding of various aspects of crop production and various literatures has been generated. To improve the bulb yield and quality through selection of better varieties, the information on the nature and magnitude of variability for yield and other characters present in the population owing to its genetic and non-genetic causes play an important role and as such it is a pre-requisite for any systematic breeding programme. The crop yield being complex in nature depends largely on its contributing characters and their interactions. Knowledge on association of these traits with yield will be more useful to plan the selection strategies for improving the yield. With going this book many ideas and problems are discussed to help out the students, research workers.

Studies on performance of garlic mutants

Ingram 出版
2024/04/13 出版

The improvement in garlic was attempted for higher yield, better quality and storability in India and world. For successful improvement in any crop the knowledge of its genetic nature is important. Garlic is a sterile diploid (2n=2x=16). Since it is a clonally propagated crop, less variability exists. In consequence garlic breeding has been limited to the selection through the pre-existing genetic variability and increase in garlic variability was attempted via mutation breeding and in-vitro techniques. So, it was important to induce variability through mutation. Various physical and chemical mutagens are used to induce mutations in plants. In all cases, an effective mass propagation system is needed for multiplication of selected elite material for commercial purposes. This book is help out the students, research workers and biotechnologists.
