Greenhouse Horticulture
'Greenhouse horticulture' is an easy-to-read textbook for all those interested in protected cultivation, from university students and teachers to professional advisers in the field and managers of horticultural companies. This book provides an integrated approach to crop growth and development and the technical aspects of greenhouse cultivation and climate management. It combines an analysis of the relationship between crop production and ambient climate with an explanation of the processes that determine the climate in a protected environment. With the ability to modify the environment comes the need for growers to strike a balance between the costs and benefits of technology. This book outlines the methods and gives several examples of how to make 'optimal' choices about technology. Sustainable management of shoot and root environment is discussed, as well as the pros and cons of vertical farming. The processes addressed in this book, like crop growth, energy balance and mass exchange, apply to any kind of greenhouse. Therefore, in spite of the word 'technology', this is not a book about high-tech greenhouses only.

Critical Plant Studies in Taiwan
Critical Plant Studies in Taiwan presents a historical overview of vegetal ecocriticism in Taiwan. Divided into 12 chapters, it examines the human-plant entanglements on the island. Covering a wide spectrum of topics, such as the imperial plant explorations, the military casuarina afforestation, the mangrove conservation movement, the ecofeminist rooftop garden, the Indigenous millet restoration, the underground mycorrhizal network in urban Taipei, etc., it discloses the phyto-politics in the historical context of the vegetal materialist condition of the island. Intersecting the poetics and politics of plant narratives, it presents the multispecies plantscapes of the island. The first of its kind, the collection launches the historical and localized critical plant studies in Taiwan.
Human-Plant Entanglement and Vegetal Agency in the Poetry of Thomas Hardy and Sylvia Plath
Dilek Bulut Sarikaya scrutinizes human-plant entanglement in the poetry of Thomas Hardy and Sylvia Plath from the perspective of critical plant studies, which is committed to restoring the lost connection between humans and plants. The author offers a theoretical reading of Hardy and Plath's poetry, focusing specifically on how plants are depicted by these two poets as self-conscious and emotional individuals who are turned into vulnerable victims of humans' exploitative practices. The author develops a critical argument on the necessity of eradicating humans' anthropocentric mindsets, categorizing plants as sessile, inert objects and replaces it with a plant-centric world view, perceiving plants as instantly active biological organisms who exist with their botanical accuracy rather than with the impositions of humans' metaphoric meanings upon them.

Floral
"Floral" is an impressive coffee-table book that aims to archive the biodiversity of our planet. Because climate change is now threatening every second plant species. To record the uniqueness and beauty of our nature for posterity, botanical gardens and photographer Richard Fischer have launched an unprecedented art project. At the peak of their life cycle, Fischer photographs the plant with a sophisticated close up technique in his studio. To do this, he uses special light that brings out the filigree structures of his floral photographic model particularly well. The result is outstanding photographs that leave the viewer in rapt amazement, for we have never perceived nature in this way. Richard Fischer presents himself as a Master of Fine Art Photography and creates close-ups of blossoms and flowers that seem almost mystically alien at first glance. The photographer has not simply done nature photography for the illustrated book "Floral". His works are art. In the close-ups, every little hair and every vein of leaf becomes visible. The plants appear transparent and yet in bright colours. "Floral" is an outstanding book of art pictures that should not be missing in any nature photography lover's collection. In an unprecedented way, the artist bows to the beauty of the now rare plants.Text in English and German.
A Cultural History of Plants in the Early Modern Era
A Cultural History of Plants in the Early Modern Era covers the period from 1400 to 1650, a time of discovery and rediscovery, of experiment and innovation. Renaissance learning brought ancient knowledge to modern European consciousness whilst exploration placed all the continents in contact with one another. The dissemination of knowledge was further speeded by the spread of printing. New staples and spices, new botanical medicines, and new garden plants all catalysed agriculture, trade, and science. The great medical botanists of the period attempted no less than what Marlowe's Dr Faustus demanded - a book "wherein I might see all plants, herbs, and trees that grow upon the earth." Human impact on plants and our botanical knowledge had irrevocably changed. The six-volume set of the Cultural History of Plants presents the first comprehensive history of the uses and meanings of plants from prehistory to today. The themes covered in each volume are plants as staple foods; plants as luxury foods; trade and exploration; plant technology and science; plants and medicine; plants in culture; plants as natural ornaments; the representation of plants. Andrew Dalby is an independent scholar and writer, based in France. Annette Giesecke, PhD, is a specialist in the history, meaning, and representation of ancient gardens and designed landscapes at Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand. A Cultural History of Plants in the Early Modern Era is the third volume in the six-volume set, A Cultural History of Plants, also available online as part of Bloomsbury Cultural History, a fully-searchable digital library (see www.bloomsburyculturalhistory.com). General Editors: Annette Giesecke, Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand, and David Mabberley, University of Oxford, UK.
Plant Names Explained
If you, like many gardeners, have a fascination for plant names and their derivations, but stop short of wanting to study botanical nomenclature in great depth, this book is for you! Precise naming is essential to be able to identify plants accurately and most gardeners have at least some knowledge of 'botanical Latin'. But a plant's full botanical name does much more than give it a unique label. The name can often tell you where the plant originated, who discovered it, what shape it is, and much else besides. What's more, the name can be used and understood anywhere in the world. This is a book to have with you at the garden centre, and one to keep beside your bed for an entertaining read. Plant Names Explained is an indispensable guide and makes the subject accessible, enjoyable and fun. It shows not only how plant names work, but also how you can make use of them in entertaining as well as practical ways. A selective alphabetical listing of botanical names and their explanations is accompanied by features exploring cultivar names, with translations of foreign terms and lists of plants you can link with special occasions and celebrations, or with personal names. Other features highlight the places, people and plant characteristics that lie behind the names: gardens and nurseries, countries and cities, plant hunters and gardeners, colours, characteristics and habitats. Plant Names Explained is an essential and fascinating guide to the subject. What may at first seem a dry but necessary convention is revealed to be a way of opening up the intriguing world of plants.
