Biochemical and Thermochemical Conversion Processes of Lignicellulosic Biomass Fractionated Streams
Moving towards a sustainable and green economy requires the use of renewable resources for the production of fuels, chemicals, and materials. In such a scenario, the use of lignocellulosic biomass and waste streams plays an important role, as it consists of abundant renewable resources. The complex nature of lignocellulosic biomass dictates the use of a pretreatment process prior to any further processing. Traditional methods of biomass pretreatment fail to recover cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin in clean streams. It has been recognized that the efficient use of all the main fractions of lignocellulosic biomass (cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin) is an important step towards a financially sustainable biomass biorefinery. In this context, switching from biomass pretreatment to biomass fractionation can offer a sustainable solution to recover relatively clean streams of cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin. This Special issue aims at exploring the most advanced solutions in biomass and waste pretreatment and fractionation techniques, together with novel (thermo)chemical and biochemical processes for the conversion of fractionated cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin to bioenergy, bio-based chemicals, and biomaterials, including the application of such products (i.e., use of biochar for filtration and metallurgical processes), as well as recent developments in kinetic, thermodynamic, and numeric modeling of conversion processes. The scope of this Special Issue will also cover progress in advanced measuring methods and techniques used in the characterization of biomass, waste, and products.
Emerging Technologies for the Energy Systems of the Future

A Frayed New World
The term 'science fiction' conjures an image of aliens, laser guns, and dystopia-a medley of wild, improbable scenarios and possibilities. As a literary genre, we can like it or hate it, but we can't ignore the impact it has on our world, from influencing innovations to shaping public policy. While it may be easy to dismiss sci-fi as fantasy or imagination, it isn't as easy to disregard the questions it raises around ethics and the societal impact of science. We can't chase the futuristic ideas sci-fi introduces and disregard the warnings it delivers. To illustrate, tech giants today are committing billions of dollars to 'Metaverse', touting it as the next big thing. The idea was originally conceptualized in science fiction books-interestingly these presented a world where people are infatuated with virtual avatars, global tech corporations wield more power than governments and the quality of physical life has deteriorated. As we enter a phase where science of today is rapidly catching up with science fiction of yesterday, can we afford a que sera sera approach to our future? 'A Frayed New World' dives into some leading works of science fiction to highlight the importance of greater questioning and making deliberate, ethical choices as we design our future with science and technology.
Selection of Poultry Genotypes in Humid Tropics for Meat Quality Traits, Challenges and Opportunities Ahead
Seminar paper from the year 2018 in the subject Agrarian Studies, grade: 1, Hawassa University, course: Animal Breeding, language: English, abstract: The objective of this paper is to review selection of poultry genotypes in humid tropics for meat quality traits, the challenges, and opportunities including selection of poultry genotypes, breeds of broilers kept by the farmers, selection criteria, and trait preference for meat quality in humid tropics. The indigenous village chicken is the most prominent class of livestock in the country and constitutes about 60-80% of the total poultry population, their productivity levels are low because of low genetic potential and poor nutrition. To overcome the problem of low productivity in local chickens, high-yielding exotic breeds have been introduced through cockerel exchange program by the government. This intervention is bedeviled with many challenges; prominent among them is the birds' inability to adapt to the humid and hot environment, resulting in reduced feed intake and retarded growth. A number of major heat-tolerant genes or gene complexes like naked-neck, ptylopody, polydactyly and frizzle have been identified in the genome of Ghanaian local chicken populations. These unique genes have been reported to ameliorate tropical heat stress and enhance the performance of chickens under hot and humid environments. The existence of the naked-neck gene results in 20-30% less feather coverage overall, with the lower neck of the bird appearing almost naked while the frizzle gene but is reported to reduce the insulating properties of the feather cover (reduce featherweight) and make it easier for the bird to radiate heat from the body.
Sustainable Geotechnics
Today, modern Geotechnical Engineers, who in the past would have considered the phenomena occurring in the (primarily soil) environment, are faced with developments in environmental sciences that are becoming increasingly more detailed and sophisticated, with the natural phenomena and processes surrounding the civil engineering infrastructure being modeled, designed, monitored, and assessed in a more holistic way. This book brings together the state of the art in geotechnics with a focus on sustainable design, resilience, construction, and monitoring of the performance of geotechnical assets from ground investigations, through foundation and drainage design to soil stabilization and reinforcement. Engineers and scientists working in the fields of green infrastructure, nature-based solutions, sustainable drainage, eco-engineering, hydro-geology, landscape planning, plant science, environmental biology or bio-chemistry, earth sciences, GIS, and remote sensing are represented here by articles that show significant geotechnical components or applications. Case studies showcasing the application of the sustainable development principles (e.g., reuse, recycle, reduce; stakeholder engagement; public health; UN Global Sustainability Goals) in Geotechnics are also included in this book.
The coffee production and marketing in Ethiopia. An analysis of challenges and opportunities
Master's Thesis from the year 2014 in the subject Agrarian Studies, grade: 5 (Excellent), Szent Istv獺n University (Institute of Regional Economics and Rural Development), course: Rural Development and Agribusiness, language: English, abstract: The general objective of this paper is to analyze the trends of coffee sector in Ethiopia in general. Furthermore it wants to generate baseline information on production and marketing systems of the selected study area in particular by concentrating on parameters like production, marketing, institutional and organizational support and challenges and opportunities. Currently, Ethiopia contributes 3.6 percent of the total value and 3 percent of the total quantity of coffee traded to the global market, which leads the country to be the 10th largest exporter of coffee in the world and the first exporter in Africa. 40% of the total coffee production of Ethiopia is exported, which earns 33% of the overall value of agricultural goods exported and 24% of the whole export value of the country. Over one-third of the population living in the rural areas and over 15 million populations sustain their livelihoods and participated in coffee production. There are around one million coffee growers in the country. Coffee has been an important commodity which has got greater attention by the government of Ethiopia. It is the first cash crop that the Ethiopia Commodity Exchange (ECX) started trading operations in April 2008 in order to advance coffee markets in the country. High costs and high risks of transaction were the features of agricultural markets in Ethiopia before 2008, with only one third of the production reaching the market. Besides, smallholder farmers have little information about the market which limits them to sell their final products at the nearby market, deal with good prices as well as minimizing their market risk. Coffee market incompetence chiefly affect the income of coffee farmers and discourage them in the process

Image Encryption by Using ACGLML
Doctoral Thesis / Dissertation from the year 2021 in the subject Engineering - Computer Engineering, language: English, abstract: In the present-day era of typical social media communications, it is vital that privacy is to be preserved due to attacks on multimedia data through various methods. It is well known that the encryption standards either lack in keyspace or poor encryption strength. Hence, it is proposed to use a novel method in which both keyspace and encryption are increased. Discrete cosine transforms (DCT) of the image are encrypted using a generalized logistic equation. Due to this idea, both compression and encryption are done simultaneously. Before applying DCT, the image is shuffled using Arnold Cat Map. The proposed compression and encryption method is validated using several chaotic metrics such as; Bifurcation diagram, Mutual information, Kolmogorov Sinai Entropy density, Kolmogorov Sinai Entropy generality, Space-Amplitude diagram, Space-Time diagram. Intruders are discouraged through the improved metrics such as NPCR (Number of Pixels changing rate), UACI (Unified Averaged changed intensity), and mutual information among the lattices used as the key. In the same way, image reconstruction quality is improved and verified through the metrics such as PSNR (Peak Signal to noise ratio) and FOM (Figure of Merit). Compression performance is evaluated through the metric CR (Compression ratio). The performance is evaluated for both gray and color image databases under a noisy channel environment.

Stochastic Models for Geodesy and Geoinformation Science
In geodesy and geoinformation science, as well as in many other technical disciplines, it is often not possible to directly determine the desired target quantities. Therefore, the unknown parameters must be linked with the measured values by a mathematical model which consists of the functional and the stochastic models. The functional model describes the geometrical-physical relationship between the measurements and the unknown parameters. This relationship is sufficiently well known for most applications. With regard to the stochastic model, two problem domains of fundamental importance arise: 1. How can stochastic models be set up as realistically as possible for the various geodetic observation methods and sensor systems? 2. How can the stochastic information be adequately considered in appropriate least squares adjustment models? Further questions include the interpretation of the stochastic properties of the computed target values with regard to precision and reliability and the use of the results for the detection of outliers in the input data (measurements). In this Special Issue, current research results on these general questions are presented in ten peer-reviewed articles. The basic findings can be applied to all technical scientific fields where measurements are used for the determination of parameters to describe geometric or physical phenomena.
Application of Nanoparticles for Oil Recovery
The oil industry has, in the last decade, seen successful applications of nanotechnology in completion systems, completion fluids, drilling fluids, and in improvements of well constructions, equipment, and procedures. However, very few full field applications of nanoparticles as an additive to injection fluids for enhanced oil recovery (EOR) have been reported. Many types of chemical enhanced oil recovery methods have been used in fields all over the world for many decades and have resulted in higher recovery, but the projects have very o6en not been economic. Therefore, the oil industry is searching for a more efficient enhanced oil recovery method. Based on the success of nanotechnology in various areas of the oil industry, nanoparticles have been extensively studied as an additive in injection fluids for EOR. This book includes a selection of research articles on the use of nanoparticles for EOR application. The articles are discussing nanoparticles as additive in waterflooding and surfactant flooding, stability and wettability alteration ability of nanoparticles and nanoparticle stabilized foam for CO2-EOR. The book also includes articles on nanoparticles as an additive in biopolymer flooding and studies on the use of nanocellulose as a method to increase the viscosity of injection water. Mathematical models of the injection of nanoparticle-polymer solutions are also presented.
Cellular Metals
Cellular solids and porous metals have become some of the most promising lightweight multifunctional materials due to their superior combination of advanced properties mainly derived from their base material and cellular structure. They are used in a wide range of commercial, biomedical, industrial, and military applications. In contrast to other cellular materials, cellular metals are non-flammable, recyclable, extremely tough, and chemically stable and are excellent energy absorbers. The manuscripts of this Special Issue provide a representative insight into the recent developments in this field, covering topics related to manufacturing, characterization, properties, specific challenges in transportation, and the description of structural features. For example, a presented strategy for the strengthening of Al-alloy foams is the addition of alloying elements (e.g., magnesium) into the metal bulk matrix to promote the formation of intermetallics (e.g., precipitation hardening). The incorporation of micro-sized and nano-sized reinforcement elements (e.g., carbon nanotubes and graphene oxide) into the metal bulk matrix to enhance the performance of the ductile metal is presented. New bioinspired cellular materials, such as nanocomposite foams, lattice materials, and hybrid foams and structures are also discussed (e.g., filled hollow structures, metal-polymer hybrid cellular structures).

Making Sense in Engineering and the Physical Sciences 6th Edition
Programmable Integrated Photonics
This book provides the first comprehensive, up-to-date and self-contained introduction to the emergent field of Programmable Integrated Photonics (PIP). It covers both theoretical and practical aspects, ranging from basic technologies and the building of photonic component blocks, to design alternatives and principles of complex programmable photonic circuits, their limiting factors, techniques for characterization and performance monitoring/control, and their salient applications both in the classical as well as in the quantum information fields. The book concentrates and focuses mainly on the distinctive features of programmable photonics, as compared to more traditional ASPIC approaches. After some years during which the Application Specific Photonic Integrated Circuit (ASPIC) paradigm completely dominated the field of integrated optics, there has been an increasing interest in PIP. The rising interest in PIP is justified by the surge in a number of emerging applications that call for true flexibility and reconfigurability, as well as low-cost, compact, and low-power consuming devices. Programmable Integrated Photonics is a new paradigm that aims at designing common integrated optical hardware configurations, which by suitable programming, can implement a variety of functionalities. These in turn can be exploited as basic operations in many application fields. Programmability enables, by means of external control signals, both chip reconfiguration for multifunction operation, as well as chip stabilization against non-ideal operations due to fluctuations in environmental conditions and fabrication errors. Programming also allows for the activation of parts of the chip, which are not essential for the implementation of a given functionality, but can be of help in reducing noise levels through the diversion of undesired reflections.
