Selecting the Best Thermal Building Insulation Using a Multi-Attribute Decision Model

2025/07/22 出版

Thermal building insulation has traditionally been viewed as a means to reduce thermal conductivity through the building envelope. Builders typically choose the least expensive material which meets the specifications in order to remain competitive. Other factors regarding long term health and environmental consequences are typically dismissed. However, a recent shift toward sustainability requires that architects and engineers take a more responsible approach to building design. This research takes a holistic approach to selecting thermal building insulation through the use of a multi-attribute decision model.Several types of insulating products from a variety of manufacturers were investigated in order to determine the best insulation alternative for the new Air Force Institute of Technology (AFIT) academic facility at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base based upon the objectives of an Air Force decision-maker. Human health and environmental impacts were considered in addition to those traditionally associated with thermal building insulation. A multi-attribute decision model was chosen for this research because of the numerous alternatives and competing objectives. The results show that polystyrene ranks highest according to value; however, polystyrene has the highest upfront cost. Wet spray cellulose ranks lower but a low upfront cost give it highest value per cost ratio in climate zone 3. Climate appears to be a significant factor in extreme climates. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it. Prototype Development and Dynamic Characterization of Deployable Cubesat Booms

2025/07/22 出版

The current barrier to CubeSat proliferation is their lack of utility depth. These small satellites are exceptionally well suited for specific space missions such as space weather observation and other scientific data gathering exploits, however, they are not suited for every mission. The 10cm-cube form factor that gives the CubeSat its unique advantage is also its greatest hindrance. A potential bridge over this gap is the successful integration of deployable booms onto the CubeSat structure. With this research, the Air Force Institute of Technology (AFIT) explored the parameters of deployable tapespring booms using the triangular retractable and collapsible (TRAC) cross-sectional geometry developed by Air Force Research Labs (AFRL) and used on NASA's CubeSat, Nanosail-D These booms were augmented with reflective membranes and specifically designed to deploy on orbit for the purpose of ground observation, observations that could later be used to determine the deployed dynamics of the booms from optical data gained passively by solar illumination. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it. Fire Dynamics Tools (FDTs) Quantitative Fire Hazard Analysis Methods for the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Fire Protection Inspection Program

2025/07/22 出版

The Yucca Mountain Review Plan provides guidance for the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission staff to evaluate a U.S. Department of Energy license application for a geologic repository. It is not a regulation and does not impose regulatory requirements. The licensing criteria are contained in the U.S. Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) Title 10, Part 63 (10 CFR Part 63), "Disposal of High-Level Radioactive Wastes in a Proposed Geologic Repository at Yucca Mountain, Nevada." The Secretary of Energy has recommended the Yucca Mountain site to the President for the development of a Yucca Mountain repository. The President has notified Congress that he considers the Yucca Mountain site qualified for application for a construction authorization for a repository. Nevada filed a notice of disapproval of the President's recommendation; however, Congress later approved the site recommendation. The U.S. Department of Energy may now submit a license application to the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission. The principal purpose of the Yucca Mountain Review Plan is to ensure the quality, uniformity, and consistency of U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission staff reviews of the license application and any requested amendments. The Yucca Mountain Review Plan has separate sections for reviews of general information, repository safety before permanent closure, repository safety after permanent closure, the research and development program to resolve safety questions, the performance confirmation program, and administrative and programmatic requirements. Each section addresses determining compliance with specific regulatory requirements from 10 CFR Part 63. The regulations and the Yucca Mountain Review Plan are risk-informed, performance-based to the extent practical.Draft Revision 2 of the Yucca Mountain Review Plan was made available for public comment in March 2002. This Final Revision 2 reflects revisions to address those comments, as appropriate. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it. Conceptual MEMS Devices for a Redeployable Antenna

2025/07/22 出版

Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems (MEMS) are becoming an integral part of our lives through a wide range of applications, including MEMS accelerators for air bag deployment in vehicles, micromirrors in projection devices, and various sensors for chemical/biological applications. MEMS are a key aspect of everincreasing significance in a myriad of commercial and military applications. Because of this importance, this thesis utilizes MEMS devices that can deploy and retract an antenna suitably sized for placement on an insect or microrobot for communication purposes. A target monopole antenna with a length of 1 mm was used as a test metric. From this requirement, several MEMS designs using scratch drives and thermal actuators as the basis for powering the motor were developed. Some of the fabricated and tested designs included a gear with side flaps that flip up perpendicular to the substrate; gears that push an antenna beam off the edge of the substrate; and an antenna beam that is moved upwards such that it stands perpendicular to the substrate. These designs had the highest likelihood of success. Other designs included an array of micro gears and guiding beams, a large wheel powered by scratch drives, and a gear with the pawl requiring assembly. For these designs to be successful, several basic modifications would be necessary. The antenna beam that moves into a position perpendicular to the substrate was successfully self-assembled.This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it. Nonlinear Suppression of Range Ambiguity in Pulse Doppler Radar

2025/07/22 出版

Coherent pulse train processing is most commonly used in airborne pulse Doppler radar, achieving adequate transmitter/receiver isolation and excellent resolution properties while inherently inducing ambiguities in both Doppler and range. As first introduced by Palermo in 1962 using two conjugate LFM pulses, the primary nonlinear suppression (NLS) objective involves reducing range ambiguity, given the waveform is nominally unambiguous in Doppler, by using interpulse and intrapulse coding (pulse compression) to discriminate the received ambiguous pulse responses. By introducing a nonlinear operation on compressed (undesired) pulse responses within individual channels, ambiguous energy levels are reduced in channel outputs. The proliferation of high-speed digital signal processing capability and discrete code development occurring since 1962, greatly improves the feasibility of implementing NLS using code sets of multiple codes. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it. Thin Film Encapsulation of Radio Frequency Microelectromechanical Systems Switches

Eric D,Marsh  著
2025/07/22 出版

Microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) radio frequency (RF) switches have been shown to have excellent electrical performance over a wide range of frequencies. However, cost-effective packaging techniques for MEMS switches do not currently exist. This thesis involves the design of RF-optimized encapsulations consisting of dielectric and metal layers, and the creation of a novel thin film encapsulation process to fabricate the encapsulations. The RF performance of several encapsulation designs are evaluated wit h an analytical model, full wave electromagnetic simulation, and laboratory testing. Performance degradation due to parasitic and reflection losses due to the package is considered, and RF feed-throughs of the transmission line into and out of the package are designed and assessed. Ten different encapsulation designs were created and their RF performance was characterized in terms of insertion loss, return loss, and isolation. A switch without an encapsulation and a switch with a dielectric encapsulation were fabricated and tested by the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL), and the test data was used to verify the data from analytical modeling and electromagnetic simulation performed in this work. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it. Liquid Crystal on Silicon Non-Mechanical Steering of a Laser Vibrometer System

2025/07/22 出版

This research examined the possibility of using a non-mechanical beam steering device to steer the beam of a coherent laser radar system. Non-mechanical beam steering devices offer many advantages in size, weight, power requirements, and steering speeds. Additionally, non-mechanical beam steering devices present the capabilities of splitting a single beam into multiple beams as well as beam forming and expanding. The coherent laser radar system used was a Laser Vibrometer System. The beam of the laser vibrometer was steered from 0 mrad to 3 mrad at 1 mrad increments using the liquid crystal on silicon (LCOS) device. The laser vibrometer was able to accurately measure a 2500 Hz vibration target on the steered vibrometry beam at all steered angles. A small LCOS noise signal was detected. The LCOS noise spectrum was determined to be consistent and predictable located at 60 Hz harmonics and was successfully subtracted from the signal. The LCOS device was used to split the vibrometry beam into 2 separate beams. The vibrometer was able to accurately measure two simultaneous independent target signals over the split beam. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it. Three-Dimensional Dynamic Stress Analysis of Sandwich Panels

2025/07/22 出版

A layerwise geometrically nonlinear theory for a thick sandwich plate was developed by introducing assumptions on a variation of transverse strains in the thickness direction of the faces and the core of the plate. An effect of transverse extensibility or compressibility of the core and the face sheets is taken into account, and the terms associated with transverse shear strain of the face sheets and the core are included into the expression for the strain energy. Displacements, obtained by integration of the strain-displacement relations, depend nonlinearly on a coordinate in the thickness direction, and are continuous at the boundaries between the face sheets and the core. The nonlinear von-Karman strain-displacement relations are used in order to provide a representation of the moderately large rotations. The in-plane stresses are computed from the constitutive relations in each ply of the face sheets, using each ply`s material properties, and the transverse stresses are computed by substituting the in-plane stresses into equations of motion and by integrating the equations of motion. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it. Tailoring the Statistical Experimental Design Process for LVC Experiments

2025/07/22 出版

The use of Live, Virtual and Constructive (LVC) Simulation environments are increasingly being examined for potential analytical use particularly in test and evaluation. The LVC simulation environments provide a mechanism for conducting joint mission testing and system of systems testing when scale and resource limitations prevent the accumulation of the necessary density and diversity of assets required for these complex and comprehensive tests. The statistical experimental design process is re-examined for potential application to LVC experiments and several additional considerations are identified to augment the experimental design process for use with LVC. This augmented statistical experimental design process is demonstrated by a case study involving a series of tests on an experimental data link for strike aircraft using LVC simulation for the test environment. The goal of these tests is to assess the usefulness of information being presented to aircrew members via different datalink capabilities. The statistical experimental design process is used to structure the experiment leading to the discovery of faulty assumptions and planning mistakes that could potentially wreck the results of the experiment. Lastly, an aggressive sequential experimentation strategy is presented for LVC experiments when test resources are limited. This strategy depends on a foldover algorithm that we developed for nearly orthogonal arrays to rescue LVC experiments when important factor effects are confounded. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it. A Comparative Analysis of Cockpit Display Development Tools

2025/07/22 出版

Currently, no standard methodology exists that enables cockpit display engineers to evaluate software tools used in the development of graphical cockpit displays. Furthermore, little research has been accomplished in comparing current software development tools with traditional hand-coded methods. This research effort discusses a framework for analyzing cockpit display software development tools and follows through with a detailed analysis comparing today's hand-coding standard, OpenGL, with two of today's cockpit display software development suites, Virtual Application Prototyping System (VAPS) and Display Editor. The comparison exploits the analysis framework establishing the advantages and disadvantages of the three software development suites. The analysis framework is comprised of several detailed questionnaires that enable the cockpit engineer to quantify important subjective criteria such as learning curve, user interface, readability, portability, extensibility, and maintenance. The questionnaires developed for each subjective criterion contain questions with weighted answers that enable the cockpit engineer to evaluate graphical software development tools. The questions were adapted from multiple sources including personal experience, display experts, pilots, navigators, case tool, and text sources. In addition, the comparative analysis evaluates several objective criteria with respect to development tools and the displays generated with them such as update rate, development time, executable size, and CPU/Memory usage level. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it. Wideband Signal Detection Using a Down-Converting Channelized Receiver

2025/07/22 出版

Ultra wideband (UWB) signals typically occupy a very large spectral bandwidth resulting from extremely short duration pulses. Direct sequence spread spectrum (DSSS) signals typically occupy a large spectral bandwidth resulting from spreading methods. Both signals can be difficult to detect without having prior knowledge of their structure and/or existence. This research develops and evaluates techniques for the non-cooperative (nonmatched filter) detection of such signals. Impulse-like UWB and DSSS signals are received in an Additive White Gaussian Noise (AWGN) channel and are assessed using a bandpass filtered, down-converting (BPF-D/C) channelized receiver architecture. Modeling and simulation is conducted to characterize BPF-D/C channelized receiver detection performance, which is compared with the performance of two other non-cooperative detection receivers: a previously-introduced down-converting (D/C) channelized receiver and a conventional radiometer. The BPF-D/C channelized receiver detection performance for both signals of interest is shown to depend on the initial phase of the down-conversion mixers. There are usually some combinations of signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and channel bandwidth where the BPF-D/C channelized receiver outperforms the radiometer and D/C channelized receiver for a UWB pulse. For a DSSS waveform, detection performance using the BPFD/ C channelized receiver is consistently poorer than radiometric detection. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it. Effects of Jamming on Radars

2025/07/22 出版

Although jamming of radar's has been in vogue for nearly 50 years there appears to be no comprehensive report on the subject matter. The purpose of this research is to fill this gap. The methodology consisted of analysis, simulation, and where feasible experimental demonstrations. Experimental equipment consisted of a digital noise generator whose output was used to modulate a high frequency carrier in various fashions. The modulated output was fed into a very sensitive super-heterodyne receiver whose Intermediate frequency (IF) bandwidth could be varied from tens of Hz to mega Hz range. The detected output was displayed on a sampling oscilloscope. The display was in turn digitized and stored to make hard copies for documentation purposes. There was enough flexibility in the equipment to make a wide variety of observations. Experiments showed that the victim receiver should have sufficient bandwidth to fully respond to the jamming signal. In the case of pure tone jamming, IF bandwidth requirements were minimal and any increase beyond the minimum did not improve jamming effectiveness. In case of pseudo random analog or digital noise, increasing the shift register sequence length and clock frequency made it more difficult for the receiver to recover the jamming waveform and identification. This implied inability to devise quick countermeasures. As follow-on to this research, more precise experiments involving FM by noise and random pulses are suggested. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it. Investigation Into Fretting Fatigue Under Cyclic Contact Load and Inconjunction With Plain Fatigue of Titanium Alloy

2025/07/22 出版

Fretting fatigue is the surface damage that occurs at the interface between two components that are under going a small amplitude oscillatory movements. Itresults in a reduction of the material life comparing to the plain fatigue. Most of the previous works were accomplished under a constant applied contact load anda little effort has been done under a variable contact load, while none of these studies have taken the phase difference between the axial and the contact load. Theprimary goal of this study is to investigate the effect of phase difference between axial and contact loads on fretting fatigue behavior of Ti-6Al-4V alloy and todetermine the behavior of this material under combination of fretting fatigue and plain fatigue. The frequency of both axial and contact loads was the same .i.e.10 Hz. During the variable contact load condition; only the axial stress range and the phase angle were varying. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it. Integrating Oil Debris and Vibration Measurements for Intelligent Machine Health Monitoring

2025/07/22 出版

A diagnostic tool for detecting damage to gears was developed. Two different measurement technologies, oil debris analysis and vibration were integrated into a health monitoring system for detecting surface fatigue pitting damage on gears. This integrated system showed improved detection and decision-making capabilities as compared to using individual measurement technologies. This diagnostic tool was developed and evaluated experimentally by collecting vibration and oil debris data from fatigue tests performed in the NASA Glenn Spur Gear Fatigue Rig. An oil debris sensor and the two vibration algorithms were adapted as the diagnostic tools. An inductance type oil debris sensor was selected for the oil analysis measurement technology. Gear damage data for this type of sensor was limited to data collected in the NASA Glenn test rigs. For this reason, this analysis included development of a parameter for detecting gear pitting damage using this type of sensor. The vibration data was used to calculate two previously available gear vibration diagnostic algorithms. The two vibration algorithms were selected based on their maturity and published success in detecting damage to gears. Oil debris and vibration features were then developed using fuzzy logic analysis techniques, then input into a multi sensor data fusion process. Results show combining the vibration and oil debris measurement technologies improves the detection of pitting damage on spur gears. As a result of this research, this new diagnostic tool has significantly improved detection of gear damage in the NASA Glenn Spur Gear Fatigue Rigs. This research also resulted in several other findings that will improve the development of future health monitoring systems. Oil debris analysis was found to be more reliable than vibration analysis for detecting pitting fatigue failure of gears and is capable of indicating damage progression. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it. Doppler Aliasing Reduction in Wide-Angle Synthetic Aperture Radar Using Phase Modulated Random Stepped-Frequency Waveforms

2025/07/22 出版

This research investigates the benefits of using several phase modulated Random Stepped Frequency (RSF) waveforms in a Wide-Angle Synthetic Aperture Radar (WA-SAR) scenario. RSF waveforms have been demonstrated to have desirable properties which allow for cancelling of Doppler aliased scatterers in WA-SAR images. Additional aliased energy reduction is realized by improving the uniformity of the fre- quency coverage across the waveform's bandwidth. Phase code modulations applied to the subpulses of a RSF waveform spread the subpulse frequency content and im- prove WA-SAR image quality. A length 13 Barker code applied to a RSF waveform produces an image with a 91.95% reduction in the aliased energy present relative to a WA-SAR image produced using uncoded RSF. Length 25 Frank and P4 coded RSF waveforms reduce aliased energy by 96.65% and 96.72% respectively. Additionally, phase coded RSF waveforms produce images with improved noise-free dynamic range capabilities. The Barker, Frank and P4 coded waveforms improve the noise-free dynamic range by 9.4 dB, 12.6 dB, and 12.4 dB, respectively. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it. An Investigation Into the Feasibility of Using a Modern Gravity Gradient Instrument for Passive Aircraft Navigation and Terrain Avoidance

2025/07/22 出版

Recently, Gravity Gradient Instruments (GGIs) - devices which measure the spatial derivatives of gravity, have improved remarkably due to development of accelerometer technologies. Specialized GGIs are currently flown on aircraft for geological purposes in the mining industries. As such, gravity gradient data is recorded in flight and detailed gradient maps are created after post mission processing. These maps, if stored in a database onboard an aircraft and combined with a GGI, form the basis for a covert navigation system using a map matching process. This system is completely passive and essentially unjammable. To determine feasibility of this method, a GGI sensor model was developed to investigate signal levels at representative flight conditions. Aircraft trajectories were simulated over modeled gravity gradient maps to determine the utility of flying modern GGIs in the roles of navigation and terrain avoidance. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it. Two Dimensional Positioning and Heading Solution for Flying Vehicles Using a Line-Scanning Laser Radar (LADAR)

2025/07/22 出版

Emerging technology in small autonomous flying vehicles requires the systems to have a precise navigation solution in order to perform tasks. In many critical environments, such as indoors, GPS is unavailable necessitating the development of supplemental aiding sensors to determine precise position. This research investigates the use of a line scanning laser radar (LADAR) as a standalone two dimensional position and heading navigation solution and sets up the device for augmentation into existing navigation systems. A fast histogram correlation method is developed to operate in real-time on board the vehicle providing position and heading updates at a rate of 10 Hz. LADAR navigation methods are adapted to 3 dimensions with a simulation built to analyze performance loss due attitude changes during flight. These simulations are then compared to experimental results collected using SICK LD-OEM 1000 mounted a cart traversing. The histogram correlation algorithm applied in this work was shown to successfully navigate a realistic environment where a quadrotor in short flights of less than 5 min in larger rooms. Application in hallways show great promise providing a stable heading along with tracking movement perpendicular to the hallway. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it. Exploring Potential ADS-B Vulnerabilities in the FAA's NextGen Air Transportation System

2025/07/22 出版

The Federal Aviation Administration's (FAA) Next Generation upgrade proposes a fundamental transformation to thenational airspace system (NAS) that aims to reduce dependence on outdated radar infrastructure, increase airline safetyand condense required aircraft spatial separation. A key component of the upgrade is the Automatic DependentSurveillance-Broadcast (ADS-B) system. ADS-B provides continual broadcast of aircraft position, identity, velocityand other information over unencrypted data links to generate a precise air picture for air traffic management. Officialdocuments claim operational requirements necessitate unencrypted data links while maintaining that there is a lowlikelihood for malicious exploitation. This paper studies the security vulnerabilities associated with the ADS-Bimplementation plan and develops a taxonomy to classify attacks and examine potential impacts the attacks have onoverall NAS operations. The taxonomy helps provide a comprehensive understanding of the threats associated withADS-B implementation and facilitates risk analysis and risk management. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it. A Comparison of Film Cooling Techniques in a High Speed, True Scale, Fully Colled Turbine Vane Ring

2025/07/22 出版

An effort was undertaken to understand the impact of different film cooling configurations in a true scale turbine vane for three proprietary airfoil designs. The measurements for this study were taken at the United States Air Force Turbine Research Facility (TRF). The TRF enabled heat transfer data to be obtained on full scale turbine hardware under realistic engine conditions. The surface heat flux of the turbine blades was analyzed using the impulse response method. The overall effectiveness was compared between airfoil types at 60% span over varying streamwise locations on both suction and pressure surfaces. Using an approximated massflow, a comparison of the overall effectiveness with respect to massflow rate could be made between airfoils at three different airfoil locations. The shaped hole and slot cooling configurations were found to have higher average overall effectiveness for lower massflow rates than the multiple hole configuration based on the conditions tested. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it. Modeling and Simulation Technology a New Vector for Flight-test

2025/07/22 出版

In June of 1995, senior Air Force leadership led by Secretary Widnall and General Ronald Fogelman, Chief of Staff met to establish policy for the future of Air Force modeling and simulation (MS). The result of this conference was a the publication of A New Vector as a balanced strategy and a roadmap for Air Force MS. The MS roadmap in A New Vector is best compared to something with which the Air Force is very familiar-how to assess and invest in the capability of aircraft systems. Because aircraft systems assessment is the basic mission of flight-test, this thesis addresses the question: As design and engineering models increase in scope and complexity from the physical component level to complex systems, what are the capabilities and limitations of MS for flight test? In order to answer the research question three criteria were used to evaluate the results of each case study. First, the costs and benefits of MS were compared with the tradeoffs required for not doing MS. Second, the engineering validity of the MS efforts was evaluated. Engineering validity is the determination as to whether the modeling data were sufficiently accurate to solve the problem at hand. Third, the comprehensiveness of each MS effort was evaluated. For the purposes of this study, comprehensiveness is whether an MS effort had sufficient scope to solve the entire problems. An MS effort that completely and accurately predicted the experimental outcome of flight-test was comprehensive. The process used for answering these questions was a systematic examination of three case studies. The first case covered MS at the physical component level, and looked at how computational fluid dynamics was used to solve a stores separation problem on the B-1B. The second case was an examination of the VISTA in-flight simulator as a tool for modeling closed-loop control systems. The third case is examines the role of MS in designing and flight-testing the Boeing 777. All three cases discussed in this researchThis work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it. A Platform for Antenna Optimization With Numerical Electromagnetics Code Incorporated With Genetic Algorithms

2025/07/22 出版

This thesis investigation presents a unique incorporation of the Method of Moments with a Genetic Algorithm. The use of this tool can improve antennas whose basis of designs are both the Yagi-Uda antenna and the Log Periodic Dipole Array (LPDA) antenna. The applications for these two antennas are of particular use in Passive Remote Sensing (PRS) and Over the Horizon Radar (OTHR). The designs are reached in a low cost and effective manner, the implementation of which is simple and expandable. A Genetic Algorithm (GA) is used in concert with the Numerical Electromag- netics Code, Version 4 (NEC4) to create and optimize typical wire antenna designs including single elements and arrays, the result being antennas with impressive char- acteristics. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it. An Examination of Range and Doppler Mismatch and Their Effects on Radar Modeling

2025/07/22 出版

A commonly accepted airborne phased array radar model simplifies the analytical derivation by assuming a waveform is perfectly matched in range and Doppler shift. This assumption means the matched lter output is e ectively constant for all possible received scatterer Doppler and range mismatches, greatly simplifying the analytical development from that point forward. This research removes the matched Doppler and range assumption and examines the e ects of several common waveforms on the model's delity along with the associated impact on radar performance, both non-adaptive and adaptive. Analysis is completed using power spectral density comparisons and the fully adaptive output signal to interference plus noise ratio comparison. Results indicate that the model's delity is impacted little by the Time Frequency Auto Correlation Function. However, change in bandwidth from the compressed waveforms does impact the model. Increased bandwidth introduces more thermal noise which dominates clutter returns. Therefore, the clutter problem becomes less di cult. The trade-o is a reduction in the resolution capability of the clutter spectrum. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it. Structural Response of the Slotted Waveguide Antenna Stiffened Structure Components Under Compression

2025/07/22 出版

The Slotted Waveguide Antenna Stiffened Structure (SWASS) is an aircraft system that can provide the capabilities of a stiffened panel skin structure and a slotted waveguide radar antenna simultaneously. The system made from carbon fiber reinforced polymers is designed around a 10 GHz radar frequency in the X-band range and uses a WR- 90 waveguide as a baseline for design. The system is designed for integration into fuselage or wing sections of intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) aircraft and would increase the system performance through the availability of increased area and decreased system weight. Elemental parts of the SWASS structure were tested in compression after preliminary testing was completed for material characterization of a resin reinforced plain woven carbon fiber fabric made from Grafil 34-700 fibers and a Tencate RS-36 resin with a resin mass ratio of 30%. Testing included finite element stress and strain field characterization of seven single slot configurations, and results showed the longitudinal 90- slot was the best structural slot by about 30% in terms of maximum von Mises stress. Single waveguides were tested in the non-slotted configuration and a configuration including a five longitudinal slot array in one waveguide wall. Finite element results were compared with experimental results and showed good comparisons in all areas. The slot array was determined to have a decrease in nonlinear limit load of 8% from the finite element simulations and 12% from the experimental results. All waveguides showed the characteristics of local wall buckling as the initial failure mechanism and had significant buckling features before ultimate material failure occured. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it. Numerical Study of Optical Delay in Semiconductor Multilayer Distributed Bragg Reflector and Tunable Microcavity Structures

2025/07/22 出版

The Air Force has a growing need for the greater bandwidth, speed, and flexibility offered by optical communication links. Future space systems and airborne platforms will most likely use optical signals for efficient power transmission and to minimize the possibility of spoofing and eavesdropping. Tunable optical delays play an important role in the implementation of free space optical communication links. The primary challenge in implementing these systems is the active maintenance of coherent wave fronts across the system's optical aperture. For space applications, this aperture may be hundreds of meters in diameter. Spatial segmentation of a large aperture into smaller elements is one approach that can be used to solve the problem of coherent waveform maintenance. In this research I explore three methods of achieving electrically tunable optical delay in a semiconductor structure. My first approach entails the use of multiple quantum wells inserted within the high index layers of a distributed Bragg reflector (DBR) to produce tunable optical delay when a transverse electric field is applied across the entire DBR. The second approach uses a cantilever mounted on top of a DBR structure. The cantilever is also a DBR and is used to vary the thickness of an air gap within the structure. A third approach relies on changing the angle of incidence of light on a DBR structure to produce a delay. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it. Comparative Energy and Cost Analysis Between Conventional HVAC Systems and Geothermal Heat Pump Systems

2025/07/22 出版

To sustain the United States current affluence and strength, the U.S. Government has encouraged energy conservation through executive orders, federal and local laws, and consumer education. A substantial reduction in U.S. energy consumption could be realized by using geothermal heat pumps to heat and cool buildings throughout the U.S., though initial installation cost are a deterrent. This thesis uses Monte Carlo simulation to predict energy consumption, life cycle cost and payback period for the vertical closed-loop ground source heat pump (GSHP)relative to conventional heating ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems: airsource heat pumps (ASHP), air-cooled air conditioning with either natural gas, fuel oil, or liquid petroleum gas furnaces, or with electrical resistance heating. The Monte Carlo simulation is performed for a standard commercial office building within each of the 48 continental states. Regardless of the conventional HVAC system chosen, the simulation shows that for each state the GSHP has the highest probability of using less energy and having a lower operating and life cycle cost than conventional HVAC systems; however, initial installation cost are typically twice that of conventional HVAC systems and payback periods vary greatly depending on site conditions. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it. Analysis of the Application of a Triggered Isomer Heat Exchanger as a Replacement for the Combustion Chamber in an Off-the-Shelf Turbojet

2025/07/22 出版

The objective of this research was to determine the feasibility of using a nuclear reaction heat source, such as the electromagnetically triggered decay of an isomer, in a solid-state heat exchanger to power an off-the-shelf gas turbine engine. Two primary performance measures examined were the total pressure decrement across the heat exchanger and the total temperature capability leaving the heat exchanger. The analysis included the use of acommercialsoftware package, ANSYS// 5.6.1, running on a 700 MHz Pentium III PC. This package includes the FLOTRAN computational fluid dynamics program, a finite element program based on unstructured meshes, with multiple discretization schemes, turbulence models, and advection options. Boundary conditions on velocity, pressure, temperature, heat flux, and heat generation are available and were used in this research. Three basic geometries of heat exchanger were explored in this research: Concentric annular tubes, radial trapezoidal fins, and a dual, concentric annulus of rectangular fins. These were selected due to the simplicity of geometry and potential ease of manufacture. In addition, because the flow through all of these geometries could be reasonably approximated by a series of two dimensional flow fields, run times were on the order of 1 day, a significant reduction from 3-D flow calculations. All three configurations produced sufficient heat transfer. Pressure ratios across the heat exchangers varied in the range from 94.597O to 97.5%. Turbine inlet temperatures varied from 986 K to 1150 K (1775 R to 2070 R). In the J-57 engine, these conditions will produce a static, sea-level thrust of approximately 37,000 N (8,300 lb.) to 47,000 N (10,600 lb.), compared to 46,000 N (10,300 lb.) for the conventional engine. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it. The Concept Design of a Split Flow Liquid Hydrogen Turbopump

2025/07/22 出版

An initial design of a split flow liquid hydrogen turbopump for the Dual Expander Aerospike Nozzle (DEAN) upper stage engine was completed. The engine nozzle is an annular aerospike. The engine cycle requires a combustion chamber pressure of 1,740 psia. The DEAN is designed to deliver 57,200 lbf of thrust and 472 seconds of Isp. The turbopump design was completed using a meanline software tool. The design consists of a single piece rotor, with a two-stage pump and radial inflow turbine. The turbopump flow rates are 15.1 and 7.55 lbm/s into the first and second stage, respectively. The first and second stage pumps use unshrouded impellers. An interstage transfer models the fluid split flow. The fluid for each stage exits through a volute. The first and second stage impeller hub-tip ratios are 0.3 and 0.35, respectively. The turbine is a full admission reaction type. At the design condition, the turbine delivers 3,607 horsepower at a total pressure ratio of 1.84.This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it. Damage Detection Using Lamb Waves for Structural Health Monitoring

2025/07/22 出版

Nondestructive structural health monitoring (SHM) is an evolving technology being developed for monitoring air and space systems. The information gathered on a system's structural integrity through SHM detection methods may result in reduced costly maintenance inspections, enhanced safety, and system failure predic- tions. This study evaluates Lamb wave approaches used to detect simulated cracks in laboratory experiments on thin plates to detect realistic damage in a test arti- cle representing the complex geometry of an existing aircraft bulkhead. We take a "hot-spot" monitoring approach, where we monitor an area of the structure known to fail. In our experiments, we evaluated the use of piezoelectric generated tuned Lamb waves for crack detection. The use of Lamb waves, guided elastic waves in a plate, has shown promise in detecting highly localized damage due to the relatively short wavelengths of the propagating waves. We evaluated both pitch-catch and pulse-echo approaches for Lamb wave excitation and measurement. Crack detection is accomplished by comparing the responses from the damaged test article to the responses of the healthy test article.

Design of an Oxygen Turbopump for a Dual Expander Cycle Rocket Engine

2025/07/22 出版

The design of a pump intended for use with a dual expander cycle (LOX/H2) engine is presented. This arrangement offers a number of advantages over hydrogen expander cycles; among these are the elimination of gearboxes and inter-propellant purges and seals, an extended throttling range, and higher engine operating pressures and performance. The target engine has been designed to meet the needs of Phase III of the Integrated High Payoff Rocket Propulsion Technology (IHPRPT) program; thus, this pump must meet the program's reliability, maintainability, and service life goals. In addition, this pump will be driven by warm gaseous oxygen. In order to meet the needs of this engine, the pump will need to be capable of delivering 106 lbm/s (48.1 kg/s) at 4500 psi (31 MPa); this will necessitate a turbine capable of supplying at least 2215 hp (1652 kW). The pump and turbine were designed with the aid of an industry standard design program; the design methodology and justification for design choices are presented. Appropriate materials of construction and bearings for this pump are discussed. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it. Development of a Robust Optical Image Registration Algorithm for Negating Speckle Noise Effects in Coherent Images Generated by a Laser Imaging System

2025/07/22 出版

The Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) Sensors Directorate has constructed and tested a coherent LIght Detection And Ranging (LIDAR) imaging system called Laservision. Registration of individual images remains a significant problem in the generation of useful images collected using coherent imaging systems. Coherent images typically contain significant speckle noise created by the coherency of the laser. Each image collected by the system must be properly registered to allow for averaging the images to produce a single image with adequate resolution to allow detection and identification algorithms to operate accurately or for system operators to perform target detection and identification within a scene. An investigation of the performance of a new image registration algorithm designed using laser speckle noise statistics is conducted on data collected from the Laservision system. This thesis documents the design and performance of the proposed technique compared to that of a standard cross-correlation algorithm. Based on using only speckle noise statistics, the simulated data test results indicate that there is a small range of low average signal-to-noise ratios (SNR) where there is the potential to improve the shift estimation error by 0.1 to 0.16 pixel. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it. Investigation of Laser Beam Combining and Clean-Up via Seeded Simulated Brillouin Scattering in Multimode Optical Fibers

Bryan J,Choi  著
2025/07/22 出版

The purpose of this thesis research was to determine if stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) amplification in multimode optical fibers would exhibit the same laser beam combining and clean-up properties exhibited by SBS oscillation, and to characterize the Brillouin amplification process in a multimode optical fiber. Beam combining in multimode fibers via SBS is being considered as a method of combining low power laser beams into a single beam having higher power and superior spatial coherence for applications such as electro-optic countermeasures. Experimental results demonstrate seeding a 9.5 m fiber significantly reduced the pump power required to initiate SBS. An amplified Stokes beam was observed with as little as 4 mW of pump power, and the maximum conversion efficiency was 44%, similar to conversion efficiencies reported for SBS oscillation. Polarization of the Stokes beam depended on seed beam polarization. The profile of the amplified Stokes beam depended on the coupling and polarization of the seed fiber; both LP01 and LP11 modes were observed from the 9.5 m fiber. However, the Stokes beam profile did not depend on spatial quality of the pump beam, exhibiting some of the clean-up properties associated with the SBS oscillation process. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it. Development of In-Plane Surface Deformation Sensing for Thin Film PVDF Actuated Membrane Mirrors

2025/07/22 出版

This study investigated the feasibility of surface deformation sensing of a membrane mirror using only embedded PVDF sensors. Results were compared to measured deformations using a scanning laser vibrometer. The frequency response function (FRF) was measured based on recorded voltages of a singlelayer 7-sensor mirror actuated externally from the embedded PVDF actuators. Additionally, a two-layer, 7-sensor, 7-actuator membrane mirror was constructed for use, with one layer acting as the sensing layer and the other acting as the actuation layer. The measured FRF for this mirror was compared to previous results. Finally a single-layer 61-sensor PVDF mirror was constructed to experimentally investigate the practicality of denser sensor/actuators patterns. Experimental results for all configurations are presented.

Study of Magnetogasdynamic Flow Acceleration in a Scramjet Nozzle

Erik K,Ross  著
2025/07/22 出版

The research project studied the benfits of Magnetogasdynamic (MGD) acceleration on a scramjet nozzle. MGD is a technology that relies on electromagnetic fields to extract and/or add energy to flow fields. The scramjet engine in the "AJAX" concept proposed by D.I.Brichkii et al. (2001) of St. Petersburg, Russia would utilize an MGD power generator in the di user which could potentially provide electrical power for the aircraft support systems and an MGD accelerator in the nozzle of the engine. Using an AFRL/VAAC CFD code that was modi ed for MGD computations, this project investigated the e ect conductivity and load factor had on the speci c thrust and e ciency of an MGD accelerator composed of segmented electrodes in the nozzle of a scramjet engine. For a load factor of 1:6, results showed a 95% increase in speci c thrust. When MGD generation was employed at a load factor of 0:8, a 31% decrease in speci c thrust was calculated. The solutions included high wall temperatures which need more investigation for MGD acceleration to be practical. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it. Improving Maintenance Data Collection via Point-of-Maintenance Implementation

2025/07/22 出版

Maintenance data collection is an integral part of flightline aircraft maintenance. Historically, this data was input via traditional keyboard data entry methods at a computer terminal. These terminals are typically located in the aircraft maintenance unit (AMU) facility, away from where the actual maintenance is being performed. In contrast to the traditional approach, the Point-of-Maintenance system (POMX) seeks to reduce the data entry burden while increasing data accuracy through the use of E-Tools such as ruggedized laptop computers and handheld portable maintenance aids (PMAs). POMX enables data entry at the aircraft or other maintenance location via wireless local area network or batch storage, and seeks to capture data as the maintenance is performed. This research analyzes the impact of a POMX system on maintenance data error rates. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it.
