Through the Fire
Mental health touches every aspect of life in the United States: from police encounters to prisons, and from hospitals to housing, those suffering from mental illness are overrepresented and underserved. In Through the Fire, leading expert in the field of mental health law Fredrick Vars reveals that some of the most promising reforms are coming from within the community of individuals living with mental illness. In this personal and compassionate survey of mental health in America, readers meet the real-life advocates working on the frontlines of reform. Through their stories, and bolstered by his own experience inside the system after suffering a psychotic break, Vars reveals that hopeful solutions are already in action. Illustrating key reforms such as respite housing programs, unique peer-to-peer services, and Assertive Community Treatment (ACT), a highly effective but underused model for supporting people with serious mental health problems outside of institutions, Through the Fire shows that lasting change requires a paradigm shift: Mental illness is a disease, not a character flaw. Empowering people with mental illness to become effective advocates and mentors for themselves and others may be the spark to fuel much-needed change.

The Truth About Core Training
A simple guide to understanding core and pelvic floor function and dysfunction. What if you were told you could work your core just by better breathing, that correcting your posture is the first step to having a flat belly, or that improving your urinary incontinence or prolapse symptoms can involve breathing better and correcting your posture? The Truth About Core Training is the book that everyone should read. With a holistic perspective, it explains in an easy-to-understand way how concepts such as intra-abdominal pressure, muscle tone versus muscle strength, breathing patterns or posture play an essential role in maintaining your core integrity and how by training your core smarter, you can prevent and manage conditions such as stress urinary incontinence, pelvic organ prolapse and abdominal diastasis, the most common pelvic conditions women suffer, and also disk, groin and abdominal hernias, more frequent amongst men. The book explains the aspects involved in core functionality and presents simple exercises to build your core foundation. The last chapters introduce you to the hypopressive technique, an innovative core training system that encompasses the principles of core functionality through breathing and postural therapy, as well as myofascial and neurodynamic release through a sequence of poses and moves performed along with a unique breathing pattern. It is an empowering book that gives you, once and for all, the knowledge you need about your core and pelvic floor to train smarter without having to perform a never-ending list of crunches, planks and pelvic floor clenching exercises that work these muscles in isolation. An invaluable resource presented by Paula Campanero. A former professional pole vaulter who experienced the negative effects of high-impact exercise and heavy lifting in her own body. Paula has a bachelor's degree in Sports and Health Science and a master's in Sports Performance. My Roller Coaster Ride with God and Cancer
CANCER! The big "C." Phone call on January 5, 2022, with a doctor on the other end saying, "Mr. Ferguson, you have cancer." Nothing will ever be quite the same again, will it? I was just one of nearly two million new cancer cases reported in the United States that year. Eventually almost 40% of the population will be diagnosed with cancer. Everyone reading this book knows someone, probably several, who are in this battle right now, some of whom are near and dear to you. You may have heard the cancer diagnosis yourself like I did and be amid your own battle.Everyone's cancer battle is unique. Mine had some extremely rare twists and turns that left me at death's door fighting for life, and yet gave me some amazing insights which I felt compelled to share in print. They are of such a varied nature that no one will finish the book without being thankful for what they learned. As a well-seasoned writer, I can with some certainty predict that to be true, trust me. As a long-time minister, I have spoken at more memorials than I can remember of those who lost their battle, my father being one of them. I have sat at the bedsides of those suffering in all stages of their illness, watching some draw their last breath. But I have seen many emerge on the other side with a smile on their faces, a result of a "cancer free" diagnosis. This is where I am right now, but there are no guarantees for what lies ahead. But as a good doctor friend of mine once said, "I know I am going to die, but not today!" All we have is today, and I want to help you live it with hope in your heart no matter what your present challenges are. To that end I wrote this book. May God speak to your heart as you read it!

Anything but Frank
Kenneth Kerns shares the story of a life-altering stroke that led him on a journey to a quieter, more intentional way of living in this heartfelt memoir. Before his hemorrhagic stroke in April 2020, the author was a high-achieving university administrator, juggling demanding responsibilities with a deeply rooted devotion to his wife and two daughters. His career was meaningful...but his family was everything. Then came ten days in a coma. When he awoke, he was paralyzed on his right side and struggling with aphasia. The life he knew was gone, and rebuilding a new one would take everything he had. Years later, the physical signs of his stroke are still evident, but the changes inside have been even more profound. Through therapy and sheer determination, he's discovered an inner peace and a deeper appreciation for life's small victories. This book explores the hard lessons, unexpected joys, and the transformative power of gratitude that have shaped the author's new reality. It's a story of embracing a slower, more present way of living where each day is celebrated as a gift.
