Anticipatory Ethics and the Use of Crispr in Humans
The future of gene editing in humans will involve the use of CRISPR. How we think about the combination of the scientific, ethical, and moral aspects of this technology is paramount to the success or failure of CRISPR in humans. Unfortunately, the current scientific discussion around CRISPR in humans has left ethics trailing behind due to the rapid pace of innovation. New modes of ethics and stakeholder participation are needed to keep pace with rapid scientific advances and provide the necessary policy and ethical frameworks necessary to help CRISPR flourish as an important health care tool to treat human disease. This requires intense interdisciplinary collaboration and discussion between scientists and philosophers, policymakers and legal scholars, and the public.Dr. Michael W. Nestor (a neuroscientist who actively uses CRISPR in pre-clinical research) and Professor Richard Wilson (a philosopher who focuses on anticipatory ethics) set out to develop a new ethical approachconsidering the use of CRISPR in human targeted therapies. The field of anticipatory ethics is uniquely poised to tackle questions in fast-evolving technical areas where the pace of innovation outstrips traditional philosophical approaches. Furthermore, because of its "anticipatory" nature, this type of analysis provides the opportunity to look ahead and into the future concerning potential uses of CRISPR in humans, uses that are not currently possible. Nestor and Wilson collaborate both scientifically and philosophically in this book to forecast potential outcomes as the scientific and medical community goes beyond using CRISPR to correct genes that underlie diseases where a single gene is involved. Instead, Nestor and Wilson envision CRISPR in complex, multigenic disorders with a specific focus on the use of CRISPR to edit genes involved in mental traits like IQ or other cognitive characteristics. They argue that the use of CRISPR to modify genes that are potentially important for mental traits represents a particular category for special consideration from scientists, policymakers, the public, and other stakeholders. Nestor and Wilson explain why using CRISPR to alter mental states is very different from treating a disease like cancer by combining the latest scientific advancements with anticipatory ethics and philosophical phenomenology. Their analysis considers the role that mental states play in personhood and the lived experience-as genes that can change mental/cognitive attributes like IQ have wide-ranging effects on the lived experience in ways that are categorically different from other attributes. This book was written to set a non-exhaustive framework for shared understanding and discussion across disciplines and appeal to scientists and non-scientists alike. This appeal is made inclusively, inviting all stakeholders to engage in active dialogue about the appropriate context for using CRISPRand other gene-editing technologies in humans. It provides policy analysis and recommendations for assuring the most inclusive, equitable, and ethically sound use of CRISPR in humans, concerning its positive potential to treat mental conditions like depression, schizophrenia, Alzheimer's disease, autism, and the potential to induce other cognitive enhancements.

Cybersecurity and the Digital Health
Cybercrime is increasingly exposing the health domain to growing risk. The push towards a strong connection of citizens to health services, through digitalization, has undisputed advantages. Digital health allows remote care, the use of medical devices with a high mechatronic and IT content with strong automation, and a large interconnection of hospital networks with an increasingly effective exchange of data. However, all this requires a great cybersecurity commitment-a commitment that must start with scholars in research and then reach the stakeholders. New devices and technological solutions are increasingly breaking into healthcare, and are able to change the processes of interaction in the health domain. This requires cybersecurity to become a vital part of patient safety through changes in human behaviour, technology, and processes, as part of a complete solution. All professionals involved in cybersecurity in the health domain were invited to contribute with their experiences. This book contains contributions from various experts and different fields. Aspects of cybersecurity in healthcare relating to technological advance and emerging risks were addressed. The new boundaries of this field and the impact of COVID-19 on some sectors, such as mhealth, have also been addressed. We dedicate the book to all those with different roles involved in cybersecurity in the health domain.
Occupational and Activity Analysis, Third Edition
Newly updated to reflect the Occupational Therapy Practice Framework: Domain and Process, Fourth Edition (OTPF-4), Occupational and Activity Analysis, Third Edition outlines the process of conducting occupational and activity analyses for occupational therapy students and clinicians. Occupational therapy practitioners use occupations and activities not only as a goal but also as a treatment medium, so understanding both the uniqueness of a client's occupations and how an activity can be used therapeutically is essential. This text is an introduction to both realms, first by explaining the process by which to peel back the layers of an occupation or activity to reveal its intricacy and then examining how to use this information for evaluation and intervention. Dr. Heather Thomas has updated Occupational and Activity Analysis, Third Edition to reflect the significant changes made to the activity analysis process and terminology in the OTPF-4. Conducting either an occupational or activity analysis investigates not only what is required for full participation but also looks at the meaning ascribed to it by the people, groups, or communities engaging in it and how personal and environmental contexts impact participation. What's new and included in the Third Edition: Chapters throughout the text have been updated to reflect the changes in the OTPF-4. Updated educational standards set by the Accreditation Council for Occupational Therapy Education (ACOTE) for doctoral and master's level and occupational therapy assistant programs. Additional cases and relevant clinical examples. Updated tables, boxes, and figures throughout. Expanded section on communication management. Appendices containing updated occupational and activity analysis forms. Example of a full activity analysis. Updated and added photos to help students understand concepts. Included with the text are online supplemental materials for faculty use in the classroom. As a foundational skill, occupational and activity analysis is utilized throughout students' careers and into their lives as practitioners, making Occupational and Activity Analysis, Third Edition the perfect textbook for the occupational therapy or occupational therapy assistant student, faculty, or clinician.

Occupational Wholeness for Health and Wellbeing
This practical book introduces a new, research-based model of occupational wholeness, a way of conceptualising satisfaction with what one does to meet needs for being, belonging and becoming. It explores how to: conceptualise people's life stories through the model; take vital steps to help identify any problems; draw personal profiles; introduce intervention strategies for promoting wellbeing. Focusing on enhancing wellbeing, rather than ill health, the concept of occupational wholeness supports people to feel more control of their own lives and helps to identify what balance can be created, while recognising personal limitations and environmental restrictions. Alongside theoretical background, it includes practice applications and practical tools, with scenarios and activities to consolidate learning. Providing a unique combination of the practice and theory of occupational science, Yazdani integrates occupational science, psychology and sociology with clinical experience of working with diverse groups of people in different countries. This book is an important guide and reference for occupational therapists, occupational scientists, counsellors and life coaches.
A Treatise on the Functional Pathology of the Musculoskeletal System
In this Treatise on the Functional Pathology of the Musculoskeletal System (FPMSS), Dr Brooks presents a new paradigm for understanding the musculoskeletal system and a scientifically valid-reliable, semiquantifiable, and consistently interpretable-method for examining dysfunction thereof. This first volume presents the fundamentals of the paradigm and is designed for use by a primary care audience. While the paradigm is applicable to the wide variety of clinical conditions potentially amenable to manual medicine and related rehabilitative techniques, this first volume takes chronic, nonspecific musculoskeletal pain syndromes as its focus for application. The FPMSS paradigm complements orthopedic, rheumatologic, and neurologic understandings of the musculoskeletal system and contrasts with current models of manual medicine in several important respects: Understands the musculoskeletal system (MSS) as an integrated organ systemDiscriminates questions about physiology from questions about anatomyDiscriminates questions about pathology from questions about physiologyDifferentiates functional pathology from structural pathologyAppreciates principles of scientifically valid nomenclature for function and dysfunction of musculoskeletal structures as components of an integrated systemRecognizes dysfunction of the musculoskeletal system as inefficient functionShifts the emphasis of examination for dysfunction from malalignment of structure/posture to disturbance of systemic movementDiscriminates control of posture and movement from imbalance of available motionGrades available motion deficits using the criterion of proportionality-not merely symmetry-thus revealing otherwise unappreciated dysfunction and allowing for prioritization and profilingPrioritizes mobilization interventions according to specified, ranked criteriaProfiles an individual's motion phenotype based upon patterns of available motion deficits, thus providing "precision" biomechanical medicineUse of the FPMSS paradigm examination will reduce the incidence of false negative and false positive findings for MSS dysfunction-thus improving the effectiveness, safety, and efficiency of caring for those suffering from chronic musculoskeletal pain.

Occupational Health Medical Directives and Nursing Procedures
These directives are designed to be used by nurses in an occupational health nursing program. These procedures outline the nurses' role in the handling of emergent and non-emergent situations in the occupational health care setting. As is the case with all occupational health "best practices", accurate documentation is of the utmost importance. There is a plethora of different onsite occupational health nursing services. Not every employer will use every available service. It is also important to note that some employers may have unique needs. It is not the purpose of this document to be all-encompassing or to substitute as a compendium of occupational health practice. Therefore, there may be times when an employer will request an occupational health nursing service that is not addressed within this guideline. When that occurs, the request should be submitted to the medical director for review. If appropriate, addenda to these guidelines regarding the specific request will be issued and are to be considered an extension of this document. In every instance, the recommendations contained within these guidelines are based upon evidence-based literature. It should be understood that in some areas, the evidence is weak or does not exist. In these instances, consensus recommendations are provided. It should be understood that health care is both art and science. Since it is ever-evolving, the recommendations contained within these guidelines may become obsolete or incorrect as new information is published. It is for this reason that these guidelines are to be reviewed at least on an annual basis.

Asian Medical Systems
Asian Medical Systems: A Comparative Study explores the enduring relevance and evolution of traditional medical practices in Asia, emphasizing their interplay with modern cosmopolitan medicine. The book examines three major medical traditions--Chinese, South Asian (Ayurveda), and Mediterranean (Yunani)--that developed independently yet share foundational principles such as humoral theories of balance and equilibrium. These systems, formalized between the fifth century B.C. and the fifth century A.D., established authoritative texts, professional standards, and ethical codes that continue to influence contemporary practices. Despite the dominance of cosmopolitan medicine, rooted in scientific advancements like germ theory and modern surgery, traditional medicine in many Asian countries coexists with modern approaches, supported by educational institutions, research bodies, and professional organizations. This pluralism is particularly evident in nations like China and India, where both systems are often integrated into healthcare delivery. The book highlights the pluralistic and adaptive nature of Asian medical systems, which provide insights into how traditional and modern practices complement each other. It challenges the perception of cosmopolitan medicine as uniquely scientific, arguing that Chinese, Ayurvedic, and Yunani systems also exhibit rational, systematic methods grounded in empirical observation and theory. By framing cosmopolitan medicine as "transcultural" rather than exclusively Western, the study underscores its global integration while recognizing the cultural, ecological, and social dimensions of health in Asia. Through multidisciplinary analysis, the work illuminates how medical systems evolve and intersect, offering a nuanced perspective on their coexistence and their potential for addressing contemporary health needs. This title is part of UC Press's Voices Revived program, which commemorates University of California Press's mission to seek out and cultivate the brightest minds and give them voice, reach, and impact.
