Foot Health Myths, Facts & Fables
Foot Health Myths, Facts & Fables 'Foot Health Myths' is an easy-to-read book that dips in and out of topics while reflecting upon the work of the podiatrist. This book is illustrated with 88 pictures, complete with references to sources contained within its 216 pages, divided into 7 chapters. Packed with anecdotes, often associated with the Greeks and Romans, that influenced the language of medicine, unknown facts emerge to astound. The reader is transformed between bizarre subjects, from trench foot to the foot in outer space, from bacterial to viral infections, from a Canadian trapper's flat feet to death from an infected toe in Australia. But, for the reader, what is true, false, or just a tall tale? For the layperson who wants a bit more academic detail, for the student seeking a career choice, or for the health care worker wanting insight into the matters of foot health medicine - it's all here! What readers have said "Beautifully conceived and flows with questions and answers at a level I can understand where everything is explained clearly. It is engaging and accessible without dwelling too long on anything. It is written in a style that doesn't talk down to me, not trying to impress, not dry and boring." Shaun Global "This is a fascinating book and even though you may not suffer personally from the many foot problems, it is written succinctly. Stuffed with an abundance of facts, supported by figures and data engrossing historical references, together with the origins of medical terminology, make for enlightened reading." Sid Gibson "Read this book, and you will find much about what it is to be human, not least the healthy dollops of sex and politics. This book will go a long way to dispel some snake oil fantasies that can cost the footsore so dear. I was utterly absorbed and enthralled by it." Professor Tim Kilmartin, "I found the book well researched, intriguing and loved the historical fable additions and anecdotes relating to humorous incidents and stories." Jane Clare, Podiatrist

Humanitarian Futures
Humanitarian Futures: Challenges and Opportunities explores the increasing types, dimensions and dynamics of crises threatening the world in the twenty-first century, and argues that those with humanitarian roles and responsibilities can only meet such challenges if their approaches to strategic and operational planning undergo fundamental paradigmatic shifts. Strategically and operationally, such shifts must begin by planning from the future, for the future.Author Randolph C. Kent, the UN's first Humanitarian Coordinator, with experience in some of the most complex crises of modern times, including Rwanda, Ethiopia, Kosovo, Sudan and Somalia, provides a blueprint for dealing with ever greater complexity on planet Earth and beyond. That blueprint is not about upgrading existing tools or relying upon tried precedence. Rather, it points to a new paradigm for meeting crises. It begins by looking at the changing nature of humanness and governance, and then turns to plausible future crises based on such changes, before concluding with practical steps for dealing with ever more complex humanitarian threats, now and in the future. This book will be an essential read for humanitarian policymakers and practitioners as well as for humanitarian and global studies researchers and students who are and want to be engaged in understanding and preparing for ever more complex and unpredictable humanitarian challenges.

Namikoshi Shiatsu Offical Technique
At the beginning of 20th Century, Tokujiro Namikoshi blended the wisdom of traditional Japanese massage with the bio-energetic principles of Chinese medicine and modern Western medicine's knowledge of Anatomy and Physiology. Presenting the results of his own research and discoveries, he created SHIATSU as an innovative discipline of hands-on massage therapy based on finger pressure. It is a term derived from the Japanese words 'shi' and 'atsu' meaning finger and pressure respectively. Since the fingers of the human hand have a greater number of sensory receptors than other regions of the body, they are extremely sensitive to contact. For this reason, the use of specialized machinery or conventional massage tools were excluded from SHIATSU's techniques, and even using other parts of the therapist's body is disapproved of; such as the fists or elbows, in order to concentrate on finger pressure as the therapy's primary tool.
