Alleviating Symptoms of EDS
This book is intended to address the more troubling symptoms of EDS that have been raised by patients with EDS. The most debilitating symptoms - as described to the author - are gastrointestinal symptoms, gastroparesis, pain and sleep disorders. These are addressed in some detail in this book but, of course they are not isolated from other symptoms and references to other symptoms, that afflict those with EDS, such as dysautonomia, will be examined. The author recommends that this book is used in conjunction with the book The EDS and Hypermobility Syndrome Diet Book since following this diet will ultimately improve the condition overall if it is followed. This book is intended to identify the underlying causes and treat the symptoms of EDS that exist during that time. As always, the author does not propose increasing prescribed medication to cope with symptoms. Bespoke nutrition is regenerating, not degenerating, so there should be less need for medication as time goes on. Besides, prescribed medication has so many side effects that much of the patient's medication is prescribed to reduce the side effects of the medication given in the first place. It is prescribed to mask symptoms and does not deal with the underlying cause. You will also be amazed at some of the causes of gastroparesis, which is very common in EDS, and begin to understand how to address it. What the author prescribes, in this book, is an understanding of the processes underpinning a disease and bespoke nutrition to address it. Some of the beneficial effects will be felt almost immediately and others will take time to manifest themselves but they will manifest themselves if the diet is adhered to. There is a life outside EDS and this book is intended to signpost you to it.

Anticipatory Ethics and the Use of Crispr in Humans
The future of gene editing in humans will involve the use of CRISPR. How we think about the combination of the scientific, ethical, and moral aspects of this technology is paramount to the success or failure of CRISPR in humans. Unfortunately, the current scientific discussion around CRISPR in humans has left ethics trailing behind due to the rapid pace of innovation. New modes of ethics and stakeholder participation are needed to keep pace with rapid scientific advances and provide the necessary policy and ethical frameworks necessary to help CRISPR flourish as an important health care tool to treat human disease. This requires intense interdisciplinary collaboration and discussion between scientists and philosophers, policymakers and legal scholars, and the public.Dr. Michael W. Nestor (a neuroscientist who actively uses CRISPR in pre-clinical research) and Professor Richard Wilson (a philosopher who focuses on anticipatory ethics) set out to develop a new ethical approachconsidering the use of CRISPR in human targeted therapies. The field of anticipatory ethics is uniquely poised to tackle questions in fast-evolving technical areas where the pace of innovation outstrips traditional philosophical approaches. Furthermore, because of its "anticipatory" nature, this type of analysis provides the opportunity to look ahead and into the future concerning potential uses of CRISPR in humans, uses that are not currently possible. Nestor and Wilson collaborate both scientifically and philosophically in this book to forecast potential outcomes as the scientific and medical community goes beyond using CRISPR to correct genes that underlie diseases where a single gene is involved. Instead, Nestor and Wilson envision CRISPR in complex, multigenic disorders with a specific focus on the use of CRISPR to edit genes involved in mental traits like IQ or other cognitive characteristics. They argue that the use of CRISPR to modify genes that are potentially important for mental traits represents a particular category for special consideration from scientists, policymakers, the public, and other stakeholders. Nestor and Wilson explain why using CRISPR to alter mental states is very different from treating a disease like cancer by combining the latest scientific advancements with anticipatory ethics and philosophical phenomenology. Their analysis considers the role that mental states play in personhood and the lived experience-as genes that can change mental/cognitive attributes like IQ have wide-ranging effects on the lived experience in ways that are categorically different from other attributes. It provides policy analysis and recommendations for assuring the most inclusive, equitable, and ethically sound use of CRISPR in humans, concerning its positive potential to treat mental conditions like depression, schizophrenia, Alzheimer's disease, autism, and the potential to induce other cognitive enhancements.

It bases this model on the concept of stress, rather than traditional theories such as qi and the five elements. A method of treatment is proposed which does not rely on traditional maps of meridians or the traditionally described functions of discrete acupuncture points.This revised third edition of Acupuncture: A Stress-Based Model contains a number of corrections and additions. On the one hand I had discovered a small number of inaccuracies in the first addition and on the other I have changed my mind about certain things. The additions concern relevant information from research, either new research or research about which I had hitherto been unaware. In particular I have added a new chapter on acupuncture point specificity, by which I mean the capacity for an acupuncture point to produce a range of distant or systemic effects that is distinct from those produced by other acupuncture points. I have also decided to leave out the entire first chapter of previous editions (about stress), on the basis that the subject matter is likely already to be familiar to most readers. The previous editions tried to be about both treating stress and presenting a paradigm in which acupuncture treatment in general is seen in terms of a stress response. Given the latter, the former now seems to me to be redundant. The other change in this edition is that I have sequenced and presented the material a little differently.
