Jewish Refugees and the British Nursing Profession
This book follows the lives of female Jewish refugees who fled Nazi persecution and became nurses. Nursing was nominally a profession but with its poor pay and harsh discipline, it was unpopular with British women. In the years preceding the Second World War, hospitals in Britain suffered chronic nurse staffing crises. As the country faced inevitable war, the Government and the profession's elite courted refugees as an antidote to the shortages, but many hospitals refused to employ Continental Jews. The book explores the changes in the refugees' status and lives from the war years to the foundation of the National Health Service and to the latter decades of the twentieth century. It places the refugees at the forefront of manoeuvres in nursing practice, education and research at a time of social upheaval and alterations in the position of women.

MATERNAL HEALTH; PREGNANCY, MORBIDITY, and MORTALITY
The target audience for MATERNAL HEALTH; PREGNANCY, MORBIDITY, and MORTALITY: Volume 1, is for women who are or plan to become pregnant. For an easy comprehension, the book layout follows a unique order of events. Unfolding, in its 18 chapters is a true story of a first time pregnancy with a traumatic and painful cesarean delivery; whereas the epidural anesthesia nor the additional sedation failed to have worked. She felt increased pain and pressure (as her fascial incision was grasped with the Kocher clamps and sharply and bluntly dissected); before, during and after the delivery. All the while she suffered with severe eclampsia and was treated with Magnesium Sulfate to lower blood pressure and Betamethasone to develop the infant lungs due to a intra-uterine growth restriction resulting in a preterm birth. According to The Mayo Clinic, "It's common that someone who's sedated may be aware for part or all of the procedure. Although very rare. Estimates vary, but about 1 or 2 people in every 1,000 may experience unintended intra-operative and even rarer to experience pain." General anesthesia - Mayo Clinic. (2023, February 16). https: //www.mayoclinic.org/tests-procedures/anesthesia/about/pac-20384568 Also, find out how to read a medical record and medical report findings to help women and expected mothers make life-informed decisions of their own. THE MATERNAL HEALTH; PREGNANCY, MORBIDITY, and MORTALITY introduction sets the stage for a dramatic read that is truly unreal.
Legends Leaders Pioneers
Vascular surgery is an extraordinary success story. The ability to reliably repair, modify or replace human blood vessels is very recent on the long timeline of surgical history. In this book an important part of the story is told through the interview recollections of more than 90 prominent vascular surgeons who helped to guide and pioneer the process. Dr. Yao's and Dr. McCarthy's text highlights ten years of video interviewing with surgeons from the United States and around the world. The interviews were conducted by a Society for Vascular Surgery committee called The History Project Work Group. The reader will meet these interviewed surgeons face-to-face, each in an individual one-hour in-depth video conversation with a committee member. In this book a detailed biography is provided for each individual, and most importantly, the actual interview can easily be immediately accessed by scanning the QR code at the bottom of the page. Dr. Yao was the visionary project initiator and leader beginning in 2011, and Dr. McCarthy became the project chairman in 2018. Within this book are first-hand accounts of tremendous technical surgical advances, new devices and prosthetic materials, magnificent careers, fascinating personalities, hard-fought failures, and many tales of wartime vascular surgery. Surgeons in practice or training, historians and loved ones alike will find much of interest here.
Medical and surgical management of Myasthenia Gravis
Myasthenia gravis (MG) is an autoimmune disease affecting the neuromuscular junction, responsible for the production of autoantibodies against acetylcholine receptors in striated skeletal muscle. This is responsible for the appearance of fluctuating muscular fatigue which, when generalized, can be life-threatening. The association of myasthenia seen in thymic pathology was first described in 1901 by Laquer, and medical treatment (essentially including drugs to increase neuromuscular transmission, immunosuppressants, immunoglobulins, monoclonal antibodies or plasma exchange) is often combined with surgical management to achieve simple or enlarged thymectomy. The earlier a patient undergoes thymectomy, the better the outcome in terms of post-thymectomy morbidity and mortality. This book outlines the medical and surgical management of MG.
Healthy Longevity without Dementia
With our medical advances and knowledge, people are living a much longer life. But, longevity without accompanying good health is not desirable, and actually miserable. Dementia is a frightening word, causing anxiety, uncertainty, and often despair. The population of the older people is increasing exponentially, resulting is more and more cases of dementia being diagnosed because age is a known risk factor for dementia, unfortunately. Without strong, bold, and proactive countermeasures by governments, dementia will rock the global healthcare system, not just in the United States, causing much pain and suffering to our society including the patients and their loved ones and caregivers. The social impact of dementia is just too great to ignore!

Osteoporosis - Pathophysiology, Diagnosis, Management and Therapy
Osteoporosis is defined as a systemic bone loss disease exemplified by the deterioration of bone tissues and low bone mineral density (BMD), subsequently leading to an enhanced risk of developing fragility-related fractures. It's a chronic inflammatory condition and is the 4th most burdensome chronic disease after ischemic heart disease, dementia, and lung cancer, with a huge economic burden on the world economy. This skeletal disorder affects predominantly women compared to men, and the risk increases with age. Although currently available therapies to treat osteoporosis are effective, side effects (real and perceived) are impediments to treatment adherence by the patients. Thus, there is an exigent need for renewed interest in managing osteoporosis with a better understanding of the pathophysiology, diagnosis, and treatment regime so that safer and more effective management and treatment modalities can be developed. Research in the last decade has led to enormous interest in the pathophysiology of osteoporosis. Importantly, the immune system is now an established player in the development of osteoporosis (Immunoporosis). Also, various off-the-track management and treatment approaches (probiotics, Synbiotics, FMT, etc.) are now being considered for managing osteoporosis. The present edited book will compile the latest trends and knowledge in the field, thereby creating a novel knowledge database for effective and efficient management and therapy of osteoporosis.

Acinetobacter baumannii - The Rise of a Resistant Pathogen
Acinetobacter baumannii is a formidable global pathogen notorious for its widespread drug-resistant nature. It is a major culprit in various infections, particularly targeting immunocompromised individuals in intensive care units (ICUs). A paramount concern associated with this pathogen lies in its remarkable ability to develop resistance to nearly all clinically utilized antibiotics. Furthermore, it exhibits a concerning propensity to disseminate this resistance rapidly, transcending borders and impacting healthcare facilities across diverse economic strata. Of particular focus is the carbapenem-resistant strain of A. baumannii (CRAb). This strain has garnered the top spot on the World Health Organization's (WHO) list of pathogens, necessitating urgent attention for new treatment development. This book delves into numerous studies underscoring the pivotal role of A. baumannii as one of the most impactful bacteria contributing to Healthcare-Associated Infections (HAIs) within the contemporary healthcare landscape.
Preventive Measures for Viral Hepatitis B and C
With an estimated 8-10 million people living with viral hepatitis in Egypt and millions more at risk for infection, viral hepatitis is among the most significant public health problems facing this country. Most morbidity and mortality result from the chronic form of viral hepatitis, which is caused by hepatitis B virus (HBV) and hepatitis C virus (HCV) infections.Hepatitis B virus (HBV) and hepatitis C virus (HCV) infections cause morbidity and mortality in dialysis patients. Prolonged vascular exposure and multiple blood transfusions increase the risk of acquiring these blood-borne infections in these patients. The risk for patients to become HBV positive increases 1.47 times each month of dialysis-contaminated devices, equipment, and supplies; environmental surfaces; and attending personnel may also play a crucial role in the nosocomial transmission of these infections.
Hand Hygiene
Most healthcare associated infections are thought to be transmitted by the hands of health care workers. It has long been known that hand hygiene among health care workers plays a central role in preventing the transmission of infectious agents. Hand washing is the most effective way of preventing the spread of infectious diseases. Hand hygiene is a core element of patient safety for the prevention of Hospital Acquired Infections (HAIs) and spread of anti microbial resistance. Alcohol Based Hand Rub (ABHR) may be better than traditional hand washing as they require less time, acts faster, are less irritating, and contribute to sustained improvement in compliance associated with decreased infection rates.Hand hygiene is the most simple, most effective measure for preventing HAIs. Despite advances in infection control and hospital epidemiological, Semmelweis' message is not consistently translated in to clinical practice, and HCWs adherence to recommended hand hygiene practice is unacceptably low. Compliance with hand hygiene recommendations is the most important measure in preventing health care-associated infections.
Pain in palliative care
Pain assessment and control are crucial aspects of palliative care, aimed at improving the quality of life of patients with serious advanced illnesses, particularly tumour diseases. Pain control is a priority in cancer care and requires multidisciplinary assessment and management. Older adults are targets of polypharmacy and inappropriate prescription, and self-medication with psychoactive substances is a potential risk for them. A descriptive, cross-sectional study was conducted in 2021 with the aim of proposing actions focused on reducing the consumption of psychotropic drugs in older adults at the 21st Medical Clinic. In 66.1% of the patients, it was found that they were unaware of the risks of psychotropic drug use in the elderly. A proposal of actions was designed to increase the knowledge of the elderly about the risks of these drugs and to promote intersectoriality for the realization of entertainment activities to get out of the daily routine, relax and avoid stress and practice other alternatives to reduce the consumption of psychotropic drugs.
Manual of Histological Techniques and Histological and Ultrastructural Features of Some Endocrine Glands
Histology, branch of biology concerned with the structure of plant and animal tissues in relation to their specialized functions. This term came into usage in the 1700s by the scientist Marie Fran癟ois Xavier Bichat who is considered to be the father of modern histology and descriptive anatomy. Histologists mainly examine the tissue that have been removed from the living body, cut into very thin transparent slices (using a special cutting instrument, the microtome and may then be stained with various dyes, and specifically with the H & E stain, to increase the contrast so that the cells can be more easily resolved using an optical microscope. Ultra structure (or ultra-structure) is the architecture of cells and biomaterials that is visible at higher magnifications than found on a optical light microscope. In 1931, German engineers, Max Knoll and Ernst Ruska invented the first electron microscope. This traditionally meant the resolution and magnification range of a conventional transmission electron microscope (TEM) when viewing biological specimens such as cells, tissue, or organs. The Science of Endocrinology deals with the study of Endocrine glands. The Author of this Book has tried to assemble the histological and ultrastructural details of the major endocrine glands with the contribution of Scientists related with these topics. Hope this will be a immense help to the Researchers in recognizing the structural details with the particular functions of the tissues.
The Human Disease
How the very fact of being human makes us vulnerable to pandemics--and gives us the power to save ourselves. The COVID-19 pandemic won't be our last--because what makes us vulnerable to pandemics also makes us human. That is the uncomfortable but all-too-timely message of The Human Disease, which travels through history and around the globe to examine how and why pandemics are an inescapable threat of our own making. Drawing on dozens of disciplines--from medicine, epidemiology, and microbiology to anthropology, sociology, ecology, and neuroscience--as well as a unique expertise in public education about pandemic risks, biological anthropologist Sabrina Sholts identifies the human traits and tendencies that double as pandemic liabilities, from the anatomy that defines us to the misperceptions that divide us. Weaving together a wealth of personal experiences, scientific findings, and historical stories, Sholts brings dramatic and much-needed clarity to one of the most profound challenges we face as a species. Though the COVID-19 pandemic looms large in Sholts's account, it is, in fact, just one of the many infectious disease events explored in The Human Disease. With its expansive, evolutionary perspective, the book explains how humanity will continue to face new pandemics because humans cause them, by the ways that we are and the things that we do. By recognizing our risks, Sholts suggests, we can take actions to reduce them. When the next pandemic happens, and how bad it becomes, are largely within our highly capable human hands--and will be determined by what we do with our extraordinary human brains.

Green Banana Flour Cookie
Celiac disease (CD) is an autoimmune enteropathy caused by permanent intolerance to gluten in genetically predisposed individuals, which causes damage to the mucosa of the small intestine, reducing the absorption of essential nutrients for the proper functioning of the body. It affects 0.3 to 1% of the world's population and around 0.89% of the Brazilian population. It is estimated that the prevalence of celiac disease affects around 300,000 people in Brazil. Of every eight people with the disease, only one is diagnosed. Currently, the only form of treatment for CD is the total and permanent removal of gluten from the diet. However, the greatest difficulty in feeding coeliacs is access to products made with gluten-free ingredients that have sensory characteristics that are pleasing to the consumer. The gluten-free products available on the market are not produced on a large scale, are expensive and become inaccessible to the less economically favored social classes. The aim of this study was to produce gluten-free cookies from green banana flour as an alternative for people with celiac disease.

Twisting appendices
Adnexal torsion is a gynecological surgical emergency, its pathogenesis is multifactorial and remains poorly elucidated, but it seems that the keystone of all these mechanisms is the existence of an adnexal mass.A retrospective study of 60 cases of patients admitted for adnexal torsion at the Monastir Gynecology-Obstetrics Department from January 1, 2017 to January 31, 2022, revealed that this pathology represents 14.93% of all gynecological emergencies.
Acute Myeloid Leukemia
Acute myeloblastic leukemias (AML) constitute between 15% and 20% of leukemias in pediatric patients. In order to describe patients diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia in the remission induction stage, a descriptive, cross-sectional study was carried out in patients diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia at the University Pediatric Hospital "Jos矇 Luis Miranda" of Santa Clara. We worked with 24 patients. Almost all of them presented anemia, leukocytosis and thrombocytopenia. The main complications were sepsis and febrile neutropenia, which showed no association with sex or age of the patients. Hyperleukocytosis was present in obese patients and cardiotoxicity predominated in overweight and obese patients.
Phase Angle, Nutritional Status and Clinical Outcomes in Oncology
Currently, different nutritional assessment tools are used in surgical oncology patients in clinical-hospital practice, which can result in different malnutrition prevalence rates. This can influence the interpretation of the association between nutritional status and adverse clinical outcomes in this population. Standardised Phase Angle (SFA) has aroused great interest in recent decades, as it is an objective, rapid and non-invasive method, obtained directly using Electrical Bioimpedance (EBI). This parameter derives from the relationship between reactance (resistive capacitance of cell membranes) and resistance (pure opposition of the biological conductor to the electric current), which body tissues offer to the passage of a low-intensity electric current. In general, low AFP values are associated with negative health outcomes in surgical oncology patients. It is therefore important to assess the association between AFP and nutritional status, provided by different tools, and to relate it to post-operative clinical outcomes in this population.
Functional Independence for People with Paraplegia
Spinal cord injury can lead to limitations for the individual, but a rehabilitation programme that assesses functional gain allows monitoring throughout the course of rehabilitation. The aim of this study was to assess the results obtained by applying the Functional Independence Measure to people with paraplegia undergoing a rehabilitation programme. To this end, a quantitative, cross-sectional, retrospective, descriptive study was carried out, analysing 228 medical records and the scores obtained using the FIM Scale. Analyses were carried out using specific tests using SPSS software, version 13 for Windows. The results showed that, among the variables studied, there was a direct relationship between age, time since injury, motor level, length of hospitalisation and hospitalisation with a companion and gain in independence (p

Neurological Birdsong
"The medical history is complex data, waiting for clinical interpretation.Even a poem is a type of data." As a celebrated neurologist, Doctor Andrew Lees has been collecting and interpreting medical data for decades, and as an accomplished author and frequent tweeter, he has developed a keen ability to capture his thoughts succinctly. Now, in this book, he documents a career's worth of insights by reformulating his most profound tweets into poetic form. The aphorisms collected here touch on a host of related topics, from the right approach to diagnosis to the importance of a "soulful neurology" in the art of healing. They will interest everyone: the suffering patient, the young doctor or nurse, maybe even a health care bureaucrat. Neurological Birdsong is the beautiful expression of one doctor's wisdom. A.J. Lees has written many books, including Brainspotting: Adventures in Neurology and Mentored by a Madman: The William Burroughs Experiment. He takes long walks in London and continues his tweeting career @AJLees.
'Everyday Health', Embodiment, and Selfhood Since 1950
What is the history of 'everyday health' in the postwar world, and where might we find it? This volume moves away from top-down histories of health and medicine that focus on states, medical professionals, and other experts. Instead, it centres the day-to-day lives of people in diverse contexts from 1950 to the present. Chapters explore how gender, class, 'race', sexuality, disability, and age mediated experiences of health and wellbeing in historical context. The volume foregrounds methodologies for writing bottom-up histories of health, subjectivity, and embodiment, offering insights applicable to scholars of times and places beyond those represented in the case studies presented here. Drawing together cutting-edge scholarship, the volume establishes and critically interrogates 'everyday health' as a crucial concept that will shape future histories of health and medicine.
