Schizophrenia A Diagnosis Looking for a Cause and a Cure Your Seventh Psychiatric Consultation William Yee M.D., J.D. Copyright Applied for 01/19/2020
The basic science of the diagnosis and treatment of schizophrenia is described from the point of view of this practitioner at the point of service with the client. I have been at the point of service since 1970 as a medical student, since 1972 as an intern, since 1973 as a licensed medical doctor, and since 1977 as a board-certified psychiatrist. The practice of psychiatry changes from place to place, and from time to time. Administrators and chain of command are at arm's length, or more than arm's length, with a different point of view. Pharmaceutical companies conduct themselves on a different platform with different rules of engagement. The many, "stakeholders," conduct themselves on many platforms with many differing rules of engagement. Thank you for your time and attention. I am here to do no harm, and to help if I can. Presenting the First Test-Tube Baby
In January 1979, Robert Edwards and Patrick Steptoe delivered a lecture detailing the ten-year clinical and scientific research programme that led to the birth of Louise Brown, the first baby born utilising IVF. This thoroughly-researched book provides both a full annotated transcript of the lecture as well as recorded reminiscences from those who attended, detailing the contemporary understandings of the event. An essay on the lecture's historical context adds fresh insight into the biographies of Edwards and Steptoe and highlights sources from print and broadcast media that have received scant attention in earlier publications. Current and future implications of the advances in IVF since the first procedure are also explored, examining future medical and scientific possibilities as well as ethical issues that may arise. A foreword by Louise Brown herself places this remarkable leap of science in a personal context, one that so many families have since experienced themselves.
Walking Corpses
In Walking Corpses, Timothy S. Miller and John W. Nesbitt contextualize reactions to leprosy in medieval Western Europe by tracing its history in Late Antique Byzantium, which had been confronting leprosy and its effects for centuries. Integrating developments in both the Latin West and the Greek East, Walking Corpses challenges a number of misperceptions about attitudes toward the disease, including that theologians branded leprosy as punishment for sin (rather, it was seen as a mark of God's favor); that Christian teaching encouraged bans on the afflicted from society (in actuality, it was Germanic customary law); or that leprosariums were prisons (instead, they were centers of care, many of them self-governing). Informed by extensive archival research and recent bioarchaeology, Walking Corpses also includes new translations of three Greek texts regarding leprosy, while a new preface to the paperback edition updates the historiography on medieval perceptions and treatments of leprosy.

The book is an update on contentious or unsettled issues concerning invasive diagnostic and therapeutic challenges in cancer and related disorders, focusing on the surgical approach. Topics include recommendations for the best practice in using the surgery safety checklist, surgical strategies in a variety of thoracic cancers, renal cell carcinoma, tumors of parathyroid glands, mesothelioma, and bariatric surgeries. General Psychotherapy
This book highlights common similarities between the various schools of psychotherapy. It provides psychotherapists with the underlying neurophysiological, developmental psychological and relationship-oriented matrix (basic needs and their regulation, deficits, trauma and conflict processing patterns, including accompanying exercises) as well as opportunities for healing correction and stabilisation - and the ways in which to apply these methods in a therapeutically mindful way for the benefit of the patient. The new university-based psychotherapy training covers the four fundamental schools of psychotherapy, i.e. the previous standard approaches plus the systemic and humanistic ones. Focusing on the common ground builds bridges of understanding and encourages collaboration. This expanded, new range of methods to access patients constitutes a substantial development in the field of psychotherapy and will also influence the psychotherapy practice of experienced colleagues. Written for medical and psychological psychotherapists, psychosomatic doctors, psychiatrists and other specialists with additional psychotherapeutic qualifications, and for students of psychotherapy.
The Global Biopolitics of the IUD
The biography of a multifaceted technological object, the IUD, illuminates how political contexts shaped contraceptive development, marketing, use, and users. The intrauterine device (IUD) is used by 150 million women around the world. It is the second most prevalent method of female fertility control in the global South and the third most prevalent in the global North. Over its five decades of use, the IUD has been viewed both as a means for women's reproductive autonomy and as coercive tool of state-imposed population control, as a convenient form of birth control on a par with the pill and as a threat to women's health. In this book, Chikako Takeshita investigates the development, marketing, and use of the IUD since the 1960s. She offers a biography of a multifaceted technological object through a feminist science studies lens, tracing the transformations of the scientific discourse around it over time and across different geographies. Takeshita describes how developers of the IUD adapted to different social interests in their research and how changing assumptions about race, class, and female sexuality often guided scientific inquiries. The IUD, she argues, became a "politically versatile technology," adaptable to both feminist and nonfeminist reproductive politics because of researchers' attempts to maintain the device's suitability for women in both the developing and the developed world. Takeshita traces the evolution of scientists' concerns--from contraceptive efficacy and product safety to the politics of abortion--and describes the most recent, hormone-releasing, menstruation-suppressing iteration of the IUD. Examining fifty years of IUD development and use, Takeshita finds a microcosm of the global political economy of women's bodies, health, and sexuality in the history of this contraceptive device.
The Dark Side of Aesthetics
Understanding the intricacies of each ethnic group's common skin conditions and the challenge of limiting risk factors, such as post inflammatory hyperpigmentations, is crucial to today's skincare professional. In the United States, the proportion of the population with diverse skin tones, which includes those of Asian, South Asian, Hispanic, Mediterranean, Middle Eastern, and African descents, is increasing. The severity of 2nd and 3rd degree burns using advanced chemical peels is astounding, especially for diverse skin tones that are rich in melanin and have a higher risk to hyperpigmentation. To be a skincare expert in today's changing landscape, you must understand Global skins. Because many skin therapists do not seek training to learn the variables of product usage on diverse skin tones, they do more harm than good to their clients. From time to time, I surf the web for ongoing skin care challenges; many of which are frequently seen on Instagram and Tik Tok. On one such occasion I saw photos of Symone, a beautiful woman of African descent. She was a skin therapist's client, who had suffered from 2nd degree burns and an acquired fungus infection of her face due to an improper peel treatment. I was troubled by the amount of damage to Symone's skin, and I felt compelled to write The Dark Side of Aesthetics: Hyperpigmentation, Chemical Peels, and Complications.

Psychiatry on the Stage
Psychology and theater have often intersected in the most interesting ways to describe characters, situations, and interactions. Neuroscience is in the process of discovering how the brain longs for patterns that we find in theater and other art forms, and practitioners in psychiatry frequently refer to literature and drama to better understand patients. For instance, the Oedipal complex was first illustrated in Sophocles' Oedipus Rex, and Sigmund Freud largely derived his understanding of psychiatric complexes from his familiarity with Greek mythology. Psychiatry on the Stage presents an overview of basic psychiatric principles applied to plays from the Greeks to modern times. Additional features include illustrative vignettes from the author's practice and several detailed indexes comprised of plays, corresponding playwrights, and various psychiatric and neurological disorders. As a board-certified psychiatrist and playwright, Dr. Berman is uniquely qualified to explore the connections between psychiatry and theater. This book is sure to appeal to both practitioners in the field of psychiatry and theater enthusiasts alike.

Written by leading experts in various disciplines, the chapters draw on the authors' experience to critically evaluate relevant data on diagnosing and treating the disease and provide guidance on the optimal approach in each specific situation as well as on how to decide between alternatives. A series of learning objectives, tables, figures, algorithms and illustrations increase the book's readability and help readers improve their understanding of the material. This book serves as a practical and useful tool for general obstetricians, fetal-maternal specialists, endocrinologists, diabetologists, neonatologists, midwives and for anyone involved in the management of pregnant women with this condition.

Spinal Cord Stimulation 2nd Edition
Neuromodulation therapies such as spinal cord, dorsal root ganglion, and peripheral nerve stimulation are used to treat chronic pain syndromes such as intractable back pain, diabetic neuropathy, spinal radiculopathies, and complex regional pain syndrome. Since the publication of the first edition over a decade ago, there has been unprecedented progress in understanding neuromodulation and technological advances in clinical applications. Spinal Cord Stimulation is intended as an essential guide to the clinical fundamentals required for safe and effective implantation of neuromodulation devices. Implantation of these devices is performed by physicians from various disciplines, requiring a multidisciplinary skill set that presents a challenge for surgical and non-surgical pain practitioners alike. This authoritative resource integrates the basic multidisciplinary information necessary for understanding spinal cord stimulation, dorsal root ganglion (DRG), and peripheral nerve stimulation (PNS) with up-to-date implantation techniques for clinicians to use in their daily practice. It also features updated advice for appropriate medical decision making, patient education, safe use of radiation, and managing adverse events, with new chapters dedicated toward DRG stimulation and PNS.
Manual Therapy for Voice and Swallowing - A Person-Centered Approach
At the heart of this new book is a departure from the norm of expert clinician directing anatomically-based and traditional treatment regimes. Instead, Walt Fritz presents a scenario wherein the client, as an equal, is leading the clinician, through responses to questions, to behaviors, and to touch. This shared decision-making approach questions and challenges existing manual therapy practice and in the words of the Author, aims to '...introduce to you an updated mechanism of action to explain MT effects and then turn to intervention. If you are currently using MT in your practice for voice, swallowing, breathing, oral-motor, or other related issues, the material presented here may challenge what you've been taught...'Eminently practical and profusely illustrated with clear, step-by-step images and text, the Author presents evaluation guidelines, conditions that lend themselves to manual therapy, along with specific and in-depth interventions.

The Clinician in the Psychiatric Diagnostic Process
The vast majority of mental health clinicians and researchers rely on diagnostic systems based on operational criteria. However, in their everyday practice, many clinicians also pay attention to their own feelings or intuitions about the patient. For an even greater number of clinicians, this process may occur inadvertently. Scholars from various fields are increasingly stressing the importance of complementing the emphasis on operational criteria with thoughtful attention to the subjective and intersubjective elements involved in a thorough psychopathological evaluation. This book aims at capturing the essence, implications and full potential of the clinician's subjective experience in the diagnosis and treatment of mental disorders. It gathers contributions from several different disciplines, such as phenomenology, neuroscience, the cognitive sciences, and psychoanalysis. It also presents the development, validation, and clinical application of a psychometric instrument that reliably investigates the clinician's feelings, thoughts, and perceptions related to the clinical encounter.

Axial Spondyloarthritis and Ankylosing Spondylitis
Ankylosing spondylitis (AS), currently grouped under the term axial spondyloarthritis (axSpA), is a chronic form of arthritis that causes inflammatory back pain and can gradually result in impaired spinal mobility. It can also cause eye inflammation (uveitis), arthritis of limb joints, inflammation at sites of bony attachments of tendons and ligaments (enthesitis), and associated psoriasis and inflammatory bowel disease. No cure has yet been found; however, early diagnosis and proper medical and lifestyle management are very important in reducing the risk of deformity and disability. Written by a leading expert on the subject who himself has been living with AS since age 12, this book provides clear and practical information on the clinical symptoms and signs, underlying causes, genetic predisposition, diagnosis, treatments, and impact on daily life. The combination of scientific knowledge and personal experience results in a unique book which will prove invaluable for patients and their families and friends, as well as allied health professionals and students wishing to know more about the condition. The second edition has been fully updated to cover the tremendous advancements made in the clinical recognition and effective management since the first edition in 2002. It also includes a glossary of medical terms and links to sources of further information to give patients the tools they need to understand and manage the condition effectively.

Fads and Fallacies in Psychiatry
This text examines the fads and fallacies, both past and present, that have plagued psychiatric diagnosis, treatments and research. It argues that such practices have led to an over-diagnosis of conditions such as depression, bipolar disorder, ADHD, PTSD and autism. It examines the over-treatment of psychiatric disorders with pharmaceuticals, and asks if neuroscience will actually hold the answers to the biggest questions in the field. Thoroughly updated in light of new research, this new edition addresses some of the more recent developments in psychiatry, including behavioural genetics, genome-wide association studies, and brain imaging. It looks at new advances in psychotherapies and argues for a broad biopsychosocial model. The book will inform psychiatrists, clinical psychologists, other mental health professionals, and medical students of the limits of mental health practice and the importance of adopting cautious conservatism and the principles of evidence-based practice.

The Suicidal Crisis
Most people who die by suicide see a clinician prior to taking their lives. Therefore, one of the most difficult determinations clinicians must be able to make is whether any given patient is at risk for suicide in the immediate future. The Suicidal Crisis, Clinical Guide to the Assessment of Imminent Suicide Risk, is the first book written specifically to help clinicians evaluate the risk of such imminent suicidal behavior. The Suicidal Crisis is an essential work for every mental health professional and for anyone who would like to have a framework for understanding suicide. Written by master clinician Dr. Igor Galynker, the book presents methods for a systematic and comprehensive assessment of short-term suicide risk and for conducting risk assessment interviews in different settings. Dr. Galynker describes suicide as an attempt of a vulnerable individual to escape an unbearable life situation, which is perceived as both intolerable and inescapable. What sets the Suicidal Crisis apart from the other books of its kind is its sharp focus on those at the highest risk. It presents a wealth of clinical material within the easy-to-understand and intuitive framework of the Narrative-Crisis model of suicidal behavior. The book contains sixty individual case studies of actual suicidal individuals and their interviews, detailed instructions on how to conduct such interviews, and risk assessment test cases with answer keys. A unique feature of the book, not found in any other book on suicide, is a discussion of how clinicians' emotional responses to acutely suicidal individuals may help identify those at highest risk. In this timely and extensively updated edition Galynker provides a method for understanding the suicidal process, and of identifying those at the highest risk for taking their lives. Any clinician who works with suicidal individuals and anybody who knows someone who has considered suicide will find the book an essential and illuminating read.
