'All Manner of Industry and Ingenuity'
This book celebrates the quatercentenary of the birth of Thomas Willis on 27 January 1621. As a physician in Oxford, Willis's work in the 1650s provides an example of rural medical practice in early modern England. As a member of the Oxford Philosophical Club that met from the 1640s, he was central to the move from classical scholasticism to accounts of anatomy and physiology based on observation and experiment. As Sedleian professor of natural philosophy in Oxford, the surviving records of his lectures from the 1660s provide an example of pedagogy in medicine at that time. And, after moving to London in 1667, Willis continued to interact with a community of scientists and physicians who transformed ideas on respiration, muscular movement and the nervous system. Despite a busy clinical practice, Willis found time to write extensively on anatomy and physiology, clinical medicine and therapeutics. These contributions are recognized as wise, original and influential. Between 1659 and 1675, Willis published fourteen treatises. These appeared in six published works, one in two parts, written in Latin. Four of the titles contain engraved plates depicting the brain, muscle, lungs and stomach. The illustrators were Christopher Wren, Richard Lower, Edmund King and possibly Willis himself. Soon after his death, the treatises were published as collected works, also in Latin. Starting in 1679, his writings were translated into English and published as Dr Willis's practice of physic, eventually completed in 1684. The eighteen chapters of this bio-bibliography are in four sections: chapter 1 is biographical; chapters 2 - 4 describe aspects of the history of the book and illustration relevant to Willis's printed works; chapters 5 - 14 provide bibliographical details of Willis's treatises contained in 102 copies printed in Latin, English, Dutch and French between 1659 and 1721; and chapters 15 - 18 summarise the content of Willis's works and their contribution to medical science.

Microcirculation in Cardiovascular Diseases
This book offers an extensive review of the most recent data on the pathophysiological role of structural and functional alterations in the microcirculation, particularly focusing on hypertension and diabetes. It covers several relevant and innovative aspects, including the possible mechanisms involved in the development of microvascular remodeling and rarefaction, the technical approaches available for the detection of microvascular alterations, including non-invasive evaluations, the prognostic role of changes in small resistance artery structure, the possibility of preventing or regressing such alterations with appropriate treatment, and the potential clinical advantages of such intervention. A number of innovative areas of research are considered, including the role of the immune system, inflammation and oxidative stress in the development of microvascular alterations. The debate over the advantages of the routine cultural circumcision is still ongoing with a significant dichotomy between the opinions of the experts in the field. The main purpose of this book is to present a discussion on the pros and cons of the non-medical male circumcision from a public health point of view, and to raise awareness about the potential complications of this procedure.
Pneumothorax
This book aims at reviewing contemporary publications on the subject of the pneumothorax. Although depigmented patches may not matter in Caucasians, it is very serious for pigmented skin.Depigmentation can also be a therapeutic goal for cosmetic treatment. Many vitiligo patients who received depigmentation treatment experienced paradoxical jealousy because of their clean white skin. To improve facial blemishes, many people spend their money on laser, chemical peel, and cosmetic treatments. In this book, we focus on two opposite sides of depigmentation: diseases of depigmentation and therapeutic depigmentation presented by global experts.
Microangiopathy
Microangiopathies are pathological processes causing degenerative disorders of small vessels. The circulatory problems caused by microangiopathies may be responsible for failure of individual or multiple organs. These pathological processes are indeed one of the most common disorders characterized by high morbility and mortality in the affected patients. Many studies have revealed very complicated processes both at cellular and molecular level. However, much work remains to define the diversity of different pathogenetic mechanisms leading to microangiopathic disorders to provide appropriate prevention and treatment strategies. The aim of this volume is providing illustrative examples of relevant mechanisms responsible for different forms of microangiopathies and how this body of evidences can be harnessed to define new strategies of therapeutic intervention.
Pelvic Floor Disorders
Pelvic floor disorders, which include urinary and fecal incontinence and pelvic organ prolapse, are highly prevalent conditions in women. In the United States alone, this affects almost 25% of women. These disorders often affect women's daily life activities, their sexual function, their ability to exercise, and their social and psychological life. Pelvic floor disorders are usually diagnosed clinically, but in complicated cases, pelvic imaging and electromyographic studies may be required. This book attempts to discuss the pathophysiology of pelvic floor disorders, its treatment by the use of a new synthetic material, and treatment for recurrent POP. Although there are many books available on this topic, it includes some of the original research work and surgical innovation. Pituitary Adenomas is a comprehensive book about the most common pathology of the pituitary gland in the sellar region. The book chapters include epidemiology, symptoms and signs, clinical, imaging, immunohistochemical and ultrastructural pathological diagnosis, therapeutic approaches and outcome of the functional and non-functional pituitary tumors. Therapies include medications, endoscopic transphenoidal and open surgeries; radiotherapy includes gamma knife radiosurgery. Diseases of Pleura
Pleural diseases are usually accompanied by pulmonary or nonpulmonary (heart, kidney, thyroid, systemic) diseases. Rarely, pleural diseases are solitary lesions. Pleural effusions are frequent manifestations of pleural diseases. Their treatment depends on the cause of effusion. Tuberculous and nontuberculous inflammation of pleura cause effusion as well as benign and malignant tumors. Talc treatment is one of the modalities of therapy for pleural effusions. Asbestosis is still the leading cause of pleural tumors. A solitary fibrous tumor of pleura is a mesenchymal tumor with various morphological patterns but with a consistent immunophenotype. A high proliferative index requires frequent follow-up because of possibe relapse and mandatory oncological treatment. A pleural malignant mesothelioma is aggressive and is the most frequent tumor of mesothelial origin.
