Esophageal Cancer and Beyond
Human life relies on two basic supplies from nature: oxygen and food. Oxygen can be utilized directly, but food has to go through a process of digestion to become usable nutrients. The esophagus represents the beginning of this long journey. Because of its critical location, esophageal cancer is one of the deadliest malignancies in the world, and furthermore its incidence has been rising steadily year after year while other cancers are declining. It is predicted that by the year 2035 the esophageal cancer population will increase by 77.4% and become one of top global concerns. This book covers many aspects of esophageal cancer, through which we hope to raise the awareness of professionals as well as non-professionals about this disease.
Selected Topics in Breastfeeding
Breastfeeding is a cornerstone of child nutrition and the growth and development of children. In addition, it generates other multiple benefits for both child and mother. Consequently, it has been recognized as a strategy of promotion and protection of the main health for different countries across the world. However, despite the strong evidence of its benefits and the public health policies being implemented to promote breastfeeding, the prevalence of exclusive breastfeeding at the sixth month does not reach the recommendations of many countries. Selected Topics in Myasthenia Gravis
Myasthenia gravis is a rare potentially fatal chronic autoimmune disorder. Circulating autoantibodies directed against components of the neuromuscular junction of skeletal muscles, most commonly nicotinic acetylcholine receptor and associated protein in the postsynaptic membrane, block neuromuscular transmission resulting in muscle weakness. This muscle weakness typically worsens with continued activity, improves on rest, and is of variable severity ranging from mild ocular muscle weakness to severe generalized muscle weakness, involving the respiratory muscle with impending respiratory failure. The worldwide prevalence of myasthenia gravis is 100-200 per million population, affecting more than 700,000 people all over the world. The prevalence rate has increased since the 1950s due to improved diagnostic precision and decreased mortality rate.
Drug Targets in Cellular Processes of Cancer
This book explores potential cellular drug targets for cancer therapy. The first couple of chapters describe conventional treatment (radiotherapy, chemotherapy, and immunotherapy) & detection (biosensors) strategies for cancer. In contrast, the subsequent chapters address the role of cyclin-dependent kinases and cell cycle regulatory proteins in the growth of cancer cells and their potential as target for cancer treatment. The book then discusses the regulation of various pro-apoptotic and anti-apoptotic proteins via chemotherapeutic drugs.
