He had an Echocardiogram which showed a rapidly enlarging pericardial tamponade and he began to arrest. The team was led by Dr Lee Blair and also present was heart surgery resident Dr Michael Byrom, who admitted that he had only ever seen a resuscitative thoracotomy on youtube. They successfully undertook this procedure, working together as a team of emergency physicians and surgeons, relieved the tamponade and sutured a ventricular lesion. The patient is fit and well today and living a busy career as the rapper 'Lazy J' and has visited the hospital to thank the team that saved his life. This whole episode was captured by a film crew and stimulated us to create a course to make sure that Emergency Physicians and Surgeons can work together in the biggest emergency that Emergency Departments see to make sure that more young people like Jelal are saved from life threatening penetrating chest trauma. This monograph makes a major new contribution to the historiography of criminal justice in England and Wales by focusing on the intersection of the history of law and crime with medical history. It does this through the lens provided by one group of historical actors, medical professionals who gave evidence in criminal proceedings. They are the means of illuminating the developing methods and personnel associated with investigating and prosecuting crime in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, when two linchpins of modern society, centralised policing and the adversarial criminal trial, emerged and matured. The book is devoted to two central questions: what did medical practitioners contribute to the investigation of serious violent crime in the period 1700 to 1914, and what impact did this have on the process of criminal justice? Drawing on the details of 2,600 cases of infanticide, murder and rape which occurred in central England, Wales and London, the book offers a comparative long-term perspective on medico-legal practice - that is, what doctors actually did when they were faced with a body that had become the object of a criminal investigation. It argues that medico-legal work developed in tandem with and was shaped by the needs of two evolving processes: pre-trial investigative procedures dominated successively by coroners, magistrates and the police; and criminal trials in which lawyers moved from the periphery to the centre of courtroom proceedings. In bringing together for the first time four groups of specialists - doctors, coroners, lawyers and police officers - this study offers a new interpretation of the processes that shaped the modern criminal justice system.

These have been taken from books and journals read, as well as noted down from conferences and meetings attended. Entries were made into little yearly diaries. Over the last two decades, I have used these as a good source of my material for the numerous surgical quiz shows I have conducted for the relevant audiences (mainly surgical postgraduates and residents of the MS and DNB general surgical streams) at City, State, and National levels. Also, as part of my Quiz shows are numerous 'filler slides' of surgical aphorisms, myths, and humour, making it into a whole session of 'Quizotainment'. I have now attempted to put together all these surgical and medical facts into some sort of order and grouping to help easy reference and retrieval. I have included surgical aphorisms and humour, too, to offer an angle of fun while assimilating the fact, hence the title Fact and Fun in Surgery. It is important to note that the vast majority of the facts and quotes are NOT my own, and for many of them, I have not been able to trace their origin. I immensely thank all these unmentioned contributors for having shared their facts in the surgical literature or discussions. I have listed the broad references of the books in which the majority of these facts and fun quips are mentioned, but the list is not complete. It is also relevant to note that these fact listings are not exhaustive, nor do they cover all disciplines of medicine. They are predominantly surgical, with a few from the grey areas between surgery and other specialities. By compiling this book of surgical and medical facts, I do hope to fill a small void in surgical learning at the student level. I have always maintained that a person with no sense of humour has no sense at all and so used the aphorism, the pun, and the light-hearted wit, judiciously, to cool down the burden of memorisation, and later, to help in the recall. The combination of fact with fun definitely helps retentiveness and recollection of the fact. The book will, perhaps, help teachers too, in their preparations for teaching sessions.

The story you are about to read is one of my fight for survival.For most of my adult life, I was someone who had few real struggles in life other than the normal day-to-day stresses: raising children, maintaining a healthy marriage, keeping a steady job, etc. That all changed after I turned fifty.For several years, I lived as if I were drowning. I would struggle and grasp for air as someone who dives down too deep and can't rise to the surface quickly enough. In the Spring of 2013, my doctor diagnosed me with Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis, commonly referred to as IPF. As my physical condition continued to decline, my pulmonologist recommended me for a double lung transplant.I remember my surgeon saying that a double lung transplant is the "Murder One" of surgeries. What he meant was, it is one of the hardest surgeries a human can endure. Surprisingly, the procedure itself is fairly straightforward from a skilled surgeon's perspective; however, the toll on the human body is intense. The recovery time average is four to six weeks or in some cases, as you will read in my journey, significantly longer.Without a shadow of a doubt, God's providence and divine intervention in my life led me to a place where I could receive the best possible medical care for my situation. I can now see how my journey from my birthplace in England to Canada, and on to Pittsburgh-the home of some of the top pulmonologists in the country-was all part of the Lord's divine plan for me.There is no question that I owe my life to my amazing medical team at UPMC Presbyterian.
