Effects of Plant Extracts on Human Health
Plant extracts exhibit a variety of bioactive compounds (polyphenols, carotenoids, fibers, essential oils, polysaccharides, alkaloids, and proteins). The majority have biological effects, but their mechanisms of action are still unknown. In fact, the variability of compounds in crude extract of plants poses a challenge to fish, and exhibit activity for selected cellular targets for specific diseases of interest. This Special Issue focuses on medicinal plants and explores the potential effect of extracts and/or its compounds sourced from medicinal plants in specific experimental models of diseases. This SI summarizes the updated data related to plant extracts, and in some cases, highlighted major compounds characterized from a specific extract/plant in different disease models, including in cell-line prostate cancer and C57BL/6 mouse prostate, rheumatoid arthritis, respiratory diseases, hyperuricemia, hearing loss, influenza A, thrombose, and diabetes. In addition, there have been reports about the multifaceted effects of extracts on inflammation, neuroprotection, immunomodulation, hepatoprotection, cardio protection, diabetes, and arthritic and microbial stress. At the professional level, football is a sport where players run approximately 11 kilometers per game, and about 10% of this constitutes high-intensity running. Additionally, they engage in various other intense actions during the game, which often determine its outcome. In recent years, the pace of the game and the number of matches have significantly increased. To cope with this, footballers need to possess highly developed physical abilities. The introduction of new technologies (e.g., GPS) in training assists coaches in better managing the demands of microcycle design. Moreover, at developmental ages, a special emphasis should be placed on the development of physical abilities, and coaches should exploit the "windows" that appear at each age to maximize performance.This Special Issue offers the opportunity to publish high-quality original papers, systematic reviews, and meta-analyses focused on the development of soccer fitness in both young athletes and adults. Effects of Selenium and Other Micronutrient Intake on Human Health
Selenium, which is an important microelement for human health, plays a critical role in a wide variety of homeostatic processes through selenoproteins. These include endoplasmic reticulum homeostasis, immune response, regulation of transcription factors and apoptosis, control of the cellular redox state, and development of the central nervous system. Unfortunately, due to the narrow safe dose range of selenium intake, selenium deficiency and selenium excess can both yield adverse effects for human health. Low selenium status has been implicated in an increased risk of mortality, poor immune function, as well as some diseases such as Keshan disease, cretinism, and cognitive decline. Selenium excess leads to some side effects, e.g., hair loss, dermatitis, an elevated risk of diseases such as type 2 diabetes, and the occurrence of some neurological signs such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, hyperreflexia, convulsions, and motor weakness, etc. Considering the roles of Se in human health, selenium has gradually become a focal point of scientific research. Including, but not limited to, selenium, the Special Issue highlights the effects of micronutrient intake on human health.
