They should note though that despite the imperative and their desire to innovate their hospitals and the magnitude of the opportunity for innovators to both do good and do well, all too many efforts fail, losing billions of dollars along the way. The thesis of this book is that established hospitals and systems have every opportunity to not just survive but succeed in the future. But to achieve this they need to create a future proof approach to innovation that spans the gamut of having the right strategies in place to having the appropriate people, structures, systems and processes in place to drive organizational innovation. It is based on what big, established players are doing right in terms of innovation and the patterns that they exhibit that creates value across industries. It is difficult to single out one organization that has figured it all out but they are all characterized by having reinvented themselves over and over again.

Cities Under Covid-19: A Systems Perspective
The 15 international authors of this book live in Brazil, Canada, Cameroon, China, Cuba, European Union, Finland, Gaza Strip, India, Nepal, New Zealand, Nigeria, Sri Lanka, United Kingdom and the United States of America. The authors are linked to the International Science Council's Urban Health and Wellbeing Programme. In this book the authors analyse the management of COVID-19, which started in late 2019, in their cities. They explain their city's political, social and economic context, the dynamics of how the pandemic unfolded, drawing on quantitative and visual data, and their reflections on how it was managed. The book concludes with an analysis of the similarities and differences among COVID-19 outcomes in these cities. Using a systems perspective to learn from these experiences can help all cities to improve the governance of pandemics and be better prepared for likely future ones.

An incisive and powerful investigation of corporate impact on human and planetary well-being Freedom of choice lies at the heart of American society. Every day, individuals decide what to eat, which doctors to see, who to connect with online, and where to educate their children. Yet, many Americans don't realize that these choices are illusory at best. By the start of the 21st century, every major industrial sector in the global economy was controlled by no more than five transnational corporations, and in about a third of these sectors, a single company accounted for more than 40 percent of global sales. The available options in food, healthcare, education, transportation, and even online presence are largely constructed by corporations, whose sweeping influence have made them the public face and executive agents of 21st-century capitalism. Health of People, Health of Planet and Our Responsibility
This open access book not only describes the challenges of climate disruption, but also presents solutions. The challenges described include air pollution, climate change, extreme weather, and related health impacts that range from heat stress, vector-borne diseases, food and water insecurity and chronic diseases to malnutrition and mental well-being.The influence of humans on climate change has been established through extensive published evidence and reports. However, the connections between climate change, the health of the planet and the impact on human health have not received the same level of attention. Therefore, the global focus on the public health impacts of climate change is a relatively recent area of interest. This focus is timely since scientists have concluded that changes in climate have led to new weather extremes such as floods, storms, heat waves, droughts and fires, in turn leading to more than 600,000 deaths and the displacement of nearly 4 billion people in the last 20 years. Previous work on the health impacts of climate change was limited mostly to epidemiologic approaches and outcomes and focused less on multidisciplinary, multi-faceted collaborations between physical scientists, public health researchers and policy makers. Further, there was little attention paid to faith-based and ethical approaches to the problem. The solutions and actions we explore in this book engage diverse sectors of civil society, faith leadership, and political leadership, all oriented by ethics, advocacy, and policy with a special focus on poor and vulnerable populations. The book highlights areas we think will resonate broadly with the public, faith leaders, researchers and students across disciplines including the humanities, and policy makers.
The Pandemic Divide

New Trends in Neuromechanics and Motor Rehabilitation
Neuromechanics has been used to identify optimal rehabilitation protocols that successfully improve motor deficits in various populations, such as elderly people and individuals with neurological diseases (e.g., stroke, Parkinson's disease, and essential tremor). By investigating structural and functional changes in the central and peripheral nervous systems based on neuromechanical theories and findings, we can expand our knowledge regarding underlying neurophysiological mechanisms and specific motor impairment patterns before and after therapies to further develop new training programs (e.g., non-invasive brain stimulation). Thus, the aim of this Special Issue is to present the main contributions of researchers and rehabilitation specialists in biomechanics, motor control, neurophysiology, neuroscience, and rehabilitation science. The current collection provides new neuromechanical approaches addressing theoretical, methodological, and practical topics for facilitating motor recovery progress.
Precision Medicine in Neurodevelopmental Disorders
This book focuses on the proposition of a paradigm shift to enable stratification of the highly heterogeneous autism spectrum disorders, by borrowing from and adapting the precision medicine model. A compilation of 9 rigorously peer-reviewed manuscripts offers new approaches to automatically stratify autism-related genes into different neuropsychiatric and associated neurological disorders and, accordingly, repurpose existing therapies and support systems for each thus uncovered phenotypic subtype. Methods for telemedicine are introduced to scale diagnostics and brought to underrepresented communities, thus diversifying the pool of participants in research and treatments. Biosensor data and methods are introduced to accompany genomics subtyping with precision phenotyping. Importantly, an in-depth review offering a paradigm shift for early detection and treatments of autism is presented through stages of neurodevelopment spanning from the womb to infancy and beyond, across the human lifespan.

Developing and Engaging Clinical Leaders in the "New Normal" of Hospitals
Healthcare systems across the globe are currently facing perhaps the greatest challenges and pressures to date as the need to improve outcomes, efficiency, productivity, quality, customer satisfaction and sustainability have significantly risen. Further, the emerging focus on value-based healthcare has increased performance expectations. To improve capability to face these challenges, doctors were "transformed" by health organizations and systems into more hybrid figures, i.e., doctor-managers and most recently clinical leaders. Yet, in many cases their engagement hasn't worked as expected or desired, and there is still much ambiguity on what is the set of expectations attached to the new hybrid role. Providing a systematic review of previous literature about the progressively worrying challenge in transforming doctors to clinical leaders, Lega and Pirino offer a qualitative analysis of different advanced countries facing the issue of training this hybrid role. Finding improved practices applicable elsewhere, they conclude with a case study focus on the Italian system. Developing and Engaging Clinical Leaders in the "New Normal" of Hospitals suggests specific policy and practice recommendations on how the system should evolve with regards to clinical leadership.
Howard Hiatt
The seven-decade career of Howard Hiatt, a pioneer in public health, advocate for global health and health equity, a mentor to generations of healthcare leaders. Howard Hiatt--physician, scientist, advocate for global health, and mentor to generations of healthcare leaders--has spent much of his seven-decade career being ahead of his time. His innovative ideas as head of Harvard's School of Public Health from 1972 to 1984--about preventive medicine, the incorporation of cutting-edge science into the curriculum, and cross-disciplinary collaboration--met fierce resistance at the time but are now widely recognized building blocks of public health. Hiatt's interest in global health and health equity equipped him to advocate for a series of younger physicians and researchers, including Paul Farmer and Jim Kim, two founders of Partners in Health, and the prominent health policy expert Don Berwick. This book tells the story of Hiatt's life and work, with important lessons for today drawn from Hiatt's 92 years of experience. Hiatt, born in 1925, attended Harvard College and received an M.D. degree from Harvard Medical School. Before he headed the School of Public Health, he was a modernizing force as chief of medicine at Boston's Beth Israel Hospital. After his stormy tenure at SPH, he went to Brigham and Women's as a professor of medicine and a senior physician with a portfolio of his own devising. It was at the Brigham that Hiatt took on the role of mentor, influencing generations of physicians and staking out new territory in the fields of global health and clinical effectiveness. He is still active at 92 as teacher and mentor.

Communication and Community Engagement in Disease Outbreaks
This book provides readers with a critical, conceptual and applied understanding of the role of communication and community engagement for disease outbreak preparedness and response.Until the WHO declared COVID-19 a pandemic on March 11, 2020, for several years public health authorities and influential voices in the international public health community have warned of a pandemic and therefore a need to strengthen governments and communities' ability to prevent and respond to it effectively to minimize its impact on lives and economies. While investments have focused on clinical, diagnostic, and vaccine research, preventing and minimizing the impact of disease outbreaks requires a wider socio-ecological systems approach that places communities at the centre of the response. Such an approach is still rare in public health practice. One of the key lessons that the authors have learned, and on which they reflect in the chapters, is that technical inputswill be as effective as they are fully integrated within the broader architecture of disease outbreak preparedness and response. The ten chapters of this contributed volume are organized under three parts: a conceptual framework, case studies, and recommendations. Communication and Community Engagement in Disease Outbreaks is a timely and essential resource for public health managers, donors, implementers, organizations engaged in disease prevention and control and academics called on to support the response. What started as a local health anomaly in one Chinese province quickly became a world-stopping crisis affecting every major nation in 2020. Industries from travel to manufacturing suffered sudden, acute disruptions due to political action to lock down cities and block the free movement of people and goods within and between countries. The Pope of Happiness
This book honors the work of Ruut Veenhoven, who has been a pioneer and leader in the field of happiness studies for the past 50 years. Madness and Social Change
In this book, the history of the Brazilian Psychiatric Reform is told by one of its main protagonists. In the early 1980s, there were about 80 thousand people admitted to psychiatric hospitals in Brazil, with average lengths of hospital stay of approximately 25 years. The psychiatric reform process that took place in the country was responsible for closing more than 60 thousand beds in mental asylums, most of them characterized by conditions of violence and abandonment.The Brazilian Psychiatric Reform was inspired by the psychosocial care model introduced by psychiatrist Franco Basaglia in Italy and was marked by the broad participation of social movements, such as the anti-asylum movement and other human rights movements. This process gave rise to a model of mental health care based on open-door territorial mental health services, guided by the principle of treatment in liberty, in addition to other strategies of deinstitutionalization. More than a proposal to restructureor modernize the mental health care model, the objective of the Brazilian Psychiatric Reform was the construction of a new social place for the diverse and singular subjective experience of madness. By intending to produce new imaginaries, new social representations and new meanings for these experiences, the Brazilian Psychiatric Reform led to one of the larger experiences of deinstitutionalization in the world and to the large scale implementation of a new model of mental health care in which the old asylum-centric paradigm was replaced by a new democratic psychosocial care model.
The Physical, Personal, and Social Impact of Spinal Cord Injury
This compact book uniquely examines individual lived experience with spinal cord injury (SCI). It provides education and a clearer understanding of the many facets of a SCI -- medical, physical, psychological, cognitive, personal, and social -- in a single compact volume, so that readers learn the effect a SCI can have on a person. Drugs and Public Health in Post-Soviet Central Asia
The book outlines post-Soviet style of health management in Central Asia. Regional studies on Central Asia to date have focused on states, politics, religion and inter-ethnic relations but not on the health system within the region. Soviet-style policies have also covered only other aspects relevant for the region. This book highlights the public health situation of the region with a focus on drug abuse, HIV/AIDS in the context of increased mobility, and drug trafficking routes which became even more porous after the break-up of the Soviet Union. Based on a qualitative study, the empirical data in the book was collected during long-term fieldwork conducted in Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan in 2010-2011 as well as shorter stays in Uzbekistan between 2012-2016. The analysis of the empirical material largely draws on the works of Foucault, particularly his concept of biopolitics when analyzing Soviet-style health management that is still practiced in the region. Applying the Foucauldian genealogical method, this study has been structured to trace the genealogy of epidemics to understand the historical path of drug abuse in the region as well as the discursive genealogy of drug politics and drug abuse. Applying the same genealogical method of Foucault, the formative and discursive trajectory of the institution of Uchyot was traced to contextualize the health governance methods that have historical legacy of Soviet-style governance and control of the total population. Information Technology’s Role in Global Healthcare Systems
Over the past few decades, modern information technology has made a significant impact on people's daily lives worldwide. In the field of health care and prevention, there has been a progressing penetration of assistive health services such as personal health records, supporting apps for chronic diseases, or preventive cardiological monitoring.In 2020, the range of personal health services appeared to be almost unmanageable, accompanied by a multitude of different data formats and technical interfaces. The exchange of health-related data between different healthcare providers or platforms may therefore be difficult or even impossible. In addition, health professionals are increasingly confronted with medical data that were not acquired by themselves, but by an algorithmic "black box". Even further, externally recorded data tend to be incompatible with the data models of classical healthcare information systems.From the individual's perspective, digital services allow for the monitoring of their own health status. However, such services can also overwhelm their users, especially elderly people, with too many features or barely comprehensible information. International Regimes in Global Health Governance

Health Literacy Development among People with Chronic Diseases
Chronic diseases account for a considerable part of the strain on health care systems and are burdensome for each affected individual and their families. In recent years, the concept of health literacy has been substantially elaborated on, particularly regarding the development and implementation of interventions at different levels, efforts to improve its measurement, and the role of communities and organizations. While a range of advancements are uncontested, specific challenges still revolve around, for example, a thorough application of modern practices of health literacy that focus on societal support of health literacy strengths and response to health literacy challenges; developing, testing, and evaluating strategies for organizational health literacy responsiveness; and improving the co-design, local ownership, and integration of health literacy actions and interventions in communities experiencing vulnerability and disadvantage. Covid and Custom in Rural South Africa
This book explores the impact of Covid-19, and the associated state lockdown, on rural lives in a former homeland in South Africa. The 2020 Disaster Management Act saw the state sweep through rural areas, targeting funerals and other customary practices as potential "super-spreader" events. This unprecedented clampdown produced widespread disruption, fear and anxiety. The authors build on path-breaking work concerning local responses to West Africa's Ebola epidemic, and examine the HIV/AIDS pandemic, to understand the impact of the Covid crisis on these communities, and on rural Africa more broadly. To shed light on the role of custom and ritual in rural social change during the pandemic, Covid and Custom in Rural South Africa applies long-term historical and ethnographic research; theories of people's science, local knowledge and the human economy; and fieldwork conducted in ten rural South African communities during lockdown. The volume highlights differences between developments in Southern Africa and elsewhere on the continent, while exploring how the former apartheid homelands-commonly, yet problematically, represented as former "labor reserves"-have since been reconstituted as new home-spaces.
