Time to Think

Ingram 出版
2024/06/07 出版

SHORTLISTED FOR THE BAILLIE GIFFORD PRIZE FOR NON-FICTION SHORTLISTED FOR THE ORWELL PRIZE FOR POLITICAL WRITING "This is what journalism is for." --Observer Time to Think goes behind the headlines to reveal the truth about the collapse of the world's largest gender service for children." Are we hurting children?" That's the core question at the heart of Time to Think, which exposes the truth about the rise and fall of the United Kingdom's flagship gender identity clinic for children. Answering in the affirmative, it exposes how ideology triumphed over evidence within this part of the healthcare system. In the process, child safeguarding was overlooked and pediatric patients were medically harmed. As investigative journalist Hannah Barnes reveals, the Tavistock's Gender Identity Development Service (GIDS) was set up initially to provide talking therapies to young people who were questioning their gender identity. But in a little over a decade, it referred around two thousand children, some as young as nine years old, for medication to block their puberty. In the same period, with ever-greater numbers of children in need of treatment, the profile of the patients changed from largely pre-pubescent boys to mostly adolescent girls, who were often contending with other medical and psychological difficulties. GIDS was shut down by English health authorities in March 2024 and new services will not be able to prescribe these profound medical interventions. Yet, GIDS's approach to treating children with gender identity distress was, in fact, more cautious than that observed in other countries-- including, notably, in the United States. This urgent, scrupulous and dramatic book explains how GIDS was the site of a serious medical scandal. As this scandal continues to unfold and even accelerate within other institutions and across countries, it is a gripping parable and disturbing cautionary tale for our times.

The Wisdom of Plagues

Simon & Sc 出版
2024/06/02 出版

Award-winning New York Times reporter Donald G. McNeil, Jr. reflects on twenty-five years of covering pandemics--how governments react to them, how the media covers them, how they are exploited, and what we can do to prepare for the next one--in this "fascinating, ferocious fusillade against humanity's two deadliest enemies: disease and itself" (The Economist). For millions of Americans, Donald G. McNeil, Jr. was a comforting voice when the COVID-19 pandemic broke out. He was a regular reporter on The New York Times's popular podcast The Daily and told listeners early on to prepare for the worst. He'd covered public health for twenty-five years and quickly realized that an obscure virus in Wuhan, China, was destined to grow into a global pandemic rivaling the 1918 Spanish flu. Because of his clear advice, a generation of Times readers knew the risk was real but that they might be spared by taking the right precautions. Because of his prescient work, The New York Times won the 2021 Pulitzer Gold Medal for Public Service. The Wisdom of Plagues is "must-reading for preparing us better for the next unavoidable epidemic" (Peter Piot, MD, co-discoverer of Ebola) as McNeil shares his account of what he learned over a quarter-century of reporting in over sixty counties. Many science reporters understand the basics of diseases--from how a virus works to what goes into making a vaccine. But very few understand the psychology of how small outbreaks turn into pandemics, why people refuse to believe they're at risk, or why they reject protective measures like quarantine or vaccines. The COVID-19 pandemic was the story McNeil had trained his whole life to cover. His expertise and breadth of sources let him make many accurate predictions in 2020 about the course that a deadly new virus would take and how different countries would respond. By the time McNeil wrote his last New York Times stories, he had not lost his compassion--but he had grown far more stone-hearted about how governments should react. He had witnessed enough disasters and read enough history to realize that while every epidemic is different, failure was the one constant. Small case-clusters ballooned into catastrophe because weak leaders became mired in denial. Citizens refused to make even minor sacrifices for the common good. They were encouraged in that by money-hungry entrepreneurs and power-hungry populists. Science was ignored, obvious truths were denied, and the innocent too often died. In The Wisdom of Plagues, "one of the most enlightening books on public health" (Lena Wen, MD), McNeil offers tough, prescriptive advice on what we can do to improve global health and be better prepared for the inevitable next pandemic.

Adults 65 and older are the fastest growing segment of the population worldwide, which means there will be more people living with mild cognitive impairment and dementia. Written at a resident level, the Primer on Dementia provides early career professionals with the information necessary to care for the often complex clinical presentations of people with age-associated neurocognitive disorders. This book is organized into three sections: (1) core concepts, (2) dementia syndromes, and (3) disease management. The chapters in section one focus on clinical knowledge and skills applicable across all dementias, including the diagnostic interview and neurologic examination, frequently used cognitive screening measures, neuropsychological assessment, neuroimaging, and differential diagnosis. Chapters in section two review the most common dementia syndromes and cover epidemiology, neuropathology, biomarkers, genetics, and clinical signs and symptoms, providing at least one illustrative case. The final section presents the latest evidence-based interventions from risk management to pharmacologic and nonpharmacologic approaches, while also addressing safety considerations, legal issues, palliative and advanced care planning, and attending to caregivers.

The Aging Revolution

2024/05/12 出版

A history of aging in the United States and an innovative blueprint for revolutionizing care for older adults from Northwell Health, New York's largest health care system. The New York Times described Dr. Robert Butler as "the man who saw old age anew." In his 1975 book Why Survive: Being Old in America, Butler argued that for far too many people old age was "a period of quiet despair . . . and muted rage" and he set out to mitigate it. Nearly five decades since he penned his book, a devoted band of brilliant physicians and others in the healthcare field have realized at least a portion of Butler's dream: to recognize and alleviate suffering among the aging. The Aging Revolution is the story of Butler and his disciples: women and men who saw older distressed adults in hospitals and homes, and worse: being ignored by most of the medical establishment. These revolutionaries could not ignore the suffering, and they set out--individually and collectively--to create entirely new ways of caring for aging adults to ease their suffering and improve their quality and length of life. This revelatory book tells a story never-before told in its entirety, recounting the one of the most significant periods of improvement in American medical history. Readers will learn about pioneering individuals, concepts, and ideas that have improved the lives of millions, including: the women who placed the spotlight on delirium and falls--major issues for older adults; the campaign to build and spread Geriatric and Palliative Care; the small bands of doctors who worked the halls of Congress to create a new program that provides primary care along with home visits from healthcare professionals; and the New York-based foundation that has devoted its mission and millions exclusively to improving care and quality of life for aging adults. Today, as a result, chronic conditions that almost always accompany old age are far more manageable. Older people enjoy more options for work and professional development, for education, for leisure and travel, for sports and maintaining physical strength and mobility. For increasing numbers of Americans, life is healthier and richer in the experiences that matter most. Yet, aging in America can still be a challenge and, too often, particularly for the poor, a painful struggle. The range of mental and physical well-being has almost infinite variations: ninety-year-olds running marathons; sixty-five-year-olds incapacitated by stroke. While this book celebrates the incredible progress and strides made in this field, it also highlights areas that need improvement. The authors lay out specific steps that, if implemented, could ignite the aging revolution and diminish the total volume of older adults suffering in America.

Disease and Urbanization

E J,Clegg  著
Routledge 出版
2024/04/26 出版

Originally published in 1980, this book focusses attention on various aspects of disease ecology. A series of contrasts appear, between urban and rural, temperate and tropical, and affluent and poor communities. These socio-geographical contrasts are related to a further dichotomy between infectious (usually acute) diseases, and non-infectious (usually chronic) ones. The first part of the book is largely concerned with infectious disease, such as malaria and gastroenteritis, in rural/tropical/poor communities. The second discusses the often-antithetical combination of chronic disease in urban/temperate/affluent populations.

Animal Welfare in a Pandemic

Ingram 出版
2024/04/24 出版

Animal Welfare in a Pandemic explores the impact of COVID-19 on a wide array of animals, from those in the wild to companion and captive animals. During the height of the pandemic, a range of animals were infected, and many died, but this was hard to predict, even using up-to-date bioinformatics. Lockdowns around the world had, and continue to have, a major effect on animals' welfare, influencing pet ownership and care, as well as impacting on the work of conservation institutes due to the lack of visitors and funding and lack of tourist presence in the wild which impacted on anti-poaching efforts. Some of the vast amount of personal protection equipment (PPE) that was distributed was discarded, creating both dangers and occasional opportunities for wild animals. With the rollout of human vaccines, some countries started developing animal vaccines, only some of which were deployed. In summary, the pandemic had a wide-ranging influence on animal welfare around the world. This is reviewed to highlight what can be learned to protect and enhance animal welfare in future epidemics/pandemics, and contribute to a genuinely One Health approach where the health and welfare of both humans and animals are considered holistically. This book is authored by members of the University of the West of England, Bristol, who span a range of expertise in Biological Sciences, Social Sciences, Animal Welfare, and Ethics.

Practical Vision Science

Routledge 出版
2024/04/23 出版

This workbook provides a collection of experiments and observations that use physical materials (rather than digital displays or resources) to reveal fundamental properties of the human visual system.Practical Vision Science centers discovery, observation, and critical thinking. By observing and manipulating visual phenomena, readers gain insights regarding visual processing from the outside world into high-level areas of the visual cortex. The text covers geometric optics, image formation, early stages of visual processing, and inferences regarding brightness, color, depth, motion, and form. The goal is to highlight the critical role that observation of one's own sensory experiences plays in vision science, while introducing phenomena that provide clues about the computations and constraints that shape our experience of the visual world. Each exercise can be completed with everyday materials, and the text includes discussion of key phenomena readers should be able to observe and the implications of these effects for underlying mechanisms that support visual experience in each case.Practical Vision Science is an essential text for upper undergraduate and postgraduate students of Sensation and Perception, providing the opportunity to learn by doing things rather than reading facts about the visual system on the page.

Slow Now with Clear Skies

Ingram 出版
2024/03/29 出版

I must/ slow down, touch earth, find/ the smooth stone in my pocket... These lines are at the heart of both Julene Tripp Weaver's poem, "Safe Space," and her necessary poetry collection. Weaver uses images from her own life and the viruses that plague our world to witness suffering. And to acknowledge that all of us have been changed over the Covid years. Everyone lives on a spectrum/ of health and neuroticism, she tells us.She offers no easy answers to how we might heal in a dangerous world when even our closest relationships might betray us. My mother never enters at the right/ time, even in my dreams, she confides. Yet she writes that all of us can find back doors/ into the body after illness, loss and the hauntings of memory. In post-pandemic America, this is the book I needed to read. Weaver, an herbalist, knows we and the earth can heal together. Find channels that soothe. ...Send anxiety into the earth. One of these channels is poetry. The title of the collection comes from the final line of the poem "I've Lived Through One War." She rallies us with the lines: We must ask/ new questions, find unconventional answers...It's time/for massive change.../ Our planet, slow now with clear skies. -Joanne M. Clarkson, author of Hospice HouseThere's something going on here. She's done explaining. Done justifying. Done worrying well. She's wailing. Grieving. Believing. Bringing her healingpowers. Her nurturing. Her whole wise woman self. Looking unflinchingly at this life. After plagues and pandemics. After war. After global ecologicalruin. After injustices. After loss after loss. There's a surge of possibilities: Survival. Gratitude. Incantations. Touch. And most of all-hope.-John Burgess, author of Punk Poems

Deadly Encounters

Peter,Curson  著
Ingram 出版
2024/03/25 出版

Although written from an Australian perspective this book offers a broader insight into how infectious diseases spread, how they influence human life, and how we should react to such disasters. Like many countries in the world, Australia has had to reckon with epidemics and pandemics for the last 250 years, and it has continually struggled to understand their origins. This book provides an interdisciplinary perspective of the history of disease outbreaks in Australia that combines elements of Public Health, Epidemiology, Medical Geography and History. This new edition includes analysis of the recent outbreaks of COVID-19 which have highlighted the significance of the biophysical world and how little we have learned from the past. Our most recent pandemic has demonstrated how much better our tracking of the scientific data needs to be and has shown that there is still much to learn about how we, and our governments and media, should respond. This case study of the history of Australia's response to epidemics has considerable relevance in a world increasingly confronted by these events.

Hearing Aids From th e Inside Out

Ingram 出版
2024/03/21 出版

It is estimated that more than 28 million people in the United States have severe hearing loss. For the majority of these people, a hearing aid is probably the best way to improve their hearing. Recent advances in hearing aid technology mean that modern hearing aids have a high level of sound quality in a very small device. It should be noted that the hearing aid will not restore normal hearing. What it can do is make it easier for the user to detect and interpret sounds. Often a person with a hearing loss will not even notice if someone is trying to talk to them. This is what the stethoscope will help with. Even though there are many different kinds of hearing aids available today, they all function similarly. Sound waves are picked up by a microphone, or receiver, which transforms them into an electrical signal. After processing, this signal is routed to an amplifier, which recreates the audio signal. The frequencies that the user has trouble hearing are amplified by the processing. Users of hearing aids can hear speech at a volume that is comfortable for them. It could require some time for the brain to get used to the new messages it is receiving. The use of hearing aids isn't ideal because of some restrictions. They won't eliminate background noise or bring back normal hearing. It can be adjusted, though, to lessen background noise. When they first get hearing aids, people frequently remark that they sound odd to themselves and that relatively loud noises from outside street traffic and refrigerator fans irritate them. But once their brains had a chance to adjust to their new hearing aids, background noise starts to get filtered out to a more comfortable level.

The entire book is handwritten and includes diagrams and sketches that explain, in layman's terms, the origin, epidemiology, clinical features, public health concerns of various life-threatening diseases. Drugs, Ageing and Society

Bruce,Burns  著
Routledge 出版
2024/03/20 出版

During the 1970s and 1980s prescription and over-the-counter drugs had come to play a major role in the health care of older people. Originally published in 1986, this book reviews the historical background to this development and explores its social and pharmacological implications. The main aim of the study was to provide a critical perspective on drug use together with a framework for developing effective prescribing policies. The authors do not, in developing their arguments, reject the enormous value of drugs in the treatment of many illnesses affecting older people; they do, however, criticise excessive as well as inappropriate prescribing. The intention was to provide some practical illustrations of how the harmful effects of drug use can be curtailed. This book was aimed, in particular, at workers in the health services, for example: doctors, health visitors, district nurses, pharmacists, the professions allied to medicine. However, it should also be of interest to other groups such as social workers, carers, support groups and older people themselves.
