Alzheimer's
Caring for a loved one who is terminally ill can be tremendously stressful under any circumstances. If that person has a degenerative and dementing disease such as Alzheimer's, and is unable to participate in decisions regarding his or her care, the stress is that much greater. When it comes to making those difficult moral and ethical decisions which will preserve the dignity and integrity of the patient while also maintaining the caregiver's own selfhood, this is the book that can help. How much should the patient be told? How strongly should he be urged to plan for his own future? Is it ever right to lie to the patient about her condition? When is it right to place your loved one in a nursing home--and not feel guilty about it? How do different family members arrive at agreement among themselves in each of these situations? Authors and bioethicists James and Hilde Lindemann Nelson have written an invaluable step-by-step guide to tackling these and other difficult decisions. Using their extensive research on moral issues in health care, the Nelsons create hypothetical scenarios that demonstrate some of the most common situations caregivers will have to face during every stage of the illness, and show by example how they can make the right choices for themselves, the patient, and the rest of the family. This invaluable information, combined with a state-by-state and city-by-city guide to agencies and support groups offering practical assistance, as well as a list of suggested reading on the subject, make this book unique--and the most complete source of advice available.

Viral Pandemics
This new edition of Viral Pandemics illuminates how the increasing emergence of novel viruses has combined with intensifying global interconnectedness to create an escalating spiral of viral disease. It includes an introduction to the key characteristics of viral pathogens that make them so dangerous followed by a comprehensive survey of epidemic viral disease from 1900 to the present. Now featuring new chapters on COVID-19 and mpox, the book uses an historical narrative to follow the path of each virus from its original detection to its emergence as an explosive pandemic. This allows readers to appreciate the biologic potential of the virus, the dynamics of epidemic disease spread, and the contemporaneous abilities of medicine and science to contend with the pathogen. In parallel, the book discusses those elements of connectedness that enable a localized disease outbreak to become a global pandemic, allowing readers to appreciate the increasingly critical role that human activity plays in global disease. In the last two chapters, the authors take a different approach. A Look Back critically evaluates the response to COVID-19 against the history of the emergence of public health in response to several other modern global pandemics and identifies some lessons we can still learn to improve our response to future pandemics. A Way Forward integrates the biologic and environmental factors that emerged as critical in the analysis of all the pandemics in the book and then uses this composite picture to propose ways to interrupt the escalating cycle of viral pandemic disease. Written in a straightforward and accessible style, this book is ideal reading for students of public health and its history, the history of medicine and medical anthropology, as well as general readers keen to understand how viral pandemics have shaped, and continue to shape, millions of lives.

Epidemiology and the People’s Health
Why a thoroughly updated and revised second edition of this book about theories of disease distribution, in past and present societal and ecological context? Because the lived realities and ideas, data, and disinformation about the people's health are dynamic, not static. The first edition, published in 2011, addressed a major problem: although epidemiology is often referred to as the science of public health, unlike other sciences, its theoretical foundations are rarely articulated. While the idea of epidemiologic theory may seem dry and arcane, it is at its core about explaining the people's health. Drawing on new scholarship and providing new examples, this new edition of Epidemiology and the People's Health extends its analysis of theories employed to explain patterns of disease in their societal and ecological context and explicates how epidemiologic theory has long shaped epidemiologic practice, knowledge, and the politics of public health. The range of theories spans from ancient Greece and China and different strands of traditional medicine to the 19th-century rise of epidemiology as a scientific discipline on through the present and contrasts the currently dominant theories -- biomedical and lifestyle -- to their social epidemiologic alternatives: sociopolitical, psychosocial, and ecosocial theory of disease distribution. Central to the argument of this book is that explicit use of- and debates over -- epidemiologic theories of disease distribution will improve the odds of producing epidemiologic knowledge truly useful for preventing disease, improving the public's health, and advancing health justice.

COVID-19 and the Mark of the Beast
Are you a Christian? Are you concerned about the COVID-19 vaccine and its relationship to the Mark of the Beast as prophesied in the Bible? If so, this is a book you should read. Revelations 13:16-18 states: "And he causeth all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and bond, to receive a mark in their right hand, or in their foreheads: And that no man might buy or sell, save he that had the mark, or the name of the beast, or the number of his name. Here is wisdom. Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast: for it is the number of a man; and his number is Six hundred threescore and six." Does that sound familiar to you? In France, no one is allowed to enter any store without showing proof of COVID-19 vaccination. The same thing is happening in parts of Australia and the Philippines. In the United States, the cities of New York, San Francisco and Los Angeles have launched similar plans. Are you familiar with H.R. Bill 6666? How about patent number WO/2020/060606? Are those numbers just a coincidence? Read this book and discover for yourself the startling truth about the world we live in.

Epidemics and Pandemics
In the wake of COVID, it's more important than ever to understand epidemics-how they emerge and what we can do to fight back. Part of Bloomsbury's Q&A Health Guides series, this book takes a balanced approach, offering a blend of both epidemiological science and practical suggestions grounded in that science. The volume's 47 questions begin with the basics, including which diseases are most likely to become epidemics, which have historically been the deadliest, and how factors such as climate change will affect the emergence of future pandemics. Next, the book answers readers' questions regarding how epidemics spread and how strategies such as disease reporting, quarantine, and vaccine development can help combat them. Readers will also find questions offering guidance on how to protect yourself during a widespread disease event, including which information sources to trust and how personal choices can influence exposure risk. The final section of questions examines epidemics' far-reaching impacts on everything from mental health to economic prosperity. Augmenting the main text, a collection of 5 case studies illustrate key concepts and issues through relatable stories and insightful recommendations. The common misconceptions section at the beginning of the volume dispels 5 long-standing myths about epidemics and pandemics (the influence of which could be seen throughout the COVID-19 crisis), directing readers to additional information in the text. The glossary defines terms that may be unfamiliar to readers, while the directory of resources curates a list of the most useful books, websites, and other materials. Finally, whether they're looking for more information about this subject or any other health-related topic, readers can turn to the Guide to Health Literacy section for practical tools and strategies for finding, evaluating, and using credible sources of health information both on and off the Internet.

Why Does It Hurt
In a world of constant movement, our bodies echo the demand for efficiency. But when the whispers of discomfort become cries of pain, Gordon Bosworth, a luminary in Elite Sport Physiotherapy, unveils the intricate language of the body's protest in "Why Does It Hurt." Drawing upon four decades of unrivaled expertise and a penchant for pioneering methods, Bosworth embarks on a profound journey, weaving personal anecdotes with professional insights. Physiotherapy, he contends, is akin to detective work-where every ache, every twinge, reveals clues to a deeper narrative within our neuromusculoskeletal system. This book transcends the confines of a manual; it's a beacon for patients seeking understanding and practitioners aiming to elevate their craft. Bosworth's narrative dismantles the myth of rushed recoveries in a hyper-accelerated world. He urges a deeper connection with our bodies, echoing the sentiment that healing isn't a swift Amazon delivery but a nuanced process honed over millennia. With a career spanning military service, Olympic teams, and professional sports, Bosworth's diverse experiences converge in the Bosworth Clinic, a testament to his commitment to reshaping injury management paradigms. His vision extends beyond the clinic walls, challenging the rigid dogma of viewing the body as an exact science.
Instead, he champions the belief that it's an ever-evolving canvas, requiring an artistic touch to decode its nuances. Bosworth doesn't claim omniscience, but his quest for knowledge continues to decode the body's messages. The Microbiome Connection
An essential resource to understanding gut health, the microbiome, and their connection to maintain digestive balance through diet--featuring meal planning guides and sample menus--by two leading experts in the field.Over the last fifteen years, research into the vast inner workings of the "microbiome" (the trillions of bacteria harbored in the gut) has led to groundbreaking advances in human health and well-being. Now, two of the leading experts in the field, Dr. Mark Pimentel and Dr. Ali Rezaie at Cedars-Sinai, have teamed up to create The Microbiome Connection, a must-have guide that arms readers with all of the knowledge and resources necessary to understand their microbiome, any symptoms they may be experiencing, and how to navigate symptom relief. An estimated 70 million people in the United States are affected by SIBO, IBS, or one of the more than a dozen other diseases linked to digestive health, and 74% of Americans say they live with symptoms of digestive discomfort. Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)--the most common gastrointestinal condition in the United States--affects millions of people of all ages. Not only do those who suffer from IBS and its similar, sister diagnosis--small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO)--experience symptoms such as abdominal pain, bloating, and altered bowel habits, they may also avoid participating in activities, social events, or travel for fear of having to constantly disappear to the bathroom or the embarrassment of explaining their discomfort. In The Microbiome Connection, doctors Pimentel and Rezaie provide explanations of what happens to IBS/SIBO patients from the first diagnosis to the end of treatment; reveal what changes can occur in the body in terms of the underlying physical processes to symptoms that may develop; and share evidence-based management and treatment of those symptoms through dietary changes and drug treatment. Also included are meal plans and sample menus for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, all of which are accompanied by explanations of which foods to eat in moderation and which foods to avoid because they will feed bacteria in the gut and could cause additional symptoms.A must-have resource for anyone who suffers from IBS or SIBO, or who wants to better understand their microbiome, this book will provide readers with the knowledge and resources to live a gut-happy and gut-healthy life.

Understanding Obesity
Most people have some dissatisfaction or concern about body weight, fatness, or obesity, either personally or professionally. This book shows how the popular understanding of obesity is often at odds with scientific understandings, and how misunderstandings about people with obesity can further contribute to the problem. It describes, in an approachable way, interconnected debates about obesity in public policy, medicine and public health, and how media and social media engage people in everyday life in those debates. In chapters considering body fat and fatness, genetics, metabolism, food and eating, inequality, blame and stigma, and physical activity, this book brings separate domains of obesity research into the field of complexity. By doing so, it aids navigation through the minefield of misunderstandings about body weight, fatness, and obesity that exist today, after decades of mostly failed policies and interventions.
Pathways from Pain to Meaning
People today strive to live as pain-free a life as possible, treating both physical pain and emotional suffering with a range of medical and alternative therapies. But in our efforts to avoid pain, are we excluding an important part of our human experience? In this sensitive and thoughtful book, psychologist Iris Paxino explores different kinds of pain and the ways in which each affects us: from the physical pain of illness and injury, through the emotional suffering caused by loss and deprivation, to the spiritual pain experienced in moments of doubt when we struggle with meaning in our lives. Paxino also discusses the history of pain, the impact of chronic pain and treatment methods including behavioural techniques and anthroposophic therapies. While pain should always be treated, Paxino argues that when we learn to accept it as an inescapable part of being human we develop resilience and inner peace as well as compassion for others. This sympathetic and enlightening book will be of interest to those who wish to explore the significance of pain in human experience and what we can learn from it.

Pandemics
Pandemics inflict significant harm on societies, often exacerbated by human activities that alter the natural environment. As cities expand, encroaching on areas once inhabited by wildlife, the risk of disease transmission increases. Bacteria have existed for 3.5 billion years and viruses for 1.5 billion years, while humans have only been around for 130,000 years. Coronaviruses have a long evolutionary history of over fifty million years, with some recent strains dating back to around 8000 BCE, indicating a prolonged coevolution with bats and birds. Advancements in technology during the 20th century have facilitated rapid global travel, allowing microbes to spread more quickly than ever before. The 1918 influenza pandemic, often referred to as the 'Spanish' flu, was particularly devastating, claiming between 50 and 100 million lives, or about five percent of the global population at the time. Major pandemics have historically led to significant social changes: the Justinian Plague contributed to the rise of Christianity, the bubonic plague heralded the end of serfdom, and the aftermath of the 'Spanish' flu saw many governments adopting socialized medicine. The concept began in socialist Russia and soon spread to countries like France, New Zealand, and eventually Great Britain. It took the return of battle-hardened soldiers from World War II to push this agenda politically in the UK. Post-war, the growing influence of the United States and the nascent World Health Organisation led to the decline of privileged classes and the establishment of the fundamental right to healthcare for every human being, irrespective of their background. As the world confronts the final stages of another global pandemic, the future remains uncertain. There are questions about whether new vaccines will effectively control the disease, leaving societies worldwide in a state of anticipation and adaptation.
Astrogliosis and Channel Function
Astrogliosis is a hallmark of central nervous system (CNS) neuroinflammatory disorders such as multiple sclerosis (MS). The Scarecrow of My Former Self
With vulnerability and gorgeous, lush imagery, Sarah Stockton presents a portrait of a life not defined by illness but circumscribed by it; a hybrid life of hospital visits and encounters with crystal healers, coyotes, iguanas. Stockton's poems of simultaneous rage and grace illuminate the realities of the chronically ill. -Jeannine Hall Gailey, author of Flare, Corona (BOA Editions) and Field Guide to the End of the World (Moon City Press) Sarah Stockton's The Scarecrow of My Former Self is a quiet, delicate hymn of the bodymind that both aspires and persists; though the poet confesses she "can't really do much / for... the world," - and yet. This book is a reclamation of visibility not just for Stockton's speaker, but for all who have a chronic illness. These poems create a metaphorical scarecrow, a kind of spiritual scaffold on which to hang some hope. Like a conjurer, Stockton creates a world of desire crafted from "bloodied dancing shoes, a mask // and a sea green bathing suit...." -Jill Khoury, Editor-in-Chief of Rogue Agent, author of Suites for the Modern Dancer (Sundress Publications)
Puswhisperer III
An entirely new compendium of clinical tales from Mark Crislip, MD, the "Puswhisperer." As in his previous collections, Puswhisperer I and II, Puswhisperer III provides clinical gems from a decades-long practice in infectious disease. From flu to staph to Legionnaire's to tuberculosis, HIV, and a few zebras, Puswhisperer will test your diagnostic acumen and ensure that you never miss an endocarditis or a Lyme disease. If you're a physician, this is a fun way to help you pass what Crislip consistently refers to as the Boreds. If you're not a clinician, but simply have a fondness for our bacterial and fungal overlords, then read the Puswhisperer and learn about microorganisms you've never heard of before (or ones whose names have been changed by pesky microbiologists at their annual meeting).
Puswhisperer II
A second year of clinical tales from the Puswhisperer, Mark Crislip, an infectious disease specialist from Portland, OR. Dr. Crislip kills strep and staph, fights flu, and is always on the lookout for "zebras"-those unusual infections (and sometimes non-infections) that leave all the doctors guessing. Originally intended as a guide for studying for the Boards, these tales have been edited for a lay audience and provide hours of educational entertainment for anyone interested in infectious disease.
