Civil Society Organizations and the Global Response to Hiv/AIDS
Why has the response to HIV/AIDS been unique? How did civil society organizations gain access to global decision-making forums to demand exceptional attention and resources for HIV/AIDS? This book seeks to answer these questions, among others, through a critical international relations approach that enquires into the role of civil society in global health governance. It documents how civil society forged the initial response to HIV/AIDS within a rights-based paradigm, and built international networks. It analyses why civil society was able to gain the right to participate in global health institutions and assesses what influence civil society representatives have within these institutions, particularly focusing on outcomes related to institutional legitimacy and downward accountability. The Caregiver's Companion
The Caregiver's Companion is a book for people who care for others. It is intended to be a companion, in the sense of a compassionate ally, for those who find themselves, perhaps abruptly, needing to care for others. In November 2012 Patricia Jean Smith's husband Ron suffered a massive attack on his brain. Talking with Patients, Volume 1
Spoken language is the most important diagnostic and therapeutic tool in medicine, and, according to Dr. Cassell, "we must be as precise with it as a surgeon with a scalpel." In these two volumes, he analyzes doctor-patient communication and shows how doctors can use language for the maximum benefit of their patients. Throughout, Dr. Cassell stresses that patients are complex, changing, psychological, social and physical beings whose illnesses are well represented by their own communication. He proposes that both listening and speaking are arts that can be learned best when they are based on the way that spoken language functions in medicine. Character and Caring
When classrooms and clinical rotations shut down in March 2020, medical school faculty, staff, and students craved connection, comfort, and guidance. The Political Economy of Universal Healthcare in Africa
The global rise in pandemics, most recently COVID-19, and other health challenges, some of which are due to climate change, have imposed significant challenges on the healthcare systems in economies around the world. Thus, this book deals with an issue that is very timely and relevant, not just in Africa but globally. It critically assesses healthcare reforms in Ghana under the Fourth Republic, since 1993. Although it focuses on Ghana's National Health Insurance Scheme of 2003, the book instructively goes beyond this program. The book argues that, although Ghana is a bellwether of healthcare reforms in Africa, its healthcare initiatives are still far from the service haven of healthcare as a human right.
