Ethics have an significant impact on the decisions nurses make in their day-to-day work, so it's important for all student nurses to develop their understanding of ethical frameworks as preparation for future practice. This book will make student nurses consider their own values, and how ethics fit into who they are and how they behave, helping them to unlock this interesting and complex subject. Key features: Fully mapped to the NMC Future Nurse standards of proficiency (2018) A practical guide that explores how ethics applies to nursing and shows you how the theory fits in to the realities of practice Contains real work case studies with an emphasis on ethical decision making Activities challenge students to reflect on their own values, experiences and prejudices and to think about how ethics fits in with who they are and how they behave
Improving Quality in Healthcare
This book is for anyone who is interested in improving quality in healthcare. It will appeal to those who are traditionally responsible for quality matters, as well as practicing clinicians and leaders. Unusually, it will also be as relevant to those who have the keenest interest in the quality of care - interested citizens. It is a deliberate antidote to the anti-intellectual, QI tool driven, mechanistic approach that still dominates much of healthcare quality improvement work. The authors - both of whom have extensive experience of working in and around quality issues in healthcare at a national, regional and local level - challenge such approaches, which they believe fail to take account of patient and organisational context and invite reductionism, cherry picking, atomisation of complex issues, leading ultimately to simplistic and unsustainable outcomes. Key features of the book: - An exploration of some of the often-overlooked and misunderstood core concepts of quality; their history and meaning in a contemporary context. - A framework to "question the work" using four interconnected conceptual domains as a valuable framework to consider improving quality and reducing failure demand. - Critical re-examination of the dominant approaches to change that are frequently adopted in "quality" work, many of which have been rooted in scientific management that have failed to live up to their promise - particularly transformational. - Exploring how an inter-disciplinary perspective can reframe aspects of quality thinking.

Wherever you are in your career - this book offers a great deal to inspire and to provoke thought. We could all learn from it."Nursing Standard"This book is timely. The increasing emphasis on the need for good leadership is signalled by the establishment across the world of new leadership development initiatives. Nursing Management in the Context of Quality
The conception of this work was the result of the research experiences of the organizers in health institutions involving the themes of quality, patient safety and hospital accreditation. The reading and the study start with Primary Health Care and the importance of this dimension to ensure the guarantee of care to the clientele, in line with the principles of the SUS. The chapters extend to the discussion of quality in the hospital environment, treating the process of hospital accreditation in Brazil, with experiences and practical experiences of professionals and organizations in the achievement of excellence. To achieve quality, the institutions need to go through a process of continuous improvement, because what we have in the Brazilian scenario is still a dynamic based on cost reduction and there is no priority on patient safety. These are barriers that need to be overcome to ensure a culture of quality and safety in health.

Ethics and Law for Australian Nurses
Every day, registered nurses are required to act and make decisions based on their moral and legal obligations. They must build professional, culturally safe relationships with patients, understand patient rights and the requirements of consent, and prevent and manage clinical mistakes in order to avoid negligence and abuse of power. Now in its fifth edition, Ethics and Law for Australian Nurses guides students through foundational concepts such as personhood, autonomy, trust, consent and vulnerability, and considers a nurse's responsibilities in relation to voluntary assisted dying, abortions and advanced care directives. It explains the Australian legal system and how it relates to nursing practice. This edition discusses the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, especially on elderly Australians, as well as on injury and negligence claims. It includes updated discussions on guardianship, assisted dying, abortion and 'not for resuscitation' orders.
Memoirs of a Midwife in Hungary
Is there anything in this world more precious than life itself? It follows then that the most gracious profession is to aid an expecting mother in the hours of her giving birth to a new life. M獺ria Sz矇csi practiced midwifery in the Great Hungarian Plain with the greatest diligence and self-devotion for almost thirty years. Her memoirs shed light on the rural life of 1930-40s Hungary and on the struggles and conditions of its people. "I never felt afraid; my only concern was to arrive in time!" The memoirist wrote these words referring to the occasions when she hurried in freezing snow, on pathless fields, in pitch dark, alone on the way to distant farms to provide aid to expecting mothers. But after all the hardships and struggles, could anybody really feel afraid while serving as an aid at the most gracious moment of the renascence of life and future?
Care and attention to Women's Health
This book, composed of a collection of course completion theses oriented by me, aims to develop a critical and attentive look at the health care of women, a social character of great importance because double working day, dividing her time between professional career and family care. Women have different physiology, cognition and behaviour from men, which promotes health problems that are characteristic of this public. With this book we seek the understanding of these problems and the search for physical and psychological well-being. I hope to develop in the reader knowledge that can help in the dynamics of caring for women's health.
Ethics and Pandemics
This book is for readers who wish to understand the ethical implications of the COVID-19 pandemic -- holistically -- on communities, politics, the economy, the environment, international relations, public health, and, most importantly, on their own lives and their own futures. It also helps readers to think through the wide-ranging ethical implications of the new age of global pandemics. The COVID-19 pandemic has transformed all of our lives to such an extent that no single publication will ever be able to capture its complexity. The book acknowledges this complexity by embracing interdisciplinary dialogue. It is open to diverse points of view, different ethical systems, and a wide variety of academic disciplines. It suggests three broad avenues to exploring the subject: Ethics for Pandemics: What ethical theories are useful for pandemic living?Ethics in Pandemics: How are long-standing ethical dilemmas revealed in pandemics? Ethics of Pandemics: How should politicians and public health professionals create ethical systems of pandemic management? Interdisciplinary perspectives are another key feature of the book and reflect the important insights that many academic disciplines -- medical ethics and public health, history, political science, economics, behavioral and evolutionary psychology, and climate science -- bring to bear on the subject. In the chapters, the author joins theory and practice, providing an overview of the major ethical theories: Kant and DeontologyUtilitarianism and Consequentialist EthicsSocial Contract TheoryEgoism and AltruismVirtue Ethics It then uses these theories to analyze both COVID-19 and also historical pandemics, including typhus, smallpox, the Black Death, HIV/AIDS, and polio. Ethics and Pandemics: Interdisciplinary Perspectives on COVID-19 and Future Pandemics prepares readers to better understand ethical living during times of crisis. While written for students pursuing any discipline, it is particularly suited for those seeking degrees in public health, health care, political science, and philosophy. Furthermore, non-specialized readers and members of the general public will find the book of interest.

The 1918 outbreak of the H1N1 strain of influenza, popularly known as the Spanish flu, killed more people worldwide than World War I, which ended the same year. It infected nearly one-third of the world's population and killed ten percent of those it struck. In its wake, schools and businesses closed, hospitals became overwhelmed, and the sick spilled out into makeshift care centers in public spaces. Policemen, public transportation workers, and everyday citizens in face masks were a common-and eerie-sight. Yet, discussion of this global pandemic often takes a backseat to World War I and other contemporary events. Reflective Practice, Third Edition
A nurse's work is multifaceted, medically complex, technically precise, and physically demanding. But nursing-the act of caring-is also social, emotional, impactful, and personal. Because nursing education programs prioritize the importance of the technical and physical aspects of nursing, that is what they teach. This leaves practicing nurses poorly equipped to understand the science of caring and unprepared for the constant stream of emotional and psychological stressors that come with this profoundly important work. The unintended consequences of this omission include burnout, toxic work environments, and exodus from the profession. In this highly anticipated and particularly timely third edition of Reflective Practice, authors Sara Horton-Deutsch and Gwen Sherwood invite readers to reflect, recalibrate, reimagine, rethink, and reframe the work of nursing care and their various roles and relationships within it. This book focuses first on the individual, then practice settings, and finally systems and communities while providing supporting theoretical frameworks, practical applications, and opportunities for personal and shared reflection along the way. Reflective Practice guides nurses to emotional and psychological fulfillment in all aspects of care.

At the Coalface
A heart-warming story of a woman who devoted her life to helping others. This is the memoir of Joan, who started nursing in the 1940s and whose experiences took her into the Yorkshire mining pits and through the tumult of the 1984-85 miners' strike. Joan Hart always knew what she wanted to do with her life. Born in South Yorkshire in 1932, she started her nursing training when she was 16, the youngest age girls could do so at the time. She continued working after she married and her work took her to London and Doncaster, caring for children and miners. When she took a job as a pit nurse in Doncaster in 1974, she found that in order to be accepted by the men under her care, she would have to become one of them. Most of the time rejecting a traditional nurse's uniform and donning a baggy miner's suit, pit boots, a hardhat and a headlamp, Joan resolved always to go down to injured miners and bring them out of the pit herself. Over 15 years Joan grew to know the miners not only as a nurse, but as a confidante and friend. She tended to injured miners underground, rescued men trapped in the pits, and provided support for them and their families during the bitter miners' strike which stretched from March 1984 to 1985. Moving and uplifting, this is a story of one woman's life, marriage and work; it is guaranteed to make readers laugh, cry, and smile.

Routledge International Handbook of Nurse Education
While vast numbers of nurses across the globe contribute in all areas of healthcare delivery from primary care to acute and long-term care in community settings, there are significant differences in how they are educated, as well as the precise nature of their practice. This comprehensive handbook provides a research-informed and international perspective on the critical issues in contemporary nurse education. As an applied discipline, nursing is implemented differently depending on the social, political and cultural climate in any given context. These factors impact on education, as much as on practice, and are reflected in debates around the value of accredited programmes, and on-the-job training, apprenticeship, undergraduate and postgraduate pathways into nursing. Engaging with these debates amongst others, the authors collected here discuss how, through careful design and delivery of nursing curricula, nurses can be prepared to understand complex care processes, complex healthcare technologies, complex patient needs and responses to therapeutic interventions, and complex organizations. The book discusses historical perspectives on how nurses should be educated; contemporary issues facing educators; teaching and learning strategies; the politics of nurse education; education for advanced nursing practice; global approaches; and educating for the future. Bringing together leading authorities from across the world to reflect on past, present and future approaches to nurse education and nursing pedagogy, this handbook provides a cutting-edge overview for all educators, researchers and policy-makers concerned with nurse education.

The Reproduction of Inequality
An important analysis of the difference class makes in reproductive health choices Can you run a marathon, drink coffee, eat fish, or fly on a plane while pregnant? Such questions are just the tip of the iceberg for how most pregnant women's bodies are managed, surveilled, and scrutinized during pregnancy. The Reproduction of Inequality examines the intense social pressure that expectant and new mothers face when it comes to their health and body-care choices. Drawing on interviews with dozens of pregnant women and new mothers from poor, middle-class, and mixed-class backgrounds, Katherine Mason paints a vivid picture of the immense weight of expectation that comes with the early stages of motherhood. The women in Mason's study universally sought to give their children a healthy start in life; however, their chosen approaches varied based on their socio-economic class. Whereas middle-class mothers attempted a complete lifestyle change and absolute devotion to the achievement and maintenance of "the healthy pregnant body," poorer women made strategic choices about which health goals to prioritize on a limited budget, lacking the economic and cultural capital required to speak and perfectly adhere to the language of "good health." The unfortunate result is that middle-class mothers are more likely to be seen by others and by themselves as "good" parents, whereas the efforts of working-class mothers are often misread as displaying inadequate concern about their health and that of their child. This in turn contributes to longstanding stereotypes about poor families and communities, and limits their children's chances for upward mobility. The Reproduction of Inequality is a compelling analysis of the impact of class on new mothers' approaches to health and wellness, and a sobering examination of how inequality shapes mothers' efforts to maximize their own health and that of their children.

Nurse leaders can either succumb to the churn or spot-and seize-a rare opportunity for true transfor-mation. They must thoughtfully consider all aspects of their traditional roles and tack-le trigger topics such as staffing, schedul-ing, value-based care, outcome tracking, and more. A Bold Profession
In rural South African clinics, Black nurses played critical roles. Charged with administering valuable and life-saving health care measures despite a lack of equipment and personnel, these nurses had to navigate the intersections of traditional African healing practices, changing gender relations, and increasing educational and economic opportunities for South Africa's Black middle class between the 1960s and 1980s. Leslie Anne Hadfield compellingly demonstrates how these women were able to successfully carve out their own professional space and reshape notions of health and healing in the Eastern Cape. Bringing forth the stories of these nurses in their own voices, A Bold Profession is an homage to their dedication to the well-being of their communities. Hadfield sheds light on the struggles of balancing commitment to career and family lives during an oppressive apartheid. The volume fills an important gap for scholars studying the history of women, nursing, and health care in South Africa, illuminating the humanity of health care workers.
Beyond Burnout, Second Edition
Healthcare professions typically attract those who give deeply of themselves to make a positive difference in others' lives. But that giving can come at a significant price: burnout. While the healthcare vocation offers myriad options in work settings and career paths, it can also involve tremendous amounts of stress because of long shifts, mental and physical exhaustion, patient challenges, and regulatory changes. When stress and fatigue overtake a healthcare provider's ability to adequately cope with physically and emotionally taxing circumstances, burnout is often the result, potentially leading to compromises in quality and patient safety. Since the publication of the first edition of this book, the COVID-19 pandemic has only added dramatically to nurses' and other healthcare providers' stress, exacerbating existing problems with strained resources and labor shortages. In Beyond Burnout, Second Edition, author Suzanne Waddill-Goad adds new strategies and up-to-date, data-driven information for building hardiness and resilience so that nurses and other healthcare workers can successfully navigate their increasingly challenging environment while reducing stress and preventing burnout.

A supervision model
The book presents a personal model of supervision developed by the author and based on her long experience as supervisor and university teacher in Sweden and in continental Europe. Working models by the author and other supervisors, and appreciated in supervision groups, are described in detail. Several quotes are given from supervisees within a range of activities. The book may be used of many professionals within various supervision activities: newcomers and students in supervision training will learn how a supervision model can be formed and developed. Those with more experience as a supervisor may be inspired to consciously reflect on their own style and get new clues on how to work in a different way. Supervisees may also benefit by taking part in experiences of others. Managers budgeting supervision may find useful information about how supervision can be perceived and experienced by the supervised. Procurers can also gain broader knowledge and take part in the experiences and expectations the supervised have of supervision and of the supervisor. Lilja Cajvert: "Through continuous reflection on experiences, a model has emerged. There is a meaning in what I do, a common thread, a thought, a theoretical idea. Supervision is a complex professional practice and too responsible, demanding and lonely work to be practiced without reflection and awareness of what you are doing, why and for what purpose". Lilja Cajvert is senior lecturer in social work, previously at Gothenburg University, Sweden. She is a social worker, licensed psychotherapist, supervisor and author. She has a long experience as teacher and supervisor for professionals within various occupations of care, social work and school. She is also working internationally as supervisor and lecturer.
