A Team Approach to Nursing Care Delivery
The United States now has one of the most severe labor shortages ever experienced in nursing and healthcare. Staff turnover and vacancy rates have skyrocketed even in the best health systems. The current nursing care delivery models rely on the availability of many nurses and are unsustainable. The gap between the number of nurses needed to practice primary nursing and the number of nurses available cannot be effectively bridged even with a significant ramp-up in enrollments and certainly not in a cost-effective way. Outside of a few specialty areas, future care delivery models will necessitate a team-based approach with professionals and support staff all working at the top of their scope of practice. While we once had the luxury of assigning nurses to non-nursing tasks, the situation has changed, and we no longer can. Yet, the transition to a team or collaborative care model is challenging despite the need. Most young nurses today lack the leadership skills to delegate care and manage a team of care providers. It will also require a change in mindset among nurses from thinking about "my patients" to "our patients" as nurses co-manage more patients. This book, A Team Approach to Nursing Care Delivery: Tactics for Working Better Together, provides a roadmap of what to consider as you redesign care and rebuild teams. In an easy-to-read format, each chapter in this book includes stories of challenges and successes that leaders have shared with me about team-based care delivery and efforts to promote effective teamwork. Let this book be your toolkit and practical guide to fostering effective team-based care delivery regardless of your clinical setting.

Mary Seacole
Mary Seacole: The Making of the Myth is the first book to challenge the popular misconceptions that surround Mary Seacole's iconic status as a "pioneer nurse" and battlefield heroine, intended, by some, to replace Florence Nightingale in those roles. McDonald masterfully disentangles reality from the myths, both those that exaggerate Seacole's work and ignore or denigrate Nightingale's. Drawing on the considerable primary sources available on both women, including letters and journal notes by officers, medical doctors and other observers during the Crimean War, as well as Seacole's own memoir, McDonald debunks claims that Seacole was the real heroine of the Crimean War and a pioneer of healthcare. Her book supports the recognition of Seacole for her life and work, but not as the decorated battlefield heroine as she is typically portrayed today.

Non-Coding RNA Transcripts in Cancer Therapy: Pre-Clinical and Clinical Implications
'Non-coding RNA Transcripts in Cancer Therapy: Pre-clinical and Clinical Implications' provides a new insight towards role of non-coding RNAs molecules including microRNAs, long non-coding RNAs and circular RNAs in cancer. The reason of focusing on cancer is that this malignant disease is responsible for high death around the world and after cardiovascular diseases, it is a leading cause of death. In the current book, the basic information and knowledge about ncRNAs, their biogenesis and their biological functions are covered. It is shown that ncRNAs can regulate expression level of genes at transcriptional and post-transcriptional levels and therefore, ncRNAs are master and key players in molecular pathways. Then, the impact of regulation of molecular pathways by ncRNAs on important molecular mechanisms such as proliferation, metastasis, epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition, apoptosis and autophagy are described. All of these aspects are integrated in cancer and for treatment of this disease. In case of miRNAs, their biogenesis and biological functions in physiological conditions are described. Then, impact of miRNAs on proliferation, metastasis, therapy response (drug resistance and radio-resistance) is described. For lncRNAs and circRNAs, a same way is followed and their biogenesis and functional roles in cells are discussed. At the next step, function of lncRNAs and circRNAs in regulating proliferation, metastasis and therapy response (chemoresistance and radio-resistance) is introduced. These subjects are discussed based on pre-clinical studies and in order to make the book more comprehensive and broaden its scope, the function of exosomal ncRNAs in diagnosis and prognosis of cancer patients is described.

Ageing in a Nursing Home
Spending the final chapter of your life in a nursing home is considered, by many, a fate worse than death. Others, however, have found that through enlightened, imaginative care even the frailest of lives can flourish. The key to such a transformation is to replace the constricting custodial centres of the past with a more informed, research-based approach. This book is timely, responding to evidence of the urgent need for change described in the Australian Royal Commission into Aged Care Quality and Safety Final Report: Care, Dignity and Respect and its predecessor subtitled Neglect. In this book, the author proposes a model of care that places the whole person at its centre, sidestepping the constraints of a reductionist funding model that focusses on residents' deficits - and the proprietor's financial gain. Aged care requires a comprehensive research-based guide to fulfil this aim. Narratives are included throughout the book to reinforce the fact that nursing home care is about individual residents and their unique lives. Topics explored in various chapters include: - Ageing in a Changing Community- Social, Gerontological Care- A Palliative Approach- Community Expectations Ageing in a Nursing Home: Foundations for Care takes a realistic approach that draws on contemporary research and narratives from the unique lives of older Australians who, despite their frailty, teach us how to care. Such knowledge informs and influences their future. The book is a resource intended for all who have a stake in the provision of best practice residential aged care, and all who benefit from such care. Its academic appeal will include those who design and teach courses in aged care: gerontology, general practice medicine, nursing, attendant care, allied health, and chaplaincy. Academics and teachers will find useful, well-referenced material for their courses, together with ample scope for researchers.

Developing Your Compassion Strengths
This practical book suggests ways in which healthcare students and practitioners can develop their compassion strengths.Discussing what compassion is and means, it includes a new compassion strength model and a series of exercises the reader can use for reflecting on and developing their practice. A hallmark of healthcare practice is compassion, yet there is a lack of understanding as to what compassion is and how it can be developed in practice. The book begins with the challenge of defining compassion, particularly looking at healthcare contexts and making links between self-care and caring for others. It then presents a new, evidence-based holistic model that brings together key elements of compassion for self and other, along with a scale that readers can measure themselves against. Identifying eight strengths "self-care, connection, communication, competency, empathy, interpersonal skills, character, and engagement" Durkin provides the theoretical background to each, accompanied with suggestions for practice and reflective activities. It ends with a selection of vignettes that readers can use to try out their strengths. Highlighting the concept of compassion strengths, and compassion as a way of being, this is an essential read for healthcare students and practitioners, whether involved in direct patient care or management.

Concept Analysis in Nursing
Concept analysis is an established genre of inquiry in nursing, introduced in the 1970s. Currently, over 100 concept studies are published annually, yet the methods used within this field have rarely been questioned. In Concept Analysis in Nursing: A New Approach, Paley provides a critical analysis of the philosophical assumptions that underpin nursing's concept analysis methods. He argues, provocatively, that there are no such things as concepts, as traditionally conceived. Drawing on Wittgenstein and Construction Grammar, the book first makes a case for dispensing with the traditional concept of a 'concept', and then provides two examples of a new approach, examining the use of 'hope' and 'moral distress'. Casting doubt on the assumption that 'hope' always stands for an 'inner' state of the person, the book shows that the word's function varies with the grammatical construction it appears in. Similarly, it argues that 'moral distress' is not the name of a mental state, but a normative classification used to bolster a narrative concerning nursing's identity. Concept Analysis in Nursing is a fresh and challenging book written by a philosopher interested in nursing. It will appeal to researchers and postgraduate students in the areas of nursing, health, philosophy and linguistics. It will also interest those familiar with the author's previous book, Phenomenology as Qualitative Research.
Grading Student Midwives' Practice
This book investigates the education and assessment of student midwives in clinical practice, paying particular attention to how their practice is graded. Chenery-Morris brings primary research, which explores students, mentors, and midwifery lecturers perspectives of practice learning and its assessment, together with the international literature on clinical knowledge, teaching and learning in practice and assessment of students drawn from a range of healthcare and education professions. Discussing how practice is graded, what constitutes valid practice knowledge, learning in clinical practice, evaluating practice learning and failing students, this book uses Basil Bernstein's theories to throw light on how we assess and whether we should assess performance in addition to whether a student is competent to practise. This is an important contribution to the field of midwifery education. It will also be relevant to those with an interest in practice education from a range of healthcare professions.
