Securing the Prize
How presidential metaphors have shaped US discourse on the Persian Gulf From the 1970s to the 1990s American presidents and their advisers introduced four metaphors into foreign-policy discourse that taught Americans to view the Persian Gulf as a vulnerable region and site of US responsibility on the world stage. In Securing the Prize: Presidential Metaphor and US Intervention in the Persian Gulf, Randall Fowler argues that, for half a century, metaphor has been central to defining America's role in the Middle East. Metaphors served as shorthand for presidents to promote their policies, filtering through the judgments of officials, journalists, experts, and critics to mediate American perceptions of the Gulf War. Tracing the use of security metaphors from President Richard Nixon to President George W. Bush, Fowler revises mainstream understandings regarding the origins of the War on Terror and explains the disconnect between skeptical public attitudes toward US involvement in the Gulf War and the heavy American military footprint in the region.

Bye Bye I Love You
A beautiful and intimate exploration of first and last words--and the many facets of how language begins and ends--from a pioneering language writer. With our earliest utterances, we announce ourselves--and are recognized--as persons ready for social life. With our final ones, we mark where others must release us to death's embrace. In Bye Bye I Love You, linguist and author Michael Erard explores these phenomena, commonly called "first words" and "last words," uncovering their cultural, historical, and biological entanglements and honoring their deep private significance. Erard draws from personal, historical, and anthropological sources to provide a sense of the breadth of beliefs and practices about these phenomena across eras, religions, and cultures around the world. What do babies' first words have in common? How do people really communicate at the end of life? In the first half of the book, Erard tells the story of first words in human development and evolution, and how the attention to children's early language--a modern phenomenon--arose. In the second half, he provides a groundbreaking overview of language at the end of life and the cultural conventions that surround it. Throughout he reveals the many parallels and asymmetries between first and last words and asks whether we might be able to use a linguistic understanding of end of life to discover what we truly want.

Language, Image, Gesture
Politics is an inherently symbolic practice. This innovative book advances a framework for the critical analysis of political texts and talk based in cognitive linguistics. Through detailed analyses of attested semiotic practices, it provides a current, comprehensive and authoritative statement on the paradigm of Cognitive Critical Discourse Analysis (Cognitive CDA). The ideological effects of dominant conceptualisations and their implications for the legitimation of social action are explored with reference to political topics that have defined the last decade, including immigration, the rise of nationalism, the right to protest, Brexit and Covid-19. A range of conceptual phenomena are addressed, including image schematic patterning, attentional distribution, viewpoint and metaphor, as they feature in various contexts, genres and modes of political discourse. In a major advancement of the paradigm, the book extends Cognitive CDA to images and gesture to consider the role played by multiple semiotic modes in the discursive performance of politics.

Cancellation of Illocutionary Force Potential
This book investigates the general cancellability of illocutionary force potential through a systematic exploration conducted along three main lines. Firstly, it addresses significant divergences in previous literature on meaning cancellation to uncover their fundamental causes and reconcile differing viewpoints. Secondly, it establishes a comprehensive taxonomy of illocutionary force potential based on a thorough review of previous classifications and an understanding of the characteristic features of illocutionary force. Thirdly, it examines the variation in the degree of cancellability among illocutionary forces of varying strengths and their implications for real-life communication. The study distinguishes between two senses of illocutionary force potential cancellation: failure to actualize an illocutionary force and cancellation of an actualized illocutionary force through explicit or contextual means. It emphasizes the need for analyses of cancellability across three dimensions: literalness, speaker's intention, and addressees' intention, among other potential factors. Two depictions of cancellability are delineated: a static depiction based on classic Gricean criteria for consistent judgments and a dynamic depiction based on revised criteria that consider contextual use. Ultimately, this study aims to advance research on the nature of illocutionary force and deepen understanding of meaning cancellation, contributing to the broader discourse on ordinary language meaning in diverse communication contexts.

The Words of Robotics
The Words of Robotics addresses how scientific and technological advancements shape the words and expressions that form the basis of humans' representations and stories. Focusing on how the movements of robots are perceived and described in everyday language, C矇line Pieters highlights both the potential and the challenges of the discourses about robotics, through a rhetorical approach. This approach allows one to go beyond the reductionisms of either overstating the abilities and power of robots or reducing the discourse to a specialized, mere technical language.
