The Mana of Translation
In The Mana of Translation: Translational Flow in Hawaiian History from the Baibala to the Mauna, Bryan Kamaoli Kuwada makes visible the often unseen workings of translation in Hawaiʻi from the advent of Hawaiian alphabetic literacy to contemporary struggles over language and land. Translation has had a massive impact on Hawaiian history, both as it unfolded and how it came to be understood, yet it remains understudied in Hawaiian and Indigenous scholarship. In an engaging and wide-ranging analysis, Kuwada examines illuminative instances of translation across the last two centuries through the analytic of mana unuhi: the mana (power/authority/branch/version) attained or given through translation. Translation has long been seen as a tool of colonialism, but examining history through mana unuhi demonstrates how Hawaiians used translation as a powerful tool to assert their own literary, cultural, and political sovereignty, something Hawaiians think of in terms of ea (life/breath/sovereignty/rising). Translation also gave mana to particular stories about Hawaiians--some empowering, others harmful--creating a clash of narratives that continue to this day. Drawing on sources in Hawaiian and English that span newspapers, letters and journals, religious and legal documents, missionary records, court transcripts, traditional stories, and more, this book makes legible the utility and importance of paying attention to mana unuhi in Hawaiʻi and beyond. Through chapters on translating the Hawaiian Bible, the role of translation in the Hawaiian Kingdom's bilingual legal system, Hawaiians' powerful deployment of translation in nineteenth-century nūpepa (newspapers), the early twentieth-century era of extractive scholarly translation, and the possibilities that come from refusing translation as demonstrated in legal proceedings related to the protection of Maunakea, Kuwada questions narratives about the inevitability of colonial victory and the idea that things can only be "lost in translation." Writing in an accessible yet rigorous style, Kuwada follows the flows of translation and its material practices to bring forth the power dynamics of languages and how these differential forces play out on ideological and political battlefields. Specifically rooted in Hawaiʻi yet broadly applicable to other colonial situations, The Mana of Translation provides us with a transformative new way of looking at Hawaiian history.

Women in Independent Publishing
Women in Independent Publishing is a collection of interviews with and resources about women actively engaged in small-press publishing between the 1950s and the 1980s. The interviewees include Hettie Jones, Margaret Randall, Bernadette Mayer, and many others. The scope and range of the interviews showcase a variety of types of publishing possible within the small press community. These interviews illuminate the unifying and diverging elements between multiple publishing "scenes" and reveal their particularities and commonalities. Women in Independent Publishing is a timely and urgent documentation of literary history and reveals and celebrates the multifaceted roles of women editors and publishers and the communities they built. The book includes a critical introduction, an afterword by contemporary small-press publisher M. C. Hyland and a robust resources section that provides further paths for reading and literary recovery.
Garab oral literature and the representation of vulnerable characters
Garab oral literature, rich in traditional tales called sigi, offers a fascinating window into the culture and values of this community. These tales often feature vulnerable characters facing challenges and adversity. By analyzing the way these characters are portrayed, we can better understand the themes and messages conveyed by this form of oral literature. Sigi depict a wide range of vulnerable characters: abused children, orphans and abandoned children, widows and exploited women, the elderly and the sick, strangers and social outcasts, even executioners who become vulnerable in the end. These characters are often discriminated against, abused or scorned by the community and by cynical or sadistic predators. Their vulnerability is physical, social, economic and psychological. In sigi, vulnerable characters often play a central role in the plot.

Echoes of memory
This book is the result of a master's thesis that sought to analyse Umberto Eco's 2004 illustrated novel The Mysterious Flame of Queen Loana. Based on studies of memory and identity within the work, it provides an overview of the construction of Eco's narrative and its unfolding in terms of content, observing the peculiarities of the construction of time-space and the narrator-character and, in this way, finds a parallel between the history of the novel and the history of the composition of Italian identity. It addresses the themes of the Second World War and its influence on the construction of the Italian ideology, as well as the influence of Pop Art on the construction of the narrative, which is related to the era in which it is set, as well as drawing a confluent line between the concepts of individual memory, collective memory and plant memory, the latter being a concept of the author of the novel himself. What this analysis proposes is confirmation of the relationship between the author, the work and the reader, who are the components of the narrative pyramid that gives the work its full meaning. In this way, the interpretation of a literary text is relativised, and this is one of the possible analyses of this rich novel.

Fostering English Language Learners' Speaking Skills
Most of the time, when thinking about learning a foreign language, we immediately think of someone who can provide us with the appropriate tools for learning it successfully: a teacher. If being a teacher means to provide, therefore being a learner probably means to receive. This one-way relationship seems logical and effective at first sight; nevertheless, when this giving-receiving relationship makes the learner a passive actor instead of an active performer of the language, the learning experience is incomplete. This work proposes Project Based Learning (PBL) strategies and Communicative Activities as an effective way to foster English language learners' speaking skills. Framed by the Action Research approach, this study explores the impact that PBL and communicative activities have in student's speaking skills.
Translation and Community
Community, or Public Service, Translation contributes to a more equitable and sustainable community by empowering minority groups such as migrants and refugees and is a growing area for both teaching and research within Translation studies.

The Tunisian dialect, prey to a neo-colonial Francophonie
Today, rising illiteracy rates, school drop-outs, falling diploma levels and enslaving economic dependence on Paris contribute to linguistic incompetence and reduced use of the Arabic language of identity. This context facilitates the infiltration of neo-colonial Francophonie into a "corrupted" Tunisian dialect through borrowing, transfer and interference.

Applying Vladimir Propp's Morphology of the Folktale in Nicholas Spark
According to narratologists, Vladimir Propp's "Morphology of the Folktale" is generally recognized as one of the most inspiring contributions to "the understanding of plot structure" (Sundari, 2014, p.1). Therefore, Propp's theory was initially found to analyze Russian folktales. However, some researchers apply it to fairytales, such as Sundari (2014), who used it in "Sleeping Beauty," and Nursantia (2003), who used it in Joseph Conrad's novel "Heart of Darkness." Salmah (2004) applied Propp's theory to Charles Dickens's "Our Mutual Friend" in his thesis. Thus, the lack of using Propp's "Morphology of the Folktale" in studying novels in general and modern fiction in specific inspires the researcher to fill this gap in the study by using Vladimir Propp's "Morphology of the Folktale" on the contemporary novels.

Translating the Future
We have entered into the era of artificial intelligence, neural machine translation, and especially large language models which have dramatically changed the landscape of human translation practices. On the one hand, translation technology has remarkably improved translation efficiency and reduced the cost of translation; on the other, it has brought about some issues related to translation quality, translator competence, translation ethics, and so on. The eight chapters in this volume can be divided into two groups: the contributions by Chinese authors and those by authors from other countries. Among the Chinese contributors, Wang Fang makes a comparative study of the Chinese-English translations by ChatGPT Translate and Baidu Translate, concluding that ChatGPT's human-computer interaction-based translation will bring new insights from the AI era to translation practitioners, translation learners, and technology developers. Yang Qiong makes a case study of the genre-based manual quality evaluation of Chinese-English translations produced by Google Translate, Baidu Translate, Sogou Translate, Youdao Translate, and human translators, suggesting that machine translation developers should leverage advanced AI language technology to develop an AI-assisted MT training system capable of interpreting nuances for more sophisticated translations. Zhang Junchi explores the use of ChatGPT in translation teaching, suggesting that neither teachers nor students should rely on ChatGPT too much, they have to think independently and judge whether the information is desirable, and a correct understanding of the interaction between translation teaching and technology should be fostered. Wang Juan makes a CiteSpace-based bibliometric analysis of the Web of Science (WoS) core collection publication (2000-2024) on translation technology, highlighting prominent scholars and institutions, foundational literature, thematic areas, developmental trajectories, and prospective directions in the realm of translation technology. Cui Cui investigates the Chinese student interpreters' usage intention of ChatGPT-assisted translation with Q methodology, providing some pedagogical implications of learning interpreting for university students. As far as the contributors from other countries are concerned, Adelinde H. Meyer explores AI-powered quality assurance (QA) tools and techniques, reviewing how AI and ML refine translation quality management, examining the implications of AI in translation for stakeholders like translators, clients, and academics, and focusing on the challenges and prospects AI brings to the translation industry. Prateek Kumar reviews the main types of MT that have been proposed and developed over time: rule-based, statistical, hybrid, and neural MT, aiming to present an overview of the state-of-the-art in MT, identify key challenges and issues that MT faces today and tomorrow, and outline some possible ways out of them. Ecrin Yilmaz discusses how AI technologies, especially machine translation and natural language processing, have transformed the landscape of translation quality by making available automated support tools to translators, explaining the evolving roles of translators and clients, as well as AI acting as a mediator, pointing out some challenges, such as ethics considerations, data privacy, and biases, as well as some opportunities such as multilingual content creation and cross-cultural communications. It is hoped that this volume can provide some insights into the impact of technology and AI on translation research, and push forward the development of contemporary Translation Studies. Vincent van Gogh is considered one of the world's greatest painters, his work having had a huge and far-reaching influence on 20th-century art as well as remaining visually and emotionally powerful to this day. In this painting the brightly lit caf矇 radiates with warmth and inviting light, becoming a beacon of yellow set against the rich, dark blue of a night sky, which in turn is illuminated by myriad bright stars. Van Gogh attached the colour yellow to feelings of religious inspiration, light and happiness.

Literacy as Conversation
In Literacy as Conversation, the authors tell stories of successful literacy learning outside of schools and inside communities, both within urban neighborhoods of Philadelphia and rural and semi-rural towns of Arkansas. They define literacy not as a basic skill but as a rich, broadly interactive human behavior: the ability to engage in a conversation carried on, framed by, or enriched through written symbols. Eli Goldblatt takes us to after-school literacy programs, community arts centers, and urban farms in the city of Philadelphia, while David Jolliffe explores learning in a Latinx youth theater troupe, a performance based on the words of men on death row, and long-term cooperation with a rural health care provider in Arkansas. As different as urban and rural settings can be--and as beset as they both are with the challenges of historical racism and economic discrimination--the authors see much to encourage both geographical communities to fight for positive change.

Exploring the fantastic in French-language West African fiction
Based on a corpus of eleven novels, this study of the fantastic in the modern Francophone West African novel analyzes the specificity of an African fantastic nourished by oral literature. Unlike Western fantasy, which focuses on surprise, fear and hesitation, African fantasy is distinguished by its hybridity, reflecting the multicultural and intercultural nature of African writers. It is characterized by Black-African aesthetics, intertextuality, African onomastics, the exploitation of oral genres and the integration of sacred texts. Its function, both literary and social, enables it to bypass censorship and deal with taboo subjects to raise readers' awareness.
LIMERICKS History, Humor, and How-To
Kevin DiBacco's "Limericks: History, Humor, and How-To" presents a thorough examination of the limerick as both an art form and practical tool. The book traces the evolution of these five-line verses from their medieval monastic roots through Irish pub culture, Victorian refinement under Edward Lear, and into the digital age. The guide is structured to serve multiple audiences, from educators to professional writers to casual enthusiasts. It begins with fundamental instruction in limerick construction, including rhythm, rhyme schemes, and structural requirements, before expanding into specialized applications. The book showcases how limericks can enhance learning across disciplines, from mathematics and science to language and history. Particularly notable is the book's exploration of modern applications, including professional settings, social media, and digital platforms. It features extensive examples across various themes, from seasonal and holiday verses to occupation-specific limericks for different professions. Regional variations and cultural adaptations demonstrate the form's global reach and versatility. The work concludes with a forward-looking perspective on how limericks might evolve with new technologies while maintaining their essential characteristics of wit, brevity, and memorable rhythm. A dialogue between swans
This paper seeks to establish a dialogue between the imagery of the swan in Piotr Ilich Tchaikovsky's Swan Lake and Darren Aronofsky's Black Swan. The interpretative analysis looks at the symbolism of the bird and its colours from the perspective of the transformation from a binary view of Good vs Evil, present in the ballet, to a hermaphrodite perspective of the swan proposed by the film, which highlights the process of its metamorphosis. Based on a post-structuralist conception, the works are analysed as translations which, while maintaining the link with their predecessor, operate transformations resulting from the act of reading and interpretation by the translating subject. Starting from the fairy tale The Stolen Veil by the German Johann Musaeus, which is configured as the anteriority of the works in question, the research analyses the traces and transformations that occur in the intersemiotic translation process, addressing the presence of archetypes, according to the reflections of C.G. Jung. By presenting a mosaic between fairy tale, ballet and film, we problematise structuralist concepts, Platonic metaphysical perspectives and essentialist theories that govern the comparative relationship between the works.
Retranslating the Bible and the Qur'an
Despite the lively scholarly discourse on retranslation and its manifest value for uncovering dynamics of cultural change, interpretation, and reception, the retranslation of religious texts has received only fragmented attention in recent years. By spanning both historical and current aspects, and by treating the Bible - both Jewish and Christian - and the Qur'an together, this book breaks new ground and paves the way for future research on the myriad discursive and religious aspects of retranslation. This carefully curated collection of articles compellingly argues that the retranslation of canonical religious texts is a multi-faceted phenomenon. With cases ranging in time from the early Reformation to the present, and traversing linguistic contexts from Russia to Sweden, Slovenia to Saudi Arabia, the essays capture diverse dimensions of retranslation work. The collection demonstrates that retranslations of such texts manifest in different forms, depending on the religious, political and societal circumstances, the targeted audiences, and the status of existing translations. Their reception too may vary highly, depending on circumstances. Authored by specialists in the different fields of retranslation of the Bible and the Qur'an, each contribution outstandingly illustrates this complexity and offers fresh perspectives and innovative insights that help lay the groundwork for future research in this area of study.Contributors: Naima Afif (University of Copenhagen), Pieter Boulogne (KU Leuven), Helge Dani禱ls (KU Leuven), Sameh Hanna (United Bible Societies), Yazid Haroun (University of Birmingham), Rim Hassen (independent scholar), Hilla Karas (Bar-Ilan University), Elvira Kulieva (University of Freiburg), Marijke H. de Lang (United Bible Societies), Christian Moe (independent scholar), Johanna Pink (University of Freiburg), Richard Pleijel (Stockholm University), Sohaib Saeed (Ibn 'Ashur Centre for Quranic Studies), Alexey B. Writing, Thinking, and the Brain
"Readers will not only gain ideas for instruction, they will also better understand the underlying cognitive processes associated with written communications." --Jay McTighe, consultant and coauthor of Assessing Student Learning by DesignWriting, Thinking, and the Brain exposes the invisible thinking behind writing to help both the teacher and the learner identify personal learning trajectories for better outcomes.Writing is the highest form of thinking, as evidenced by neuroimaging that shows how more neural networks are activated simultaneously during writing than during any other cognitive activity. This book will help teachers understand how the brain learns to write by unveiling 15 stages of thinking that underpin the writing process, along with targeted ways to stimulate them to maximize each individual's writing potential. This one-of-a-kind resource is constructed on the premise that everyone has the potential to be a great writer. Many people learn to write in school settings according to a product-based structure in which they get feedback or a grade on an outline, draft, or final version of their work; few are coached on the many hours of thinking that go into that writing process. This book celebrates the invisible thinking behind the products, explains the brain's way of making sense of writing assignments even in light of generative AI, and offers new tools to become a better writer and to assess the writing process.Book Features: Spans all literary genres and all age groups and is complementary to any curriculum.Builds on the firm foundation of writing practices of the past with insight from the learning sciences.Practical and accessible examples and illustrations throughout.Written in the voice of a supportive, knowledgeable colleague.Linked directly to Mind, Brain, and Education goals.Leverages Universal Design for Learning (UDL) principles.Offers teacher activities at all 15 stages of thinking with guidelines to support student learning. For additional resources, check out ThinkWriteMBE.com.
Behaviour Beyond the Text and the Morality Clause in Twenty-First-Century Publishing
A morality clause allows contracting parties to terminate a contractual agreement with those who exhibit behaviour deemed unacceptable. Established in 1920s Hollywood, these contractual clauses are now found in twenty-first-century publishing agreements. This Element investigates the presence of the morality clause in the UK book publishing industry in relation to an increased focus on author behaviour beyond the text in the twenty-first-century, examining the way it operates within the publishing field in the context of behaviour perceived to be 'problematic'. It asserts the clause is perceived to be needed due to the emergence of social media and twenty-first-century social contexts combining to impact the author-reader relationship which, in turn, leads to author behaviour acting as a paratextual threshold to their work. This Element presents an analysis of the morality clause in practice, concluding the clause has the potential to further the power imbalance between author and publisher.

Teaching Interpreting and Live Subtitling
Teaching Interpreting and Live Subtitling: Contexts, Modes and Technologies provides a cross section of multinational perspectives on teaching various dimensions of interpreting and live subtitling, both within dedicated programmes and as part of individual modules on interpreting and/or live subtitling-adjacent programmes.Interpreting training and live subtitling training have been undergoing rapid and far-reaching transformations in recent years because of technological advances and the sweeping shifts in the contexts within which they seek to mediate, ultimately bringing about new modes. This volume covers the broad spectrum of interpreting and live subtitling trainings and discusses the possibility of how a more unified approach to training for live subtitlers and interpreters could lead to a future where the topics merge to become a single, complementary specialised stream of training that brings live subtitling equally into the forefront of the translation teaching field. The book provides an overview of the role played by technology in interpreting in general and uses up-to-date perspectives and research to ensure that interpreting and live subtitling training remains robust and resilient far into the 21st century. It will be of particular interest to professionals, scholars and teachers of translation studies and interpreting studies.
Linguistic Change and Variation in Comics
Comic books go through ups and downs. At times they are popular as a stimulus to reading, at others they are hated by academics for being literature for the lazy. In the early 2000s, they returned to the spotlight. Faced with this situation, we decided to trace a panorama of the Ninth Art until we reached the Graphic Novel PAVOR ESPACIAR, by the cartoonist Gustavo Duarte, to describe the linguistic change and variation he seeks to represent through the so-called "caipira speech", which retains linguistic traits from the 18th and 19th centuries.

Reflective teacher training
This book brings together four chapters that address issues related to the role of reflection in teacher training and in the process of professional development. The book discusses various topics related to teacher training, with special emphasis on the space allocated to reflection in undergraduate programmes and in opportunities to begin teaching practice. The book reflects on the importance of teacher training courses encouraging teachers to reflect on issues related to classroom practice. It also reiterates the need for teaching professionals to invest in their professional development, since reflective training is, in fact, a process that is forever under construction.
Publishing from the South
In 2022 Wits University Press marked its centenary, making it the oldest, most established university press in sub-Saharan Africa. While in part modelled on scholarly publishers from the global North, it has had to contend with the constraints of working under global South conditions: marginalisation within the university, budgetary limitations, small local markets, unequal access to international sales channels, and the privileging of English language publishing over indigenous languages. This volume explores what the Press has achieved, and what its modes of reinvention might look like. In widening and deepening our understanding of the Press as an example of a global South scholarly publisher, this volume asks how publishing can contribute to a broader understanding of Southern knowledge production. Featuring contributions from scholars, publishers and authors this multi-voiced volume showcases the history of the Press's publishing activities over 100 years: from documenting its evolution through book covers and giving credence to some of the leading black intellectuals and writers of the early 20th century and the success of those works in spite of their authors' racial marginalisation, to the role of women, both in publishing and in the spaces afforded to women's writing on the Press's list. The collection concludes with essays by contemporary authors who detail not only their experiences of working with Southern publishers, but also the politics and influences governing their decisions to choose the Press over a Northern publisher. Publishing from the South shows the strategies deployed by the Press to professionalise Southern knowledge making, and in the process demonstrating how university presses in the global South support the scholarly missions of their universities for both local and global audiences.
