Presents the art of light in all its facets from artist Brigitte Kowanz. "What is light?" is the central question of Brigitte Kowanz's oeuvre. "Light is what we see" is her answer. It makes everything visible, yet remains invisible itself. Kowanz engages with this paradox in her light-based art. Using materials such as mirrors, black light, neon tubes, and glass bottles, Kowanz created objects and spatial artworks in which she staged light. This volume offers a retrospective experience of her oeuvre: alongside the central works, it includes iconic pieces showing that, even in the 1980s, she was engaging with topics that are current today, such as digitalization and new communication media in an information society.
Extinction
'Extinction' is a courtroom drama exploring themes of power, money and self-survival of all living organisms. The adjudicating panel includes the Democratic Counsel, Theocratic Counsel (an angel) the Voice of the Almighty, and a quirky scientist, Dr Sciencestein.Participants on trial represent different nations, told from various perspectives. Actors take on multiple roles, using props to shift between characters on the World Panel. Testimony is given by penguins, gorillas, insects, and homo sapiens.Grounded in fact and environmental evidence, the play blends acting, song and dance. Its organic nature encourages performers to explore and expand on current environmental themes, while engaging audiences with thought-provoking material.As a dramatic work, it allows for creative use of sound, lighting, slides and choreography - giving performers scope to experiment with special effects while developing performance and movement skills.Music not available at this time. Temptations 1960 to 1978
As one of the greatest acts to come out of the Motown Record Corporation, the influence of the Temptations cannot be overstated. Their catalogue of classic hits and their performances have set the standard for all male groups that followed. The 'Classic Five' line-up of Otis Williams, Melvin Franklin, Paul Williams, Eddie Kendricks and David Ruffin created a legacy that has endured to this day. Aided by William 'Smokey' Robinson, and later Norman Whitfield, the group had hits such as 'Get Ready', 'Ain't Too Proud To Beg', and, of course, 'My Girl'. This line-up only lasted four years, but they created such an impressive legacy and following that the group has been able to carry on until the present day. The introduction to the group of Dennis Edwards in 1968 coincided with a new style of music for the group, produced by Whitfield, dubbed 'psychedelic soul', inspired by Sly & The Family Stone, that gave the group a second act of new hits. However, by 1972, only Otis Williams and Melvin Franklin would remain from the 'Classic Five' line-up and the hits were becoming more elusive. This book explores their releases from their founding to 1978, when the group had endured further personnel changes and a change in record label. It examines the group's triumphs and struggles during this period, and tells a remarkable story of persistence and longevity.
