Oz and the Musical
From the first stage production of The Wizard of Oz in 1902, to the classic MGM film (1939), to the musicals The Wiz (1975) and Wicked (2003), L. Frank Baum's children's novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz (1900) has served as the basis for some of the most popular musicals on stage and screen. In this book, musical theater scholar Ryan Bunch draws on his personal experience as an Oz fan to explore how a story that has been hailed as "the American fairy tale" serves as a guide for thinking about the art form of the American musical and how both reveal American identity to be a utopian performance. Show by show, Bunch highlights the forms and conventions of each musical work as practiced in its time and context-such as the turn-of-the-century extravaganza, the classical Hollywood film musical, the Black Broadway musical of the 1970s, and the twenty-first-century mega-musical. He then shows how the journey of each show teaches participants and audiences something about how to act American within contested frameworks of race, gender, sexuality, age, and embodiment. Bunch also explores home theatricals, make-believe play, school musicals, Oz-themed environments, and community events as sites where the performance of the American fairy tale brings home and utopia into contact through the conventions of the musical. Using close readings of the various Oz shows, personal reflections, and interviews with fans, audiences, and performers, Bunch demonstrates how adapted Oz musicals imply both inclusions and exclusions in the performance of an American utopia.
Haight-Ashbury, Psychedelics, and the Birth of Acid Rock
Illuminates the beginnings, downfall, and legacy of the acid-inspired, spontaneous, and playful approach to life and music in Haight-Ashbury from 1964-1967.Combining literature, social history, and personal experience, author Robert J. Campbell traces the birth, downfall, and legacy of the innovative, playful, and spontaneous counterculture launched in 1960s Haight-Ashbury. In a lively writing style, Campbell describes the discovery of LSD, its slow adoption, and the promotion of it by Timothy Leary and Ken Kesey, who each became missionaries for the drug. Campbell relates how LSD allowed users to enhance the perception of alternative realities and describes its wide-scale use in the Haight-Ashbury District of San Francisco from 1964 to 1967 that led to imaginative and creative change, including collaborative behavior, a new way of looking at the world, acid rock, and a host of other paradigm shifts. Haight-Ashbury, Psychedelics, and the Birth of Acid Rock concludes by examining the inherent dangers of constant drug use as well as the positive legacy of the 1960s, including a focus on health food, cooperative living arrangements, recycling, battling climate change, free medical help, and personal responsibility. The book incorporates ideas from a broad range of disciplines for general readers for a unique and fresh look at this impactful era.

Jazz Fiction
Jazz Fiction: Take Two is the sequel to Jazz Fiction: A History and Comprehensive Reader's Guide (2008). The earlier work filled a pressing need in jazz studies by identifying and discussing 700 works of fiction with a jazz component. Take Two surveys over 500 newer works of jazz-inflected fiction that have appeared from the turn of the 21st century to the present. The essay-reviews at the heart of the book give readers a sense of the plot of each surveyed work and characterizes its debt to jazz. The entries are written with both general readers and scholars in mind and are intended to entertain as well as inform. This alone qualifies Jazz Fiction: Take Two as an original and useful resource. Sascha Feinstein, Founding Editor of Brilliant Corners: A Journal of Jazz and Literature and several books on jazz, says of Jazz Fiction: Take Two: "With this companion volume to Jazz Fiction, David Rife enhances his position as an indispensable scholar of jazz-related fiction. The copious entries-each written not only with deft concision but irresistible linguistic flair-provide the kind of insight that only someone profoundly well-read in the genre could cultivate. One could not ask for a more delightful guide."
Listening to the Music the Machines Make
Listening to the Music the Machines Make is the enthralling, explosive story of the golden age of electronic pop, between 1978 and 1983.This definitive book explores how krautrock, disco, glam rock, and punk inspired an electronic pop revolution and how that revolution went on to establish the foundations for hip-hop, house, and EDM.Drawing on years of research and with exclusive input from key figures--including Vince Clarke (Depeche Mode, Yazoo, Erasure), Martyn Ware (The Human League, Heaven 17), Dave Ball (Soft Cell), John Foxx (Ultravox), Daniel Miller (The Normal, Mute Records) and Rusty Egan (Visage)--Richard Evans tells the stories of the movement's underground pioneers and its superstars: from Devo, The Normal, Telex, and Cabaret Voltaire to Gary Numan, OMD, Duran Duran, and Depeche Mode.
”This Is America”
In "This Is America" Race, Gender, and Politics in America's Musical Landscape, Katie Rios argues that prominent American artists and musicians build encoded gestures of resistance into their works and challenge the status quo. These artists offer both an interpretation and a critique of what "This Is America" means. Using Childish Gambino's video for "This Is America" as a starting point, Rios considers how elements including clothing, hairstyles, body movements, gaze, lighting effects, distortion, and word play symbolize American dissonance. From Laurie Anderson's presence in challenging authority and playing with traditional gender roles in her works, to the Black female feminism and social activism of Beyonc矇, Rhiannon Giddens, and Janelle Mon獺e, to hip hop as resistance in the age of Trump, to sonic and visual variety in the musical Hamilton, the subjects are as powerful as they are topical. Rios explores the ways in which artists relate to and represent underrepresented groups, especially groups that are not traditionally perceived as having a majority voice. The encoded resistances recur across performances and video recordings so that they begin to become recognizable as repeated acts of resistance directed at injustices based on a number of categories, including race, gender, class, religion, and politics.

SOLID. Life and Death of a Jazz Genius. SCOTT LAFARO
It is the first hours of Thursday, July 6, 1961 and a young man lies dead on a road near Geneva, 300 miles from New York, his body burnt beyond recognition on a hot summer night. A star of the American jazz scene has been extinguished. In a few moments, at just 25 years of age, the life of Scott LaFaro, one of the most innovative bassists in the history of jazz, is over. Solid. Life and death of a jazz genius/Scott LaFaro is neither a biography nor a musicological essay, it is a study, a portrait. The story is mostly concentrated on the examination of some events that explain the originality and complexity of this musician and the period beginning from 1955, the year in which he leaves the University of Ithaca and starts his first tour as a professional musician, until the moment of the tragic accident in which he lost his life. Short comments from reviews of the Italian version Solid. Quel diavolo di Scott LaFaro: Absolutely among the best books on music of this year!. Professor Guido Michelone, Milan La Cattolica University, Italy; Staiano shows how even a short life can be rich in stimuli Professor Claudio Sessa, Trieste Conservatory, Italy; ...an accurate account of a real innovator, with new insights on the connections between jazz and literature and on the Californian avant-garde scene. Professor Luca Cerchiari, Milan IULM University, Italy; ... a documented portrait of an artist as a young man able to highlight the formative aspects, the passions, the encounters with the great artists. Professor Franco Bergoglio, Turin University, Italy; ...an uncommon narrative agility makes for smooth reading, although it is still an open story, of which the ending is known.... Critic Francesco Cataldo Verrina; Staiano's book.... flows well and those who know about jazz will read it with pleasure. Double bass player Giovanni Tommaso. Short comment from a review of the English version: Staiano's book is a jewel in the history of jazz. The author takes the reader by the hand and immerses us in the New York and Los Angeles jazz scene of the late 1950s... Studies in Maltese Popular Music
This book examines the diverse facets of popular music in Malta, paying special attention to għana (Malta's folk song), the wind band tradition, and modern popular music. Ciantar provides intriguing discussions and examples of how popular music on this small Mediterranean island country interacts with other aspects of the island's life and culture such as language, religion, history, customs, and politics. Through a series of ethnographic vignettes, the book explores the music as it takes place in bars, at festivals, and during village celebrations, and considers how it is talked about in the local press, at group gatherings, and on social media. The ethnography adopted here is that of a native musician and ethnomusicologist and therefore marries the author's memories with ongoing observations and their evaluation.
Reading Smile
First conceived in 1966 but only completed in 2004, Brian Wilson Presents Smile has been called "the best-known unreleased album in pop music history" and "an American Sergeant Pepper." Reading Smile offers a close analysis of the recording in its social, cultural and historical contexts. It focuses in particular on the finished work's subject matter as embodied in Van Dyke Parks' contentious yet little understood lyrics, with their low-resolution, highly allusive portrayals of western expansion's archetypes, from Plymouth Rock, Massachusetts to Diamond Head, Hawaii. Documenting their multiple references and connotations, it argues that their invocations of national self-definition are part of a carefully crafted vision of American identity, society and culture both in tune and at odds with the times. Critical of the republic's past practices but convinced that its ideals, values and myths still provided resources to redeem it, the recording is interpreted as a creative musical milestone, an enduring product of its volatile, radical, countercultural times, and an American pop art classic. Of particular relevance to American Studies and popular culture scholars, Reading Smile will also appeal to those interested in 1960s popular music, not least to fans of Brian Wilson, Van Dyke Parks and the Beach Boys.
Mahler’s Nietzsche
Examines how Nietzschean ideas influenced the composition of Mahler's first four, so-called Wunderhorn, symphonies. Gustav Mahler and Friedrich Nietzsche both exercised a tremendous influence over the twentieth century. All the more fascinating, then, is Mahler's intellectual engagement with the writings of Nietzsche. Given the limited and frequently cryptic nature of the composer's own comments on Nietzsche, Mahler's specific understanding of the elusive thinker is achieved through the examination of Nietzsche's reception amongst the people who introduced composer to philosopher: members of the Pernerstorfer Circle at the University of Vienna. Mahler's Nietzsche draws on a variety of primary sources to answer two key questions. The first is hermeneutic: what do Mahler's allusions to Nietzsche mean? The second is creative: how can Mahler's own characterization of Nietzsche as an "epoch-making influence" be identified in his compositional techniques? By answering these two questions, the book paints a more accurate picture of the intersections of the arts, philosophy and politics in fin-de-si癡cle Vienna. Mahler's Nietzsche will be required reading for scholars and students of nineteenth and early twentieth century German music and philosophy.
Bach Studies
This volume draws together a collection of Robin A. Leaver's essays on Bach's sacred music, exploring the religious aspects of this repertoire through consideration of three core themes: liturgy, hymnology, and theology. Rooted in a rich understanding of the historical sources, the book illuminates the varied ways in which Bach's sacred music was informed and shaped by the religious, ritual, and intellectual contexts of his time, placing these works in the wider history of Protestant church music during the Baroque era. Including research from across a span of forty years, the chapters in this volume have been significantly revised and expanded for this publication, with several pieces appearing in English for the first time. Together, they offer an essential compendium of the work of a leading scholar of theological Bach studies.

?dith Piaf’s R矇cital 1961
From the beginning of her career in 1935 to her death in 1963 and right up to the present, ?dith Piaf has been recognized as unique and iconic. She is France's most celebrated and mythified singing star across the world. R矇cital 1961 explores her most important album: the live recording of her comeback concert at the Paris Olympia on 29 December 1960, which unveiled her keynote song, 'Non je ne regrette rien' (No Regrets). It examines the content, context and significance of the concert in relation to Piaf's career, her life and her celebrity. What was so special about the performance and why did the ecstatic audiences, that night and at the subsequent performances in 1961, find it so powerful and moving? The book dissects the live show, the album and the songs that feature on it, and at a deeper level their place in the invention of the public Piaf we know today - asking why, more than a century after her birth and 60 years after her death, we still remember her, listen to her and commemorate her around the world.
David Bowie and the Moving Image
The central image of David Bowie's "Life on Mars?" could have been ripped from his own experience: a child sits "hooked to the silver screen," reliving fantastical scenes played out on film. Throughout his life, Bowie was similarly transfixed by the power of film. From his first film role in The Image to his final music video before his death, "Lazarus," Bowie's musical output has long been intrinsically linked to images. Analyzing Bowie's music videos, planned film projects, acting roles, and depictions in film, David Bowie and the Moving Image provides a comprehensive view of Bowie's work with film and informs our understanding of all areas of his work, from music to fashion to visual art. It enters the debate about Bowie's artistic legacy by addressing Bowie as musician, actor, and auteur.
1960s Pop Star Colouring Book
45 fab images for you to colour, plus articles on every single act, by Kev F Sutherland, of Beano and Marvel comics fame. Paperback edition. Who is in this definitive volume of pop stars to colour, from the decade of psychedelia? There's... Adam Faith, The Beach Boys, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Shirley Bassey, Cliff Richard, The Supremes, Herman's Hermits, Lulu, Freddie & The Dreamers, Cilla Black, Roy Orbison, Smokey Robinson, Millie Small, The Four Seasons, James Brown, Phil Spector, Marvin Gaye, The Who, The Kinks, The Hollies, Dusty Springfield, Sandy Shaw, Aretha Franklin, Tom Jones, Bob Dylan, Johnny Cash, Dionne Warwick, The Monkees, The Rutles, The Mamas & The Papas, Simon & Garfunkel, Sonny & Cher, Pink Floyd, Nina Simone, Jimi Hendrix, Crazy World Of Arthur Brown, Ike & Tina Turner, Velvet Underground, Frank Zappa, Elvis Presley, The Doors, Janis Joplin, Captain Beefheart, and Joni Mitchell. Go on, who'd we miss? The 1960s. They say if you can remember it, you weren't there. Which, if the documentaries that have filled up BBC 4 and Sky Arts for the last couple of decades are anything to go by, suggests nobody was there in the sixties, cos they all seem to have a hell of a lot to say about it now. If there's ever been a decade whose music has been examined, observed, pored-over, analysed, celebrated, and played endlessly, it's the 1960s. It's a decade that appeared to start in black and white, then transform into full colour halfway through, almost like it was a Wizard Of Oz tribute decade. With the colour on film and, later, TV, came the explosion of everybody's home decorating set that was psychedelia. Some took the drugs that gave it its name (those would be the folks who went on to be unable to remember the decade) while plenty more consumed the colours on their album covers and their clothes. And one country punched well above its weight in the Swinging Sixties: Britain. Our painters and sculptors were in the forefront of Pop Art and Op Art; our designers like Mary Quant and Terence Conran revolutionized fashion; our film makers unleashed James Bond, Hammer Horror and Carry On movies on the world. But it was in one area that the Brits undeniably ruled supreme - the world of popular music. kevfcomicartist.com

Punk
Infused with a raw and energetic sound that stripped rock 'n' roll to the bone, punk rock transformed rock's landscape in the 1970s, deconstructing bloated arena rock and leaving a lasting influence on the music and cultural scene in the United States and overseas. Punk was all about extending a middle finger to the status quo while pushing boundaries in uncharted directions. According to punk poet laureate Patti Smith, "To me, punk rock is the freedom to create, freedom to be successful, freedom to be not successful, freedom to be who you are. It's freedom." Punk: The Definitive Guide to the Blank Generation and Beyond focuses on the origins of punk, ranging from disparate influences such as Dadaism, the Beat Generation, the garage bands of the 1960s, the Paris-based Situationist International movement, Jamaican ska bands, Stanley Kubrick's dystopian masterpiece A Clockwork Orange, and the glam rock of the early 1970s. Rich Weidman highlights the best and worst punk bands, the greatest punk songs and albums, the most notorious concerts, and the rise of American hardcore punk. Legendary venues such as CBGB and classic punk films and documentaries like The Decline of Western Civilization propelled the rise of pop punk bands into the mainstream and every other aspect of punk subculture, including its lasting impact on rock 'n' roll and society as a whole.

This is the first critical text in over a century of the surviving fragment of Arixtoxenus's Elementa Rhythmica. Pearson offers further evidence of Aristoxenian theory in extracts from later Greek musical writers and from the important papyrus fragment Oxyrhynchus Papyri 2687, which is also presented here with translation and commentary. Pearson demonstrates that Aristoxenus explains rhythm in terms that would be acceptable to musicians today, that he does not regard rhythm as "purely quantitative," and that rhythm as he understood it can be found in lyric poetry of the fifth century.

The Voice of Judith in 300 Years of Oratorio and Opera
This volume focuses on the story of Judith as presented by composers, librettists and playwrights over four centuries. Helen Leneman analyzes numerous examples of music, librettos and the librettists' views of Judith - strongly influenced by societal attitudes of their time - and how these works in turn suggest unexpected ways of understanding biblical women and their stories. Music adds nuances, colors and emotions, becoming a subtext that suggests character and emotions. Leneman presents in-depth analyses of the librettos and music of 16 operas and oratorios based on the book of Judith that span 300 years (1694-1984), in addition to two influential plays that inspired several librettos in the nineteenth century. Exploring works by such varied composers as Vivaldi, Mozart, Parry, Honegger, Serov, Chadwick and von Reznicek, Leneman reveals the ways in which each adaptation expands, distils or reinterprets Judith's character and story. In this first ever extensive study of musical settings of the Book of Judith, Leneman enables the biblical heroine to transcend her source.
