Modigliani
Amadeo Modigliani (1884-1920) was one of the many and diverse talents who were drawn to Paris in the early years of this century, making the city a vibrant but pressurized environment for artistic expression. A legend grew up around Modigliani, who, along with others, engendered the concept of the peintre maudit - the accursed painter - whose poverty, corruption and excess were the very seeds from which his remarkable works of art were conceived. Unlike the Italian Futurists, who stormed at their own overwhelming tradition, Modigliani seemed to sense the possibility of returning to it for renewal. His interpretation of a central theme of the tradition, the reclining female nude, produced a series of uniquely beautiful works, outstanding in the grace and harmony of their linear designs and the quality of their colour. Nude, portraits and studies of a surprising range of personalities and psychological types are represented in this ideal introduction to the artist, as is a selection of his remarkable stone carvings, of which about 25 survive.

Chronicling 10 years of the duo's collaborative practice and their influential artist-run performance and theater spaces in BerlinThis book, German Theater 2010-2022, is the first monograph on the work of the artist duo Calla Henkel and Max Pitegoff. Their manifold practices play out, live test and fictionalize the mechanisms that shape creative communities. Chronicling over a decade of production in Berlin, the book is organized around the influential bar and theater spaces they ran there: Times Bar (2011-12), New Theater (2013-15), Gr羹ner Salon at the Volksb羹hne (2017-18) and TV Bar (2019-22). Rooted in a renewed conceptual approach to photography, Henkel and Pitegoff's oeuvre spins an allegory of this historical moment in which precarity and gentrification are two sides of the same coin. Their photographs, plays, writings and films address the complexity of collective action, painting a deadpan picture of the social and economic systems that sustain communal exchanges and their eminently fragile autonomy.Calla Henkel (born 1988) is from Minneapolis and based in Berlin and Los Angeles. Chris Ofili: Joyful Sorrow

Cynthia Hawkins: Art Notes, Art
A scintillating record of Cynthia Hawkins' work and the Black gallery scene of 1970s and 1980s New YorkSince the 1970s, Cynthia Hawkins (born 1950) has investigated the potentials of abstract painting. Her process-oriented practice embraces the improvisational to create a space for her continually evolving vocabulary. From 1979 to 1981, Hawkins documented these developments in a journal. A record of routine and the everyday, the journal also gathers sketches, notes for new and in-progress works, and responses to contemporary art and criticism, bringing the artist's reflections into relief. Art Notes, Art also offers a picture of the burgeoning Black-owned gallery scene in New York that Hawkins was an important participant in--including Just Above Midtown, where she had her first solo exhibition in 1981--as well as the women artists' circle she was an active member of. Art Notes, Art is richly illustrated with works by the artist produced during this key period, photographs and ephemera, and a visual archive of contemporaneous work by her peers.

The movement encourages artists to create art every day during the whole month; a total of 31 drawings traditionally made in black and white line art. This book provides a behind-the-scenes view of the debut feature film, Exhibiting Forgiveness, by renowned artist and director, Titus Kaphar. The film follows Tarrell, a successful Black painter, who reunites with his estranged father, La'Ron. Having endured years of La'Ron's addiction and abuse as a child, the trauma of Tarrell's past reverberates throughout his life and art. Facing his newly sober father, Tarrell must reconcile himself with his childhood and determine how to move forward. With poignant performances by Andr矇 Holland, Andra Day, John Earl Jelks, and Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor, Exhibiting Forgiveness masterfully depicts the cycle of abuse and comments on the power dynamics of the contemporary art world. IRIS_FLUIDISM, works 2018-2024
CARMEN RIEGER (IRIS) was born in Romania and has been living in Austria for almost 21 years. A graduate of the Faculty of Industrial Design she has worked for many years as a furniture designer. Since 2018 she has experienced a whole new style inspired by the organic forms that fluids create in their movement. She called this new style "Fluidism". For IRIS, her style Fluidism is a tribute to the most fascinating, important and complex fluid on Earth, without which life cannot exist _ WATER. Water is witness to the interconnectedness and interdependence of all living things. For the artist, water is not only the flow of life, but also an expression of spirituality. It is a sacred gift of inestimable value that we must take care. For IRIS, water is an expression of love and interdependence of all life forms on the planet and in the Universe. Water unites all of creation into a whole of boundless beauty, diversity, and complexity. The water in our body reminds us of the beauty and the unique chance offered to be present in everyday life, to witness the magnificent spectacle of life. Her artworks are composed of intricately organized, organic forms inspired by the movement of fluids. In the bodies of humans, plants and animals, water is found in a proportion of 70% or even higher. Thus, in the summer of 2018, IRIS had the idea of drawing only the liquid part of the bodies without completely destroying their original shape and character. In a person's portrait, for example, their character and inner life can be recognized. An elephant is transformed into a new elephant through a complex ensemble of colors and organic shapes without losing the idea of ​​an elephant. A bird remains a bird without losing the idea of ​​flight. From the beginning, the artist chose to use the 7 colors of the rainbow and the shades obtained by combining them in all her works of art. She wants to bring beauty, hope and love to life through her art.

If art is what, in the words of John Sloan, makes life worth living, then we should do our best to create it, experience it, and sustain it. It is our great pleasure to present in these pages the first five years of visual art published in Chestnut Review. Art has been an important part of the magazine since its founding, and we are proud of the 77 visual artists who first agreed to have their work published, and here republished, by us. Their images enrich our pages, inspire our imaginations, and feed our emotions.As we considered how best to celebrate this body of work, however, we realized that simply presenting the art again was insufficient. So we asked a select group of 36 Chestnut staff and friends to each adopt an art piece and to write a response to it. Thus, every single one of these pieces have inspired unique acts of contemplation and creation. These writers, credited with each piece that they chose, took on this task with a contagious sense of excitement that made all the work to put the volume together worthwhile.Their responses represent a wide spectrum of genres and sub-genres, from art appreciation prose pieces to poetry, creative nonfiction to short fiction. Native Genius
This book explores the world of contemporary American Indian Art in the Southwest, a subject that has long been overlooked-until now. At the heart of the book is how these artists are trapped in a world over which they have little control. If they paint what the tourists expect them to paint, such as Indians on horseback hunting buffalo, then they're going to find gallery representation and sell work. Conversely, if they paint the subject of their choice (like Anglo artists do), they have a hard time finding a gallery and making sales. Intended as a touchstone for all those interested in Nathaniel Mary Quinn's work for years to come, this monograph, dedicated to the artist, encapsulates over ten years of paintings and works on paper, and provides multiple perspectives and insights into Quinn's career to date. Archival photographs of the artist and his studio, offer a peak into Quinn's working process and reference materials. With an introduction by Larry Gagosian, the book features new texts by Dawn Ades and Andrew Winer. An in-depth interview between the artist and Sarah Elizabeth Lewis examines Quinn's approach to his practice, his vision, and everything in-between. This monograph is the first comprehensive survey of Nathaniel Mary Quinn's work, featuring paintings made since 2013. Quinn's images combine bodily fragments derived from sources that include both personal images and those culled from the media. Working without preliminary sketches, he forms composite images of faces and figures that resemble collages but are in fact painted and drawn. Developed with oil paint, charcoal, gouache, oil stick, and pastel, these works address the hybridity of perception and identity. The book includes over 125 color plates of Quinn's paintings, as well as studio photographs that offer an insight into his process.
