A Hundred Suns
Three poems by Mayakovsky, O'Hara and Ken Kiff's close friend Martha Kapos shed light on the way Kiff, like Paul Klee before him, took a line for a walk, and then another line, and then yet another. Kapos' poem was inspired by A true account of Talking to the Sun at Fire Island by Frank O'Hara, which was written in jealous awe after reading Mayakovsky's An Extraordinary Adventure Which Befell Vladimir Mayakovsky in a Summer Cottage.The three poems, the three conversations between the three poets and the sun, look for the reason to get out of bed in the morning. Over a samovar of tea, the Sun tells Vladimir that it is his creative duty to shine as a poet. He berates O'Hara: 'Hey! I've been trying to wake you up for fifteen minutes. Don't be so rude, you are only the second poet I've ever chosen to speak to personally.' And as for Martha, he assures her: 'I'll not measure out any more distress than you'll need to write your poems.'Kiff uses paint as the poets use words. He pushes his bricks of colour together, forcing them to blur and rhyme. His exploitation of complementary colour is second to none. Yet as with poets, the technique and understanding of the language are but tools to reach another place. 'Fantasy, ' he said, 'is a way of thinking about reality.'Kiff made specific paintings in homage to poetry including the 1985 canvas, The Poet Vladimir Mayakovsky Invites the Sun to Tea, 1985-7, but more importantly he had similar aspirations in his art to poetry. He would agree with Gaston Bachelard's dictum that 'The poet does not describe, he exalts.' Kiff needs to depict 'A hundred suns in one sunset.' Kiff was an intellectual, with endless nagging doubts. He was always questioning, and his reasoning was byzantine, circuitous, forever probing, but when it came down to the paintings, he managed to conjure up those hundred and forty in one. Not that this stopped him doubting himself, which is why he embarked on the Sequence, as one painting is never enough.If one wants to engage with the full ambition of Ken Kiff one needs to take the path along the two hundred works in his Sequence, but this little book and exhibition is taking Bachelard's advice. Following Kiff's meandering but always needle-sharp thinking, can distract from the essential simplicity of individual works. Let's just enjoy the paintings, the poems and the hundred suns.

The most comprehensive illustrated monograph to date on major American artist Carole A. Feuerman, a pioneer of superrealism in sculpture. Carole Feuerman is best known for her figurative sculptures depicting swimmers and dancers. She is the only woman to sculpt in this style, creating lifelike works for both indoor and outdoor spaces. Frank Frazetta has reigned as the undisputed king of fantasy art for 50 years, his fame only growing in the years since his death. With his paintings now breaking auction records (Egyptian Queen sold for $ 5.4 million in 2019) he's long overdue for this ultimate monograph.Born to a Sicilian immigrant family in Brooklyn, 1928, Frazetta was a minor league athlete, petty criminal and serial seducer with movie star looks and phenomenal talent. He claimed to only make art when there was nothing better to do - he preferred playing baseball - yet began his professional career in comics at age 16. Strip work led him to the infamous EC Comics, then to oils for Tarzan and Conan pulp covers. Both characters were interpreted by many before him, but as he explained in the 1970s, "I'm very physical minded. In Brooklyn, I knew Conan, I knew guys just like him," and he used this first-hand knowledge of muscle and macho to redefine fantasy heroes as more massive, more menacing, more testosterone-fueled than anything seen before. As counterbalance he created a new breed of women, nude as censorship allowed, with pixie faces and multiparous bodies: thick thighed, heavy buttocked, breasts cantilevered out to there, yet still, with their soft bellies and hints of cellulite, believably real. Add in the action, the creatures, the twilit worlds of haunting shadow and Frazetta's art is addictive as potato chips.
Sophie Calle: The Sleepers
Calle's seminal 1979 series of people sleeping in her bed: now in EnglishIn one of Sophie Calle's first artistic experiments, she invited friends, acquaintances and strangers to sleep in her bed. Twenty-seven people agreed, among them a baker, a babysitter, an actor, a journalist, a seamstress, a trumpet player and three painters. Calle photographed them awake and asleep, secretly recording any private conversations once the door closed. She served each a meal, and, if they agreed, she subjected them to a questionnaire that probed their personal predilections, habits and dreams as well as their interpretations of the act of sleeping in her bed: a curiosity, a game, an artwork, or--as Calle intended it--a job. The result, comprising her first exhibition in 1979, was a grid of 198 photographs and short texts.Unlike the original installation, this artist's book version of The Sleepers contains not only all the photographs and captions but also her engrossing, novellalike narrative, untranslated until now. From the single, liminal mise-en-sc癡ne of her bedroom, Calle reports in text and photos, as if in real time, as sleepers arrive, talk, sleep, eat and leave. Their acute and sometimes startling, sometimes endearing particularities merge into something almost like an eight-day-long dream. what are you afraid of? is a sequence of de/reconstructed sonnets derived from the transcript of "interviews" between the software engineer Blake Lemoine and a colleague at Google with LaMDA (Language Model for Dialog Applications). Tasked by Google to investigate the ethics of AI, Lemoine believed that his interaction with the programme suggested it was sentient. After raising these concerns with the tech giant, he was fired and then made the transcript publicly available in June 2022, sparking global discussion about Artificial Intelligence. These sonnets are accompanied with digitally manipulated photos of the author's deconstructed computer, and pose questions regarding the nature of human consciousness and the ethical considerations of machine learning.

Derived from the words miscere and genus in Latin, mestizaje refers to a mixing of the races. Interaction: Fifty Years of Fred Sandback and Dia Art Foundation
Exploring the decades-long working relationship between Fred Sandback and Dia Art Foundation, which served as a venue for his "situational" sculptureIn 1968, sculptor Fred Sandback (1943-2003) mounted his first solo exhibition at Heiner Friedrich's Munich gallery, displaying works made from elastic cord or acrylic yarn that traced planes and volumes in space. Thus began a long-term relationship that extended to Dia Art Foundation, the institution cofounded by Friedrich in 1974. Until now, there has been little published on Sandback's extraordinary alliance with Dia. Essayists Julian M. Rose, Corinna Thierolf and Edward A. Vazquez, as well as conversation partners Matilde Guidelli-Guidi and Curtis Harvey, unearth and explore archival documents, sketches and photographs to reveal how the institution offered Sandback both space and time to meticulously hone his sculptural interventions in the architectural environments of Dia, including the Fred Sandback Museum in Winchendon, Massachusetts, and Dia Beacon, New York.

It is perhaps taking the thing too lightly in a country where constant battle between life and desert makes the invocation of supernatural forces very necessary, but New Mexico saints have very human traits, and the old santeros have made them real. --Gustave Baumann In 1927, Gustave Baumann, already celebrated for his colorful and innovative woodcuts, turned his attention to documenting the works of traditional New Mexican santeros (saint makers). One of the first early-twentieth-century artists to recognize that the carving of bultos and the painting of retablos represented a distinct art form that merited respect and preservation on its own terms, Baumann sought to express their essence through the medium he had mastered. In the late 1920s and early 1930s, he partnered with a young New Mexico poet, Peggy Pond Church, and seasoned author Mary Austin, in the hope of publishing a book on the subject. But that book--The Little Saints of New Mexico--was never published. In Printing the Spirit, Thomas Leech and Carmella Padilla draw from Baumann's original materials, now part of the Gustave Baumann Archive at the New Mexico History Museum, to honor Baumann's work. For the first time, Printing the Spirit brings together a selection of Baumann's faithful pencil renderings of thirty-four bultos and retablos and the proofs he made for the original book. Also included are color reproductions of some of the actual santos, now in museum collections, upon which he modeled his works; images of his original carved woodblocks; essays by Baumann and Austin; poetry by Church; and historic photographs.Baumann scholar and printer Leech provides an overview of Baumann's lifelong journey to publish the book. C矇zanne, Masters, and Me
During the beginning of the 20th century, the possible connection between Paul C矇zanne's art and Henri Bergson's philosophy was once a legend. However nowadays, few people mention this anymore. When our protagonist left his former career and returned to school in the 1990s, he fell into the world of art. While studying Western art theory, he was fascinated by the parallels between Bergson and the art he researched. Our main character followed the spiritual guidance of C矇zanne and his successors, Matisse and Picasso, and devoted himself to tracing the prospect of this century-old legend. Through many struggles and endless toil, he resolved the mystery in C矇zanne's various paintings (e.g., cardplayers, smokers, still-lifes, mountains, portraits, bathers, etc.). He rediscovered C矇zanne's paintings in detail and found that C矇zanne incorporated three Bergsonian figures (vertical and horizontal lines, cone, and shell) as the composition in two of his famous paintings. Moreover, C矇zanne skillfully embedded Bergson's initials, H.B., in these paintings. He has found the undeniable linkage. This book covers the many predecessors and masters over the past centuries whose collective efforts have led to wonderful artistic discovery. Despite feeling like a child onlooker, our protagonist was honored to participate.
The Visualization of a Nation

In a very different Presidential address, as Artur Mas spoke to the press about the 2014 independence referendum, T?pies's enormous painting Les quatre cr簷niques (1990) loomed in the background - an image that took on new meanings under very different sociopolitical circumstances.In this fascinating and thought-provoking investigation, Emily Jenkins explores both T?pies's extraordinary style and his journey through Catalonia's turbulent modern history. Despite his complex relationship with the Spanish state, and having shown bold acts of political protest through his art, T?pies has been f礙ted as one of Spain's most successful modern artists.
