Wallace Berman: Off the Grid
Over 45 works from the California art legend Wallace Berman, including selections from his rare short film AlephWallace Berman (1926-76) was a notorious guru of the 1960s art pantheon. Often cited as a West Coast Beat Generation artist who rubbed elbows with the likes of Allen Ginsberg, Dennis Hopper and the Rolling Stones, his contributions transcend the comparisons of his aesthetic and the associations that he kept. A self-taught artist, Berman was influenced by Surrealism, Dadaism and the Kabbalah, as well as jazz music and the mystical symbols and popular imagery of his time.Berman is best known for his signature motif, which comes from a reappropriated Sony advertisement picturing a hand holding a transistor radio, which he found in 1964. By removing the speaker grill and inserting random appropriated images, the hand shuffles up messages that appear to spring out of the ether. His early use of the gridding technique creates a visual cacophony that barrages the senses.Off the Grid follows the eponymous 2021 show at Totah, a rare East Coast exhibition of Berman's work, which included a screening of his rare short film Aleph (1956-66), followed by a discussion between Tosh Berman (Wallace Berman's son) and Andrew Lampert, moderated by poet Anne Waldman. Les Lalanne: Zoophites
A personal, playful tribute to the Lalannes featuring their signature animal-inspired works as well as some rare collaborative piecesIn 1964, Claude (1925-2019) and Fran癟ois-Xavier Lalanne (1927-2008) held their first joint solo exhibition, titled Zoophites: an obsolete French term for invertebrate animals that resemble plants. This would turn out to be a fitting title for their oeuvre, chiefly composed of whimsical renditions of sheep, monkeys, rabbits, birds and more. To celebrate the 60th anniversary of this show, Kasmin presents a revitalized exhibition of the Lalannes' work under the same title. The zoomorphic tables, chairs, sculptures and more are all drawn entirely from the collection of the Lalannes' eldest daughter, Caroline Hamisky Lalanne. The catalog features over 100 color images in addition to archival photographs. Zoophites is also unique in that it documents some rare collaborative sculptures by the artist couple, who shared a home and studio but rarely worked together.

Georg Baselitz
Known for the audaciously simple but game-changing strategy of painting the motif on its head, Georg Baselitz has been a consistently challenging artist since the start of the 1960s. His work is always highly charged but surprisingly diverse, beginning with the raw, existential male figures famously removed from his first solo exhibition for indecency, and the series of "Heroes" that portrayed disabled and exposed figures in a destroyed landscape. During this development, the picture space became more and more fractured, and by the end of the decade the artist fully turned the world upside down: trees, factories, eagles, or nude self-portraits actually painted on their heads. This soon allowed him to freely paint and to engage with conceptual color schemes or off-beat themes, such as men eating oranges, Soviet propaganda paintings, or more recently so-called remixes in a reengagement with his own earlier work as a dialogue in time. No one has painted urban Harrisburg as often as Fritz VonderHeiden (b. 1934). His style, developed over many decades, calls to mind Edward Hopper, but in a reductionist, minimalist way. His best urban works feel sterile and monolithic, emphasizing the geometry of oad, architecture and the natural world in a compelling composition of curves, color, and structure. They exemplify the energy of the 20th Century, harkening back with Art Deco elements. Fritz did not always paint this way. His earlier works - and some of his award-winning paintings - are more detailed, calling to mind Winslow Homer and John SInger Sargent. Yakasha-e: "Actor pictures from the floating world." Ukiyo, the floating world - a transient realm of pleasures, horrors, and dreams - was brought to life most vividly on the kabuki stage of 19th century Japan, and recorded in yakasha-e, paintings and woodblock prints depicting and most famous actors and most sensational scenes of the day. Perhaps the most famous of all purveyors of yakasha-e was Toyohara Kunichika (1835-1900), renowned as one of the greatest ukiyo-e artists of the 19th century. Almost his entire artistic life was dedicated to creating image records of kabuki theatre productions and the actors who starred in them, including such notables as Ichikawa Danjuro IX, Nakamura Shikan IV, and Onoe Kikugoro V.
