Carmen Cicero: Drawings and Watercolors
Carmen Cicero (b. 1926) is now in the midst of his seventh decade at the cutting edge of contemporary art. His early Abstract Expressionist works of the 1950s, collected by the Museum of Modern Art, the Guggenheim, the Whitney, and other major museums, later evolved into clearly defined, dreamlike images indebted to Surrealist automatism. In the 1960s, Cicero was one of the first members of the American avant-garde to return to figuration, pursuing, through the 1970s and '80s, a figurative expressionist style. This developed into his more recent "visionary" mode, in which he depicts, with a startling clarity, mysterious scenes animated by multiple contradictory feelings--unfulfilled desires, jealousy, despair, and isolation--as well as a generous dose of humor. Throughout his entire artistic evolution, drawing has remained central to Cicero's practice, allowing him to depict the products of his fertile imagination with a vivid immediacy--a tendency that has continued with his watercolors, which he focused on seriously beginning in 1980. This oversize volume presents a generous selection of drawings and watercolors from every stage of Cicero's career. The drawings are printed on an uncoated stock that recalls the artist's favored Arches watercolor paper; many appear at close to their actual size. The way things are
Paul Klee spoke of, 'taking a line for a walk' when drawing. In my case it is the drawings that have led whilst I followed to see where they were going; and so one drawing suggested, and led to, another until a story, and for me meaning, emerged. The 'poems' were written independently of the drawings when I was a long way from home, wherever that is. The drawings are made primarily in ink and in my other life I'm an Applied artist working in metal, most often as a silversmith, but at one time or another a jeweller and also in foundries.The title came from reading about Steinbeck's search for a title for, 'of mice and men', which in turn came from Robert Burns', 'Wee timorous beasties.' Another rejected title of his was, 'Something happened, ' and these, and the story, struck a chord with me when reading it whilst putting the drawings together for the book.
Hokusai's Fuji
Katsushika Hokusai's Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji and the three volumes of his subsequent One Hundred Views of Mount Fuji show his fascination with a single motif: Mount Fuji. Hokusai's near-obsession with Fuji was part of his hankering after artistic immortality. In Buddhist and Daoist tradition, this mountain was thought to hold the secret to eternal life, as one popular interpretation of its name suggests: fu-shi ("not death"). Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji was produced from 1830 to 1832, when Hokusai was in his seventies and at the height of his career. Among the prints are three of the artist's most famous: The Great Wave of Kanagawa; Fine Wind, Clear Morning; and Thunderstorm Beneath the Summit. By the time he created his second great tribute to Mount Fuji, three volumes comprising One Hundred Views of Mount Fuji, he was using the artist names "Gakyo Rojin" ("old man crazy for painting") and "Manji" ("ten thousand things" or "everything"). Contrasting the mountain's steadfastness and solidity with the changing world around it, Hokusai depicts Fuji through different seasons, weather conditions, and settings, and in so doing communicates an important message: while life changes, Fuji stands still.Including all illustrations from these two masterful series, Hokusai's Fuji also features many of Hokusai's earlier renditions of the mountain, as well as later paintings. In this way, through Mount Fuji, this volume traces a history of Hokusai's oeuvre.

Robert Ryman
This first book-length study of Robert Ryman argues that his work is a continuous experiment in the possibilities of painting. In this first book-length study of Robert Ryman, Suzanne Hudson traces the artist's production from his first paintings in the early 1950s, many of which have never been exhibited or reproduced, to his recent gallery shows. Ryman's largely white-on-white paintings represent his careful working over of painting's conventions at their most radically reduced. Through close readings of the work, Hudson casts Ryman as a painter for whom painting was conducted as a continuous personal investigation. Ryman's method--an act of "learning by doing"--as well as his conception of painting as "used paint" sets him apart from second-generation abstract expressionists, minimalists, or conceptualists. Ryman (born in 1930) is a self-taught artist who began to paint in earnest while working as a guard at the Museum of Modern Art in New York in the 1950s. Hudson argues that Ryman's approach to painting developed from quotidian contact with the story of modern painting as assembled by MoMA director and curator Alfred Barr and rendered widely accessible by director of the education department Victor D'Amico and colleagues. Ryman's introduction to artistic practice within the (white) walls of MoMA, Hudson contends, was shaped by an institutional ethos of experiential learning. (Others who worked at the MoMA during these years include Lucy Lippard, who married Ryman in 1961; Dan Flavin, another guard; and Sol LeWitt, a desk assistant.) Hudson's chapters--"Primer," "Paint," "Support," "Edge," and "Wall," named after the most basic elements of the artist's work--eloquently explore Ryman's ongoing experiment in what makes a painting a painting. Ryman's work, she writes, tests the medium's material and conceptual possibilities. Francis Alÿs. the Nature of the Game
In 1999, a short video of a solitary boy kicking an empty bottle up a hill in Mexico City became the first instalment of Children's Games, a series of works by artist Francis Alÿs (b. Antwerp, 1959). The ongoing project, which now numbers around thirty-five works, has gradually given shape to an extensive collection of videos of children at play. For almost twenty-five years, Alÿs and his collaborators F矇lix Blume, Julien Devaux, and Rafael Ortega have been travelling around the world to document the distinctive ways in which children interact with each other and their physical environment. They have gone from remote villages in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Afghanistan, Venezuela, and Nepal to the mountains of Switzerland and metropoles like Hong Kong and Paris, but have also visited the war-torn city of Mosul in Iraq, the border between Mexico and the United States, and the strait of Gibraltar that divides Africa and Europe. The resulting images are standing proof of the seriousness of play and of children's stunning powers of resilience in the face of conflict. This volume provides a multidisciplinary perspective to the many layers of Children's Games. Michael Richards: Are You Down?
The first monograph dedicated to the legacy of an under-recognized artist who passed on September 11, 2001American artist Michael Richards (1963-2001) was born in Brooklyn and raised in Kingston, Jamaica. Integral to a generation of Black artists emerging in the 1990s, Richards' work gestures toward reprieve from social injustices, often in the context of the historic and ongoing oppression of Black people. Richards' exploration of freedom and escape centered on themes of flight and aviation, with which he engaged through the legacy of the Tuskegee Airmen, Greek mythology, Christianity and African and African American folklore. His nascent career was cut short when he passed away on September 11, 2001, while working in his Lower Manhattan Cultural Council studio in the World Trade Center.This monograph, published on the occasion of the major touring retrospective exhibition Are You Down?, centers his life and work by attending to the historical and contemporary significance of his practice. Born and bred New Yorker Jill Gill is equal parts artist and author, commentator and collector, a true inamorata of the ever-changing city. Since the mid-1950s, she has captured the buildings and streetscapes of the city (especially those about to be lost to urban renewal) in a series of more than 100 watercolor and ink paintings. The New York she portrays is one of classic movies, vintage postcards, and hand-painted wall advertisements. The scenes in Site Lines: Lost New York, 1954-2022 extend from Midtown South, home of the artist from the mid-1940s to the mid-1960s, to the Upper East Side, where she and her family lived in a historic Rhinelander townhouse. Along the way she passes through Midtown, including storied Fifth Avenue and the Theater District, and the Upper West Side. Her work includes buildings both important and unimportant that would otherwise have been lost to memory: the glorious Helen Hayes Theater, the Art Deco Horn & Hardart Automat on 57th Street, and blocks upon blocks of ordinary yet distinctive retail and commercial structures. In addition, Gill includes buildings that have themselves been quietly observing the changing city, often changing along with it: St. Bart's, the Villard Houses, and MoMA before it "ate" 53rd Street. Each scene is accompanied by text that blends in-depth research with first-hand observation.

The 19th century in France witnessed the emergence of the structures of the modern art market that remain until this day. This book examines the relationship between the avant-garde Barbizon landscape painter, Th矇odore Rousseau (1812-1867), and this market, exploring the constellation of patrons, art dealers and critics who surrounded the artist. It argues for the pioneering role of Rousseau, his patrons and his public in the origins of the modern art market, and, in so doing, shifts attention away from the more traditional focus on the novel careers of the Impressionists and their supporters. Drawing on extensive archival research, the book provides new insight into the role of the modern artist as professional.
