Taylor's portraits and allegorical tableaux--populated by friends, family members, strangers on the street, athletic stars and entertainers--display flashes of familiarity in their seemingly brash compositions, which nonetheless linger in the imagination with uncanny detail. In his paintings on cigarette packs, cereal boxes and other found supports, Taylor brings his primary medium into the realm of common culture. Similarly, the artist's installations often recode the forms and symbolisms of found materials (bleach bottles, push brooms) to play upon art historical tropes and modernism's appropriations of African or African American culture. Taken together, the various strands of Taylor's practice display a deep observation of Black life in America at the turn of the century, while also inviting a humanist fellowship that pushes outward from the particular.Raised in Oxnard, California, Henry Taylor (born 1958) took art classes at Oxnard College in the 1980s and studied under James Jarvaise, who became a mentor. From 1984 through 1995 Henry Taylor worked as a psychiatric technician at Camarillo State Mental Hospital (a facility that is now California State University Channel Islands) while concurrently attending the California Institute of the Arts (CalArts) in Valencia, where he obtained his Bachelor of Fine Art degree in 1995. Taylor has had institutional solo exhibitions at MoMA PS1 and the Studio Museum in Harlem. He lives and works in Los Angeles.
Shaolin Days and DeKalb Nights
Victor Gastelum, known for the artwork he did for numerous Calexico releases, branches out with his first collection of abstract images. Robert Vodicka, former label manager at New Alliance Records, wrote the text. Gastelum and Vodicka used chance procedures to match the specific images to the text. With a masterful career spanning decades, Williams has been a part of one of the most influential art movements of the past 60 years. Jack Whitten: Cosmic Soul

Throughout the volume, art historian Richard Shiff provides critical interpretations of Whitten's painting, sculpture and artistic philosophy.Jack Whitten (1939-2018) was born in Bessemer, Alabama, and was raised in the Jim Crow South. He studied art at Southern University in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, where he was heavily involved in civil rights demonstrations. After moving to New York in 1960, he studied art at Cooper Union and quickly fell in love with, and was deeply influenced by, the Abstract Expressionist painters. Whitten had a solo exhibition at the Whitney in 1974 and a 10-year retrospective at the Studio Museum in Harlem in 1983. In 2014, a retrospective exhibition was organized by the Museum of Contemporary Art in San Diego, traveling to the Wexner Center for the Arts in 2015 and the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis in 2015 and 2016. Whitten lived in Queens, New York, where he died in 2018.

Glady's Peto's Angela
Throughout the early 1920s, each week, in a sequence of panels accompanying the high-society gossip column of "Mariegold," readers of "The Sketch: A Journal of Art and Actuality" got to follow the adventures of an irrepressible Bright Young Thing named Angela.This volume is a collection of Angela's adventures as depicted in the pages of "The Sketch," which was a high-end society magazine published in London, in 1923 and 1924.They are relics of another time. There never was a time in the English-speaking world quite like the early 1920s, especially for women.Just a dozen or two years before, the average woman had been all but enchained - relegated to decorative and reproductive roles in the home.But now, with the Great War over, suddenly women everywhere were on what had to feel like a roller-coaster ride to freedom. Clothing styles had changed to looser things that allowed freedom of movement. Society's attitudes, especially among the young, had shifted in a relative blink of an eye. Women were claiming freedoms that they'd never before had, but which were clearly theirs by right. The old mid-Victorians were apoplectic, and thundered their denunciations from porch and pulpit; the New Woman took pride in their scorn.Today we know how it all ended - not with a bang, but with a whimper, with a flurry of advertisements for cigarettes and other consumer products marketing themselves as the vehicles of emancipation... followed by the Great Depression. But for a woman in 1923 or 1924, it must have felt like riding a tiger. Day after day, more of the old barriers were falling. Women were driving cars, smoking cigarettes, flirting with young men, starting businesses, running for public office, creating art. Where might it all end? What was there in the human experience that wasn't possible for them to achieve? What new adventures lay in store in the years to come?It's this hopeful, free-and-daily-getting-freer spirit that is so perfectly embodied by Gladys Peto's Angela and her friends. One gets the sense that a sex life, or even any kind of serious relationship at all, would slow her down too much.Angela is the distilled essence of the spirit of the New Woman circa 1923. She is an ambassador from another time, a hopeful, innocent time of increasing freedom, unconstrained by the knowledge that the good times wouldn't last long and that real obstacles to women's continued personal growth lay undiscovered just a few years down the road.And thanks to Gladys Peto's incomparable wit and pen, we can experience some of that exuberance firsthand, for ourselves.
Piet Mondrian: Mondrian Evolution
Celebrating Mondrian's journey from Dutch landscape painter to pioneer of lively, hard-edged abstractionPublished on the occasion of the Dutch artist's 150th birthday, Mondrian Evolution celebrates the multifaceted work and artistic development of Piet Mondrian. Taking the movement as a point of departure, Mondrian developed Neo-Plasticism, a nonrepresentational "pure plastic art," which he believed to be the pathway to universal beauty.
