In this volume, Emily A. Fenichel offers an in-depth investigation of the religious motivations behind Michelangelo's sculpture and graphic works in his late period. Taking the criticism of the Last Judgment as its point of departure, she argues that much of Michelangelo's late oeuvre was engaged in solving the religious and artistic problems presented by the Counter-Reformation. Buffeted by critiques of the Last Judgment, which claimed that he valued art over religion, Michelangelo searched for new religious iconographies and techniques both publicly and privately. The City as Subject
In The City as Subject, Carolyn S. Loeb examines distinctive bodies of public art in Berlin: legal and illegal murals painted in West Berlin in the 1970s and 1980s, post-reunification public sculptures, and images and sites from the street art scene. Her careful analyses show how these developed new architectural and spatial vocabularies that drew on the city's infrastructure and daily urban experience. These works challenged mainstream urban development practices and engaged with citizen activism and with a wider civic discourse about what a city can be. Loeb extends this urban focus to her examination of the extensive outdoor installation of the Berlin Wall Memorial and its mandate to represent the history of the city's division. David Salle: Tree of Life
Salle's new allegorical painting cycle identifies the tree as an image of collective experiencePictures Generation painter, printmaker, photographer and stage designer David Salle (born 1952) began painting his Tree of Life series in 2019. These compositions are structured around brightly colored trees that simultaneously conceal and compose the scene unfolding behind them. Acting as a spine or an anchor, they appear to condition the interactions of the characters on either side, held in place as they are by the branching structure. The characters are borrowed from Peter Arno's midcentury illustrations for the New Yorker. The motif of the tree reverberates throughout the history of art, and Salle identifies the tree as a form of collective experience, a lineage of which we are all a part. This concise volume showcases these new paintings, the culmination of the celebrated Tree of Life series.
Adrian Ghenie: The Fear of Now
New oil paintings and charcoal drawings fusing autobiographical reverie and histories of traumaRomanian-born, Berlin-based painter Adrian Ghenie (born 1977) merges art historical and contemporary cultural references--the art of Otto Dix and Philip Guston fused with the hybrid, monstrous aliens in the animated series Rick and Morty, for example. Curtis Cuffie
The first book on the art-world legend who installed his ephemeral sculptures on the streets of New York's East VillageCurtis Cuffie (1955-2002) was an artist from Harstville, South Carolina, who found local notoriety in the 1990s for the thrilling and surprising way he adorned the streets of New York's East Village. His on-the-spot sculptures were woven into fences, hung from walls and sprawled along the Bowery and Cooper Square.Making use of whatever he could find to fashion works that were imaginative and real, Cuffie took the street for all it could provide: materials, an audience, a rhythm and a sense of the strange unexpectedness of public life. He was unhoused for stretches of his life, and his sculptures were viewed near to his outdoor quarters. Cuffie's art was often removed by city sanitation, but new work would spring up soon after. Though little of his art survives today, a trove of photographs documenting it keeps him in the present.This publication, the first on Cuffie, seeks to honor the artist and rectify his omission by going backward to recover that which has been left behind. It places Cuffie's own photographs and those of his companion Katy Abel alongside pictures that photographers Margaret Morton and Tom Warren took of Cuffie and his art on the streets.

Since 2001, Larsen has sought alternative and salvaged materials in his abstract constructions with the "hope of bringing purist shapes and surfaces back down to earth." This quest takes Larsen to sites such as the metal scrapyard, where he mines the raw material for his work by sawing off sections of older-model vehicles. The works' surfaces, which hold a strongly patinated palette, are unmodified; the colors of the metal that skin the objects--the rusty off-white of an old pickup truck or the vibrant yellow of a decommissioned school bus--are exactly as he found them. Calling to mind both architecture and the reductive forms associated with Minimalism, Larsen's works upend and defy classification.
