Ashmolean Now 4: Daphne Wright
The fourth installment of the Ashmolean Now series focuses on sculptures by Irish artist Daphne Wright. Conceived with the Hugh Lane Gallery, Dublin, the exhibition features several new works in plaster which consider the tradition of still lifes and respond to the sculptures in the Ashmolean's Cast Gallery collection. Artist Daphne Wright is fascinated with the collections of the Ashmolean Museum and the history of seeing they present. Her latest project grows out of a lifetime's engagement with this theme. Much of Wright's existing body of work is steeped in a deep understanding of the iconography and history of Western art, as represented in the Ashmolean's extensive collection. This book establishes connections to the Ashmolean's rich collection of 17th century Dutch Still Life paintings. These genre paintings portray a range of subjects from arrangements of flowers to fruit, fish and game. Sometimes the paintings include a symbolic reference to the transience of life, in the form of fruit that has begun to rot or flowers that are losing petals. In Fridge Still Life, the exposed body of a fridge, containing upon its shelves a raw chicken and bundle of asparagus, is topped with a vase of wilting tulips. This is a contemporary re-telling of a still life painting, with its various familiar elements, such as a brace of hanging pheasants, a bowl of fruit and a vase of blooms, with can connote status or vanitas. Wright has explored the transitory nature of life throughout her practice. In previous work, Wright has used plants and animals, with their shorter life spans, to stand in for the human. Wright's work also resonates strongly with the Ashmolean's extensive and celebrated cast collection. Prominent amongst the plaster casts of Greek and Roman sculptures are the gods and heroes of Homeric legend. These idealized images of men still form the basis of our ideas of masculinity today. With Sons on Couch Wright is seeking to capture the elusive moment of transition into manhood. The athletic figures in the cast court may have been updated to social media influencers, but the pressure young men face today to achieve a perceived ideal body type remain the same.

Robert Rauschenberg: Roci
The only in-print book exploring Rauschenberg's years-long, self-funded initiative to promote cultural and artistic exchange across the globeThe Rauschenberg Overseas Culture Interchange, or ROCI (pronounced "Rocky," the name of the artist's pet turtle), was a tangible expression of Robert Rauschenberg's (1925-2008) long-term commitment to human rights and to the freedom of artistic expression. Funded almost entirely by the artist himself, Rauschenberg traveled to countries around the world often where artistic experimentation had been suppressed with the purpose of sparking a dialogue and achieving a mutual understanding through the creative process. Between 1985 and 1990, the project was realized in 10 countries in the following order: Mexico, Chile, Venezuela, China, Tibet, Japan, Cuba, the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR), Germany and Malaysia, with a final exhibition held in 1991 at the National Gallery of Art, Washington, DC.This catalog is the only in-print publication on Rauschenberg's ROCI initiative, making it an invaluable text for understanding this important and long-running project.

Helen Marden
The first-ever monograph on painter Helen Marden, covering over forty years of her work. This is the first ever monograph to present the full oeuvre of the painter Helen Marden. Isamu Noguchi

At Casa Kahlo--surrounded by her artistic family and the vibrant Indigenous culture she immersed herself in--she spent time with her closest confidantes (her sisters), her friends, and her lovers. The house also served as an additional studio space for Kahlo where she taught art classes to a legion of loyal students who referred to themselves as Los Fridos. Remarkably, Casa Kahlo has been occupied by Frida's family since they bought the house in 1930. Meticulously documenting the interiors, this book features a rich array of personal items and never-before-published letters and postcards to her sisters, her mother, and her most beloved niece Isolda. Hundreds of personal items offer an intimate view into her artistic environment and personal life: from her early drawings and paintings (including the first painting she showed Rivera at eighteen years old) to later drawings; her distinctive jewelry and clothing; key documents, including her birth and marriage certificates; artworks; and keepsakes ranging from dolls to her taxidermy butterfly collection. Written by her closest family members, the book presents a very fresh and deeply personal perspective on the artist's life, enriched by their unique connection to her legacy.

Brixy
Energy, optimism, the joy of life: Dietmar Brixy creates works that burst into the world with luminous color and dynamism. Kim Chong Hak: Painter of Seoraksan
Flouting the postmodern trends of 1960s South Korea, Kim's Mount Seorak landscapes mark a poignant return to figurationPublished with High Museum of Art. Since debuting his mature style in 1984, Kim Chong Hak (born 1937) has become one of the most widely recognized artists in South Korea. Known as the "Painter of Seoraksan," Kim has a relationship with Mount Seorak that is as essential to the history of Korean contemporary art as Cezanne's depictions of Mont Sainte-Victoire are in Western art history. Like many others in the postwar generation, Kim found himself grappling with questions of identity and persistent cultural memories within a deeply embedded colonial consciousness. Rejecting abstraction, he relocated to Gangwon Province, where his views of Seorak in the Taebaek Mountains encouraged the expressive figurative style for which he is known. Thus, Kim Chong Hak: Painter of Seoraksan is both the record of a generation's cultural reclamation and a reflection on the joys, sorrows, pain and fulfillment of coming into one's own language as an artist.
