The Place of the Mosque: Genealogies of Space, Knowledge, and Power extends Foucault's analysis, Of Other Spaces, and the "ideological conflicts which underlie the controversies of our day [and] take place between pious descendants of time and tenacious inhabitants of space." This book uses Foucault's framework to illuminate how mosques have been threatened in the past, from the Cord籀ba Mosque in the eighth century, to the development of Moorish aesthetics in the United States in the nineteenth century, to the clashes surrounding the building of mosques in the West in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. Akel Kahera uses Foucault's genealogy to elaborate on and study the subjects that are caught in the emergence of a battle--the social and political will to power, the networks of power, and the rituals of power--within the interstitial space. Sri Lanka
In 1975, I was in Sri Lanka on a photo assignment for The Tourist Board of Sri Lanka. Their 1976 calendar was on the agenda. I heard so many great things about Sri Lanka. I wasn't disappointed. They are a predominately Buddhist country. Buddhism was introduced by Venerable Mahinda, the son of the emperor Ashoka, during the reign of Sri Lanka's King Devanampiyatilla. According to legend, a tooth was taken from the Buddha as he lay on his funeral pyre. It was smuggled to Sri Lanka in 313 CE, hidden in the hair of Princess Hemamali, who fled the Hindu armies besieging her father's kingdom in India. The majority of the architectural ruins I photographed go back to this era. There are beautiful local Buddhist shrines scattered throughout the country. The ancient frescoes of Sigiria, a rock fortress built by King Kassapa in 477- 495 CE, are a must-see if you travel to Sri Lanka. The agricultural areas are fantastic; there are great photo opportunities everywhere -- from the terrace rice paddies to the tea plantation at Nuwara Eliya. There is an old hill club built by the British in the 19th century. It's kept much like it was then, complete with the old pool tables. One can only imagine what went on there! The Negombo's fish market and harbor were high on my photo list. I recently checked the internet and found only hotels and resorts. I imagine that most of these areas are gone now. Fruit and vegetable vendors were a staple of the villages; mini-malls and grocery stores didn't exist. The Tissamaharama game reserve, which is next to Yala National Park, was an experience I shall never forget. We were in a jeep at sunset and happened to cross a lone elephant. It was startled by our presence and charged our jeep. I used my camera's motor drive and took a lot of photos. The ground shook, and the photos were mostly blurry. I prayed that the game warden knew what he was doing; he did. The elephant stopped four feet from the front bumper. The photographs were taken over a 10-day period in 1975. Since then the environment & Pollution has taken it's toll on the historic sites. I am happy to have shared with you a look back in time. Douglas Olson

This book is the first scientific study to focus on awards in architecture and the built environment investigating their exponential growth since the 1980s. The celebration of excellence in architecture and related fields remains a phenomenon on which there is strangely little scientific scrutiny. What is to be understood from the plethora of award-winning projects, award-winning buildings and awarded professional practices in the built environment, year after year? Glossy images partake in an intense ballet at every local, regional, national or international award ceremony and they are meant to embody proofs of architectural excellence. However, it is necessary to take a critical distance to question what awards are meant to embody, symbolize, and perhaps measure. Each of the 10 chapters in this volume is centered on one question related to themes as varied as the comparison of Pritzker and Nobel Prizes, the Prix de Rome, the redefinition of quality through awards, green awards and sustainability, the multiplication of sustainable awards, heritage awards, architecture book awards, the awarding of school architecture, awards as mediations and awards as pedagogical devices. The Architect’s Engineer
Sir Nigel Thompson walked to school around the bomb craters of the London Blitz--it made him want to build things, rather than knock them down. After studying structural engineering in Africa, he worked on hospitals and theaters in London, and later headed the team that designed University of Qatar. He went on to design Embankment Place, a massive office complex built over London's Charing Cross railway station. Turning from building to rebuilding, he explored construction opportunities for British firms during the Gulf War, in Kuwait's still-burning oil fields. Following the 1999 bombing of Serbia and Kosovo, he led a reconstruction task force in Kosovo at the request of UK Prime Minister Tony Blair, for which he was knighted. Thompson's memoir details his long career in architectural design and construction, and in restorative development.

New Indian Architecture - 1947-2020
"NEW INDIAN ARCHITECTURE-1947-2020" is one of the few publications on Indian Architecture in the post-Independence era. It features 104 projects designed by 15 foreign and 66 Indian architects. These projects have been grouped into 11 categories i.e., Religious Buildings, Memorial Buildings, Cultural Buildings, Sports Buildings, Tourism and Recreational Buildings, Public Infrastructure, Agricultural Buildings, Residential Buildings, Educational Buildings, Healthcare Buildings, and Office Buildings.The projects featured in the book are located at 46 locations (ranging from a tiny village to a megacity) in 19 States and Union Territories of India. These are spread over a vast area of the subcontinent from Leh in the north to Madurai in the south (3600 km), and Kolkata in the east to Gandhinagar in the west (2000 km). The Living Death of Antiquity examines the idealization of an antiquity that exhibits, in the words of Johann Joachim Winckelmann, 'a noble simplicity and quiet grandeur'. Wanstead House
In c.1713, Sir Richard Child, heir to a mercantile fortune, commissioned Colen Campbell, to build Wanstead House, 'one of the noblest houses, not only in England, but in Europe'. Campbell's innovative classical fa癟ade was widely influential and sowed the seeds for English Palladianism. Its opulent interior by William Kent was equal to Kensington Palace and its extensive gardens were attributed to leading landscape designers George London and Humphry Repton. Wanstead's glory days came to an end in 1822, when a major sale of its contents was arranged to pay off financial debts. Two years later the house was demolished, its building fabric dispersed far and wide. A large crater on an east London golf course is all that remains of this once 'princely mansion'.
