By no means forgotten, there has been a new hit version of the song during nearly each decade since. The #17 pop single of 1945-49? "To Each His Own" by Eddy Howard. The song was written for the same-titled 1946 film, but was never used. No matter: the song became a number one hit, and the film -- without the song -- reaped an Academy Award for Best Actress for Olivia de Haviland. How about the #17 Country single of 1945-1949? "You Two-Timed Me One Time Too Often" by Tex Ritter, in classic Country lingo.. The #17 R&B single of 1940-1944? "Mr. Five-by-Five" by Freddie Slack & Ella Mae Morse. Ms Morse was, perhaps, the first white female singer with an R&B hit. The #17 album? "Lombardoland" (by Guy Lombardo, who was, by then, 20 years into his music career). The #17 Classical single is "The Whiffenpoof Song" by Robert Merrill & Russell Case. The traditional college song was introduced at Yale University in 1909. Yet, the Classical singles chart no longer exists. The #17 Classical composition is Leroy Anderson's "Sleigh Ride," which has since become one of the most recorded Christmas songs. The singles and albums at the higher & lower positions, for these genres and for Children's, Christmas, Classical (albums and compositions), and World music (Australia and the U.K.), are featured in the book. The compilations are based on scores calculated from the weekly music chart positions of the various recordings (or polls, in the case of Classical compositions). The single was one of several mid-1950s Pop hits by white acts which were originally successful on the R&B charts by black acts. The McGuires would go on to become the top female group of the second half of the'50s. The number 12 R&B single is "My Blue Heaven" by Fats Domino, one of 18(!) R&B hits that he had between 1955 and 1959. His recordings altered between new material and older songs, such as "My Blue Heaven." How about the number 12 country single? "I Walk the Line" by Johnny Cash, who wrote it as a love song to his first wife. How about the number 12 pop album? The soundtrack to "The King & I," starring Yul Brynner, with Marni Nixon's voice dubbed in for costar Deborah Kerr. The number 12 summertime single is "The Three Bells" by the Browns, a family trio. Jimmy Brown, whose lifetime is lyricized in the somber song, is fictional -- no relation to to the Browns. The number 12 easy listening single is the double-sided "You Send Me/ Summertime" by Sam Cooke, the most successful recording of his all-too-short career. George Gershwin's "Summertime" has been recorded more times than any other song in history. The number 12 jazz album is "Ella & Louis," the first of two collaborations between, arguably, the two most legendary jazz artists of all-time. The book features compilations of the top singles and albums in the music genres of Pop, R&B and Country, along with Children's, Christmas, Classical, Easy Listening, Jazz, and Film Soundtracks. There are numerous short biographies on top artists and composers, indexes to artists and titles, and an extensive bibliography. A Cradle for Ragtime
Bill Hill was the city editor of The Sedalia Democrat newspaper from 1960-1965. After Bill's death in 2014, his daughter JoAnn Hill Holcomb found the manuscript her father wrote for a book about Sedalia and Scott Joplin. She meticulously transcribed the manuscript and is publishing it as as written between 1960 and 1967. It is valuable for the interview accounts he described with the original surviving ragtime composers, G. Thomas "Tom" Ireland and Arthur Marshall. Bill's notes for the manuscript were lost but he does frequently cite his sources in the text of his book. "A Cradle for Ragtime" sheds light on the environment in which Joplin's classic ragtime compositions were written and on the remarkable nature of the composer's work.

The behind-the-scenes battle for the Rock Hall For 25 years, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame has defined Cleveland's image as the "Rock and Roll Capital of the World." But while the Rock Hall has become an iconic landmark for the city of Cleveland and for fans of rock and roll around the world, it was just one missed phone call away from never being built in Cleveland. If the prominent singer and actress Lesley Gore hadn't contacted radio personality Norm N. Nite in August 1983, the Hall of Fame would not be in Cleveland--period. The Musical Discourse of Servitude
Examining, for the first time, the compositions of Johann Joseph Fux in relation to his contemporaries Bach and Handel, The Musical Discourse of Servitude presents a new theory of the late baroque musical imagination. Author Harry White contrasts musical "servility" and "freedom" in his analysis, with Fux tied to the prevailing servitude of the day's musical imagination, particularly the hegemonic flowering of North Italian partimento method across Europe. In contrast, both Bach and Handel represented an autonomy of musical discourse, with Bach exhausting generic models in the mass and Handel inventing a new genre in the oratorio. A potent critique of Lydia Goehr's seminal The Imaginary Museum of Musical Works, The Musical Discourse of Servitude draws on Goehr's formulation of the "work-concept" as an imaginary construct which, according to Goehr, is an invention of nineteenth-century reception history. White locates this concept as a defining agent of automony in Bach's late works, and contextualized the "work-concept" itself by exploring rival concepts of political, religious, and musical authority which define the European musical imagination in the first half of the eighteenth century. Ask the Experts
From the end of the Second World War through the U.S. Bicentennial, the National Endowment for the Arts, the Rockefeller Foundation, and the Ford Foundation granted close to $300 million (approximately $2.3 billion in 2017 dollars) in the field of music alone. In deciding what to fund, these three grantmaking institutions decided to "ask the experts," adopting seemingly objective, scientific models of peer review and specialist evaluation. They recruited music composers at elite institutions, professors from prestigious universities, and leaders of performing arts organizations. Among the most influential expert-consultants were Leonard Bernstein, Aaron Copland, Lukas Foss, and Milton Babbitt. The significance was two-fold: not only were male, Western art composers put in charge of directing large and unprecedented channels of public and private funds, but in doing so they also determined and defined what was meant by artistic excellence. They decided the fate of their peers and shaped the direction of music-making in this country. By asking the experts, the grantmaking institutions produced a concentrated and interconnected field of artists and musicians. Officers and directors utilized ostensibly objective financial tools like matching grants and endowments in an attempt to diversify and stabilize applicants' sources of funding, as well as the number of applicants they funded. Such economics-based strategies, however, relied more on personal connections among the wealthy and elite, rather than local community citizens. Ultimately, this history demonstrates how "expertise" served as an exclusionary form of cultural and social capital that prevented racial minorities and non-dominant groups from fully participating.

Tallis
The composer Thomas Tallis (c. 1505 - November 1585) lived and worked through much of the turbulent Tudor period in England. Unlike many of his contemporaries, he did not just react to radical change: he thrived on it. He helped invent new musical styles to meet the demands of the English Reformation. He revived and reimagined older musical forms for a new era. Fewer than a hundred of his works have survived, but they are incredibly diverse, from miniature settings of psalms and hymns to a monumental forty-voice motet. In this new biography, author Kerry McCarthy traces Tallis's long career from his youthful appointment at Dover Priory to his years as a senior member of the Chapel Royal, revisiting the most important documents of his life and a wide variety of his musical works. The book also takes readers on a guided journey along the River Thames to the palaces, castles, and houses where Tallis made music for the four monarchs he served. It ends with reflections on Tallis's will, his epitaph (whose complete text McCarthy has recently rediscovered), and other postmortem remembrances that give us a glimpse of his significant place in the sixteenth-century musical world. Tallis will be treasured by performers, scholars, Tudor enthusiasts, and anyone interested in English Renaissance music.

Musik ist demnach schon immer ein essenzieller Bestandteil des Lebens vieler Menschen. Die Rezeption von Musik stand schon immer unter vielen verschiedenen Einfl羹ssen und daher fanden in diesem Feld gro?e Ver瓣nderungen durch die Geschichte hinweg statt. Diese Ver瓣nderungen haben wiederum Einfl羹sse auf die musikalischen Pr瓣ferenzen der H繹renden. Durch das digitale Zeitalter, in dem wir aktuell leben, haben sich Neuerungen des H繹rverhaltens ergeben. Musik ist nun von einer Omnipr瓣senz gepr瓣gt. Egal wo wir uns befinden erklingt Musik und f羹r die meisten Menschen ist, durch die Verbreitung des Smartphones, Musik 羹berall problemlos zug瓣nglich. Dieser Omnipr瓣senz von Musik muss im schulischen Musikunterricht Rechnung getragen werden. Durchaus auch im Sinne einer offen-kritischen Betrachtung. Es stellen sich also folgende Fragen: Wie hat sich der Zugang und die Haltung der H繹rerInnen zur Musik im digitalen Zeitalter ver瓣ndert? Welche Rolle spielen in diesem Zusammenhang Pr瓣ferenzen und H繹rertypen? In dieser Arbeit werden wir versuchen, diese Fragen anzugehen und gleichzeitig zu kl瓣ren, welche Chancen der Musikunterricht in der Sekundarstufe I bieten kann. Hierf羹r werden wir zun瓣chst das H繹rverhalten von Personen, mit Hilfe der Ans瓣tze von Herrmann Rauhe, erkl瓣ren. Im n瓣chsten Kapitel wird darauf eingegangen, wie sich musikalische Pr瓣ferenzen und die Erforschung dieser zusammensetzen. Rusalka
Famous as the libretto for Anton穩n Dvor獺k's opera of the same name, Jaroslav Kvapil's poem Rusalka is an intriguing work of literature on its own. Directly inspired by Hans Christian Andersen's famous "The Little Mermaid," Kvapil's reinterpretation adds an array of nuanced poetic techniques, a more dramatic tempo, and dark undertones that echo the work of eminent Czech folklorist Karel Jarom穩r Erben. All of these influences work in tandem to create a poetic work that is familiar yet innovative. Transposed into the folkloric topos of a landlocked Bohemia, the mermaid is rendered here as a Slavic rusalka-a dangerous water nymph-who must choose between love and immortality. Thus, Rusalka, while certainly paying homage to the original story's Scandinavian roots, is still a distinct work of modern Czech literature. Newly translated by Patrick Corness, Kvapil's work will now find a fresh group of readers looking to get lost in one of Europe's great lyrical fairy tale traditions.
