Music theorists labelled the musical art of the 1330s and 1340s as 'new' and 'modern'. A close reading of writings on music theory and the polyphonic repertory from the first half of the fourteenth century reveals a modern musical art that arose due to specific innovations in music notation. The French ars nova employed as its theoretical fundament a new system for arranging musical time proposed by the astronomer and mathematician Jean des Murs. Challenging prevailing accounts of the ars nova, this book presents the 'new art' within the intellectual context of its time, revises the datings of Jean des Murs's writings on music theory, and presents the intersection of theory and practice for a crucial era in the history of music. Through contemporaneous accounts, Desmond explores how individuals were involved in 'changing' music in early fourteenth-century France, and the technical developments they pursued that precipitated this stylistic change.

The B-minor Mass has always represented a fascinating challenge to musical scholarship. Composed over the course of the composer's life, it is considered by many to be Johann Sebastian Bach's greatest and most complex work. The fourteen essays assembled in this volume originate from the International Symposium 'Understanding Bach's B-minor mass' in 2007 at which seventy scholars from eighteen countries gathered to debate the latest topics in the field. In revised and updated form, they form a through and systematic study of Bach's Opus Ultimum, including a wide range of discussions relating to the Mass's historical background and contexts, structure and proportion, sources and editions, and the reception of the work in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. Complete vocal score for Verdi's early work depicting the death of Attila the Hun during the collapse of the Western Roman Empire in the fifth century. The premiere was given in Venice's Teatro La Fenice on March 17, 1846 in the tense period when northern Italy grew increasingly resistant to Austrian rule. The 'drama lirico' was only moderately successful in its day. By the time of the premiere of A簿da in 1871, performances were very rare. The work has enjoyed something of a revival in the latter part of the 20th century into the present day for its showcase solo numbers for bass voice. The score offered here is a digitally restored reissue of the one printed by Ricordi around 1890 as part of a complete series of Verdi's work - who was the superstar of their catalogue by then. Singers and choruses will appreciate the very readable A4 format.

Het hoofddoel van het eerste hoofdstuk van dit werk is kennis te maken met het ontstaan en de ontwikkeling van het genre Lied in de Duitstalige landen van de periode van de romantiek. Het belangrijkste en centrale deel van het boek is een vocaal werk van de belangrijke Duitse componist Richard Strauss, vocaal-technische en vocaal-interpretatieve analyses van gekozen liederen voor sopraan. Het boek is onderverdeeld in drie hoofdstukken. Het eerste hoofdstuk is verdeeld in twee onderverdelingen en geeft een historische context van de ontwikkeling van het Duitse lied vanaf het begin tot aan de periode van de romantiek. Het tweede hoofdstuk besteedt aandacht aan het leven, aan tekenen van muzikale taal en aan de verdeling van Strauss-zangwerken. Musical Theatre Choreography
Musical theatre choreography has indisputably evolved over the years and choreographers develop methods of working and philosophical approaches that should be documented but rarely are. Textual information is limited, and what has been written is generally more practical than theoretical, and is minimal compared to those books written for choreographers of modern and contemporary dance. By pointing out the similarities and dissimilarities between concert dance genres and theatre dance, and by identifying the specialized demands of crafting artistic and script-serving theatre dance and staging, this text differentiates musical theatre choreography as a separate and bona fide art form and suggests that 1) universities recognize it as such by offering training possibilities for future musical theatre choreographers, and 2) established choreographers of musicals begin to write down their own artistic processes to help fill the choreographic toolbox for young choreographers wanting to work in this field. In 1943, a light switch was flipped with the musical Oklahoma! when Rodgers' and Hammerstein's mission to keep the book absolutely central to the making of a musical was established. After that, other musical theatre artists followed suit causing standards to change. Now, no other artistic element in a musical makes a move without first ensuring that it serves the script. By creating original material that is integral to the telling of a story, composers and lyricists came to be thought of as dramatists. Likewise, Oklahoma! choreographer Agnes de Mille seamlessly integrated her dances and staging into the action and created character and situation-specific movement that actually helped forward the plot. Because of her groundbreaking advances, choreographers are now also expected to create dances that serve the script and help to tell the playwright's story. The choreographer, like the librettist, composer, and lyricist, is now positioned as dramatist, as well.In Part 1, the choreographer as dramatist is stressed as the author uses each chapter to reflect upon ways she analyzes librettos and scores to determine the function of each song in a musical and the stories that should be told through dances and staging created for each song. Drawing from her own experiences as a musical theatre director/choreographer, she reflects upon and shares her artistic process, not in a linear way, but anecdotally, to illustrate the kind of thinking that will lead her to effectively tackle the job at hand. At the end of each chapter, assignments are suggested that may be useful to aspiring choreographers and directors of musicals. This text is a valuable resource for teachers designing a course in theatre choreography on either the undergraduate or graduate level, as well as for professional directors and choreographers who want to think more deeply about their own work. Students of choreography will be asked to reflect upon and to work with techniques that are sometimes similar to, but also often oppositional to those learned in modern dance choreography courses. Part Two offers an overview of the scope of literature and representative articles that have been published on both topics, modern dance composition and musical theatre choreography, as it concisely traces the history of modern dance choreographic pedagogy, aligning it with concurrent trends happening within the American musical theatre since the mid-19th century.

Beginnend mit einer historischen Einf羹hrung und Beschreibung der musikalischen Bez羹ge zum Wort "Tintinnabuli" und des kompositorischen Kerns der neuartigen Stilistik auf Basis eines Zitates von Arvo P瓣rt werde ich exemplarisch zur Erl瓣uterung einzelner kompositorischer Kernelemente des Tintinnabuli- Stils eine Analyse zu einem Werk der Fr羹hphase des Tintinnabuli-Stils mit dem Titel "F羹r Alina" durchf羹hren. Von besonderer Bedeutung wird dabei, neben der Analyse musiktheoretischer Dimensionen (Harmonik, Melodik, Rhythmik etc.), die Leopold Brauneiss unter dem Titel "P瓣rts einfache kleine Regeln" bereits systematisiert hat, die Poetik P瓣rts und dessen Umsetzung in der neuartigen Stilistik sein, um so die Ergebnisse der Werkanalyse eindringlicher reflektieren zu k繹nnen. Grunds瓣tzlich werden in der musiktheoretischen Rezeption des Tintinnabuli-Stils mehrerer Werkausschnitte unterschiedlicher Werke P瓣rts miteinbezogen, um musiktheoretische Elemente der Stilistik erl瓣utern zu k繹nnen. Dies l瓣sst der Argumentationsverlauf des Wissenschaftlers Hermann Conen mutma?en, der als Herausgeber und Autor des mir als Leitliteratur zu Verf羹gung stehenden Werkes "Die Musik des Tintinnabuli-Stils" aus dem Jahre 2006 unterschiedliche Werkpassage verschiedener Werke zitiert, um die Musiktheorie des Tintinnabuli-Stils greifbar machen zu k繹nnen.

Peculiar Attunements
Peculiar Attunements places the recent turn to affect into conversation with a parallel movement in European music theory of the eighteenth century. During that time the affects--or passions, as they were also called--formed a vital component of a mimetic model of the arts. Eighteenth-century critics held that artworks imitated or copied the natural world in order to produce copies of the affects in their beholders. But music caused a problem for such theories, since it wasn't apparent that musical tones could imitate anything with any dependability, beyond the rare thunderclap or birdcall. Struggling to articulate how it was that music managed to move its auditors without imitation, certain theorists developed a new affect theory crafted especially for music, postulating that music's physical materiality as sound vibrated the nerves of listeners and attuned them to the affects through sympathetic resonance. This was a theory of affective attunement that bypassed the entire structure of representation, offering a non-discursive, corporeal alternative. It is a pendant to contemporary theories of affect, and one from which they have much to learn. Inflecting our current intellectual moment through eighteenth-century music theory and aesthetics, this book offers a reassessment of affect theory's common systems and processes. It offers a new way of thinking through affect dialectically, drawing attention to patterns and problems in affect theory that we have been given to repeating. Finally, taking a cue from eighteenth-century theory, it gives renewed attention to the objects that generate affects in subjects.

Dieses Dokumentar-Genre befasst sich mit der Entstehung popkultureller Mythen jeweiliger Musikszenen sowie musikkultureller Ph瓣nomene. Zwar k繹nnen auch Misserfolge und Tiefen einer Band- oder Musikergeschichte portr瓣tiert werden, wie beispielsweise bei Metallica's Some Kind of Monster (2004); jedoch tragen auch diese festgehaltenen Phasen einer Bandgeschichte gleicherma?en einer Dekonstruktion und einer Bildung eines Legendenstatus bei. Auch die beiden Bands Spinal Tap und Fraktus haben zumindest einen Kultstatus inne. Diesen verdanken sie allerdings nicht ihrem musikalischem Schaffen, dem mit einer etwaigen Dokumentation ein Merkmal gesetzt wurde, sondern die Popularit瓣t verdanken sie der Dokumentation selbst. Dabei handelt es sich um die Mockumentaries This is Spinal Tap (1984) und Fraktus - Das letzte Kapitel der Musikgeschichte (2012), also fiktionale Dokumentarfilme. Entsprechend entstammen auch beide genannten Bands der Fiktion. Die Musikgruppen bestritten jedoch anschlie?end kommerzielle Touren und traten somit in das reale Musikgesch瓣ft und das popkulturelle Realzeitgeschehen ein. Daraus ergibt sich die Frage, inwiefern sich am Beispiel dieser beiden Bands unterschiedlicher Musikgenres eine Inszenierung des Fiktiven und die Realit瓣t einander bedingen (k繹nnen). Dabei ist interessant, ob es sich bei den Filmen um Parodien des Dokumentargenres handelt, oder um Persiflagen der Musikstile und der jeweiligen Szene und Subkultur. Wie beeinflussen sich jeweils diese real existierenden Szenen und die fiktiven Filmelemente gegen- und wechselseitig? Gerade im Bereich des Unterrichtsfaches Musik hat die Digitalisierung neue Handlungsr瓣ume er繹ffnet. Der Gebrauch von Computer zur Musikproduktion oder das Aufnehmen von Sounds und dessen Bearbeitung mit Musiksoftware stellt zwar kein Novum innerhalb des saarl瓣ndischen Lehrplans dar und wird teilweise auch von Schulb羹chern abgedeckt, jedoch schafft die fortschreitende Digitalisierung neue Handlungsm繹glichkeiten wie beispielsweise Erzeugung elektronischer Kl瓣nge mit Applikationen (Abk.: "App" Softwares f羹r Smartphones und Tablets). Making Psyence Fiction
1998 saw the release of UNKLE's Psyence Fiction, an album created by James Lavelle and DJ Shadow with guests including Radiohead's Thom Yorke and Beastie Boys Mike D. The album had been years in the making with James Lavelle becoming unsatisfied with UNKLE and their early Trip Hop sound. This led to recording sessions being abandoned, including an entire albums worth of material before Lavelle brought in DJ Shadow to create a new sound for UNKLE.This book details the life of James Lavelle as he moved from local DJ, record label owner, and musician with the release of Psyence Fiction.

Studienarbeit aus dem Jahr 2019 im Fachbereich Musik - Sonstiges, Note: 1,7, Hochschule f羹r Musik Saar Saarbr羹cken, Veranstaltung: Seminar - psychologische und soziologische Aspekte des Musiklernens, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: Nach einer Retrospektive zur schulischen Geschlechterdebatte im Kontext des Faches Musik werde ich die folgende Frage in den Fokus meiner Untersuchung stellen: Welchen Beitrag leisten Musiklehrb羹cher, um Lehrpersonen bei der Methodenumsetzung "Tanzen" eine geschlechtersensiblere Umsetzung zu erm繹glichen, um auch prophylaktisch betrachtet pubertierende Jungen zum Tanzen zu bewegen und das Risiko einer Ablehnung des Faches vonseiten der Jungen zu minimieren. In diesem Zusammenhang werde ich die Stellung des Musiklehrbuches aus der Perspektive von Lehrkr瓣ften, Schulbuchautoren und mithilfe der Studienerkenntnisse des Musikp瓣dagogen Dr. phil. Hans J羹nger untersuchen. Anschlie?end werde ich aktuelle Studienergebnisse zur gendersensiblen Umsetzung der Methode "Tanzen" darlegen, um infolgedessen an einem exemplarisch gew瓣hlten Musiklehrbuch "Spielpl瓣ne 2" (Jahrg瓣nge 7/8) aus dem Jahre 2017 den unterst羹tzenden Wert f羹r Lehrpersonen im Umgang mit der von Geschlechterdifferenzen behafteten Methode "Tanzen" ziehen zu k繹nnen. Die verwendeten Forschungsergebnisse entnehme ich Studien und fachliterarischen Werken, welche vorrangig in einem Zeitraum vor der Publizierung des Lehrbuches ver繹ffentlicht wurden. Aktuellere Lehrb羹cher als das exemplarisch gew瓣hlte aus dem Jahr 2017 waren mir nicht zug瓣nglich.

Theology of Wagner’s Ring Cycle I
Wagner's Ring is one of the greatest of all artworks of Western civilization, but what is it all about? The power and mystery of Wagner's creation was such that he himself felt he stood before his work "as though before some puzzle." A clue to the Ring's greatness lies in its multiple avenues of self-disclosure and the corresponding plethora of interpretations that over the years has granted ample scope for directors and will no doubt do so well into the distant future. One possible interpretation, which Richard Bell argues should be taken seriously, is the Ring as Christian theology. In this first of two volumes, Bell considers, among other things, how the composer's Christian interests may be detected in the "forging" of his Ring, looking at how he appropriated his sources (whether they be myths and sagas, writers, poets, or philosophers) and considering works composed around the same time, especially his Jesus of Nazareth.

Nick Crossley argues that music is a form of social interaction, interwoven in the fabric of society and in constant interplay with its other threads. Musical interactions are often also economic interactions, for example, and sometimes political interactions. They can be forms of identity work, for both individuals and collectives, contributing to the reproduction or bridging of social divisions. As such music both shapes and is shaped by the wider network of relations and interactions making up our societies at their local, national and global levels. Successive chapters of the book track and explore these interplays, in each case combining a critical consideration of existing literature with the development of an original, 'relational' approach to music sociology. The result is a grand sociological vision of music that captures not only music's context but 'the music itself'. The book extends the project begun in Crossley's earlier work on punk and post-punk 'music worlds', revisiting this concept and the network ideas that underpin it, whilst broadening its focus through a consideration of wider music forms and the meanings that music has for its participants.

Studienarbeit aus dem Jahr 2016 im Fachbereich Musik - Sonstiges, Note: 1,3, Hochschule f羹r Bildende K羹nste Braunschweig, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: Diese Arbeit soll als ein Versuch verstanden werden, sich den Eigenarten von Feldmans Kompositionen anzun瓣hern und die Wirkungsweisen, sowie den Aufbau seiner St羹cke etwas genauer zu ergr羹nden. Dabei ist es nicht das Ziel, eine tiefgehende musikwissenschaftliche Analyse zu liefern, sondern vielmehr ein grundlegendes Verst瓣ndnis seiner Werke zu erarbeiten. Seine St羹cke scheinen mystisch, unvorhersehbar, teilweise sehr d羹ster- und oft mit Worten nicht greifbar. Denn Feldman hat die zeitgen繹ssische Musik in Amerika gepr瓣gt wie kein anderer Komponist, seine eigenen ganz Ma?st瓣be gesetzt und wird immer wieder mit Worten wie "ein Meister der Langsamkeit, der Stille, der variierten Repetition" (Haubensak 2015) beschrieben. Nach einer kurzen allgemeinen Einf羹hrung in das Leben und Schaffen Feldmans, die eine knappe Biographie, eine Kontextualisierung in der Kunstrichtung des Abstrakten Expressionismus, sowie einen ?berblick 羹ber seine verschiedenen Arbeitsphasen beinhaltet, sollen drei konkrete Musikst羹cke betrachtet werden: "The Viola in my Life III", "The Viola in my Life II", sowie "Rothko Chapel". Allen drei St羹cken ist gemein, dass sie in den fr羹hen 1970er Jahren entstanden sind und damit eine neue Schaffensphase Feldmans markieren, in der er wieder zur klassischen Notationsphase und damit (im Vergleich zu fr羹heren Werken) zu eher rhytmischen Musikst羹cken neigte. Dennoch lassen sich vor allem zwischen der Werkreihe "The Viola in my Life" und der Auftragsarbeit "Rothko Chapel" einige Unterschiede hinsichtlich der L瓣nge, des Verlaufs und der Aufteilung feststellen, die ebenfalls herausgearbeitet werden sollen. Ein abschlie?endes Fazit wird schlie?lich die Ergebnisse dieser Arbeit zusammenfassen und knapp beurteilen, inwiefern die Werke der fr羹hen Siebziger Feldmans Oeuvre pr瓣gten und ver瓣nderte.
