The work of Franz Schubert in the last year of his life
The object of this book is the Sonata in A major D.959 by F. Schubert. The composer has been placed in a social, historical and artistic framework. In addition, a journey through the most important and representative works that he composed in 1828, the last year of his life, has been established. Schubert, in this last stage of maturity, manages to transcend his suffering and capture it in beauty. He respects the classical canons of the sonata form and at the same time manages to expand this concept, opening new paths for many later composers. An exploratory analysis has been carried out on the form (from an architectural point of view) and on the motivic elements of the sonata. Both aspects are treated in a way that contributes to the unity and coherence of the work. In Schubert's music, singing is always present, especially the lieder. But, in addition, it will show a clear influence of other genres that also exist in this sonata, such as string quartet, dance, other earlier works for piano and religious music.

Domestic musical arrangements of opera provide a unique window on the world of nineteenth-century amateur music-making. These arrangements flourished in especially rich variety in early nineteenth-century Vienna. This study reveals ways in which the Viennese culture of musical arrangements opened up opportunities, especially for women, for connoisseurship, education, and sociability in the home, and extended the meanings and reach of public concert life. It takes a novel stance for musicology, prioritising musical arrangements over original compositions, and female amateurs' perspectives over those of composers, and asks: what cultural, musical, and social functions did opera arrangements serve in Vienna c.1790-1830? Multivalent musical analyses explore ways Viennese arrangers tailored large-scale operatic works to the demands and values of domestic consumers. Documentary analysis, using little-studied evidence of private and semi-private music-making, investigates the agency of musical amateurs and reinstates the central importance of women's roles.

The Piano Magic Touch
LIONEL BOWMANFor over half a century, pianist Lionel Bowman brought exhilaration, inspiration, and enlightenment to an international audience. A crowded, and distinguished career, with innumerable recitals, and concerto appearances - both live and for radio and television broadcast (in, inter alia, France, Britain, Holland, Switzerland, Scandinavia, Turkey, the United States, Israel, and many countries in Africa) - was recognised by election to Fellowship of the Royal Academy of Music, and entry in the New Grove Dictionary as a Beethoven exponent of integrity. Professor Bowman's contribution in this sphere has been immense. At a time when it was not fashionable to do so, he pioneered, in South Africa, the performance of the complete cycle of Beethoven's piano concertos. It was a feat accomplished on five occasions. He did much else in South Africa - more, perhaps, than any other musician before or since - to make the keyboard works of Beethoven accessible to large numbers of people. As well, he gave first performances in that country of works as diverse as Falla's Nights in the Gardens of Spain and Prokofiev's Piano Concerto No 3.More enduringly, perhaps, initially as Senior Lecturer in piano at the University of Stellenbosch, and later as Associate Professor, he earned, as a tireless and inspiring teacher, the gratitude of students on two continents who have been the beneficiaries of his unique guidance. Professor Bowman's contribution to piano pedagogy - the product of a lifetime dedicated to the consideration and resolution of technical keyboard problems - can hardly be exaggerated. For the Love of Music
For almost 200 years, wind bands and wind band musicians were the pre-eminent form of large instrumental ensemble performance practice in Canada. From the earliest documented evidence of a "band of music" in 1770 Halifax to the post-World War II explosion of curricular school band programs across the country, bands were a genuine expression of popular musical culture. They attracted the best musicians in the villages, towns and cities they called home and ranged in ability from ensembles barely beyond the beginner stage to professional organizations, like the Anglo-Canadian Leather Company Band, that were internationally renowned.More importantly, those that performed in and led these groups also served as our first music infrastructure. They became music teachers, instrument importers, sheet music distributors and concert promoters. It was through their efforts that the foundations were laid for our present-day symphony orchestras, operatic societies, conservatories and music schools. Some of these musical pioneers were also composers. Performing Folk Songs
Performing Folk Songs is the first full-length volume to explore English folk singing from the perspective of performance studies. Using archival sources, family repertoire and recorded performances of interviewees, this book argues that archives and repertoires are produced in sensory environments and through embodied encounters. Autoethnography, sensory ethnography, life-writing and landscape writing are used to explore the affective and emotional aspects of learning songs 'by heart'. Drawing on her experience as a folk singer, Bennett contributes to discourse on English folk traditions in the 21st century and brings performance scholarship to the contemporary folk song resurgence. In analyzing the performance of English folk songs in the affective context of the archive and the landscape, the book engages with and contributes original insights to scholarship on folk music, performance studies, affect theory, cultural geography and intangible cultural heritage studies.

Scattered in archives and historical societies across the United States are hundreds of volumes of manuscript music, copied by hand by eighteenth-century amateurs. Often overlooked, amateur music making played a key role in the construction of gender, class, race, and nation in the post-revolution years of the United States. These early Americans, seeking ways to present themselves as genteel, erudite, and pious, saw copying music by hand and performing it in intimate social groups as a way to make themselvescode--/codeand their new nationcode--/codeappear culturally sophisticated. Following a select group of amateur musicians, Cultivated by Hand makes the case that amateur music making was both consequential to American culture of the eighteenth century and aligned with other forms of self-fashioning. This interdisciplinary study explores the social and material practices of amateur music making, analyzing the materiality of manuscripts, tracing the lives of individual musicians, and uncovering their musical tastes and sensibilities. Listening After Nature examines the constructions and erasures that haunt field recording practice and discourse. Analyzing archival and contemporary soundworks through a combination of post-colonial, ecological and sound studies scholarship, Mark Peter Wright recodes the Field; troubles conceptions of Nature; expands site-specificity; and unearths hidden technocultures. What exists beyond the signal? How is agency performed and negotiated between humans and nonhumans? What exactly is a field recording and what are its pedagogical potentials? These questions are operated by a methodology of listening that incorporates the spaces of audition, as well as Wright's own practice-based reflections. In doing so, Listening After Nature posits a range of novel interventions. One example is the "Noisy-Nonself," a conceptual figuration with which to comprehend the presence of reticent recordists. Beethoven's Ninth Symphony
Brings to life the day-to-day details of staging the premiere of one of the most iconic works of Western classical music. The Ninth Symphony of Ludwig van Beethoven with its final choral movement is one of the iconic works of Western classical music. And yet, the story never fully told concerns the months leading to the symphony's world premiere in Vienna on 7 May and repeat performance on 23 May 1824. In his new book, Theodore Albrecht brings to life the day-to-day details that it took to stage that premiere. It's a story of negotiating for performance halls and performers' payments, of hand-copying legible scores and individual parts for over 120 performers, of finding financiers, as well as space and time for rehearsals. Importantly, it is also a story of the relationship between Beethoven and the musicians who performed this symphonic masterpiece. In fact, as the maddening rehearsal schedule towards the symphony's premiere shows, it transpires that many passages of the Ninth have been tailored to specific orchestral players. Many modern-day musicians will recognize familiar situations in rehearsals, many scholars and students will relish unprecedented new detail. All this comes to the fore by reconstructing the story drawing on the (almost) deaf composer's Conversation Books which Beethoven had been using since 1818. In the performance story of the Ninth Symphony's premiere, Albrecht makes full use of these invaluable documents, which are now being translated for the first time into English in a series of 12 volumes published by the Boydell Press.
