Buddhist Bubblegum
Raised in the cornfields of Oskaloosa, Iowa, Arthur Russell (1951-1992) would become a visionary cellist, singer, composer, and producer in Lower Manhattan's "Downtown" arts scene during the 1970s and 80s. Russell's enigmatic music blended and transcended genres as disparate as Indian raga, Americana folk, avant-garde composition, and disco. He actively infused popular music into Manhattan's avant-garde art scene, while bringing a Buddhist-inspired experimentalism into American popular music. Today, celebrated artists--from Kanye West to Rosal穩a and Peter Broderick--as well as emerging musical generations are breathing new life into Russell's music and praising his name. Nevertheless, he has remained as mysterious as he has become accessible. Buddhist Bubblegum dives deep into the mystery of Arthur Russell and offers an unprecedented exploration into his lifelong Vajrayana Buddhist practice. Everything That's Important Having known and written songs with George for 30 years now, I can honestly say he writes from the gut and from the heart. There is nothing phony or contrived about his lyrics. They are a reflection of his experiences, his loves, his hates, his fears, and everything that is important to him and the world around him. He's not afraid to be totally honest in his words, which may not always please the buying public, but he states his beliefs and is true to them. George also writes some very good tunes. I have recorded many songs that he wrote the music and words to, and they are unquestionably as good as anyone in the business. Classical Music in a Changing World
In recent years classical music has become a test case for debates over the future of culture. As times have changed, the value traditionally placed on this music has been challenged on social rather than aesthetic grounds. Lovers of classical music have been asked how its privileged history can be reconciled with growing demands for social justice and social inclusiveness. They have been asked how the music's standing as one of the great accomplishments of the West can be reconciled with the many injustices on which those accomplishments in part depended. How can the future of classical music escape the darker shadows of its past?'Classical Music in a Changing World: Crisis and Vital Signs' addresses the crisis provoked by such questions in two complementary ways. Several of the chapters show how the classical music world is already grappling with the crisis, and finding vital signs beyond the borders of the music's traditional European strongholds: in Turkey from Ottoman times to the present, in Colombia, and in a Black American film. Other chapters identify areas that still need improvement, especially on behalf of female and LGBTQ+ musicians, and suggest how advances can be made both on concert stages and in schools. This volume, which opens with an introduction by Alberto Nones that contextualizes the book and outlines the main arguments of its chapters, contains an essay by Lawrence Kramer that examines the place of classical music in the history of consciousness-a history now changing rapidly-and concludes with a Postscript written by the two editors.The writing in this volume will be accessible to a wide audience, including scholars and students, professionals and amateurs, performers and listeners. Volume 13 deals with the interaction of music and politics, considering a broad range of genres, authors, composers, and artists in Germany since the nineteenth century. A particularly iconic image of German Reunification is that of Mstislav Rostropovich playing from J. S. Bach's cello suites in front of the Berlin Wall on November 11, 1989. Thirty years on, it is timely to reconsider the cross-fertilization of music and politics within the German-speaking context. Frequently employed as a motivational force, a propaganda tool, or even a weapon, music can imbue a sense of identity and belonging, triggering both comforting and disturbing memories. Playing a key role in the formation of Heimat and "Germanness," it serves ideological, nationalistic, and propagandistic purposes conveying political messages and swaying public opinion. A Band from The Rock
The story of a band formed by five young musically inexperienced mates from The Rock, a small NSW regional town in Australia, during the second half of the 1960s pop music revolution. The book charts the band's progression from its first non-paid gig where it played the same five songs over and over because that was extent the band's song list and chronologically moves through the next 4 years with the band ultimately being voted the best band in Wagga, NSW's largest inland city in late 1969. At the end of the year, the last remaining original members left along with the band's connection to The Rock. The bands popularity and it's rise from a small town needed to be documented for local historical recognition. The book contains photos and articles, a gig guide over the 4 years and a section on a successful 40year band reunion in 2005 which attracted nearly 1000 punters from all over Australia and the equally successful follow-up reunion 穩n 2007, both which raised funds for an aged care facility in the band's hometown. If you were a member of a band in the 1960s, or were part of the 1960s music revolution, this story will bring back memories!

The Boston Pops Orchestra was the first orchestra of its kind in the USA: founded in 1885 from the ranks of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, its remit was to offer concerts of light symphonic music. Over the years, and in particular during the fifty-year tenure of its most famous conductor, Arthur Fiedler, the Pops established itself as the premier US orchestra specialising in bridging the fields of 'art music' and 'popular music'. When the Hollywood composer John Williams was assigned the conductorship of the orchestra in 1980, he energetically advocated for the inclusion of film-music repertoire, changing Fiedler's approach significantly. This Element offers a historical survey of the pioneering agency that the Boston Pops had under Williams's tenure in the legitimisation of film music as a viable repertoire for concert programmes.
