Contemporary Indonesian Fashion
Indonesian fashion has undergone a period of rapid growth over the last three decades. This book explores how through years of social, political, and cultural upheaval, the country's fashion has moved away from "colonial fashion" and "national dress" to claim its own distinct identity as contemporary fashion in a global world. With specific reference to women's wear, Contemporary Indonesian Fashion explores the diversity and complexity of the country's sartorial offerings, which weave together local textile traditions like batik and ikat-making with contemporary narratives. The book questions concepts of "tradition" and "modernity" in the developing world, taking stock of the elite consumption of luxury brands and the large-scale manufacturing of fast fashion, and introduces us to the rise of new trends such as busana muslim (or "modest wear"), creating a portrait of a vibrant and growing national and, increasingly, international, industry. Exploring clothing in shopping malls, on the catwalk, in magazines, and online, the book examines how Indonesian fashion is made, presented, and consumed, combining research in Indonesia with analysis and personal reflection. Contemporary Indonesian Fashion ultimately questions the deeply entrenched eurocentrism of "global fashion", simultaneously interrogating current homogenizing beauty and body image discourses posited as universal, by pointing to absences, silences, and erasures as reflected by contemporary Indonesian fashion- hence the "looking glass" of the title. Aptly illustrated, the book offers a new perspective on a rapidly developing new fashion capital, Jakarta.

Curating Design
Illustrated with contemporary case studies, Curating Design provides a history of and introduction to design curatorial practice both within and outside the museum. Donna Loveday begins by tracing the history of the collecting and display of designed objects in museums and exhibitions from the 19th century 'cabinet of curiosities' to the present day design museum. After Ed-Werd Rew-Shay
This book documents my research at the MoMA Library looking at, among other things, Edward Ruscha's artist's books. Through writing, thumbnail sketches and photographs, I explain how I accidentally became obsessed with Ruscha's Twenty-six Gasoline Stations, a photobook that follows Route 66 between Oklahoma and Los Angeles. In response to Ruscha's book, I created the photo series Twenty-six Views from the 7 Train, which follows the train route between the MoMA QNS Library where I was visiting Ruscha's book and my (temporary) NYC apartment. Ruscha's book documents gas stations - markers along a lengthy and often monotonous stretch of road. Although some shots appear to be taken at speed, for the most part the stations are stops on a familiar journey; this was a road Ruscha travelled frequently between his hometown Oklahoma and his adopted home of LA. My photographs capture whatever was outside when I had a clear shot of the train window, which was infrequent, especially in peak hours. Unlike Ruscha, the landscape is unfamiliar to me, even after three return trips (plus additional trips on the same train line to visit friends in Queens). The book belongs to a substantial collection of existing Ruscha-homage books, documented particularly well in the 2013 publication Various Small Books: Referencing Various Small Books by Ed Ruscha and travelling exhibition Ed Ruscha Books & Co. For me, creating the book was a way of thinking through the parallels between how Ruscha and others were using newly inexpensive offset printing to 'democratise' their work in the 1960-70s and how artists are using print-on-demand technology today.

Deviant Design
Craig Martin addresses the transgressive or deviant aspects of design: design that straddles the divide between the licit and illicit, the legal and illegal, in a variety of ways. Martin argues that design is not necessarily for the social good, but that it is immersed in the social realm in all its contradictions and confusions. Through a series of case studies he explores a wide range of social practices that employ illicit forms of design thinking, including: early computer hacking and present-day hacker culture in which everyday objects are repurposed and deliberately misused; the cultures of reproduction, counterfeit and pirated versions of classic and luxury designs; and the use of material practices by smugglers to conceal drugs within consumer goods and luggage. Deviant Design contends that these amateur and illicit practices challenge the normative idea of the professional designer or maker. Rather than being reliant on the services of institutionalized design professionals, the adhocist practitioner displays forms of innovative design knowledge in understanding how artefacts have an inherent potential to be misused or repurposed.

The general concepts are all in the main part of the book, and the details or the more advance material or explanations are placed in the appendices, so the main part of the book keeps a lighter flow of concepts. Part of the emphasis of this book is a description of some of the physical reasons a PD car goes fast, reducing drag, and part is a comparison of PD cars to people cars. This book is good in combination with other Pinewood Derby books that more directly describe the step by step process to making a good Pinewood Derby car. This book is one of two versions. This more advanced version does go into detailed engineering analysis in the appendices only. The lighter version, 'Scout Pinewood Derby Cars and Real Cars, for Kids', is mostly the same but does not have appendices, and does not go into detailed analysis. This other lighter version is more fun and appropriate for someone who is not interested in engineering equations.

The Plenitude
Lessons from and for the creative professions of art, science, design, and engineering: how to live in and with the Plenitude, that dense, knotted ecology of human-made stuff that creates the need for more of itself. We live with a lot of stuff. The average kitchen, for example, is home to stuff galore, and every appliance, every utensil, every thing, is compound--composed of tens, hundreds, even thousands of other things. Although each piece of stuff satisfies some desire, it also creates the need for even more stuff: cereal demands a spoon; a television demands a remote. Rich Gold calls this dense, knotted ecology of human-made stuff the "Plenitude." "I have spent my life making more stuff for the Plenitude," he writes, acknowledging that the Plenitude grows not only because it creates a desire for more of itself but also because it is extraordinary and pleasurable to create. Gold illustrates these creative expressions with witty cartoons. He describes "seven patterns of innovation"--including "The Big Kahuna," "Colonization" (which is illustrated by a drawing of "The real history of baseball," beginning with "Play for free in the backyard" and ending with "Pay to play interactive baseball at home"), and "Stuff Desires to Be Better Stuff" (and its corollary, "Technology Desires to Be Product"). Finally, he meditates on the Plenitude itself and its moral contradictions. How can we in good conscience accept the pleasures of creating stuff that only creates the need for more stuff?
