The book includes photos of vintage hats, purses, gloves, costume jewelry shoes, dresses, and fur-lined, collared wool coats typically worn by the church members. Easel to Edifice
Art Nouveau masters Charles Rennie Mackintosh and Henry van de Velde shared a commonality rare among the creative figures who played central roles in that turn-of-the-century design movement. Both began their careers with a lifetime of easel art-making as their goal, but ultimately redirected their energies to the primarily functional realms of architecture and the applied arts. This professional shift is especially noteworthy given the contrasts between the Scottish Mackintosh and the Belgian van de Velde, in personality, in cultural conditioning, and in the very nature of their Art Nouveau output. One can point to other similarities between the two innovators. For one, while most at home with the painstaking precision of handcraftsmanship, both were, at the same time, drawn to the benefits of industrial manufacture, speed, high volume, and product uniformity, their shared attraction to industrial production nurtured by the respective environments in which they passed their young years. By the mid-19th Century, Mackintosh's native Glasgow had won global renown for its shipbuilding sector, enabled chiefly by technical advances made in the factories that ringed the city. Belgium, in turn, made its industrial mark on the European continent through the manufacture of high speed trains. Van de Velde, although raised in Antwerp, a mecca for handcrafted textiles, nonetheless capitalized on the advantages to his Brussels design firm offered by Belgium's industrial sophistication. For another, both masters found greater appreciation for their groundbreaking efforts on foreign soil than in their home countries. Mackintosh, in concert with Margaret Macdonald, flourished in Vienna, where the couple's Scottish Rooms, featured in the Eighth Secession Exhibition (1902), generated excitement in public, as well as critical circles. Van de Velde's continental successes were more extensive. In 1896, his interiors played a significant part in Siegfried Bing's Maison Art Nouveau, while, in the first decade of the 20th Century, he was awarded multiple commercial commissions in Berlin. The respect generated by the impressive interiors he completed in that metropolis, resulted in the Directorship of the Weimar Kunstgewerbeschule and, in 1908, an invitation to join the Deutscher Werkbund. There remains, however, one parting of the ways in the career trajectories of Mackintosh and van de Velde, a divergence linked to the emergence of women as creative forces in design. Here, the pooling of skills by Mackintosh and Macdonald in the completion of major commissions, added to the freedom given the couple by Catherine Cranston in the fitting out of her Glasgow tearooms, finds no parallel in van de Velde's professional path. The major impact of women's stylistic judgment on today's design cosmos is owed, in large part, to these Scotswomen.

5D
A unique book for fashion lovers which investigates Diesel's journey through denim, highlighting the innovations that took the denim world by storm and the aesthetic relevance of the pieces today. In forty years of activity, the Diesel brand has managed to construct a world that communicates values of rebellion, nonconformity, and individuality. This book celebrates Diesel's irreverence and innovation in the rejection of the often overly serious vernacular that surrounds denim. Diesel's denim has really been the gateway into a much wider and larger lifestyle arc, masterminded by Renzo Rosso. Denim is the fabric of Diesel, but in-between the warp and weft of those threads, what Diesel really communicates is something that goes far beyond the physical garment. In addition to shooting and recontextualizing the archives, the volume also looks at the present, on how the denim permeates and punctuates Diesel's world today, concluding with the exciting output from Diesel Red Tag as more and more collaborators (Shayne Oliver, Glenn Martens, and more to come) are added to the fold. This volume is not an academic study, nor is it a chronological retelling of Diesel's history in denim. It is a tongue-in-cheek compendium about Diesel's denim universe. New images shot by four different photographers are interspersed with archival visual material, campaigns, and editorials.

Sketching
A must have for product design students! Are designers still making drawings by hand? Isn't it more advanced to use a computer in this computer era? Some may think sketching is a disappearing skill, but if you ever enter a design studio, you will find out differently. Studios still make sketches and drawings by hand and in most cases, quite a lot of them. They are an integral part of the decision-making process, used in the early stages of design, in brainstorming sessions, in the phase of research and concept exploration, and in presentation. Drawing has proved to be, next to verbal explanation, a powerful tool for communicating not only with fellow designers, engineers or model makers but also with clients, contractors and public offices. This book can be regarded as a standard book on design sketching, useful for students in product design.
Moholy-Nagy and the New Typography
Features recently discovered, previously unpublished materials from the archives of the Kunstbibliothek in Berlin by Bauhaus professor and renowned avant-garde artist L獺szl籀 Moholy-NagyIncludes work by Moholy-Nagy, Guillaume Apollinaire, F.T. Marinetti, Theo van Doesburg, Herbert Bayer, Walter Dexel, and El LissitzkyPublished concurrently with an exhibition at the Staatliche Kunstbibliothek in BerlinThe 1920s in Germany witnessed a revolution in visual communication, typography, and graphic design that still influences us today. In 1929, Hungarian avant-garde artist and Bauhaus professor L獺szl籀 Moholy-Nagy was invited to design a room dedicated to the future of typography at the Martin-Gropius Bau in Berlin as part of a larger exhibition called New Typography ("Neue Typographie"). The exhibition was organized by the Ring of New Advertising Designers ("ring neue werbegestalter"), a group started by Kurt Schwitters in 1927 which consisted of 12 avant-garde designers and artists who explored a common vision of modernity in advertising and graphic design. In five years, the Ring put on over 20 shows in Germany, and invited guest artists to exhibit with them. Moholy-Nagy's room in the New Typography show was called "Where is Typography Headed?". He created 78 freestanding panels with work by himself, other artists, and contemporary printed matter, which addressed the current trends and future direction of typography. The panels are reproduced together in this book for the first time, along with an Abcdarium of terms and concepts by a roster of noted typography and design historians.
The Last Knight
A detailed look at the ambition and artistic legacy of Emperor Maximilian I and his passion for armor and chivalry Holy Roman Emperor Maximilian I (1459-1519) crafted a public persona and personal mythology that earned him the romantic sobriquet the "Last Knight" and that perpetuates his legend to this day. In his lifelong quest to establish himself as Europe's noblest ruler, he commissioned art, epics, and lineages, as well as exceptional armor from the most celebrated armorers in Europe. Published to coincide with the 500th anniversary of his death, this book discusses the ramifications of Maximilian's wide-ranging political aspirations and artistic legacy and is the first to concentrate on the importance of armor and concepts of chivalry in the construction of his identity. Maximilian established the prominence of the Habsburgs through advantageous alliances, expanding their dominions across Europe and into the New World. He commissioned grandiose projects, some of which rank among the most ambitious in European history. But more than this, he created a profile for the ruler--a combination of idealism and vainglory--that not only helped shape the identity of the growing German nation but also has resonances in the current political climate worldwide. This superb volume provides a rare picture of how art, armor, and the cult of personality helped shape the politics of Europe at the dawn of the Renaissance. The Beauty of Everyday Things
The Japanese philosopher and aesthete's definitive, hugely influential exposition of his philosophy of folkcrafts, setting out the hallmarks of Japanese design as we know it today: anonymity, quality, simplicity and honesty--and, of course, wabi-sabi, the beauty of imperfection A Penguin Classic Our lives are filled with objects. Everyday things used in everyday settings, they are our constant companions. As such, writes Soetsu Yanagi, they should be made with care and built to last, treated with respect and even affection. They should be natural and simple, sturdy and safe--an aesthetic fulfillment of our practical needs. They should, in short, be things of beauty. Long revered as the authority on craftsmanship and Japanese aesthetics, Yanagi devoted his life and writing to defend the value of craft. In an age of feeble and ugly machine-made things, The Beauty of Everyday Things is a call for each of us to deepen our relationship with the objects that surround us. Inspired by the work of the simple artisans Yanagi encountered on his lifelong travels through Japan and Korea, this now-classic book is a heartfelt defence of modest, honest, handcrafted objects, from traditional teacups to jars to paper--objects that exemplify the beauty of everyday things.
Art Deco

This book offers a magnificently illustrated panorama of this ornamental aesthetic, which blend into the world's artistic landscape with materials as luxurious as lacquer, ivory or stingray.

Adorning Fashion
Costume jewelry is commonly understood to mean fashionable yet affordable adornments made from non-precious material. Originating in in mid-1700s France with the rise of the bourgeoise, the earliest 'costume jewelry' mimicked fine jewelry styles. Since then, costume jewelry has always been evolving. From Victorian sentimentalism to the mass-produced ornaments available today, costume jewelry has developed into an artform in its own right. An encyclopedic study of its history is long overdue. Flush with expert information, identification tips and historical anecdotes, Adorning Fashion explores the development of costume jewelry across the past four centuries. The styles of each era - Victorian, Edwardian, Arts & Crafts, Jugenstil, Art Nouveau, and each decade of the twentieth century - are given individual attention. Production methods are also explained in depth. Alloys and gilded electroplating can mimic silver and gold, while the refraction index of treated glass can, to the untrained eye, be mistaken for diamond. Adorning Fashion discusses the contributions of a remarkable roster of designers and innovators, including Kokichi Mikimoto, Arthur L. Liberty, Carlo Giuliano, Ren矇 Lalique, Elizabeth Bont矇, the Castellani brothers, Jean Fouquet, Jean Despr矇s, Fulco di Verdura, Jean Schlumberger, Salvador Dal穩, Miriam Haskell, Lina Baretti, Countess Cissy Zoltowska, Line Vautrin, Kenneth Jay Lane, Francisco Rebajes, Diane Love, Christian Dior, Balenciaga, Chanel, Van Cleef & Arpels, Paco Rabanne, Yves Saint Laurent, Napier, Haskell, Trifari, Brania, Bulgari, Versace and more.
Mina Perhonen: Ripples
The first large format book on the house of Mina Perhonen, one of the most profoundly Japanese of the women's lines to come out of the Tokyo in the last three decades. A unique blend of Scandinavian sensibility and Japanese, Mina Perhonen is characterized by a tenacious individuality that often contradicts the prevailing trends in Japanese high fashion with its emphasis on unmistakably feminine silhouettes and bright, minimalistic prints that have as much in common with the work of Alvar Aalto and Marimekko as they do with traditional Japanese design. This thoughtfully designed volume gathers the most iconic work outputted by the fashion house in the last twenty years, highlighting the rich and witty world of Mina Perhonen. A combination of new and archival photography as well as a collection of the illustrations showcase Minagawa's subtle approach to design while critical essays by Issey Miyake and Susan Brown offer insightful commentary about Minagawa's work.
A New Program for Graphic Design
A toolkit for visual literacy in the 21st centuryA New Program for Graphic Design is the first communication-design textbook expressly of and for the 21st century. Three courses--Typography, Gestalt and Interface--provide the foundation of this book. Through a series of in-depth historical case studies (from Benjamin Franklin to the Macintosh computer) and assignments that progressively build in complexity, A New Program for Graphic Design serves as a practical guide both for designers and for undergraduate students coming from a range of other disciplines. Synthesizing the pragmatic with the experimental, and drawing on the work of Max Bill, Beatrice Warde, Muriel Cooper and Stewart Brand (among many others), it builds upon mid- to late-20th-century pedagogical models to convey contemporary design principles in an understandable form for students of all levels--treating graphic design as a liberal art that informs the dissemination of knowledge across all disciplines. For those seeking to understand and shape our increasingly networked world of information, this guide to visual literacy is an indispensable tool. David Reinfurt (born 1971), a graphic designer, writer and educator, reestablished the Typography Studio at Princeton University and introduced the study of graphic design. Previously, he held positions at Columbia University Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation, Rhode Island School of Design and Yale University School of Art. As a cofounder of O-R-G inc. (2000), Dexter Sinister (2006) and the Serving Library (2012), Reinfurt has been involved in several studios that have reimagined graphic design, publishing and archiving in the 21st century. He was the lead designer for the New York City MTA Metrocard vending machine interface, still in use today. His work is included in the collections of the Walker Art Center, Whitney Museum of American Art, Cooper Hewitt National Design Museum and the Museum of Modern Art. He is the co-author of Muriel Cooper (MIT Press, 2017), a book about the pioneering designer.

Going Real
In the age of post-capitalism, what is the value of design? Is value defined by economic potential? Or is it something far less tangible? Now more than ever design has the ability to engage us in economic, political and cultural debate, to actively resist the monotony of daily life, and to counteract the precarious situation on which modern society seems to rest. Positioning itself as a lens through which to view the world, design allows us, and in some cases, even forces us to reflect on the many aspects of the societies in which we live. Divided into three chapters, GOING REAL positions itself in relation to the works of Marc Jongen, Maurizio Lazzarato, Adam Greenfield and Tiziana Terranova, among others. However, unlike the abovementioned authors, this book draws on the works of selected designers and artists to reflect on the economic, political and cultural aspects of our post-capitalist societies. Beginning with an in-depth case study of Detroit during the downfall of the industrial era, this volume moves on to a timely and provocative insight into the human crises surrounding current migration trends with a particular focus on Calais. Finally, in the third chapter, the human body itself is laid bare as the authors analyse how and why the most personal of 'spaces' became not only the ultimate marketplace for businesses but also an object of control for governments.

Many of these works used multiple stencils and colors to create one-off finished pieces that you're likely to find only within the pages of this book. Includes essays by: Steven Heller, Matt Borruso, Barry McGee and Howard A. Rodman.

Schmuckismus
Karen Pontoppidan (b. 1968), Curator and Professor of Jewellery and Devices at the Munich Academy of Fine Arts, invites 30 international artists to the annual jewelry exhibition at Die Neue Sammlung - The Design Museum to present contemporary positions in studio jewelry. The publication SCHMUCKISMUS reveals that artists of this medium of expression no longer start from the mere decoration of individuals. Instead jewelry becomes a platform for discourse on cultural norms and values. Reflecting less on themselves as individuals, this new generation of artists is concentrating more on issues affecting society as a whole, such as ecology, consumer society or feminism. This book accompanies the exhibition at Die Neue Sammlung - The Design Museum, Munich (DE), 16 March - 16 June 2019 ARTISTS: T. Alm (SE), Y. Aydin (TR/SE), D. Bernadisiute (LT/SE), B. Cotton and Thrift
Printed cotton sacks are currently fashionable aspects for material culture research, particularly in the costume and quilt history communities. Beginning in the late nineteenth century through the 1960s, these mass-produced sacks were relied upon by rural America as a valuable source of free fabric for clothing, quilts, and home d矇cor. White cotton sacks were ubiquitous beginning in the last half of the nineteenth century; sacks printed with designs would come onto the market in 1937. Large households and farms required significant quantities of flour, sugar, and other staples, as well as animal feed, particularly chicken feed, all of which began to be packaged in cotton sacks at the beginning of the twentieth century. Companies such as the Imperial Sugar Company of Sugarland, Texas, and the Robert Nicholson Seed Company of Dallas, Texas, switched from jute and burlap bags to cotton in order to help ease the cotton slump that hit farmers throughout the South in the early 1920s. As the use of cotton sacks increased, whether the sacks were used to package human consumables or animal feed, these fabrics became colloquially known as "feed sacks." In 2015, more than 5600 printed cotton sack pieces came into the holdings of the Museum of Texas Tech University in the Pat L. Nickols Cotton Sack Research Collection. The Nickols Collection includes white sacks, printed partial and whole cotton sacks, swatches of printed sacks, instructional booklets, garments, quilts, quilt tops, and decorated white sacks. Combined with earlier and subsequent individual donations, the almost 6000 feed sack pieces held by the Museum of TTU make this the largest collection of feed sack materials to be assembled by an American museum, and likely the largest such collection in public hands. The Nickols Collection was brought to the museum in support of research, thus this publication serves to both showcase the breadth of the Pat L. Nickols Printed Cotton Sack Research Collection and also serve as a comprehensive visual archive for these important artifacts of rural American material culture.
ThinkingJewellery
Alongside artistically experimental aspects of education, the ThinkingJewellery 'trademark' stands as a contextual leitmotif throughout the gemstones and jewelry study programme at Trier University/Idar-Oberstein campus. The aims of ThinkingJewellery comprise scientifically oriented research as well as discourse on the historical and societal interconnection of jewelry. Highlights are the ThinkingJewellery symposia, which are now accompanied by a series of periodicals. The new series discusses contributions to a contemporary theory of jewelry beyond disciplinary boundaries or typical categories. The texts envisioned for ThinkingJewellery 2 include 'On the Cultural History of the Gemstone', 'Goethe on Colour' and 'Cold Shine - Empty Glamour, on Jeff Koons's Celebration Series', which are based on lectures from the 2017 symposium.
