Uday Shankar and His Transcultural Experimentations
This monograph presents a specific experience of modernity within the context of Indian dance by looking at the transcultural journey of Indian dancer / choreographer Uday Shankar (1900b - 1977d). His popularity in Europe and America as an Oriental male dancer in the first half of the 20th century, and his worldwide recognition as the Ambassador of Indian culture, are brought into a historiographical perspective within the cultural and social reforms of early twentieth century India. By exploring his artistic journey beyond India in the period between the two world wars, and his experience of dance making, presentational technique and representation of India through various phases of his life, a path is forged to understanding the emergence of modernity in Indian dance.
Distractions En Route
The gripping tales in Alonso's "Distractions" reflect an attention to detail which ushers each through a graceful and credible telling. Relationships blossom and crumble, except in rare instances of mutual acknowledgement and respect. There are characters well worth our empathy, and surely those that rate sympathy, while others perfectly merit our undiluted loathing. What's important is they all grab our interest, even the dour old aunt who, in one tale, poses for a memorable portrait: "Listening to her is like opening a closet full of dead people's shoes." Nina Rubinstein Alonso is a poet and lifelong devotee and practitioner of ballet, the art and discipline of which are implicit in these intimate excursions on the highways and byways of memory. - Tomas O'Leary
Dance - A Spiritual Affair
A place where body and soul meet.In Dance: A Spiritual Affair, Donna Goddard shares her journey as an adult student of dance-a path far more than physical movement. With grace and insight, she explores dance as a spiritual practice: one that grounds the body, quiets the mind, and opens the heart to freedom and connection.Dance invites us into presence. It is where we meet ourselves honestly, meet others soulfully, and meet the Divine in the space between steps. For anyone who feels the call to move-to trust the body, to live in the moment, to be unapologetically themselves-this book is a companion, a gift, and a reminder: You were meant to dance. The dance-and the Divine-are waiting for you.
The Movements
The Movements are a moving meditation which brings the body, emotions, mind, and spirit into total Harmony. It works instantly. The effects are similar to Tai Chi and Yoga and . . . something more. It transcends them. The Movements harmonize the electrical field and dissolve anomalies in your being. They are related to tribal dances and rituals and ancient temple ceremonies.

Tango and the Dancing Body in Istanbul
Tango and the Dancing Body in Istanbul explores the expansion of social Argentine tango dancing among Muslim actors in Turkey, pioneered in Istanbul despite the conservative rule of the Justice and Development Party (JDP) and Tayyip Erdoğan.In this book, Melin Levent Yuna questions why a dance that appears to publicly represent an erotic relationship finds space to expand and increase dramatically in the number of contemporary Turkish Muslim tango dancers, particularly during a conservative rule. Even during the 2020 Covid-19 pandemic, tango dance classes, gatherings, and messages flourished on YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, and Zoom. Urban Turkey and its tango dance performances provide one symbol and example of how neoliberal capitalism could go hand in hand with conservatism by becoming a bridge between Europe and the Middle East. This study largely focuses on the dancers' perspective while presenting the policies of Erdoğan. It presents the social characteristics of the tango dancers, the meanings they attach to their bodies and their dance as well as what this dance reflects about them - besides the policies of the Justice and Development Party. The book approaches the tango dance and its dancing body in terms of layers of meaning systems in a neoliberal and conservative context. This study will be of great interest to students and scholars in dance, anthropology, cultural studies, and performance studies.
From Small Steps to Big Leaps
This inspirational autobiography opens a window on the uniquely individual life of Vadim Muntagirov, one of the most celebrated dancers of our time.Vadim left home aged 10 to enter full time ballet training, arrived at The Royal Ballet School via the Prix de Lausanne aged 16 with no English, was cast as Albrecht in English National Ballet's Giselle aged 19 and danced Siegfried in Swan Lake at The Royal Albert Hall to considerable acclaim less than a year after graduating. Since then, with an expanded repertoire as a Principal with The Royal Ballet and in parallel demand as an international guest, Vadim's early promise has translated into a stellar career. Nicknamed Vadream, he is hugely admired and very much loved by audiences at home and abroad.Vadim's story affords a real insight into the intense work and level of commitment needed to rise to the top in ballet - and stay there. It enables readers to see the experiences which have shaped him, including the lasting effect of separation from his family, his rigorous early training, his discovery of a world beyond his homeland, and the unstinting support he has received in his adopted country as a student and during his years in the profession. This is a book which looks 'behind the scenes' and 'beyond the interviews' to reveal what is involved in becoming and being a Principal dancer, including the privilege of working with many ballet luminaries, the more informal moments, and the many etceteras which come with the job.But Vadim makes it about so much more than the daily 'ins and outs' as he shares his reactions, thoughts and emotions in a way which allows others to get to know him as a person.
Skin Colored Pointes
Predominantly white casting in ballet has led many to wonder, "Where are all the black swans?" This book sheds light on female dancers of color, including thirteen primary accounts from African American, Latina, and Asian women in ballet. Topics covered include dance training, casting (and color-casting), employment, discrimination, implicit bias, success, and achievement. Dancers discuss in detail the obstacles many dancers of color face during training; considerations facing some women of color when seeking employment; performance challenges related to company work; and the teachers, parents, and community members that paved a way and widened spaces for them. Through the stories and experiences of the women featured here, models of inclusive practices and allyship are shared. The book culminates with a section providing teaching tools to support inclusive learning spaces.
Ethical Agility in Dance
This edited collection examines the potential of dance training for developing socially engaged individuals capable of forging ethical human relations for an ever-changing world and in turn frames dance as a fundamental part of human experience. This volume draws together a range of critical voices to reflect the inclusive potential of dance. The contributions offer perspectives on contemporary dance training in Britain from dance educators, scholars, practitioners and artists. Through examining the politics, values and ethics of learning dance today, this book argues for the need of a re-assessment of the evolving practices in dance training and techniques. Key questions address how the concept of 'technique' and associated systems of training in dance could be redefined to enable the collaboration of skills and application of ideas necessary to twenty-first-century dance. The editors present these ideas in different modes of writing. This collection of essays, conversations and manifestos offers a way to explore, debate and grasp the shifting values of contemporary dance. Examining these values in the applied field of dance reveals a complex and contrasting range of ideas, encompassing broad themes including the relationships between individuality and collectivity, rigour and creativity, and virtuosity and inclusivity. This volume points to ethical techniques as providing a way of navigating these contrasting values in dance. It serves as an invaluable resource for academics as well as practitioners and students.

Functional Awareness
Dancers train for long hours to condition the body to perform stunning acts of artistry through movement expression. Daily tasks outside of dance training can unwittingly compromise the diligent efforts during classwork and rehearsals. The book goes beyond descriptions of the musculoskeletal system to improve performance. The reflective practice of Functional Awareness(R) teaches strategies to change daily habits in living and demonstrates how these small simple shifts can have a profound effect on ease in action. This new second edition introduces the reader to the reflective practice of Functional Awareness(R). It uses foundational information of anatomy and motor learning to guide the reader toward a deeper understanding of their personal body structure. The movement explorations and anatomical visualizations to improve dance skills and provide lifelong tools for body wellness. Each chapter provides essentials in functional anatomy with over 60 beautiful illustrations to buoy the reader through the content. An application to improve specific dance movements using mental training through anatomical visualizations along with tactile body mapping. Finally, each chapter contains a mindful practice to integrate the practices into daily life in order to release unnecessary tension, improve posture, and better support the body outside of dance class and rehearsals.
Improvised Dance
This book elucidates the technical aspects of improvised dance performance and reframes the notion of labour in the practice from one that is either based on compositionally formal logic or a mysterious impulse, to one that addresses the (in)corporeal dimensions of practice. Mobilising the languages and conceptual frameworks of theories of affect, embodied cognition, somatics, and dance, this book illustrates the work of specialist improvisers who occupy divergent positions within the complex field of improvised dance. It offers an alternative narrative of the history and current practice of Western improvised dance centred on the epistemology of its (in)corporeal knowledges, which are elusive yet vital to the refinement of expertise. Written for both a disciplinary-specific and interdisciplinary audience, this book will interest dance scholars, students, and practising artists.

Paris Blues
Paris Blues was written by Harold Flender and originally published in 1957.The book tells the story of Eddie Cook, an African American jazz musician living and working in Paris in the 1950s. The author draws on the historical reality that throughout much of the 20th century, many African American artists, writers, and musicians emigrated to Paris, where they found the personal and creative freedom denied them back home.In addition, jazz musicians discovered that their artistry was more highly valued and appreciated in Europe than in the United States. Miles Davis said that his time living and working in Paris was life-altering. "It changed the way I looked at things forever. Paris was where I noticed that not all white people were prejudiced."Paris Blues recreates this vibrant world of smoky clubs, outdoor cafes, and a creative community where the "mixing" of everyone is the norm. Saxophonist Eddie falls for an African American school teacher, Connie, who is touring Europe with a group of educators. Eddie is torn between going back to the racist United States with Connie or forgoing their love and staying in Paris where he feels respected as a man and musician.Paris, hot jazz, and a small combination is muffled by the larger issue of racial bitterness, particularly in the case of Eddie Cook, Negro sax player who has found the color line subdued by his years of chosen expatriation. Eddie begins to question his life, himself, and his aggressive anti-Americanism when he meets Connie, a schoolteacher, on a ten weeks tour.
Tone and Speech Eurythmy
This fascinating first-hand account from a celebrated eurythmist reveals the challenges faced by the early eurythmy students. Available for the first time in English. When Marie and Rudolf Steiner developed the art of eurythmy in the early twentieth century, their aim was to awaken the musical element within the human form, in a spiritual way. In this unique form of movement, both music and the spoken word are made visible through dance and gestures. Drawing on her first-hand experience of learning from Marie and Rudolf Steiner, Elena Zuccoli describes the development of eurythmy and gives a personal account of the challenges that faced the early students as they sought to master this new discipline.
Dance History(s)
A multivoiced dance history book, authored by twelve diverse choreographersIn an effort to deepen our understanding of what dance is and how it has functioned throughout human history, this prismatic book project is dedicated to an artist-centric perception of dance history. This book interrogates the history of dance from the subjective, poetic perspective of a choreographer. Diverse dance artists from the American dance field contribute prismatic, disruptive perspectives on how dance has unfolded over time and what dance history is. They reimagine the question: What is dance history? Twelve illustrated booklets, each written by a working choreographer, address the subject of dance history from nonacademic, subjective, poetic perspectives. The books model a way of enlarging and complicating how we view dance history by giving the authorial microphone to artists, to learn how their embodied perceptions relate to or diverge from the dominant dance canon. With contributions by mayfield brooks, Thomas F. DeFrantz, Maura Nguyen Donohue, Keith Hennessy, Bebe Miller, Okwui Okpokwasili, Eiko Otake, Annie-B Parson, Javier Stell-Fresquez, Ogemdi Ude, Mariana Valencia, and Andros Zins-Browne. Dancing Deeper Still
You went to your first Contact Improvisation (C.I.) class, or a friend invited you to the weekly jam, and you're captivated. Or perhaps, you've been dancing and investigating for years. What's next? What discoveries await you in your dance? In 1972, Steve Paxton convened a group of athletes and dancers to research the principles of Contact Improvisation. Since then the form has matured into a worldwide, collaborative experiment with no central control. Everyone who enters adds their findings and permutations to this inherently unfinished dance form. Dancing Deeper Still is a sourcebook of essays on Contact Improvisation, a philosophical treatise, and a handbook. This compilation of 30 years of writings is meant to accompany and support your investigation as you discover new pathways and dynamics in your dancing. It includes chapters on: Contact Improvisation in performance Boundaries and sexuality Political activism Dancing while aging Expanded teaching research notes Advanced skills Whether you are the improviser who savors the slow rivers of sensation...or who delights in spontaneous acrobatics...or any of the bountiful realms in between, this book was written for you. Your discoveries enrich the community-held body of knowledge in our ever-evolving form. I invite you to dance deeper still.
Beyonc矇 and Beyond
This book examines three years of Beyonc矇's career as a pop mega star using critical race, feminist and performance studies methodologies. The book explores how the careful choreography of Beyonc矇's image, voice and public persona, coupled with her intelligent use of audio and visual mediums, makes her one of the most influential entertainers of the 21st century. Keleta-Mae proposes that 2013 to 2016 was a pivotal period in Beyonc矇's career and looks at three artistic projects that she created during that time: her self-titled debut visual album Beyonc矇, her video and live performance of "Formation," and her second visual album Lemonade. By examining the progression of Beyonc矇's career during this period, and the impact it had culturally and socially, the author demonstrates how Beyonc矇 brought 21st century feminism into the mainstream through layered explorations of female blackness. Ideal for scholars and students of performance in the social and political spheres, and of course fans of Beyonc矇 herself, this book examines the mega superstar's transition into a creator of art that engages with Black culture and Black life with increased thoughtfulness.

Welcome to the exhibition catalogue. Please allow me to introduce my dance partner Stephanie Sturges and myself, the artist, dancer and writer, Anthony D Padgett. This exhibition is of some of the cross-overs between art and dance in my paintings, photography, sculpture, film and dance. Many of the dances I created I have put on youtube and QR codes are in the book for you to scan. This technology will likely be outdated and you can search by titles for the films as well. Most of the images are of works in the exhibition but also images of some of the works that weren't included but form a part of the broader body of work.
When Words Are Inadequate
When Words are Inadequate is a transnational history of modern dance written from and beyond the perspective of China. Author Nan Ma extends the horizon of China studies by rewriting the cultural history of modern China from a bodily movement-based perspective through the lens of dance modernism. The book examines the careers and choreographies of four Chinese modern dance pioneers-Yu Rongling, Wu Xiaobang, Dai Ailian, and Guo Mingda-and their connections to canonical Western counterparts, including Isadora Duncan, Mary Wigman, Rudolf von Laban, and Alwin Nikolais. Tracing these Chinese pioneers' varied experiences in Paris, Tokyo, Trinidad, London, New York, and China's metropolises and borderlands, the book shows how their contributions adapted and reimagined the legacies of early Euro-American modern dance. In doing so, When Words are Inadequate reinserts China into the multi-centered, transnational network of artistic exchange that fostered the global rise of modern dance, further complicating the binary conceptions of center and periphery and East and West. By exploring the relationships between performance and representation, choreography and politics, and nation-building and global modernism, it situates modern dance within an intermedial circuit of literary and artistic forms, demonstrating how modern dance provided a kinesthetic alternative and complement to other sibling arts in participating in China's successive revolutions, reforms, wars, and political movements.

Dynamo, Michael Somes A Life in The Royal Ballet
Michael Somes is the unsung hero of The Royal Ballet - the dynamo driving performances as dancer and partner to Margot Fonteyn and as overseer of performances in the company's greatest years. From humble beginnings, he challenged the prevailing prejudice against male dancers to become a star and a maker of stars, serving The Royal Ballet longer and contributing more to its development than anyone except its founder, Ninette de Valois. The Royal Ballet was his life. Somes was born in 1917when ballet belonged to the exotic foreigner and even a British ballerina seemed impossible let alone an Englishman becoming a ballet dancer. In 1934, three years after the establishment of the Vic-Wells (now Royal) Ballet he was the first scholarship boy at their school. Only three years later ballets were being created for him, but four years of wartime service, culminating in serious injury, threatened to put an end to his career. In 1946 he was integral to the company's move to Covent Garden, acclaimed tours in war-scarred Europe, a sensational New York debut in 1949 and triumphant coast-to-coast tours of North America. His masterly partnering skills underlay Fonteyn's transformation into an international star. They were the great ballet partnership, glamour incarnate, feted throughout the world: in Australia and South Africa people curtseyed to them like royalty: they were cultural ambassadors in Eastern Europe at the height of the Cold War and the first British dancers to appear in Japan. They danced before crowned heads and heads of state and the elite of Hollywood and Broadway. Under Somes' stern editorial eye, Ashton created masterpieces for them. As The Royal Ballet's Assistant Director in the 1960s, during the company's golden years, Somes nurtured a wealth of talent at all levels, notably Antoinette Sibley (who became his second wife) and Anthony Dowell, and developed a corps de ballet of unsurpassed perfection. He described himself as a "'sponge' & 'telephone wire'" through which to pass the treasury of knowledge he learnt from the legendary names of 20th century ballet, and saw passing on that knowledge as a duty and a privilege. Now the legend of Somes the ruthless upholder of standards, of iron discipline and unpredictable rages was born, but seldom acknowledged is his endless patience, kindness, generosity and deep concern for every member of the company. Somes was The Royal Ballet's soul and moral centre. Woven through his life were the legends of 20th century ballet - Karsavina, Massine, Markova, Dolin, Balanchine, de Valois, Ashton, Fonteyn, MacMillan, Nureyev - musicians like Constant Lambert and Adrian Boult, artists like John Piper and Edward Burra. Drawing on Somes' hitherto unseen letters and diaries augmented by interviews with contemporaries and those he mentored, Dynamo is a first-hand account of both successes and failures, the day to day struggles, the grumbles and disagreements as British ballet grew from a few dancers in a fringe theatre in then unfashionable Islington to a company that challenged the supremacy of ballet in Russia and France.

Black Tap Dance and Its Women Pioneers
While tap dancers Fred Astaire, Gene Kelly, and Eleanor Powell were major Hollywood stars, and the rhythms of Black male performers such as the Nicholas Brothers and Bill "Bojangles" Robinson were appreciated in their time, Black female tap dancers seldom achieved similar recognition. Who were these women? The author sought them out, interviewed them, and documented their stories for this book. Here are the personal stories of many Black women tap dancers who were hailed by their male counterparts, performed on the most prominent American stages, and were pioneers in the field of Black tap.
